I’ve been thinking about cutie marks recently and I think it’s really weird how ponies view them when things like bad luck are an option for someone’s destiny. Couldn’t a destiny like that be considered a disability? Couldn’t Starlight Glimmers spell be altered to have positive medical effects in cases like Trouble Shoes? I just think Trouble Shoes shouldn’t have to live with bad luck for the rest of his life because destiny/fate dictate it and a mark on his butt say so. A pony with a cutie mark and destiny that might as well be a curse to them shouldn’t have to live with that.

There’s a cutie mark disease for crying out loud. Cutie pox is getting too many cutie marks. I think cutie marks are an important magical phenomenon that happens to ponies and it can have good or bad effects. And has magical illnesses and mutations surrounding it. Sometimes a pony can get something like bad luck as a “destiny” or get to many cutie marks, and maybe not get any at all.

Ponies view cutie marks as such an important part of being a pony that not having might as well be not being a pony. Don’t worry you’ll get one eventually! Or suck it up, it is your destiny chosen for you! I think Starlight Glimmer discovering the ability to remove cutie marks, and thus the magical powers it gives, probably changes many ponies views a lot. “I don’t have to live like this? There’s an experimental treatment?” And many probably look down on this. It causes magical fatigue. Your magic skills lower. Your ability to do anything in that field basically becomes nullified.

But if you had bad luck as a “destiny” or had multiple cutie marks where the only known cure for that was extremely rare and hard to get, wouldn’t Starlights spell be promising? Magical fatigue and some skills lost seems preferable.

And my biggest thing with this, is that Trouble Shoes got arrested for having bad luck if I’m remembering correctly. His destiny got him put in jail. And the solution is for him to become a rodeo clown? I just think it’s insulting to him. You’ve been getting arrested for property destruction and vandalism because of your destiny? Go to the circus! Become a clown! Trouble shoes deserves better

I am mentally chewing on temporary antagonist!earthspark Prowl so much over here it's insane

Like. Of all the characters to have as the unexpected autobot antagonist of the episode, it's Prowl. I'm thinking so much about him having a breakdown and flipping utter shit, and the end of the episode we get the (mild) cliffhanger of one of the autobots saying they'll take care of him and that hopefully, next time the terrans see Prowl it will be under better circumstances (it will)

It would also be such an interesting parallel to the scene at the end of the Tarantulas episode. Because here we have a character who was more or less forced to be a Decepticon, and here we have a character who was more or less forced to be an autobot. Both kept a more reserved demeanor throughout the episode, only to lead to a massive explosion at the end where emotion. Both have such reputations, but we (and naturally the malto kids) end up seeing past that.

If it's not too much trouble would you mind sharing more on your thoughts about AJ? Esp the line she shouted at Rarity and her "struggle with sexual identity" I'm kind of new so I would like to hear more! Does Rarity also struggle with sexual identity and fearing AJ would leave? I love the family oriented person A and the business inclined and impressed by shiny new things person B trope

Ok, this is gonna get into head canons and personal opinions.

The writing in Rollercoaster of Friendship (and EQG as a whole) is much simpler and more stripped down in comparison to FiM (most likely to appeal to a younger audience; don't want to seem like I'm dissing the writers), but that one confrontation made me sit up in my seat because it carries the entire special.

More under the cut cuz I don't want MLP analyses clogging up my blog.

For one, we've seen AJ get frustrated and angry about the same exact conflict over a girl in FiM (Rara), establishing a pattern. And even though she's right (her friend really is being manipulated), I read both cases as her acting out in jealousy too. Here's this girl who she's felt a unique attachment to being "taken away" and changed by someone new. This is most apparent in RoF; the moment Vignette introduces herself, kisses Rarity on both cheeks, and establishes herself as Rarity's "new best friend," AJ immediately reacts with shock, betrayal, and boldfaced jealousy (made even worse when Rarity forgets her during introductions). Although AJ acts independent, she's actually very emotionally dependent on certain people in her life.

If we come into this with the assumption that AJ has romantic feelings for Rarity –– which is a normal assumption given the director/writer confirmed the special was written as a romantic drama between the two –– AJ's line is all the more heartbreaking. If I may slip into fictional speculation: your crush is no longer listening or paying attention to you, even though you know something is wrong and that she's getting hurt. Your frustration at her lack of awareness is really your anger at her lack of care –– she doesn't care about you anymore. So in a fit of rage, in your big, dramatic confrontation, just to make her look at you, react at you, feel how she's been making you feel all day –– unwanted and unspecial –– you hurt her back. AJ yells, "You're not special!" and Rarity cries.

And what really gets me is that AJ lies. In this moment, she lies that Rarity's not special when (again, assumption of romance) she's the most special person in the world to her. So special that she's placed all her feelings of self-assurance and security on their relationship. So special that the moment their relationship is shaken and she doesn't know to recover it –– recover herself –– she lashes out, acts against her character, and says something dishonest just to hurt the girl she loves.

(Honestly, rewatching this special, AJ is so insecure and attention-needy. The way she pouts and slouches and lags behind the group and says, "Never mind. It's nothing," when asked what's wrong is textbook "please pay attention to me and ask me what's wrong because i need a reason to be honest about feelings i know i should be ashamed of" behavior.)

I think AJ's insecurities (which could be tied to her lack of experience with romantic relationships) reveal how she has a tendency to misattribute and redirect anger onto the person she cares most about (see Simple Ways as well, where she's caught on the opposite end of a jealousy spat). This could easily become a very toxic trait, but AJ grows past it. Near the end of RoF, the two come together and apologize. AJ recognizes her entitlement and confesses her insecurities about their relationship. She felt hurt and attacked when her status as Rarity's best friend/girlfriend was threatened because it's a role she uses to self-identify –– if Rarity isn't hers, she loses part of her identity. And she admits that she thought her motivation was to protect Rarity, but really she was just being selfish and protecting herself. Rarity was busy and stressed and needed someone to lean on just as much AJ needed her. She isn't AJ's emotional support girlfriend, and it wasn't right to expect her to be one.

(Which is why Rarijack is peak because throughout both series, they repeatedly show just how important honesty, open communication, and trust is in maintaining, supporting, and growing a romantic relationship.)

I know this is an extremely nuclear and potentially hostile take to have, but this is my genuine feeling right now after a recent Twitter scrap I had.

Ranked matchmaking was a fucking mistake. (Not skill-based matchmaking, specifically open-visibility competitive rank systems)

You're crying and shitting your pants because you lost LP / ELO / RP / MLP(FIM) because someone on the enemy team was hacking? Boo fucking hoo. Go read a book, bitch.

There is no benefit to ranked systems for video games. I'm of the doctrine that video games are supposed to be fun, not a job or a chore, so I recognize I have some bias in this. Even then, it's so easy to pick apart any perceived benefit to ranking systems by just revealing how they sound good on paper, but just make things worse in practice. Nigh-unmanageable slot machines manipulated only by stacking up and making things miserable for other players, that encourage you to attach your life worth and/or personality to a virtually meaningless number or icon. Ohhh, you've got a shiny gold coin thingy on your profile? Have you ever shook hands with the people you beat to get that pointless, gaudy status symbol? Of course not, they were all numbers to you.

And again, don't get me wrong. I was fucking there. I was climbing my way tooth and nail into Gold back in my CS:GO days just shy of six years ago. Hell, even three years ago I was ranking up in Apex because I forgot how utterly stupid the grind is. This isn't just speculation from some liberal SJW games journalist with a skill issue, this is personal experience that I can call on to compare and contrast to how spoiled little Valorant babies act. People who put personal stock and self-worth into badly managed slot machines are always going to be inherently garbage people.

MLP worldbuilding thoughts

ok so i was going to jump right into the MLP part of this but then i realized i have no idea how well known the weird little dinosaur i’m referencing from is. so.

Yi qi is a gliding dinosaur with such strange wings its name literally means “strange wing.” It’s a feathered dinosaur, but its wings are more like a bat’s, with a membrane of skin stretched between elongated fingers and, uniquely, a long, bony strut extending from the wrist.

Because Yi qi isn’t directly analogous to any modern animal, and the fossils are unclear as to the extent of the wing membranes, there are multiple hypotheses as to how exactly it flew. One hypothesis (the one that’s relevant to this post) is that the membrane extended only between the digits and the bony spur, possibly with some extra lift generated by the feathers on its arms.

Now, Yi qi was a glider, not a flyer, with primitive, undifferentiated feathers. But if you had a more developed version of that wing, one that was better adapted for flight...?

What I was getting to was, maybe Equestrian pegasi have wings structured something like that. Covered completely in feathers, but with fleshy membranes supported by semiflexible digits making up the structure of the upper parts of the wing. It would explain things like the repeated depictions of pony skeletons with multiple digits in the wings, and pegasi manipulating objects using their wings.

Since Earth ponies are able to eat rocks to some degree canonically do you think Pinkie Pie and Spike have talked about what gemstones and rocks are the best tasting? Do you think that is why Pinkie Pie knows what gemstones to put on cupcakes for Spike and maybe dragons in general? So theres some merch of what is assumed to be designs of the Gen 5 main characters floating around… I have no clue how valid those are because why on earth would they be selling merch of characters no one knows about yet? Although a friend suggested they were soft releasing the designs to see the reaction without confirming it and would change if needed but idk.

Ocellus the next Queen?

Okay i dont know how obvious it is to the fandom considering im not really involved nor really look into fandom generated stuff, but all things considered i was just rewatching an episode before it really hit me 

Ocellus is pretty different from all the other changelings

1. she has ‘hair’, which to be contrasted with pre-reform and post-reform changelings dont have anything on their head. While the only changeling we saw with real ‘hair’ had been Queen Chrysalis herself. 

2. Ocellus is the only noticeably female changeling we’ve seen, just like before with pre and post reform changelings they’re all pretty androgynous and typically can’t be told which gender they might be. fitting into the clear cut that she must be a princess of theirs due to the differences and her lining up with the traits of queen chrysalis [physically]

“Maybe we can’t really change that much” 

3. She was transformed into queen chrysalis not just a normal changeling. Which is weird if she was just a regular changeling before and not someone special to the hive. Her transformation into queen chrysalis was her worst fear, wouldn’t that be exactly what a princess would be terrified of? Becoming the ruler that was the most feared/hated and probably she feared the most as well. [If like any hive with an existing queen, they'd most likely have to fight and the victor gets to live to be queen much like bees]

So perhaps the changelings are doing what any other insect groups do when they’re missing a queen. They groom a new one to take the place.

Do you think there might be more to the premise of the upcoming My Little Pony movie than what the writers and staff intended? In other words, is it possible that the premise of said movie could also apply to real life, particularly in the MLP fandom? If so, this might be a big wake up call to all the bronies of the world.

A lot of the lessons in FiM already applied to the fandom. I’m not sure what you’re on about here, but I’d rather just see what the movie brings to the table rather than speculate about what kind of meta message it could possibly have, if any.
