MLP AU: Barbarian: Path of the Everfree Guardian

This subclass uses the 2024 rules for Barbarian

This Path embodies the untamed spirit of the Everfree Forest (or anywhere else similar to it) drawing strength from the natural world and the ancient magic that flows through it. These Barbarians are fierce protectors of the wild, guardians of balance, and conduits for the raw power of nature. The Everfree Guardian reveres the natural world and seeks to maintain its balance. They understand that true strength comes from harmony with nature. While they prefer peaceful solutions, these Barbarians are capable of unleashing the raw fury of the wild when necessary. They are a force of nature to be reckoned with. The Everfree Guardian is a staunch protector of the forest and all its creatures. They defend their domain with unwavering resolve. These Barbarians embrace their primal instincts, drawing upon the ancient magic that flows through the Everfree Forest.

Level 3 Everfree's Blessing: When you enter a Rage, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Barbarian level + your Strength modifier. These temporary hit points last until your rage ends. Additionally, you gain proficiency in Survival if you don't already have it.

Level 6 Thorn Whip: While raging, you can use your bonus action to cause grasping vines to erupt from the ground in a 20-foot radius centered on a point you can see within 60 feet of you. Each creature in that area must make a Strength saving throw against your Save DC (8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier). On a failed save, the creature is restrained until the end of your next turn. A creature can use its action to make a Strength check against your Save DC, freeing itself or another creature within its reach on a success.

Level 10 Wild Growth: When you score a critical hit against a creature while raging instead of the normal effects of a Brutal Strike, you cause vines and thorns to erupt from the ground around the target. The target takes extra Poison damage equal to your Barbarian level and must succeed on a Strength saving throw against your Save DC. On a failed save, the target is Restrained until the end of your next turn.

Level 14 Nature's Vengeance: While you are raging, whenever a creature within 30 feet of you hits an ally with an attack, you can use your reaction to force that creature to make a Wisdom saving throw against your Save DC. On a failed save, the creature is Frightened of you until the end of your next turn.

This subclass uses the 2024 rules for Barbarian

This Path embodies the strength and resilience of crystal, reflecting the enduring bonds of friendship and the power of inner beauty. These Barbarians are masters of defense and counter-attacks, turning their opponents' aggression against them. The Crystal Heart is a stalwart protector, capable of weathering any storm. They prioritize defense and the preservation of their allies. These Barbarians turn their enemies' strength against them, using their momentum and force against them. The power of the Crystal Heart comes from within, fueled by unwavering loyalty and compassion. It shines brightest in times of adversity. These Barbarians draw strength from their connections to others. They fight to protect those they care about.

Level 3 Crystalline Resilience: While raging, when a creature misses you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to force that creature to make a Strength saving throw against your Save DC (8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier). On a failed save, the creature is pushed 5 feet away from you and knocked Prone.

Level 6 Refractive Blow: When you hit a creature with a melee attack while raging, you can use your bonus action to force the creature to make a Strength saving throw against your Save DC. On a failed save, the creature has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes against you before the end of your next turn.

Level 10 Crystalline Shatter: When you score a critical hit against a creature while raging, instead of the normal effects of a Brutal Strike, you deal extra Radiant damage equal to your Barbarian level. The target must also succeed on a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failed save, the target's speed is halved until the end of its next turn.

Level 14 Diamond Heart: While Raging, when an ally within 30 feet of you is hit by an attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage the ally takes by an amount equal to your Barbarian level.

Diane and Kat: My Original Lesbians

Diane and Kat: The Bound Bands (available for free until the end of the 15th! A decision I made while writing this. XD) was my first original story. Released on August 5th, 2016, it was my first book ever released and worked on over the course of four months. Today I just feel like talking about them and what led to them.

So first... Going original wasn't my idea. It was something I was considering but it was actually someone else in the MLP Fandom that first talked to me about how they wanted to do original works. The two of us had tried to work together in the past, they liked my work and I like to attempt to collaborate. By the end of the day, I had the main concept for the two main characters already written up.

Now mind you, I say ATTEMPT to collaborate. I have literally had more success collaborating in the TOH fandom, the fruits of which no longer are publicly available, than I did in five years? of being the MLP fandom. I would always get brought on for a project, have a ton of ideas and write my portion quickly and then NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. So for about a week the two of us lightly brainstormed and then it just kind of... died. I think maybe the first chapter had been written by me, maybe part of the second, but they never contributed to the writing of it and a lot of the brainstorming was primarily my own because of how fast my brain works.

The big contribution I remember they added was a piece of advice: "Don't make it about their sexuality." It's a line that stuck with me because you can actually see how it manifests in the second chapter. The mayor who is supposed to pay them is presented as a bigot trying to stiff them. However, his prejudice isn't because they're lesbians. It's the idea that couple adventurers get 'distracted' and so potentially did shoddy work, despite them having done the job just fine. A tongue in cheek subversion that also helps make it clear the sort of world they're living in. People will still try to short change and scam you but it's not going to be by sexual preference.

However, due to the collaborative nature of it, the story went fallow for a while. I think this technically first happened late 2015 when it was first brainstormed and my brain kept buzzing about it on and off but, well, I had other things to worry about like my declining mental health. It only really came back to the forefront when in March of 2016, Walmart threatened to fire me and something in me just... broke. I ended up having to quit due to the void it introduced in me and made plans to move to Colorado to live with my parents. At the same time, as a way to potentially try and make up for the lack of a job, I asked my friend if it was okay if I took Diane and Kat and ran with them. They said yes and so their story began.

But who were they? (I actually have character profiles on a doc for them from that original drafting and there was a SEVERE temptation to just copy and paste for this)

Diane Maxwell:

A priestess turned sorceress who was almost killed by templars for having been found out to have incredibly powerful magic in her veins, she has a fairly serious, focused personality. She is mildly sarcastic, especially with Kat, and would be content in life if not for the fact that the teachings she was raised with push her to want to continue doing good. That and adventuring pays the bills. She wears a dress robe over normal leather armor and specializes in lightning and fire magics due to having an affinity to both and being shockingly bad at any form of healing magic, much to her own disappointment. Is awkward about public affection though it's purely a personal thing and has nothing to do with how deep her love for Kat runs.

Kat Wolfcry:

A self proclaimed knight who is the daughter of the chief to a barbarian clan, she is stubborn, enthusiastic and on the face of it what you would expect from a barbarian who is a bit on the shorter side, especially when compared to her tall girlfriend. Her fiery red hair and heritage hide who she really is. She cares about innocents more than any barbarian literally can for the job. She even almost failed the ritual to imbue herself with a wolf spirit because it required her to kill in cold blood a wolf she knew to become one with it. To give her the sort of magical rage a fantasy barbarian has. It was saving Diane from the templars and their lone journey to bring her back home from a failed pillaging raid that made her decide she needed to leave home and at least try to be a knight, even if she still fights like a barbarian. But uh... Just because she cares about innocents doesn't mean she's defanged. She just can't get mad 'for fun'. If you hurt people, expect her to be all too happy to show you why her clan was known for brutal slaughters of their prey, like a pack of wolves on a moose.

So there are your two bases. The classic dynamic of tank and sorcerer, though only the latter can only do field medicine so they need to be careful. Plenty of backstory potential and plenty of just general potential for good fun between the two, with their first book even mentioning old stories I had in mind for them because I was just so enthusiastic about the ideas I had for them.

So... Why only the one book?

Well, that kind of comes down to format? Amongst a lot of other things but something that has always made me nervous is that I conceptualized the series as being stand alone for the majority of the books. One might reference another book but you didn't need to have read it to get a complete story with whichever book you read. The only book that should have ever broken this would have been the final book in the series because it would have been a celebration of what had come first.

That's also why Bound Bands is the way it is. It was just meant to be a fun dungeon crawl that could be a part of a series, but didn't have to be. I literally have the layout listed on that old doc of 2 beginning chapters, four dungeon layers, three night chapters to serve as quieter breaks, then the boss and epilogue effectively. A simple but effective structure that was based on one main premise: A dungeon meant to stress and push whoever came in's bond with themselves and each other hard. I won't spoil why since you can go check it out yourself, at least if you're reading this when it comes out.

BUT this format is also kind of nerve wracking in that it means having to reintroduce a lot of elements of a character each time and avoiding repetition in that, finding new ways to introduce them and what not, is something my brain has hissed at me each time I've tried starting another book of theirs. I actually don't even know how much I have to worry about this since this style isn't actually something I ever engaged much with as a kid. I never read the old Sherlock mysteries as an example. I don't know how much they rely on you knowing who Sherlock is even if each story is standalone. I read series or single books as a kid, never something in this sort of field so it maybe is something I just need perspective on to help me out.

But just for fun, I'll share the immediate pitches for some of the books I'd considered:

Holy Town Mage Tournament: A small church town belonging to the same faith Diane used to be is holding of all things a tournament for black magic users. While normally something Diane wouldn't be a part of, two things push her to join. The first is the one favored to win, a mage who claims to be an archmage, which is no simple feat in this world. Diane should know: She qualifies as one after all due to having mastered the ability to duel cast. The other? A mute priestess who is the final opponent for the winning mage and her mother who are raising money for the town through this blasphemous act and who claim to have been friends with her father, Avatar Maxwell.

A Feral Circus: After a night of hard drinking that Diane skipped but that Kat went out to enjoy, Kat doesn't make it back to the room they were staying at. Meanwhile, the circus in town's beast master claims to have a new wolf as part of his menagerie who he shall reveal to all in one week's time. With it being the closest thing to a lead Diane has, can she infiltrate the circus and find Kat? And why is the beast master waiting so long to reveal his new prize?

(Side note: I always felt like I had an easier time to figure out stories for Diane to be the lead than Kat. *sigh*)

Test of Mettle: In the middle of a town lies a large stone rock with hundreds of nicks taken out of it by various warriors, knights and swordmasters who wanted to test their might against it. When Kat goes to do it though, she is stopped by an old samurai type who says that a barbarian has no place in testing themselves like this. When she tries anyways, she destroys her sword as if it were nothing. That's the last straw and Kat makes it clear they aren't leaving until she's not just hit the rock but shattered it entirely, with this easily being one of their earlier stories.

(Also yes, I watched the anime take on Thundercats. Why do you ask?)

And finally, of course:

Diane and Kat: On her first raid, Kat Wolfcry chooses a monastery on the edge of the lands dominated by the Kesral faith. It's an easy target but one with plenty of loot to make her father proud. She doesn't know that a squad of templars are there, having been brought in to judge Diane Maxwell, daughter of the old leader of the monastery, for her newfound black magic. They throw her in a well cell beneath the monastery as they finish getting the black powder that they'll be bringing back to the capital. Powder kegs waiting to go off and help start these two girls' destinies with a bang.

The one I've tried starting the most often is the holy town tournament one, with their true origin story of meeting and falling in love being the only other one I've actually tried to start. Feral Circus has always been LOW priority because it's the sort of story I'd want to do as like a fifth book since that one genuinely just removes Kat for the entirety of it while at least the holy town one is simply more focused on Diane. I've never forgotten them though. They always come to mind, asking for when their turn will be and I keep just not quite managing to return to them.

UNTIL NO- No. I don't have an announcement like that to make. I might try to sometime soon, and maybe publish some one offs I made for the two on Ao3, including when Diane first cast magic, but for the moment they are just the two lesbians I want to someday return to. As such, if you have questions about them and the like, please, let me know. I'd love to answer what I can and who knows? Maybe it'll help me get more motivated about them.

DND RECAP: the Beginning of the end

Cast consists of the following and is separated into two sessions

Rose: DM Alfie: Chicken looking birdfolk sorcerer warlock and is from a different universe Mark: human barbarian paladin Gorg: Goliath barbarian Patrick: changeling bard? with memory loss Luna: Elf (they fell victim to the false hydra) Quinn: wood elf Fluffy Scruffington: tabaxi Bob: Archfey NPC (Alfie made a deal with him)

So basically we're standing in front of the painting and Bob appears out of nowhere and pretty much says Hi and I'm like "SWEET MOTHER OF GOD, WHEN DID YOU GET THERE?!"

Bob just throws a smoke bomb and as the smoke clears we see him booking it to the museum exit and he trips and Gorg just busts through the door and hops straight into the painting.

I ask Hank (magical orb of memories that had some sort of say over reality) if the unicorns are the nice and pure hearted kind of the murderous blood thirsty kind and Hank says they're a bunch of cocky sons of bitches.

We all go in the painting and the first thing that we see is Spike who says "Hello welcome to Equestria-" and immediately gets golf clubbed by Gorg's hammer and is immediately killed.

And from the heavens we hear "HOME RUN!" Gorg has a new patron Wii Matt of Wii sports.

My little pony friendship is magic is a graphic novel series where Alfie is from, and Gorg has nightmares about the ponies.

We head into Ponyville and the first pony we meet is Princess Twilight Sparkle. Alfie sums up why we are here asks if there's a cemetery that we can grave rob and also asks her to sign his copies of the MLP graphic novels and leaves her with a bag of gems to pay for any damages. The Golden Oak library is still there.

Gorg sneaks off and spots Rarity. She turns screams and Gorg covers her mouth and kills her dragging the body behind the Carousel Boutique.

Fluttershy is behind the Carousel Boutique and has a panic attack, I chuck a health potion at Gorg and he shoves it down Rarity's throat. She is now extra dead. Mark turns Fluttershy to look at him telling her not to look and wraps his section staff around her snapping her neck. Meanwhile, Gorg was making a show of needing to get rarity help before breaking off her horn and both bodies are stashed away. The DM says "Mark a feeling of dread washes over you. He knows."

Alfie's making his way towards the cemetery and comes across sugar cube corner, popping into ask where the cemetery is and meeting Pinkie pie.

She's absolutely HYPED right now cuz NEW FRIEND.

Pinkie pie is positively vibrating especially since Alfie knows who she is and she has never met him before and he asks her if she wants to go grave robbing with him for some unicorn horns and she says yes.

Meanwhile, Gorg is covered in iridescent unicorn blood and jumps into the town squares fountain to clean it off, destroying the fountain in the process.

Mark decides to sample some of the pony blood and becomes a pony version of himself.

His cutie mark is the word "brisket"

Alfie and Pinkie rush outside to see What happened and now he's like "Hold up Mark is that you?" And Gorgs panicking because what happened to his friend and he does not trust ponies and Granny Smith ambles up to him like "Now now settle down. your friend's probably fine"

Gorg tries to trick Pinkie pie into coming down an alley with him all alone but Alfie brings up that she promised to go grave robbing with him and no pony breaks a promise.

Mark joins us on our trip to the ponyville graveyard.

Gorg stays behind and offers to give granny Smith a haircut.

Cursed shit insued

Gorg is at the fountain and Granny Smith has her back to him.

I have a better granny Smith impression than Rose so I'm roped into this.

Gorg accidentally pees on granny's head.

I panic and play the clueless old lady card and say "oh sugar. I didn't know you were going to give me a shampoo and rinse" and he hocks a loogie into her hair and rubs it in and discord is so disgusted by this that rewind time so it didn't happen and the only people who know that time has rewound are the party members.

Gorg ends up giving Granny Smith an emo haircut and she loves it cuz it reminds her of her rebellious days.

Cut to the graveyard where Pinkie is just desperate to give us cupcakes and I offer tradesies for my muffins and it's a deal she gives me the cupcakes and then she inhales the muffins tray and all and chokes to death.

Mark takes a bite out of Pinkie because the pony blood has made him hunger for more pony flesh and gains more power.

Discord's weakness is pee.

Alfie gets curious and samples some of the pony blood and becomes a pegasus pony minus the bloodlust cuz he scored high enough on the constitution save and only sampled a drop.

I do have bottles of various pony bloods now.

Cut back to Gorg who has opened a successful barber shop. Granny Smith is in the corner just feeling herself in the mirror.

Applejack gets in the hairdressing chair and ask Gorg if he can cut her hair and Gorg says "Yes. Do you consent to me taking a little off the top?" "Sure do, sugar cube." Gorg repeats the question two more times and Applejack says "yes now get on with cutting my hair sweet pea." And out of character Gorg says "I've asked her three times. I come from a different culture. Can this just be a culture dispute?" And Rose says yes.

Gorg chops off Applejack's head and adds her head to his belt.

He meets up with us at the graveyard and Alfie is just digging up graves and sawing off horns leaving flowers on graves as a way to say sorry for defiling your corpse. Muttering under his breath "it's going to be okay. It's going to be okay. Everything's going to be fine" because his childhood is getting more ruined than it already was

First grave we dug up was a fresh grave so of course Mark takes a bite out of the freshly buried body and becomes an alicorn because now he has the magic of all three pony tribes flowing through his veins.

Twilight shows up and Mark is like "Can you give me a hug? I could really use a hug." and she's like "you seem fine "and Alfie's just frantically shaking his head no. And Gorg says "Can I have a hug? My parents were killed by a cupcake." And she says "oh you poor thing of course!" and she gives him a hug and he hugs her to death.

Mark goes for the flank and then runs off on a blood lusted rampage heading to where Spike's body is and becomes a bat pony alicorn after feasting on his flesh.

Mark has jumped the shark

Alfie frantically goes searching for Rainbow Dash so she can warn the princesses about what's happening in Ponyville and finds her in her cloud house taking a nap and tells her 'Rainbow Dash we have to go to canterlot and warn the princesses. There's a bloodthirsty maniac on the loose! Your friends are dead!" And she goes "wait what?" and Mark gets a perfect 20 on an athletics check to see if he can kill Rainbow from wherever he is in ponyville she dies as a dagger pierces through the cloud and spears her in the gut.

At this point Mark is summoned to the graveyard face to face with Discord. Who is pissed off that he has killed his Fluttershy.

Alfie was going to fly to Canterlot to warn the Princesses himself. But the party is the only family he has left. He can't just abandon them and he's just muttering to himself that he wishes he could give Discord some spells that way he can bring Fluttershy back.

Gorg will remember this.

Discord has sobered mark up and Mark has no memory of what happened.

Mark wants to make a deal with Bob and Bob. Shows up out of nowhere and says hey Dad to Discord cuz Discord is his father.

There is nothing Bob can do and Discord gives us two options. Either we fight him or we travel to the afterlife to get Fluttershy's soul back I present an alternative option which would be to use my book to save her in her last moments but my campaign members choose fight Discord. The fight begins at dawn.

Gorg essentially ascends because he broke whatever pact he had with Kratos.

Gorg is no longer with the party, we all get a plus 4 on attack rolls.

End of that session

Next session Patrick, Quinn and Luna join us and they get a recap of what happened.

We are all ponies now.

When we first met Patrick, Mark told him that they were best friends and Patrick went along with it.

Patrick, upon hearing what happened, loudly wonders why they're friends in the first place.

Everyone chews out Mark and Alfie heads off to the Golden oak library cuz He wants to see if there are any new spells he can learn from there and also wants to check out the basement. He takes some of the books and we all head to the basement and see the Cutie Mark Crusaders who are plotting some new way to earn their cutie marks.

Today they're going to help Big Mac on the farm but little do they know Big Mac is dead, Applejack is dead, Granny Smith is dead. The first thing Alfie says when he sees them is "DON'T GO OUTSIDE" and He blocks the doorway and we have to break the news all their sisters are dead their families are just dead. Mark and I deceive them into thinking that there was just some completely unrelated alicorn psychopath that went on the loose and that discord is taking care of the alicorn psychopath at dawn and we make the decision to send them off to Appaloosa so Braeburn can take care of them while we sort everything else out.

We bribe them with cupcakes to make sure that they keep their eyes closed so they don't get extra traumatized. And as we see them off, the sun rises and we're all teleported by Discord to the battleground.

Patrick and Luna back out of the fight because this is kind of Mark's fault despite the fact that he was in an amnesia inducing frenzy and Alfie is conflicted because on one hand Mark is his closest friend. He's the first person he met in this universe. The closest thing he has to family now. But ultimately he decides to do the right thing and prevent even more suffering and death by going to the afterlife and retrieving the mane six with the rest of the party.

Mark summons Bob the Archfey saying that he wants to make a deal with him.

For his soul, name and memories of his little sister he makes this deal: If he kills Discord, I will be freed from my pact, we are free to leave the fey wilds, and have more of the supplies we need for that interdimensional portal book. If Mark perishes in this battle between him and Discord, he will essentially become a husk of his former self as an undead soldier for Bob.

Alfie and Mark share a heartfelt goodbye knowing this could be the last time they ever see each other. Mark gives Alfie his cloak as a memento, share a hug and Alfie gives him a salute and jumps into the hole that leads to the afterlife the other party members following after him leaving Mark to battle Discord solo.

In the afterlife colors are inverted it looks like ponyville but everything's off. Patrick approaches a background pony asking where the main six are and they turn around with white glowing eyes and screech at them before slowly turning their head back to the other pony they were talking to.

We venture further into this twisted town and see Applejack talking to Rarity, we say hey and Applejack's head just falls off and lands at our hooves. "Sorry sugar cube it happens sometimes" and we break the news to her that that wasn't normal. Everyone in ponyville is dead except for the CMC and we can get you back to the land of the living.

Then we go to Princess Twilight and she says "Ugh. It's you." And Alfie profusely apologizes saying that if he knew that that would happen he would have just come here by himself and not to worry cuz the OG killer is no longer with us. He ascended. She casts a spell on her vocal cords to project her voice and tells everyone to head to the green portal on the hill.

On a very distant hill is a flash of lightning revealing a silhouette of something reptilian with six heads that is very familiar to Alfie.

It's a false hydra. The false hydra that they fought in the third session. Alfie tries to tell Twilight about it and she just says "what false hydra?"

Alfie splits up from the rest of the group to get Rainbow Dash who's currently looking for Scootaloo. After talking to Rainbow Dash and letting her know that scootaloo is okay, Bob appears by his side at which Alfie has a couple of questions, the first of which being how the heck he keeps appearing out of nowhere and that that's a bad idea to do to someone who has PTSD cuz that might get you stabbed and the second being "Why did you make a deal with me?"

"Because you reek of foreign magic and frankly I want to dissect you"

"Surprisingly, that's not the first time someone has said that to me. The dissection part that is."

"Really?" "Yep. Uhhhh see ya." And Alfie just books it to Fluttershy's cottage.

I am so hyped for the next session.

I have my own custom world called Clandestine, Andest for short. I originally created Andest for a fantasy novel I was writing, but as soon as a friend of mine got me into DnD, I knew I had to convert it into a homebrew paradise. The underlying premise is that the world is so overflowing with mana that literally everyone is born with some sort of magical influence. I call them Aspects, and they operate kind of like if Cutie Marks from MLP combined with bending from ATLA. There are 13 in all, with all sorts of flavoring on top. The Aspects serve as a tool for RP, and an analogous way to gain power regardless of class/race etc.

I had two goals when making this world and it's lore. The first was to establish a world where racism just wasn't a thing. Due to the mana of the Aspects, we have an in-world reason for people to look like anyone they want to, regardless of racial features or other stuff they want to use due to mutations and bodily changes caused spontaneously by the magic. It is not uncommon for people to look different from their parents, which makes it easier for back-story establishment for them, as well as finding art for the tokens (we play on MapTools so art is a big deal). I also made the mutations mechanical, giving stats for stuff like prehensile tails, quadrupeds, and so on.

The second reason was that I am a huge fan of magic and mana and the potential of primordial energy, and I always felt it was a shame that only wizards and mages had access to its powers in fantasy settings. Letting a fighter coat his blade in flame is sick, or a barbarian with skin made of stone, things like that. I wanted more flavor, more potential of magic, and freedom both for character creation for players and world expansion for me (the dm). I get to add the cool stuff like floating islands, dungeons and artifacts without worry, since my self-established rules mostly restrict potency, not flavor, of whatever I make.

I love my world, and having started it as a novel helped me have a much richer environment for my players to explore. Having them alter its history as well has also been incredibly fun.
