Good Stuff: Rainbow Butterfly Unicorn Kitty

Fuzzy, Fantastic Fantasy Filled Friendships for the Family

Let’s get this out the way. That title is heavily syllabic like holy carp, 8 syllables and phonologically, it’s a Kingdom Hearts level disaster. I’ve seen some incredibly wordy titles but never for a western cartoon, it’s surreal. It’s not even one where you can shorten it like Jimmy Neutron or MLP it just feels nightmarish to my literary senses. In any case, we have our first Nickelodeon show of the year and it’s feelin’ awfully familiar. Especially the Unicorn Kitty. The Unikitty, to be exact...

UNIKITTY T-T-T-T-T-T-T-TWO, BABEEEEY!

But not quite. I know it can seem obvious and I’m not at fault for making this pretty obvious comparison, but like how every semi-decent story based cartoon is annoyingly compared to The Last Airbender, there is admittedly more than meets the eye. For starters, there are surprising references to mythical fantasy in this. We got rockin’ Anubis doggos, yetis, Binicorns, wizards, goblins, leprechauns, gods, dragons, different types of phobias, and many crunkin’ children creatures of folklore. It’s pretty imaginative in its worldbuilding in a way that isn’t just throwing random stuff for the kids to be in awe at, especially those not in the know about mythology.

Another thing that certainly sets this apart from Unikitty is in its theme of Friendship. This is more MLP than anything in that main character Felicity loves and supports everybody that isn’t the rat character that dresses up like a rabbit for no explicable reason other than feeling left out cuz... rats are drat in this world, I guess. Also, this series explores individuality in a way that, while a bit cliched, is respectable and the bromance between Felicity and her anubian doggo friend Miguel is especially a highlight of this series overall.

Good Feels All Around

Only drawback I can find is that the look of it and animation can be... I don’t know. On the one hand, it can be expressive, colorful, and more toned down than Unikitty. But on the other, unlike Unikitty, I wish the energy of the character movements can have a little more energy to it. Like, I don’t want to harp on flash animation to be like the likes of MLP or Wakfu, but this admittedly lacks that snap sometimes and can feel more like a show you’d see years ago. It’s not bad, but could use some tweaks to give the imaginative world the energy it deserves.

The music though can be pretty hyphy, I can’t lie

Allinall, this is most definitely a kids show in every way, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s nothing outlandish or a must see, but it at least deserves a watch on the grounds that’s it’s colorful and just an all around swell time. You might learn a thing or two, see some action, and it’s all centered around a rainbow cat with unicorn powers and butterfly wings. Honestly, what you see is what ya get, and they certainly give as far as Rainbow Butterfly *cough, COUGH* Uni... orn Kitty can provide. Seriously, that is still a mouth and type full.
