Five Ways SentiAdrien is a Retcon

Adrien’s a sentimonster now, but he wasn’t always. Here’s a list of things that wouldn’t have happened if Adrien was a sentimonster:

Chat Blanc

Epehemeral shows us what happens in a world where Gabriel Agreste learns his sentison’s identity. Chat Blanc shows us what happens in a world where Gabriel Agreste learns his human son’s identity. If Adrien was a sentimonster in season 3, then Chat Blanc would have ended with Gabriel winning just like he did in Ephemeral. But it doesn’t because season 3 Adrien was a real boy.

Gorizilla

Nooroo: Master, you don't really think Adrien could be Cat Noir?

Gabriel: I don't know. But he's hiding something for sure. Since his bodyguard has failed to keep an eye on Adrien, there's only one way for us to uncover his secret.

Yeah, put on one of the slave collars and say, “Adrien, tell me what you’re hiding from me?” Problem solved! Except Adrien wasn’t a sentimonster yet, so Gabe had to use an akuma instead.

Felix

As of season 4, Felix and Amilie know that the Agrete’s wedding rings are amoks, so why were they so obsessed with getting their hands on them back in season 3? What were they planning to do with Adrien? Why did Amilie think that was a reasonable request? There’s no way that she’d hand over her son’s ring! Easy answer: the twins cousins weren’t sentimonster yet and the rings weren’t that special. That’s why that plot goes nowhere and why Felix’s actions don’t match his actions after they decided that the boys were sentimonsters.

Origins

Adrien keeps sneaking out of the house to go to school and Gabe just yells at him, never using the slave collars. Plausible, I guess, but still hard to buy given how controlling he is. Why wouldn’t he use one of the rings? He already doesn’t care what Adrien wants and Gabe does not get meaningfully more controlling as the show goes on (it’s part of why season 5 completely fails to make him feel worse in my book).

Miracular

Cataclysms drive Sentimonsters insane, but kill humans, so Chat Noir probably should have gone insane here. Along similar lines, the fact that akuma powers work on him like a normal human is super weird because Adrien isn’t a true human. Can he break his bones? Does he even need to transform to fight? Do all sentimonsters have the ability to use miraculous? I have questions that this show will never answer because the answers don’t exist. That would require competent, well-thought-out lore.

why you should read Mystic Prince if you enjoyed ORV

Mystic Prince / Prince of Myolyeong (묘령의 황자) is a fantasy and action-adventure manhwa with art & story by Aheuredal (아흐레달) and in my humble opinion, an absolute hidden gem. it's literally one the best manhwas i've ever read (among the top 2) and i've finally gathered my thoughts enough to try to articulate why i love it so much, and hopefully convince you to give it a chance!

here's the official summary on webtoon:

An immortal emperor rules the Kingdom of Yeol, a divine country blessed by gods with awesome powers. After a thousand years of peaceful rule, the time has come for a new emperor to be chosen. This is determined by a series of trials, in which twenty princes with special powers who have trained since birth must compete. As all princes of varying personalities and agendas gather to partake in the trials, intrigue and possibly even bloodshed seem all but certain. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the other princes, the Fourth Prince Jeok-yeon Ryu hides a secret he must guard with his life.

Mystic Prince is incredibly unique in terms of story and execution that i can't really compare it to anything else but here's why i think you'll enjoy it, especially if you also liked orv:

strong-willed MC who's not naturally skilled but works extremely hard

said MC is willing to suffer and hurt themselves to achieve their goals (aka kim dokja-esque tendencies)

seemingly cold and aloof ML with yoo joonghyuk vibes at first, naturally gifted and seems to look down on everyone

...but is actually head over heels for MC and just doesn't know how to express his feelings

ensemble cast of incredibly complex and well-developed characters with different personalities and motivations

MC seems a little dense at times but they have a tragic backstory that explains why they're Like That

incredibly bisexual vibes !! like literally off the charts

slowburn romance that is cooking up such a great meal

MC and ML have actually known each other for centuries

characters go through trials that involve risking death

extremely unique lore and world-building

i said ML before but there are actually multiple potential MLs with how much complexity all the character dynamics have

beautiful character designs (literally over 10+ within the main cast and they're all so unique)

evocative writing and heartfelt monologues that seem taken out of a book of pure poetry

narratively significant motifs of fire and water (à la orv's black/white and reader/protagonist)

profound and realistic depiction of the inner feelings and troubles that the characters go through

incredibly heart-wrenching original soundtrack! (actually made me cry)

some of the most gorgeous art i've seen in any manhwa (seriously pls just open the 1st episode and look at the first few panels)

delicious gender fuckery

MC is actually cross-dressing afab (i personally hc them as genderqueer; korean doesn't have gendered pronouns but the official tl uses she/her pronouns)

bonus: they're built like a fucking tank (as seen here) like hello??? which is so refreshing to see for an afab MC

plus they're also canonically lacking in empathy but still deeply compassionate which again is really refreshing

i'm sure there's even more stuff i'm forgetting but these are just some reasons off the top of my head why i think this manhwa is so amazing

please do give Mystic Prince a chance, it's an absolute delight!! there are multiple beautiful covers but here's a couple of them, BE ART BAITED <3

and finally some of my personal reactions to Mystic Prince and also a note regarding the content warnings under the cut!

feel free to skip this part lol but personally when i look for recs, i love when people tell me their emotional reactions and how passionate they are about it! so if this tells you anything,

this is the ONLY manhwa to have made me cry so far (yes that includes the orv webtoon, but not the novel ofc) like actually ugly sobbing with snot and tears and everything lmao

(it's not all sad though! this manhwa will have you clutching your heart one moment and then cackling out loud the next)

and it's also the ONLY manhwa i've ever spent actual money on before the fan tl picked it up just so i could read the advanced chapters (i'm notoriously cheap so this says a lot imo)

and i'm not alone in this, every other comment on webtoon is people saying the exact same thing. the general consensus is that this is 100% a hidden gem (webtoon DP my behated why'd you have to shoot yourself in the foot like that)

also regarding the content warnings on the carrd: this was my first time making a list of cws (i don't think anyone else has made one yet?) and i was a little hesitant to add them, so i sincerely apologize if i missed anything!! if anyone else has anything else to add (cws or otherwise) then please feel free to send me a message and i'll be happy to edit it!!

Okay, well. I disliked just about everything about this final arc so if you loved it this post is not for you.

Repeated noble idiocy and San abandoning Vee in the wake of his grandma’s death is awful.

All this lying compounding Vee’s confusion and grief is just so gross, and everyone is complicit.

This constant sacrificial energy and suicidal shit from both Vee and San is NOT romantic. Romantic would be treating each other like partners and making decisions together.

Third’s function as the unwanted nice guy lecturing the ML is such a disappointing waste of his character and makes the romance feel even worse. If he has to keep telling San what to do it’s damaging to San’s character arc, and the show never even made use of his connection to Trai or let him have any real feelings about the things his past life self did. He feels like an audience insert Mary Sue instead of a real person.

Speaking of, the show’s themes about reincarnation and redemption and destiny feel so muddled. They went back and forth on who was Vad’s reincarnation and never settled it one way or the other, which they tried to sell as A Lesson but really just felt like a cop out. They seemed to be making a point about Vadfah and Third being opposite from their past doppelgängers, but then they undercut that by redeeming Vadfah at the end. They seemed to imply that fated destiny and soulmates don’t matter, but then explicitly talked about Third’s soulmate being on the way. I have no idea what the story believes about any of this, except that it doesn’t really want to take a stance. In the end, the central question of the mythology is dismissed with a shrug.

I’m also left unsatisfied with the stone’s lore in the end. I was a bit confused by there being no price for Vee’s life being saved by the stone, and @my-rose-tinted-glasses reminded me that San’s curse was from his deal with the goddess to live 100 years so he could find Vad. So in the end, there’s no actual price to pay for living artificially based on the stone’s magic. Kinda violating fantasy rules there but okay!

The show ended up being disappointingly tame on both the fantasy elements and the romance. The cracked out, propulsive, horny energy of the first half completely evaporated in favor of sappy, boring, and cyclical storytelling in the second half. No shade if you liked it but that is not at all what I want from a story in this genre.

I know this show had serious production issues and I’m definitely attributing the drop in quality in the back half at least in part to that. I still think Juu was the MVP and I hope we see that actress again very soon. And let’s get Daou and Offroad in that idol bl stat (with a decent writer, please). They’ve more than proven they can carry a show.

This is a selection of shows that I think would at least somewhat make sense if they crossed over with Miraculous and make an interesting special. So basically stories that take place in the modern "real" world and where the lore and rules of the world wouldn't completely break/clash with ML's (I think... I haven't seen most of these shows in a while 😅)

A "little" rant about the Magic System inside the Miraculous Movie.

Spoilers ahead.

ML Show : So we take inspirations from both the Mahou Shoujo and Superhero genres and mix them together. The magic system of the ML universe has clear rules. They can be bended, or played with but never broken. Each Miraculous grants a superpower and can be used once at a time. The Miraculous are intended to be used for the greater good but it all really depends on the Miraculous Holder. To protect their Miraculous, the main are following a secret identity rule, which contributes to the lovesquare that can lead to a diversity of situations and interactions between the same two people. The Miraculous is powered by a Kwami. Without a Kwami, the Holder cannot transform. The Akumas serve to create a Monster of Week. However, we use anybody and each have their reasons to have negative emotions and have power in-link to help their situation. Akumatization is also a consented deal, however HM usually is manipulative and deceptive enough to trick his victim into accepting the power he offers. Then it plays out like a game a flag in which Ladybug and Chat Noir team up. While there is battle, the heroes usually win through ruse to catch and break the akuma object in order to capture and purify the Akuma. With this system and lore, we have a good sandbox to back up as many episodes as necessary.

ML Movie : We don't have time for this. Whatever looks cool on-screen. Hey! How about multiple Akumas active at the same time? Or an Akumatized Hawkmoth that can turn water into magma or use Darth Vader's Force? That looks evil. And how about Cataclysm but just during that last battle? Lucky Charm? What's that? Not epic enough and too complex to came up with. No-no-no, let's just put a spell similar to the Miraculous Ladybug that rebuild the city at the end because everything is too much of a wreck after that showdown. No need for further explanation to the audience, even the new one we will reach. The characters have it figure it out. Also, Kwamis can manifest themselves even if they are powering up the Miraculous now and their Holder doesn't detransform. Not immediately. Actually the Holder can possibly transform even if they aren't wearing their Miraculous and Kwamis can just decide to transform their chosen one if this on is relunctant to become an hero. Oh and let's simplify so the Butterfly Miraculous is an EVIL Miraculous. Why is only that Miraculous Evil though? Pff! Who cares. We need a bad guy. For the Akuma just need a bit of negative emotion. Let's not dwaddle on why the person is feeling negative emotions and fixing their problem. In fact, Hawkmoth will mostly uses prisoners and other villainous goons instead so they get sent back in prison. The Akuma will possessed its host and is released randomly whenever we say the villain was KO'd. The heroes have no reason to keep their identity secret in the first place. A reveal could have even happen midway if we would have wanted, but we'll put it at the end to close the movie to make it appear we have wrap-up things.

All that to say, it is normal to adjust the rules to the format. Like the five minutes timer which serves in rising the tension inside an episode can be cut no problem for a movie adaptation. Even going with just the first 7 Miraculous of the Miracle Box works for a trilogy. But you still need rules that serve as your base that you will respect to make the magic system coherent to the audience.

Staff doesn't care about Terras anymore and I think they should hand over total ownership (Admins, mods and all) to people who actually care. I love Terras and don't want to see them die off, but it feels inevitable now.

honestly im tired of them playing hot potato with this project, it fails under any ownership its given and any passion that was once put in (arguably an incredibly small amount since its obvious this was a cashgrab from day 1) is completely wiped away

there are much better species and worlds to put your time and money into. what does terras offer?

a lazy staff team that is so focused on entirely separate projects that they cant even shit out a halloween event, and that gave so little of a fuck that they waited a full month after the birthday event was over to even raffle the designs, and that was seemingly held together by one staff member so much so that when that member left the team, the server had rule violations sitting for days at a time

a site that, despite having almost nothing added in the way of extensions, runs like shit because staff doesnt want to abide by recommended image sizes and overloaded the whole thing with enormously heavy images, to the point that now even after the images have been compressed oh so slightly, the site still runs like shit

a site that will never have any interesting changes or additions made (even the most simple) because staff is so incompetent with their own tools they fundamentally do not understand how lorekeeper works. this wouldnt be so much of an issue if they would hire someone experienced in lk (their site coder has said they have no idea how lk works and theyve never used it), or take on volunteers to add the most basic functionality, but they wont do that because they are again, so incompetent that they think a volunteer could just delete the whole site which is fundamentally impossible unless you give them your fucking admin login

no lore MINIMAL lore about, of all things, a stupid new subtype that nobody wanted. no publicly available lore about terra planet, society, anatomy, physiology, or even why these stupid things have fishbowls on their heads. if you want even a scrap of information, you have to scrounge through months upon months of messages in staff-answer, or play a stupid ass ARG

an abysmal design approval process. you will have your design denied for trait restrictions that are listed nowhere, and that staff let pass with their friends 2 days ago. if you ever try to bring up any terra on the ml as an example that they have approved the same design aspect before, you will ALWAYS be knocked dowm with “that design was approved before we updated the guides/it slipped through the cracks” even when the design isnt even a week old

no MYO slot sales, no fun opportunities for community interaction, fucking hell not even any events anymore because staff dont give enough of a fuck to slap something together for the month of october.

lazy adopts thrown together for a quick buck to the point they will have scribbly lineart, color spilling out, and unclear design aspects that they will shit out and sell to you for $90+.

a server that is so overloaded with toxic positivity that you will get dogpiled even for saying you dont like a certain video game.

just give up on terras at this point. its been a year and a half of this shit and it has never been at even a BASELINE standard of how a species should operate.

newly released species these days all think its acceptable to drop with just a concept and an empty lorekeeper and call it a day. i think everyone who participates in closed species needs to collectively come together and raise the standards that were set by the mother of all cashgrabs: chams. we need to stop enabling the species owners who give NOTHING to the project, the ones who release with no lore, shops, or trait sheets. i think we all should take our money to more fulfilling creators (in my experience, smaller species projects are typically so much more fleshed out than popular new ones hitting the market, but they often lack the publicity to flourish) and stop sinking money and so much time into people who dont put in any effort, and who dont WANT to put in any effort because they have no passion for the project outside of a paycheck.

ML DnD AU- Everyone just lies down groaning after the outcome of the Season 5 finale (except Gabriel and Lila). Félix couldn't make it to the session, so Alix resumed her role as DM since she had returned.

Adrien: "Are we still running on 'Wish remakes the universe' rules? Can we call it everyone being dead so we can start over?"

Alya: "I have conflicting lore notes. It was Equivalent Exchange first right?"

Gabriel: "Do you want to start making a character sheet, my love?"

Not really a Miraculous Ladybug fun, but looking in and the biggest thing I'm seeing fans complain about is that the show reads like a comic in that it just can't keep its lore straight.

The second biggest complaint I've seen was ML dropping Chloe's redemption arc

Oh boy you should see the objectively racist disaster of the comics they DID have, trust me turning it onto a comic wouldn’t solve a thing so long as they’re the ones writing them

But yeah, ML does indeed have a problem with keeping its lore straight and avoiding retcons; they latch on to the status quo so much that any progression before season 5 is pretty much undone by the end of the episode it occurs in, and maybe remembered in a later episode (and only that episode in particular) if it has relevance to that new plotline

The show basically operates on unique lore every individual episode, with Miraculous powers being tweaked, rules of the game being altered rather than expanded on, etc. The first one I can think of off the top of my head is the idea that the Rooster Miraculous suddenly has a lot of previously unstated constraints that weren’t in effect before - a retcon on its own, but it included the constraint that Miraculouses can’t copy the power of other Miraculouses, a constraint that the Butterfly and Peacock frequently contradict in the show both before and after this point

And as for Chloé, hoo boy… throughout season 1, Chloé was the stereotypical spoilt rich brat who’d call her daddy to help her fix whatever was bothering her, and she’d exploit this to harass and bully others. But in season 2, she begins to have some character development, both in that we meet her arguably emotionally abusive mother and Chloé finds a lost Miraculous, the latter of which being what kicks off a slow but steady redemption arc where she does indeed show signs of improvement both in and out of the mask; she’s loyal to Ladybug, she can work in a team when she puts her mind to it, she grows a little closer to Sabrina, etc. She’s still far from perfect, but even other characters acknowledge that the improvement is there

And then the season 3 finale basically erases all of that because Chloé is manipulated by Hawkmoth into willingly accepting an akuma, offering her the Bee Miraculous and using her parents as hostages in order to do so. The manipulation isn’t really registered by the writers, or maybe just not cared for, because regardless it’s seen as a full-on regression and betrayal that Chloé is totally all down for on her own. For the next two seasons, Chloé regresses way past her original season 1 levels of harm, and there are a lot of retcons to her relationships with others; suddenly she no longer cares about her dad, Sabrina or Adrien, despite her always caring about them even from the first episode, even if she doesn’t always show it in the clearest ways. Fans feel cheated by it, but Thomas Austruc, the show’s creator, has taken to Xitter to aggressively shut down all the fans implying that Chloé ever had a redemption arc whatsoever

But TA’s Xitter posts are a whole other story, and the Chloé situation beyond this is yet another long one I won’t get into here. But yeah, a lot of fans feel very cheated by the sudden drop of the redemption arc and TA arguing that it was never there to begin with and that fans were deluding themselves certainly hasn’t helped with that. If he wanted a damnation arc, the fall from grace had to be better written than just a largely sudden drop of her newly found morals and a child being blackmailed by the terrorist who has her parents hostage isn’t a compelling villain arc if the point of it is to prove that she was always bad and never good

Canon Felix. No matter what he does the fandom is uwu for this little white boy. When he's a villain it's 'ooo what a clever baddie' when he turns on a dime so he can get a girl it's 'aww he's just a little guy'. Handed keys to the plot, he's a writing crutch with a bad haircut.

17)Dumbest part of the Worldbuilding.

Broadly the 'have our cake and eat it to' way they flip flop on having a hard vs soft lore system. They want the prestige of a hard system with rules and lore and mechanics, but they want the ability to ignore any and all of this at a whim. Obvious example- 'You have a 5 minute timer until you are an adult' then out of nowhere in S5 'Timer gone with no buildup, you are adults at 14 now. GG have fun.'

The lore actually neutered Northstar fun fact because in Byrne's run he explicitly was PRO BOMBING shit he noted it was weird for him to be at Parliament without a bomb under his arm and there's something about him bombing mailboxes too. It's only later writers that were like well he was a ML and a separatist sure but uhhh he didn't know they bombed stuff :(( Byrne's Northstar was like enthusiastically pro bombing shit in the past and it ruled !!

Just piggybacking off your response to the anon ask that you posted a little while ago. I absolutely love fantasy stuff, and dragons are my favorite. I've found a couple really good dragon JK fics on tumblr, but I wish there were more. I guess it's such an obscure trope. Even hybrid isn't liked by a lot of people. I don't know why. I love the world building idea. There are no rules, and you can let your imagination run free to create. So I'm really glad you wrote a dragon fantasy piece. I hope you decide to write more fantasy stuff in the future, whether it be another dragon story, or vampires or fairies. We need more fantasy fanfics out there.

Lucky for you, I have 8 fantasy or fantasy adjacent WIPs right now, everything from vampires to A/B/O and demons. Then, there’s 11 on my ML already (including On Wings of Mist & Memories). I’m glad to be able to provide at least one more dragon JK fic :) !

The ‘no-rules’ aspect of fantasy is what attracts me the most, I think. I’m a huge world builder enthusiast and it gives me so much serotonin to do. I’m a big D&D and RPG video game enjoyer, too, which definitely bleeds into my fic writing when it comes to crafting lore and creating worlds. I love, love, love all things fantasy, pure and simple hehe :)

I am totally with anon, i have a character (that so happens to be a dainty) slowly catching up popularity and i plan on making a VRChat model, VTuber model and next year I'll have a stand at a convention where I'll sell merch of said character. My character has a very catching design and everyone i show this character to falls in love! And since I'm a comic artist, I'm also planing a comic with that dainty character.

I will not under ANY circumstances mention my plans in the server, on TH or anywhere near the dainty community!!! To avoid trouble and banning, i change the stockings, remove them or make the character wear long pants. She will stay a satyr (since it's kinda lore relevant) but the stockings will not be of importance in the lore and will be removed/changed. Pru can't punish me when the stockings aren't resembling the ML stockings now can she? That would be ridiculous to get punished for a character i designed. Only cause it's a dainty, that doesn't mean Pru owns it, at MAX pru might has say in the stockings, but that's about it.

I mean the rules for it are literally "make an au version" anyways since you're not allowed to use the dainty version as a vtuber anyways so go off

I think I read too many comics bc I never questioned why everyone believes Lila I just went "oh she's like Gambit from X-Men" and moved on. His secondary mutation is basically super-charisma; people naturally feel inclined to trust/believe him and he can easily convince anyone of anything. If you have solid evidence that immediately proves he's lying (ie. Marinette being Ladybug as she hears Lila call herself Ladybug's best friend) then his power won't work on you anymore. But if you try to prove to other people that he's lying they won't believe you. Anyway I know Astruc bases ML heavily off of comics so I figured we were playing by comic book rules with Lila.

I guess since it isn’t a pre established part of the universe’s lore that people believe dumb lies (though I guess people never suspecting either main hero should’ve tipped me off) I didn’t see Lila’s lies as acceptable within the context of the show

Idk I still feel like they could’ve been smarter about the whole ordeal
