The Evolution of Game Live Streaming in Vietnam: Platforms and Platformization
Imagine a world where you can watch your favorite gamers battle it out in real time, connect with a community that shares your passion, and even make a career out of playing games. Welcome to the vibrant realm of game live streaming in Vietnam! This blog explores how platforms and the process of platformization are reshaping the gaming landscape in Vietnam, offering insights, data, and inspiring stories.
What Are Platforms and Platformization?
The term "platform" has evolved significantly over time, encompassing various meanings from the material to the figurative. Originally referring to an elevated surface, it has come to represent a combination of computer hardware and software that runs a particular operating system (Walters 1990). In the high-tech domains, platforms are seen as a basis for change and innovation, integrating material, political, and technical aspects (Chia et al. 2020).
Platformisation, on the other hand, refers to the growing integration of digital platforms' business models, infrastructures, and algorithms into every facet of society (Helmond 2020). This process highlights the transformative impact of platforms on economic, technological, and cultural practices.
Game Live Streaming Market in Vietnam
The game live streaming market in Vietnam has experienced substantial growth, driven by a young population, increasing internet penetration, and a strong gaming culture. According to (Data Report 2023), Vietnam’s internet penetration rate stood at 79.1 percent of the total population at the start of 2023. In 2024, the projected revenue in the Game live-streaming market in Vietnam is expected to reach US$456.50m. The market is anticipated to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2024-2027) of 8.68%, resulting in a projected market volume of US$586.00m by 2027 (Statista, 2024).
Do Mixi Gaming: A Vietnamese Success Story
One of the most inspiring examples of success in the Vietnamese game live-streaming scene is Do Mixi. Known for his engaging personality and high-quality content, Do Mixi has become a popular name among Vietnamese gamers. His journey from a passionate gamer to a top-tier steamer offers valuable insights into the power of platforms and platformization.
The Journey of Do Mixi
Do Mixi started his streaming career on platforms like YouTube and Nimo TV. Leveraging these platforms' immense reach and technical infrastructure, he quickly grew his audience by providing entertaining and relatable content. His streams often include gameplay, commentary, and interactions with fans, creating a dynamic and engaging viewer experience.
youtube
With over 7.5 million subscribers on YouTube and 2.5 million followers on Nimo TV, Do Mixi exemplifies how platforms can amplify a content creator's reach and influence. His success is not just about numbers; it is about building a community. Do Mixi’s fans, known as the "Bo Toc MixiGaming," are highly active and supportive, showcasing the community-building potential of live streaming platforms.
The game live-streaming industry in Vietnam is a shining example of how platforms and platformization are transforming our digital landscape. With a growing audience, increasing monetization opportunities, and a vibrant community, game live streaming is poised to become a cornerstone of Vietnam's digital entertainment. The inspiring journeys of streamers like Do Mixi highlight the incredible opportunities available, paving the way for the next generation of digital stars.
As Do Mixi himself says, "Success in streaming is not just about playing games; it's about creating a community and sharing your passion with the world. If you have the drive and the dedication, the possibilities are endless." This quote encapsulates the spirit of platformization in the gaming world, where innovation and community-building go hand in hand to create new avenues for success.

Week 9 - Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming
The Evolution of Gaming
The gaming industry has undergone a remarkable evolution over the past five decades, transitioning from humble beginnings to a global phenomenon (Bankov, 2019). With advancements in hardware and internet connectivity, gaming has become increasingly accessible, leading to the rise of online distribution platforms like Steam and innovative revenue streams such as loot boxes and microtransactions. This evolution has reshaped consumer experiences and revenue models, marking a departure from physical copies to digital distribution networks (Bankov, 2019).
Understanding the Culture of Gaming
Since its inception, gaming has not only evolved technologically but has also fostered a unique culture surrounding players and their communities (Fu, n.d.). While stereotypes about gamers abound, the culture of gaming encompasses diverse demographics and behaviours. Gaming communities, both online and offline, have played a significant role in transforming games from mere entertainment to true cultural phenomena (Games, 2023). Events like Gamescom and DreamHack provide platforms for gamers to connect and showcase technologies, while community movements such as MixiGaming demonstrate the positive impact of gaming communities through charitable initiatives (Games, 2023).
The Rise of Live-Streaming in Gaming
Live-streaming has emerged as a prominent feature of gaming culture, offering a platform for gamers to engage with audiences in real-time (Li, Wang & Liu, 2020). Platforms like Twitch and YouTube Gaming have experienced exponential growth, with millions of regular visitors tuning in to watch streamers play and interact. Live-streaming not only fosters community building but also serves as a lucrative market for streamers, contributing to the development of the gaming industry (Li, Wang & Liu, 2020).
The Integration of Social Media and Gaming
The merging of gaming and social media has revolutionized both industries, enhancing connectivity and reshaping consumer experiences (Kerr, 2019). From early multiplayer platforms to modern communication hubs like Discord, social interaction has become central to gaming. Integrating platforms like Twitter and Twitch has transformed marketing and content sharing, while live-streaming sessions have contributed to the formation of gaming communities (Kerr, 2019). As technology continues to advance, this synergy is expected to deepen, offering new opportunities for community engagement and interactive experiences.
In conclusion, the convergence of gaming and social media has ushered in a new era of connectivity and innovation, transforming how games are played, shared, and experienced. As gaming culture continues to evolve, it is essential to recognize the diverse demographics and behaviours within the gaming community, while leveraging platforms like live-streaming to foster positive interactions and community building. By embracing the intersection of gaming and social media, we can unlock new avenues for creativity, collaboration, and enjoyment in the digital landscape.

Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming: Outstanding growth globally
Week 9: Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming
In recent times, the gaming landscape has seen a significant shift, moving from individual pastime to a vibrant communal experience. With the rise of gaming communities, social platforms, and live streaming, gamers worldwide have found new ways to connect, collaborate, and share their enthusiasm for gaming.
Viewed as social entities, gaming communities are clusters of individuals bonded by skills, expertise, and knowledge, functioning as virtual meeting points for discussions, tip-sharing, and camaraderie. Whether through online forums, Discord servers, or social media groups, these communities foster a sense of belonging and unity that transcends geographical and cultural barriers. Gamers can engage in communities centered around specific games, genres, or platforms, fostering a supportive environment where enthusiasts can revel in their shared passion for gaming.
The advent of social gaming platforms has revolutionized the gaming experience by integrating social features directly into games. Titles like PUBG, Fortnite, and Among Us have become emblematic of social gaming, offering players avenues for interaction, cooperation, and competition with both friends and strangers. From collaborative missions to multiplayer battles, social games promote teamwork, communication, and engagement, blurring the lines between gaming and social networking. Through online functionalities, players can connect with others across the globe, and it's essential to facilitate the addition or creation of in-game content (Wardhana, 2021).
Live streaming has emerged as a pivotal force in the gaming industry, enabling gamers to broadcast their gameplay to a global audience. Platforms such as Twitch and YouTube provide avenues for gamers to showcase their skills, entertain viewers, and cultivate communities around their content. Streamers engage with their audience through live chat, fostering interaction and a sense of community among viewers. With the rise of esports, live streaming has become an integral aspect of competitive gaming, allowing fans to follow their favorite players and teams in matches. Notable streamers include Ninja, Shroud, AuronPlay, and the most renowned Vietnamese streamer, MixiGaming.
The remarkable growth of gaming communities, social gaming, and live streaming has democratized gaming culture, making it more widespread, diverse, and accessible to all. Whether one is a casual gamer seeking connection with friends or a content creator aspiring to build an audience, the gaming world offers limitless opportunities for connection and creativity. As technology advances and the gaming industry evolves, one thing remains certain: gaming transcends being merely a pastime—it's a global phenomenon that fosters connections among people.

WEEK 9: GAMING COMMUNITIES, SOCIAL GAMING & LIVE STREAMING
This week's blog will take a different format because games are a fairly prevalent and familiar topic. We will talk about the game that is now leading in the Computer industry. What made them so popular?
Small note: I am a casual player who has tried various games such as PUBG Mobile, Valorant, Arena of Valour, Identity V, and others. But I'm not a professional gamer. All of the following evaluations and opinions are "personal opinions".
PC GAME
According to the "Top 10 Most Popular Online Games In 2023" list, which was updated on February 10, 2023 on the Sports Browser website, the most popular game among players is PUBG - Player Unknown Battlegrounds.
PUBG was released in 2018 by the publisher PUBG Corporation. According to Active Player statistics, PUBG have around 23.6M average daily players in 2023. In 2018, I watched a professional PUBG gaming competition in the Asia area called "PUBG Sea Championship 2018" and also a global event called "PUBG Global Invitational". The total evaluation of the organisation, the stage format, the presenter, and others is quite elaborate and monumental.
A variety of variables can contribute to a game becoming popular and well-liked by a large number of people. Here are some of the most important considerations:
Compelling gameplay: When it comes to the Batte Royale game mode, PUBG's gameplay has been built rather properly. Players can play alone or in groups of up to four. You will join with 100 other players on an island and battle for survival. The map element, as well as the random occurrence of prizes, make PUBG more appealing. Furthermore, weapons and ballistics are simulated in real life, so players must learn how to use each gun and control the number of bullets and recoil. PUBG is a game that promotes teamwork and communication.
Regular update & support: PUBG, which has a strong development staff, routinely delivers updates and helps players in order to keep the game fresh and innovative. PUBG is very interested in developing anti-cheat methods to maintain player fairness. PUBG also routinely announces new events and features to enable players experience the game from a variety of angles.
GAME STREAMING PLATFORMS
Nimo TV is a streaming platform that is similar to the previously mentioned Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, and Microsoft Mixer.
Nimo TV is a gaming-focused live streaming network. It enables gamers to broadcast their gaming live to a worldwide audience, connect with other players, and form a community around their content. Nimo TV provides a variety of services to assist gamers expand their following, such as in-stream contributions, chat features, and personalised suggestions for viewers. The platform also supports a wide range of gaming titles, including popular titles such as PUBG, Mobile Legends, and Fortnite. Nimo TV's objective is to provide a platform that allows gamers to share their enthusiasm for gaming with others, as well as to build a worldwide community of gamers who can interact, learn, and grow together.
STREAMER
Streamers are people who stream real-time video over the internet while playing video games or doing other things such as talk shows and making music. They build a following of followers who like watching and communicating with them throughout their live streams. Streamers can monetise their content through sponsorships, advertising, and contributions from their viewers.
Streamers are usually individuals who just know about the game and the operating environment on the network's platform. However, today I will show you another side of the streamer.
MixiGaming is a Vietnamese streamer that focuses on games such as CS:GO, GTA V, ARK, and others. The purpose of MixiGaming is to establish a community of gamers and fans while also providing chances for gamers to build professions via their content. The difference of MixiGaming streamer is that he donates to charity with donations in the last month of the year from viewers and donations from his own fund. This is an annual event that will take place every year from 2020 until the present. Some examples of MixiGaming's charitable successes include:
House of Love (a home for the elderly who live alone) - Nghe An Province
5 schools (build schools for children in underprivileged regions)
Providing assistance to flood victims in Vietnam
If you're interested, you can keep up with him on two platforms: YouTube and Nimo TV:
