with only a few days to spare, the rest of your christmas shopping is officially complete. every person on your list has been bought for, and each gift was chosen carefully.

thought was put into the wrapping paper as well. pretty paper, bows, even simple little gift tags to address afterwards, it was all perfect. you sigh as you flop down onto the couch, shopping bags crinkling against the floor once they're finally released from your grasp. it only takes a few minutes of relaxing for you to decide that there is no way you are going to do this, not alone that is. grabbing your phone to snap a quick photo, you send it to the only person who can help.

toge shows up at your door soon after, responding to you that the only way he would help is if you bought him dinner.

"thanks for coming, i just-"

a gasp cuts you off, and from by your side inumaki's face is wrought with concern. he raises an eyebrow at you while pointing at the multitude of bags and boxes. his fists move up, palms facing the air with a smirk. how much?

you roll your eyes. "hey, your gift is in there too. and it's...none of your business," you try to end the conversation quickly, thinking of a plan to snatch the receipts before inumaki can. he quickly plops down on the living room floor, grabbing the first box and shaking it. it rattles only slightly while he examines it, before gesturing it towards you.

you hum. "that one is for yuuta. it's a set of pens he told me about once," you join him on the ground, reaching for a gift tag and filling it out. you stop though, halfway through writing your name when you get a little distracted.

watching inumaki wrap a gift is how you think watching a professional chef plate a five-star meal would be like. he somehow cuts the perfect amount of wrapping paper without even measuring it three times to be sure (much like yourself). his delicate fingers smooth over the spot where the paper is joined together, placing a small piece of double-sided tape down. the ends are next, carefully folded with precision, and fastened in place. the present is perfect and professional, and not a single crinkle or bend in the paper. that's not even the best part.

"how many pieces of tape did you use?" you ask, completely baffled. all he does is laugh.

he holds up three fingers, not even looking at you before searching for the next gift.

"three?" he nods. "you're kidding. where did you learn how to do this?"

he knows your question is rhetorical, as it would take a long time to sign. questions like this one between the two of you are usually saved for later, once he has his phone to really get his thoughts out. for now though, he smirks, tapping his right thumb to his lips twice. it's a secret.

the next gift is a larger box, about the size of a shoe box. which, inuamki expects it to be. something for yuuji, maybe. he is mistaken though, as the box is quite heavy. he makes a dramatic groan, giving you a wide-eyed expression. you laugh, hoping he would grab that one before you could.

"that's for makki. it's a knife set she wanted," you explain, nodding as you use the seventh piece of tape on your very small perfume box for nobara. inuamki grins at that, before pointing at the gift and scoffing. he has one palm up, one palm down, alternating their positions. messy.

"leave me alone!" you groan, finally taping down the last corner. it's wrapped, that's for sure. inumaki has the audacity to laugh. "shut up toge! it's the thought that counts, right?" he points to it once more. "oh, it's a perfume for nobara. she showed it to me this summer when we were at the shops."

inumaki finishes makki's gift in a quarter of the time it took you, even adding a little bow to rub it in your face. he rubs his hands together before sliding a small box to you, and a larger one to himself to save you the trouble.

the larger one is something for panda. he had mentioned how cold it was getting, and you thought a heated blanket might be perfect. inumaki hums at the box, a little jealous before giving a pout.

the smaller one, which rests in your palm, was one you forgot to hide. toge points to it, and you panic.

"m-megumi, it's a new c-collar for one of his dogs," you stutter out a lie, keeping your head down as you try to wrap it quickly. thankfully inumaki continues on, gliding his scissors through the wrapping paper with ease.

the box is actually holding a simple ring. a plain gold band, with a beautiful deep purple stone set right in the middle. dainty and simple, but really quite beautiful. as most of the gifts you bought, this one really stood out to you. inumaki loves to wear rings from time to time, mostly simple or cool ones the two of you find on missions. the stone is the exact shade of his eyes, plus you thought it would look beautiful in contrast with his pretty, pale fingers.

you spent around fifteen minutes looking at the ring before you finally decided to just do it. a few weeks ago, you had the realization that your love for inumaki may be more than just platonic. his hugs began to feel tighter, heavy with adoration that wasn’t just friendly. your gaze landed on his lips more often than not, and every time the two of you were alone you felt your stomach flutter.

the day you realized your love for inumaki was when the two of you were getting lunch with nobara, gossiping and carrying on when the server slipped inumaki their number. he was polite of course, taking the slip of paper with a wave and his eyes smiling over his jacket, but you felt your heart sink. nobara noticed of course, talking with you about it later, when it finally hit you.

you decided to make this christmas gift a way to show your love, your feelings, your adoration and care all in one. and hopefully, convince yourself to finally confess.

the two taps of inumaki's fingers on the box in his lap draws your attention away from the box that feels very heavy in yours.

"oh, that's for yuuji! it's a..." you think for a second while he shakes it close to his head, but it doesn't make a sound. "it's some socks actually." his pointer finger pulls away from his nose as he laughs. boring.

"it is not! he asked for them! i promise," you hold your hands up and he snickers.

inumaki wouldn't want to be anywhere else tonight. he was overjoyed that you texted him. every minute he spends with you is perfect. he was actually hanging out with panda, and he wouldn't admit it but he did have plans to see a movie that night with panda and yuuta, but yuuta wouldn't let him. not that he's complaining, but inumaki feels nervous around you now. he feels anxious, the love he's grown to have for you feels suffocating at times. but, he's almost positive that you don't see him in the same light. why would you? the prettiest girl he’s ever seen surely has her eyes on someone else.

"that's the last one," you sigh, pointing at the final box at his feet. he grabs it, laughing at the amount of presents he's done in the span of your two. he thinks it’s cute, the scrunch of your nose and narrow eyes when you focus on getting the tape just right.

inumaki’s thumb rests under his chin, his pointer finger bending twice. who?

“megumi! it’s a matching set of food and water bowls for the dogs, i thought-“ you stop yourself when he raises his eyebrows at you and hums. “i-well..”

he tuts, scooting closer to you, only inches apart. his heart is racing, but he doesn’t show it. he looks up at you, purple eyes glimmering in the low light of the christmas tree. he picks up the wrapped box in your hands and shakes it lightly, gesturing it towards you, then to megumi’s real gift. his palm goes up, before making a hang loose motion and tapping his chin, worry washing over his face. what’s wrong?

you sigh, deep and a little shaky. your mind flashes back to that lunch, nobara telling you on the walk home to tell inumaki, that he might feel the same way. you close your eyes for a moment, opening then to meet inumaki’s eyes.

you soften immediately, met with the small smile of your best friend. his hair is messy, face exposed to show you his pretty tattoos and soft lips, which turn down into a small pout when you don’t speak.

“nothings wrong, it’s just…it’s stupid, really.”

his brows furrow and he shakes his head. you exhale, putting the small box on his knee that rests right next to yours.

“it’s for you.”

he points to himself, eyebrows raised. you nod, pushing the box further into his lap. both of his hands from a y shape, lowering down to his hips. now?

you give him a nervous laugh and nod. he carefully unwraps your rather rushed wrapping, shaking it at you and giving you a goofy grin before fully unwrapping it. popping the top off from the small box, he sees the ring.

the two of you stare, at the ring than each other. his mouth opens and shuts, oohs coming from his lips and mouthing wow to you over and over. you light up at his excitement. at the very least, at least he loves it.

“try it on!” you nudge him, and he picks up the ring, slipping it on his middle finger. he moves his hand around, watching the small stone catch in the light, before signing thank you over and over.

“you’re welcome, toge. merry christmas, i’m glad you like it. i saw it in the store and thought of you right away,” you explain, watching as he rises from his spot to rifle through his things by your front door. he returns quickly, holding a box of similar size in his hands. he places it on your knee as you did moments ago, signing now once more.

“okay, okay. you didn’t have to get me anything, you know.” he rolls his eyes at that and scoffs, holding his conveniently ringed finger up at you.

in your box sits a dainty gold chain. you pull it out and hanging from the chain, is a small purple diamond, almost identical to the stone resting on his finger right now. you gasp, looking up to see a wide smile.

“toge it’s stunning! how did you know?” he simply shrugs, shuffling over on his knees to grab the necklace from your finger tips. he kneels behind you, moving your hair out of the way to fasten it behind your neck.

“thank you so much, i don’t know what to say,” an airy laugh slips from your lips and you reach to hold the stone between your fingers, completely shocked that this is even happening.

inumaki feels like the room is spinning. he wants to kiss you, kiss your neck, kiss your cheek, kiss your lips. he can’t take it anymore. when he joins you back on the floor, you shake your head.

“i seriously don’t know what to say, besides thank you,” you smile, and he smiles back. his hand comes up, index finger, pinky, and thumb raised. i love you.

your jaw drops, heart racing and mind blank.

“toge,” you breathe, and he signs it again. then again. he grabs your hand in his, looking at you in the eyes.

“i love you too,” you whisper, worried if anyone else hears this all may stop, everything just in your imagination, much like the other daydreams of this moment you’ve created.

toge leans forward, eyes moving to your lips and back up, a wordless gesture but you know just what he means, you nod and not a second passes before his lips are on yours. he sighs into the kiss, and his lips are softer than you ever thought. he only pulls away when he’s good and breathless, opening his eyes to see yours looking right back at him.

he leans back against the couch, pulling you into his arms. you feel dizzy, trying to pinch yourself to make sure this is all real. inumaki signs it once more, which you repeat. he reaches his ring clad finger up to your necklace, lightly tapping the stones together, making you giggle.

“merry christmas, toge.”

he kisses your forehead, and you snuggle into his chest a little closer. while you’re distracted, he grabs his phone from beside his thigh and quickly snaps a photo of the two of you, angling it to get you cuddled into his chest, necklace still visible. he sends it to his group, making sure yuuta and panda see how his night ended.
