I know this is like a week later, but the character 紅美鈴 from Touhou had her name transliterated as Hoan Meirin in one of the early print works (Perfect Memento in Strict Sense), which was written by ZUN. In a later fighting game, it's transliterated as Hong Meirin. So although the pinyin is a little butchered, it's presumably intended to be pronounced in the Chinese way.

Notably, Touhou does have some other Chinese characters (純狐 and 霍青娥) whose names are certainly pronounced in the Japanese way (Junko and Kaku Seiga), due to showing up in games where their names are printed in the Latin alphabet in the top left of the screen when you fight them. Their names are also transliterated in the Japanese fashion in print works. It's interesting!

yeah, afaict the "japanese fans calling her china because they couldn't decide whether to call her hong meiling or kurenai misuzu" story is entirely a product of the anglophone fanbase

I'm still a bit curious to track down the story's complete provenance, but I think that's probably above my level

One of my favorite Touhou things is how after Scarlet Devil Mansion people weren’t totally sure how to actually say Hong Meiling’s name until Immaterial and Missing Power gave a romanized spelling of her name because 紅 美鈴 has the Japanese reading of “Kurenai Misuzu” and people that werent totally sure if she was Chinese in SDM (or just didn’t know the Mandarin reading of characters) would sometimes use that name and its the origin of the Japanese Touhou fandom meme of everyone forgetting Meiling’s name or just calling her “China”

My Review of Fushigi Yugi

For anyone in the fandom, here is what I have available to stream at the moment. Most of these things are already ready to go, what isn’t can be prepared for stream in a night or two, so I only need some advanced notice. I’m available to stream with notice, most Saturday and Sunday evenings, U.S. Eastern Standard Time.

I stream via Cytube. Certain things that are hard to rip may have to be streamed via old fashioned Livestream.

I haven't purchased anything in a while ‘cause adult life comes first, but hope to remedy that soon. There’s plenty of other fans on tumblr with access to more recent shows, and the shows of other troupes.

If Hong Meiling is Meiling, then why Seiga Kaku isn't Kaku?

Kaku Seiga is the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese name HuoQing'e. So basically she translated her name into Japanese and is using it as a Japanese name. So we translate it as a Japanese name. This is unlike Hong Meiling, who still pronounces her name in Chinese (and Japanese people being unable to read her name is the source of the “China” meme). Hong Meiling pronounced in Japanese would be Kurenai Misuzu (Misuzu being the given name).

For what it’s worth, the much bigger issue is Chang’e, who’s actually being called Jouga in the Japanese text. But the early translators re-translated her name into the more familiar Chinese name for the mythological figure. This creates some weird inconsistencies in how we handle things. Like, why don’t we call Seiga Qing’e?

Incidentally, Jouga shares a kanji with Seiga (in the same way Chang’e shares a hanzi with Qing’e) so there are also some Japanese memes about Chang’e and Seiga.
