for my mistyfoot-in-the-fox-trap au.

mistyfoot does not tell anybody what happened that day, when hawkfrost intended for brambleclaw to kill her. who would help? she cannot forget how her clanmates turned on her, the sneering remarks about her heritage. she cannot forget that leopardstar appointed her deputy only to push tigerclan into the past. she cannot forget riverclan's compliance in the moons of hawkfrost's scheming and undermining and stirring trouble.

so she cannot tell. she can only hope to outlive leopardstar. she can only hope that, once she's leader, riverclan will be receptive to change.

years later, bramblestar's life is stolen by a vengeful ghost. good riddance, mistystar thinks, relieved to never sit beside him in the great oak again.

but squirrelflight is shattered, and mistystar respects squirrelflight. the daughter of her old friend, brave and loyal. moreover, mistystar sees herself and blackclaw in squirrelflight's own tumultuous relationship.

and... if she's being honest... mistystar understands her birth mother a little more, after watching squirrelflight's life fall apart and be put back together again.

so mistystar approaches the grieving cat to offer her condolences. but squirrelflight hasn't forgotten those arguments over hawkfrost, those nights spend burning with anger. she hasn't forgotten hawkfrost's mysterious death or the way brambleclaw avoided her gaze after. she hasn't forgotten what her mate has been hiding from her.

the question slips out. what happened?

bluestar's prophecy

bluestar spending the last months of her life convinced her entire clan are traitors out to get her, fireheart desperately acting as a bridge between them even though the clan resents and blames him for their problems, only to remember in her last moments how deeply she loved them all and is loved by them

mistystar spending her entire life pretending that her whole clan didn’t allow what happened to her + stonefur + their apprentices to happen, putting aside her bitterness and grief and rage to be a good leader to them, feeling like her son reedwhisker is the only cat she can truly trust to have as her deputy, hoping desperately she made the right choice by staying. and then finally, when she is the oldest cat in the clans, she gets the chance to reform things, to change the rules to prevent something like tigerclan from ever happening again, only for her clan to look at her and say you’re fucking crazy, why would you want this, that could never happen again, maybe somewhere else but not here, and in her last moments while her last precious child is far off in the woods being murdered and her heart is giving out she realises her mistake

So I was looking through the Minor Characters of River, and....

This is the spirit that promises Mistystar is safe. Presumably the spirit that came to pick her up.

I started wondering who this was, since it seems like we will never know. I looked through cats close to Mistystar to see if anyone had green eyes. I looked through all her relatives, even her mentor and 2 dead apprentices, no one had bright green eyes.

Perchkit has either blue or green eyes, but they aren't described as bright. Crookedstar has green eyes as well, but again, not bright.

You know whose are bright green?

Mistyfoot and Stonefur in the graphic novel…

Assuming that’s Stonefur on the right (Due to the torn ear - he’s described prominently as having torn ears) and Mistyfoot on the left. Stonefur has a chest marking like Bluestar!! And a nicked eyebrow on the same side as his cousin Whitestorm. Mistyfoot has the light eyebrows like their mom though

Mistyfoot is darker than stonefur fans (me) are so winning. It’s hard to be sure in the lighting, but to me it looks like Stonefur’s fur is closer to Bluestar’s than Mistyfoot’s is

teaser for something i might never finish because there are like 20 panels. i've always thought of bramblepaw rejecting tigerstar as the moment his arc should've ended, but then i had an idea for this scene that sets up his lifelong struggle with insecurity and avoiding responsibility for his actions.

here we have bramblepaw rejecting his father, not primarily because he's appalled by his father's actions- in fact, he's more than a little tempted to join a clan where he would feel trusted and respected- but because he can feel firestar at his shoulder and thunderclan at his back, all watching him, judging him, waiting for his choice.

this would nicely contrast brambleclaw's dilemma with the fox trap, where there are no eyes on him, no public opinion to base his decision on. what does he want to do? who is he without the affirmation of others?

(i still think mistyfoot should've been caught in the fox trap, not firestar. for one thing, i think it makes hawkfrost a better manipulator. brambleclaw doesn't entirely like mistyfoot, and also he's much more likely to murder his brother's political rival than his own clan leader. brambleclaw does pause to consider killing mistyfoot but ultimately saves her, killing hawkfrost instead. mistyfoot is wary of brambleclaw- she saw him hesitate- but she doesn't have proof, and so whatever cover story they bring back to their clans can not implicate brambleclaw enough for his deputyship to be stripped away. (it is so stupid that brambleclaw is rewarded with remaining deputy after pausing to consider killing firestar.) then mistystar and bramblestar would have an interesting dynamic in avos and tbc. but also i just really like the parallel to bluestar and tigerclaw.)
