Ghoulette Appreciation Week 7
Also, a little Valentine's Day fic! 💕
back on schedule, babyyy
Week 7: “Can’t you see how much I love you”/love confessions & makeovers/dressing up
The annual Valentine's Day costume ball is coming up at the Abbey, and Aurora can't wait to attend in matching costumes with Mist. One small issue: she has to ask her first.
Rating: T Content: Fluff, Mistrora being cute and in love, allusions to sexual themes Words: 2002
This one got out of hand quite quickly! Happy Valentine's Day if you celebrate! 💕
Read below or on AO3!
At the Abbey, the annual Valentine’s Day costume ball was coming up. Because what said “Satan-worshipping-church” like a debauched disco on a Saint’s memorial day? At these parties, the ghouls and humans intermingled freely, and nights often ended in more than just intermingling. For the ghouls, it was also a night of freedom from their masks, all the more appreciated by the newer ghouls with their oppressive helmets.
Aurora couldn’t wait. This was her first Valentine’s costume ball topside, and if it was anything like the other parties she had been to topside, it would be a blast. From the minute it was announced, she had been thinking of what her costume should be. Halloween had been incredible, everyone dressed some kind of spooky or sexy, or both. Aurora had matched costumes with the other touring ghoulettes Cirrus and Cumulus, going as The Plastics from Mean Girls.
Aurora wasn’t sure if she wanted to continue her chick-flick move theme for this party. She wasn’t even sure what she wanted to go as. What she did know, is that she wanted to coordinate with her girlfriend, Mist. Was that even the correct word, Aurora wondered to herself? They weren’t mated yet, but they were… something. The humans had more words than they could possibly need for these situations, Aurora could surely borrow some.
There was one slight issue with this plan, however. Mist famously did not attend costume parties at the Abbey. Aurora figured her best chance at going with Mist was to come up with a costume concept the older ghoulette couldn’t resist.
This was going to be a challenge: Aurora’s aesthetic and media preferences didn’t exactly align with Mist’s. While she would happily go as anything pink, princess-y, or otherwise hyperfeminine with a 2000s movie influence, Mist was quite the opposite. She was more into dark colours, androgenous styles and fantasy novels. Aurora was sure there had to be some crossover to explore though.
Putting aside her initial dream of matching Barbie: The Princess and the Pauper costumes, she tried to think closer to what Mist would choose. Certainly nothing involving a dress or a skirt, she knew the thought of wearing them made Mist’s skin crawl. What about a knight? Heroic, Big Sword, rescue the Princess from a big tower? Aurora wasn’t the sort of Princess that would need rescuing though.
“What about dragons?” she mused aloud to Sunshine one evening, watching the multi ghoulette crouched on the floor sewing sequins onto a pair of intricate butterfly wings.
“I think Swiss and Phantom are doing dragons…” Sunshine hummed, almost cross-eyed with concentration, “something about dragon and dragon rider.”
Aurora rolled her eyes and mimed gagging, as Sunshine looked up from her work to snicker at her reaction.
“Yeah, you might want to steer clear of them all night. Swiss gets a bit carried away on Valentine’s.”
Aurora flopped backwards onto Sunshine’s bed with a huff, “What are you going as? Maybe I can convince Mist to do a ghoulette group costume?”
Sunshine proudly held her wings aloft, “I’m a butterfly, and Mountain’s going as a caterpillar! He’s still got about fifty pom-pom feet to sew to his outfit before the party.”
“They look amazing Sunny!” Aurora looked on with envy. At this rate she was going to end up going as a lonely cat without a date.
“Why don’t you just ask Mist to go to the party with you, Rory? She might have an idea for your costumes.”
“Maybe…” Aurora rolled onto her front to face Sunshine properly, “How should I ask her?”
Sunshine sighed, setting her wings to the side and moving to sit next to Aurora. In times like these she really felt like a big sister to the newest ghoulette.
“The same way you asked her to be your girlfriend, petal. But maybe with less references to movies she hasn’t seen.” Sunshine tossed an arm around Aurora’s shoulders as best she could in their awkward position on the edge of the bed, “Besides, there’s no way she’d say no, Mist is so head over heels for you that Satan Himself could see it from the pit!”
Aurora hoped she was right.
Later that day, Aurora steeled herself to ask Mist to go to the Valentine’s ball together. She found Mist where she often was when she didn’t have duties, sat reading on the stone bench next to a small, secluded pond. Mist looked up when she heard footsteps approaching, and seeing her wide smile as Aurora approached made her heart stutter in her chest.
“Hi Moonflower, I thought I’d find you here.” Aurora sat down next to Mist, the pair instinctually shuffling as close together as possible, pressed to each other like magnets; shoulder to hip to ankle.
“Hello Sweet Thing, come to keep me company?” Mist set her book down to snake an arm around Aurora’s waist and press a kiss to the corner of her lips, seeking permission to deepen the kiss. Aurora giggles against her lips, happily losing herself in Mist’s embrace.
When they eventually broke apart for air, Aurora remembered why she had some come find Mist in the first place.
“So…” she started, trying her best to sound casual, “are you going to the Valentine’s ball?”
“Why do you ask?” smirked Mist, “are you inviting me?”
Aurora forgot what she was going to say, not expecting Mist to see straight through to what she was asking so quickly. She was flustered, stuttering out some sounds that could possibly have been interpreted as a “yes”. No one else could manage that quite like Mist.
“So, what are you going as then?” asked Mist, reaching out to play with a piece of hair behind Aurora’s ear.
“I’m not sure yet, I was hoping you might have an idea actually. I want us to go as something we both like.”
“I’ll be happy in anything, as long as you’re there.” Mist cooed in her ear, “I’d turn up with nothing but my unglamoured fins, if that was what you wanted.” Her cool and delicate fingers traced over Aurora’s neck, where gills would be if she had any, and Aurora gave in to the carnal distraction of Mist’s smooth tongue and fingertips. The costume party didn’t seem so important anymore.
Stuck polishing the wooden pews in the chapel the next day, Aurora thought more on Mist’s comment. Unglamoured fins. Creatures of the Sea. She started formulating a story in her head. She could still be a princess, but how about a mermaid princess, with the alluring voice of a siren. Mist often called her my sweet siren after all. Mist could be a beautiful pirate queen trying to pillage the mermaid’s lands, but ending up beguiled by her song convinced to go adventuring upon the high seas together.
Mist would hopefully like the costume too, a blouse loose enough around her gills, not an overly “girly” costume, but still badass. Rory lost herself in her daydream, fleshing out her perfect Halloween costume idea and backstory, until she realised that she has been polishing the same armrest for ten minutes.
This idea seemed perfect for them; dressing for a story no one but them knew. They’d tried to keep their relationship a secret for so long, even though they later learned that they hadn’t been in the least bit subtle, and their respective packs had seen through them near instantly.
She dropped by Mist’s pack dorm on the way back to her own quarters, to suggest her idea. If she’d been surprised by Mist’s enthusiasm to accompany her to the ball, she was even more astounded by her interest in the costume. Mist had all but begged to make her own, and to keep them a surprise from each other until the night of the party.
For the rest of the week leading up to the party, she spent her spare evenings in Sunshine’s room, joining her on the floor to sew sequins onto her own costume. Sunshine was predictably now making Mountain’s costume for him, attaching fist-sized pom-poms to a green zip-up hoodie. She had asked Cirrus and Cumulus if they wanted to join their crafting sessions, but they had claimed their own costumes, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, were already finished.
Little did Aurora know, that Mist had already enlisted the air ghoulettes to help her with her own costume, showing her how to stitch frills and ruffles to the cuffs of a blouse, and embellish the rest of her outfit in a way befitting of a pirate queen.
The evening of the Valentine’s day ball finally arrived, and Aurora was buzzing with anticipation as she waited for Mist to knock on the dormitory door. She had insisted on coming by before the party to collect Aurora. Eventually, there were three sharp raps on the door, and Aurora had to force herself to count to ten before she threw it open.
"Ahoy! I be here t’ collect me Princess!” Mist grinned widely, flourishing a plastic cutlass bedazzled with crystals. Aurora looked at her outfit in wonder; Mist looked ferociously beautiful. The delicate linen fabric of her blouse rippled in the breeze from the hallway, showing off the numerous gold swirls stitched along the frilly cuffs. The cut of her tight leather pants was enough to make Aurora’s mouth water, her long legs emphasized by the tall boots she was wearing, also decorated with rhinestones and gold. But nothing quite compared to the costume jewellery she was practically dripping in; body chains, hooped earrings, hammered metal arm cuffs. She looked every inch the terrifying pirate queen she was meant to be.
“Mist…” Aurora whispered, in awe, “you look incredible!” Mist broke character to blush at the praise, full of compliments of her own for Aurora’s sparkling bodice and mermaid “tail”.
Their tender moment in the doorway was interrupted by the boisterous entrance of a sparsely-clothed dragon and his equally underdressed rider, off to join the other ghouls that were pre-gaming in the kitchen.
“Woah Mist, you look awesome!” hollered Swiss, clearly already in the party spirit. Mist straightened her spine, and glared mock-haughtily at the multi-ghoul,
“'Tis yer Royal ‘ighness Cap'n Mist t' ye, ye rum-soaked scalawag!” she leered at him with a dangerous grin. Swiss looked like he was torn between being terrified and turned on, but was saved from having to justify either reaction by Phantom dragging him away to the kitchen. When the door closed behind them, leaving both ghoulettes alone in the entrance hall of the dorm again, they collapsed into each other’s arms in peals of laughter.
“His face Mist! You’ve given the poor guy a pirate crisis!” Aurora managed to catch her breath just enough to talk between fits of giggles.
“It’s not him I feel sorry for, think about Phantom!” they both promptly dissolved into laughter again. “Poor Bug…” mused Aurora, as she dragged Mist by the hand to her room, before they had to leave for the party proper in the Abbey’s main hall.
“You really do look amazing, Waterlily.” Aurora smiled at her as her bedroom door swung closed behind them.
“So do you, my Songbird, you’re always the most beautiful thing in every room, but tonight you look exquisite.”
Aurora pulled her onto the bed and into a kiss. They had time for a brief distraction while the other ghouls drained their liquor supplies.
“I can’t believe you went to all this effort!” pulling away, Aurora ran her hand down Mist’s arm to admire the little details of her outfit. “I didn’t even think you would want to go at all!”
“Can you still not see it?” asked Mist, raising Aurora’s chin with the tip of one long finger, “This is for you. Everything is always for you. I’d do anything just for one more smile from your beautiful lips.” She brushed across them, soft and gently parted, with her thumb. “Can’t you see how much I love you?”

hehe so what if
Aurora's had a little crush on Mist for a while now ever since she got summoned. She walked into a practice room once after hearing someone playing bass, because she was looking for Rain, but it was actually Mist--and she just stood there for a second because god she looked so cool and...her hands...??! Eventually she realised she's been staring because Mist had stopped playing and looked up (probably asked 'can I help you' or something like that) and Rory blushed and apologised before running away.
Days later she works up the courage to go to Mist and asks if she would like to teach her bass. It was an excuse just so she could spend more time with the water ghoulette and get to know her—really, she never had that much interest in the instrument until she’d saw Mist play the other day, and she could have just asked Rain. Mist kinda eyed her up and down (which did not help Aurora’s totally harmless crush), a little suspiciously, but she agreed in the end. So they began with the basics--it wasn't too hard in the beginning since Aurora already had some knowledge of chords and scales, but once they moved onto riffs she started struggling a bit. The strings were too hard and her hands were small and the instrument was too heavy. But when she began getting frustrated, huffing and frowning, Mist sat down behind her and covered Aurora’s hand with hers, correcting her fingering and posture and Aurora died a little inside. She’d forgotten about her little ploy until now, having genuinely enjoyed playing the instrument, but now with Mist pressing into her back and cool slender fingers covering hers, her breath tickling her ear when she quietly gave instructions—she found it hard to even breathe.
When she finally mastered the passage, Mist smiled, her eyes twinkling. “Good girl,” she said, and Aurora nearly passed out.
ok but what if we gave Aurora a bass tho?

Ghoulette Appreciation Week 8
Week 8: Coffee Shop AU & Sickfic
I've been excited for this one! Back to the Midwest Emo Ghouls AU, because they just won't stay outta my head for long!
When Mist doesn't show up to Aurora's coffee shop, she gets worried. Or, Mist and Aurora are hopelessly crushing on each other, but neither seems to realize their feeling are mutual.
Rating: G Content: Fluff, secret crushes, Rory taking care of Mist when she has a cold. Words: 2651
It would be remiss of me to write a Midwest Emo Ghouls Coffee shop AU and not mention @midnight-moth's ficlet (which I think technically they said is only adjacent to this AU? but I wrote this before double checking, oopsie!) with coffee-shop!Aurora and record-store!Mist, the og fic that had me sold on Mistrora! (go read it!)
As with anything I've written for this AU, all credit goes to @herbal-quintessence and friends for its creation, I've picked and chosen my favorite hcs for the ghouls when there are multiple, and for any other inconsistencies with the original creators's hcs and timeline let's just say I'm operating on a different branch at an indeterminant point in time, haha..!
Read below, or on AO3!
The screech of the coffee machine snapped Aurora out of her daydream. She shook her head slightly to dislodge her leftover thoughts, still drifting around about her favourite customer. Aurora kept expecting Mist to walk in the door any second, and she didn’t dare try to meet her eyes while simultaneously imagining herself staring into them under greatly different circumstances.
The door to the shop remained closed however; no tinkling of the bell to herald Mist’s arrival to the coffee shop, and the subsequent arrival of a swarm of butterflies into Aurora’s stomach. For the umpteenth time that day, Aurora squinted out the window to the record store opposite. The lights were still off, the sign still reading closed. Where was she?
Aurora had worked in the coffee shop for several years now. She had applied when she first moved to town as a broke student struggling to pay rent, and had loved every second of it. The coffee shop, it turned out, was the beating heart of this rural town: a social hub for almost all the denizens both ghoul and human. She had taken great delight in getting to know her new community and neighbours, and beginning to recognize people outside of the coffee-scented air of the café.
From her connections at the shop, Aurora had learned about the existence of the dark church, and in particular its close community of ghouls. She had found many of her new friends here, and even her new home. Aurora had got talking with two lunchtime regulars she recognized from the church: one the owner of the hardware store down the street, the other his husband joining him in town for lunch. She had quickly learned that they farmed the fields east of town, and when Aurora had mentioned in passing that she was looking for a place to stay over the summer semester break to keep working, they had offered their spare room. They were looking for a lodger, anyway.
Another regular was Zephyr: church organist, GP surgery receptionist, and one of the first people Aurora connected with in town. They always came in during the afternoon slump, and happily tried the newest and strangest flavours of tea the shop had ordered. Aurora would scribble notes on their thorough yet honest reviews, before they left with an extra-large, extra-strong black coffee for Omega, the surgery’s GP.
It was through Zephyr that Aurora had learned of their lodger Mist, who had recently opened a record store directly opposite the coffee shop. Mist was cool. Seriously, effortlessly, cool. Throughout the weeks that she had started coming to the coffee shop at Zephyr’s suggestion, her visits had become longer more regular. At one point, after Aurora brought over her third drink of the morning, her curiosity had got the better of her, and she had asked Mist if she actually sold any records, seeing as she spent more time in the café than her own shop.
It turned out that Mist had not only been an art student at Aurora’s college several years previously, but had also taken several courses in online business and marketing. She made most of her sales from her website, explaining how her shop kept running with seemingly few customers. Aurora thought she was amazing: smart, arty, stylish, cool... She felt like a schoolgirl with a crush on the homecoming queen. Mountain and Swiss thought this was adorable and frequently teased her about it, reminiscing on their own tentative courtship many years previously.
Mist had started bringing her laptop to the café, sitting by the window to keep half an eye on her own shopfront for customers while being plied with coffees and “free” cakes. She had quickly realized that no café had that good of a loyalty scheme, and that Aurora was instead buying them with her tip money. Secretly, she had started keeping track of what Aurora was spending on her, the notes tucked into the tip jar at the end of each day always covering the pastries, and then some.
As the frequency of Mist’s visits increased, Aurora had become deeply attuned to her presence. Mist was a welcome sight in her window armchair, a source of charming smiles and words which made her heart flutter. And so, on this day in the middle of a cold February week, Aurora had felt Mist’s absence before she consciously noticed it. All day, she had been distracted; one eye on the door or the conspicuously dark record store opposite.
She was so distracted, in fact, that Zephyr had cottoned onto it immediately when they entered for their afternoon break. They caught her eyes flickering to the empty shopfront opposite three separate times while ordering.
“Missing Mist today?” Zephyr asked kindly. Aurora blushed deeply; was it that obvious? “She’s at home sick today, she’s feeling pretty under the weather.”
Aurora’s concern must have shown on her face, and she started pressing herbal teas and cake upon Zephyr to bring to her.
“You could bring them yourself, if you want?” Zephyr smiled warmly: young love was such a precious thing. “She’s not contagious, Omega took a look at her this morning. She just needs some rest and TLC.”
Aurora nodded earnestly, not trying to hide how keen she was.
“You could meet us at the surgery after you close here? I can give you a lift once the Omega sees his last patient.”
“Thank you Zeph, that would be lovey. I’ll meet you there–”
Aurora’s eyes instinctively flickered to the door again as the bell chimed the arrival of a customer. She waved Zephyr and their good-natured smile goodbye, heading back behind the counter.
Before Aurora cashed out and locked up, she also gathered a selection of coffee beans and teas to bring for Omega and Zephyr. She closed the door the minute the clock hit six pm, and resisted the urge to run down the road to the Doctor’s surgery. They were a ten minute walk away at best, and Omega’s last appointment was at quarter-to-seven.
She decided to make a quick detour past the small grocery store. Tea and pastries were fine, but nothing beats the winter lurgy like hot soup. And crackers. Oh, and maybe chocolate, Aurora thought, throwing everything she could think of into her basket. At least with Mist living with a doctor, she would be well taken care of with painkillers and cold medication.
Her bag weighing heavily on her shoulder, she greeted Zephyr as she got to the surgery, perching on a chair in the waiting room while Omega finished seeing his last patient. Her feet swing nervously beneath her.
Aurora sat in the leather backseat of the silver saloon car, as Omega drove back to their house in the suburbs. As they pulled off the road, she saw Mist’s familiar ice-blue bicycle leaned against the side wall of the garage.
“Let me know when you want to go home, I can drive you back.” Zephyr offered, before directing Aurora to Mist’s room at the top of the stairs. She knocked shyly, it was too late to be scared of overstepping now.
“C’m’ in!” a croaky voice called from inside. Aurora gently opened the door, smiling cautiously at Mist and offering a small wave.
“Rory?” Mist’s eyes were rimmed with red, matching the colour of her nose, but they seemed to light up as the smaller ghoulette hovered in the doorway. “What’re you doing here?”
“Oh you poor thing!” Aurora cooed, dodging the question of why Mist’s casual workplace acquaintance was suddenly knocking on her bedroom door. Mist really did look terrible; her face was tired and haggard and her skin even paler than usual. “Can I come in?”
“’F course.” Mist sniffed, hauling herself upright in bed.
“I’ve brought you cake, and tea, and you’re not going to sneak money into my tip jar for once,” Aurora chattered nervously. “Can I run you a bath? Or fluff your pillows? Are you hungry, I brought soup?”
Mist smiled weakly at Aurora’s enthusiasm, a little overwhelmed at the small ghoulette’s whirlwind of fervent hospitality.
“A bath would be nice, this cold’s making me feel disgusting. So would some soup, I haven’t eaten since yesterday night…”
“A bath is is then!” chirped Aurora, “And I’ve got tomato, chicken noodle, or vegetable broth?”
“Tomato, please.” Mist rubbed at her red-raw nose with a tissue. “Zeph could do all this y’know? Or Meg. Did Zephy drag you here?” Conniving scoundrel, Mist thought to herself, anything to win that silly bet with Omega.
“I wanted to.” Aurora shrugged, trying to conceal just how eager she’d been to visit, “Zephyr just drove me.”
Mist struggled to pull herself more upright and swing her feet out of bed, and Aurora made a move to assist her. As she did so, she looked down at the armful of goodies she was still clutching, before whirling around to find somewhere to put them. Mist’s room wasn’t at all how Aurora had imagined: every available surface seemed to be covered in clutter and trinkets, the opposite of the cool, minimalist personality she exuded. The walls were plastered with artwork, lending everything a warm and cosy feeling. Aurora eventually made space on the desk, moving a few mugs – some with pencils in, some with leftover tea – and stacking the assortment of sketchbooks into a rough pile.
While Mist sat on the edge of the bed, waiting for the dizziness in her head to abate, Aurora headed into the en-suite and turned on the taps to warm up and begin to fill the bath. She looked around at the bottles on the windowsill, and poured in some blue bubble bath alongside the stream from the taps. Ocean Breeze, whatever that was meant to smell like.
“Thanks, ‘Ror,” rasped Mist, as she leaned against the doorframe, clean pyjamas in hand, “I can take it from here, unless you want to stay?” The exaggerated wink as she spoke told Aurora that she was only joking, and that despite Aurora secretly longing for more, this was just Mist’s normal flirtatious banter. At least she was feeling well enough for her usual wit to come through.
Aurora closed the door behind her as she left, and hovered in the bedroom until the taps turned off and the splashing sounds of Mist getting into the bathtub safely and without falling had quietened down. She grabbed some of her care package from the stash on the desk and headed back downstairs to make some tea and heat the soup.
Entering the kitchen, she found Zephyr at the table with a mug of the tea she gave them, grinning like a Cheshire cat. Omega paused where he was slicing vegetables and directed her to the kettle and microwave, grabbing a bowl and mug for her too. Aurora hovered awkwardly as she waited for the various liquids to heat, aware of Zephyr’s eyes burning a hole in her back the whole time. Out of the corner of her eye, she even thought she saw them making a gesture at Omega, like rubbing cash between their fingers and thumb. She put the bowl of soup and mug of tea onto a small tray Omega also presented, adding a few napkins and a spoon, before escaping back upstairs.
Balancing the tray in one hand, she knocked on the bedroom door again, entering when she got no response. The gentle sloshing sounds of water told her that Mist was still enjoying her soak, so she set the tray down on the desk and took a seat.
“I’m back!” she gently called at the bathroom door, “Let me know if you need anything else!” Mist hummed in acknowledgement.
Aurora took a look around the room while she waited, admiring the mishmash of colours and styles. Each item so clearly told a story, she wished she could ask about every single one. A small photo on the bookshelf made her smile: a younger Mist, probably round Aurora’s current age, was dressed in dungarees and pulling an uncharacteristically silly face at the camera from her seat atop a hay bale. A handsome dark-haired ghoul she recognised as the previous youth pastor Ifrit leaned against it, while Mountain and Swiss stood to one side, arms loosely around each other’s waists. Aurora couldn’t help the pang of jealousy she felt looking at the picture. Even though she knew they had only ever been friends, she was reminded that Mist had lived a life before she moved here, that there was no way she would ever fall for her young barista with a silly crush.
Abruptly, Aurora stood up and walked to the bed to straighten the duvet and fluff the pillows, perhaps with a little more force than was necessary. As she was tucking the foot of the blankets back in, Mist finally emerged from the bathroom in a cloud of fresh, ocean-scented steam. She looked to have more colour in her cheeks already, the worst of the pallid complexion she had worn before now gone.
“Feel better for that?” asked Aurora, smoothing the duvet with a final flourish, and moving out of Mist’s way.
“Much, thanks Rory,” Mist climbed back into bed, sighing as she sat up against Aurora’s carefully arranged stack of pillows. Once she was settled, Aurora brought over the tray, moving the mug to her bedside table so it didn’t spill. She tried not to stare too intently as Mist ate, smothering the protective fire that burned in her belly at seeing her devour the soup.
Instead, Aurora distracted herself by chattering at Mist about the daily gossip from the street. How Mrs Bloom from the flower shop had come in half an hour earlier than usual, coinciding with Mr Phipps from the jewellery boutique, and did this mean the elderly shopkeepers were finally getting together or not? And the teenager with the purple hair had been back to remove her Missing flyer from the noticeboard, as her pet cat had just been hiding in her neighbour’s garden shed the whole time, much to everyone’s relief.
As Aurora nattered away, she took Mist’s tray back to the desk once when she finished the soup and moved onto the tea, before lying back down under the covers. Aurora continued quietly recounting the day’s events until Mist’s breathing gradually slowed and evened out. Asleep. Aurora silently returned the empty mug to the tray, before grabbing a pencil and a scrap of paper to leave Mist a note in case she woke up wondering where her visitor had gone. She debated for a few seconds, before finally scribbling her mobile number on the bottom of the paper. Given how much time they spent together during the day, it was strange they hadn’t exchanged them yet, right?
She propped the note up on the bedside table and, in a moment of impulsivity, kissed two of her fingers before pressing them into the pillow, feeling Mist’s cool breath curl around them. Aurora shook her head, and grabbed the empty tray to leave before she made any more reckless confessions.
Zephyr drove her home in a comfortable, yet knowing, silence. Aurora felt slightly like she was the punchline to some joke she wasn’t aware of, but tried to think nothing of it. Surely spending your evening taking care of your favourite regular customer who might also be your friend but also might not be wasn’t that weird?
Aurora thanked Zephyr for the lift, choosing to slink off to her room as Swiss immediately invited them inside with promises of a fresh jar of honey from his bees. As she settled down for bed herself, mind still racing over the events of the day, her phone buzzed. Aurora felt her heart skip a beat as she read the message: Hi, it’s Mist. Thanks again for coming today, I’ll have to repay the favour sometime. xx

A bit behind schedule, but I've finally completed all the prompts, with my goal of writing 1k+ words for each! A final round of appreciation goes to @jesusbutbetterrr for putting this all together!!! 👏👏👏
It's been really fun to have prompts to work around, and personally I feel like my writing (and more importantly, my love for the ghoulettes!) has improved throughout these little ficlets 🖤

It was the final ritual of the tour. The exhaustion backstage was palpable, yet all the ghouls and their Papa were determined to give the best performance they could. No one liked to say anything, but they all expected this would be Copia's last performance before his retirement.
In their dressing room, the three ghoulettes were having their usual pre-show huddle. This was a tradition that they had started back when there was only the two air ghoulettes, Cirrus and Cumulus, and Aurora felt honoured to be included.
“Just before we go on stage,” Cirrus started, “I wanted to tell you how proud we are of you Rory, you've done so well Sweetheart!”
“You're a natural on stage Darling,” Cumulus added, gently bumping their still unglamoured horns together. “A real rock ‘n’ roll princess!”
Aurora blushed deeply, as their huddle turned into a crushing hug.
“I love you guys,” she mumbled into the fabric of Cirrus's waistcoat, pressed against her face.
She had been so nervous about tour, worried that she wouldn't live up to Sunshine's legacy, worried the other ghoulettes and even the crowd would resent her replacement, and yet every aspect of the tour had gone better than she expected. Aurora had never known joy like that she felt when she stood on her little platform, shaking her tambourine like she was born to be there. Well, she supposed, I sort of was, given that I was summoned specifically to be a band ghoul.
Her bond with her new packmates was stronger than ever, and her close friendship with Swiss was an unexpected bonus that she wouldn't trade for the world. She caught his eye as they filed onto their opposite podiums behind the curtain, the roar of anticipation from the excited crowd almost deafening. They shared a smile, and he blew her a kiss with a smirk, mouthing the words good luck at her.
Aurora made sure to absorb every moment of the ritual, every shout from the congregation, every antic between her packmates, every word on the handmade signs hung over the barrier. Everyone: the ghouls, Papa, even some minor Clergy who had joined them for the LA rituals; had reassured her that her position topside would be unchanged by the tour ending. Still, she performed like it was her last night on Earth, determined to make the memories last her long, infernal lifetime.
As they lined up to take their final bows, panting with exertion and adrenaline, Aurora found herself sandwiched between Cirrus and Cumulus. They squeezed her hands so tightly it almost hurt, and Aurora squeezed back, realising they were also trying to hold onto this moment with every fibre of their beings.
The time between leaving the stage for the last time and arriving back at the Abbey seemed to go by in a blur. Before Aurora knew it, their bus was taking the final turn onto the winding driveway that led to the church they called home. She hadn't even had time to worry about how the pack's dynamic might change, now they were reunited with the rest of them. She especially hadn't had a chance to think about what this time away had meant for her budding relationship with Mist.
Mist hadn't been there to wave them off; she had said she didn't want to intrude on pack business. They had kept in contact throughout the tour, of course, but it had been weeks since she had seen her in person. What if Mist wasn't as interested in her anymore now she wasn't the shiny new ghoul? What if–
The bus lurched to a final halt outside the rear entrance to the Abbey. There on the steps were a small welcoming committee: front and centre were Aether and Sunny, vibrating with excitement and both wearing grins so wide it must've ached; behind them were a selection of bored-looking Abbey ghouls tasked with unloading the bus and equipment truck; and off to the side, stood Mist.
Aurora leapt to her feet and joined the rest of the ghouls who were swarming the door to the bus, waiting for it to hiss open. The first to escape the developing crush were Cirrus and Cumulus, who bolted for Sunshine, tackling her in a hug. Dewdrop wasn't far behind, colliding with Aether so hard he stumbled backwards. The rest of the ghouls burst from the bus joining in the emotional reunion. Aurora jumped down lightly, beelining for Mist. She stopped short however, not sure what response Mist would expect from her.
She walked the final few paces, smiling shyly at the ghoulette before her.
“H-hi,” she stuttered out, before Mist closed the distance between them, sweeping her off her feet and spinning them in a circle.
“Welcome back, Rory” she cooed in her ear, words only meant for Aurora's ears, “I missed you.”
Aurora threw her arms over her shoulders in delight; things hadn't changed so much then.
A wolf whistle from Cumulus interrupted their moment of peace amist the chaos surrounding them. Aurora giggled, and looked over to the three ghoulettes to see an indistinguishable pile of cuddling limbs, Sunny only visible by her mop of strawberry-blonde curls. Near them, Aether had been mobbed by the rest of the ghouls, Dew having climbed him like a tree to rub his cheeks over his hair, scenting him like a cat.
Mist leaned in closer, her lips brushing the shell of Aurora's ear.
"Want to get out of here?”
“Please.”
"Go say hi to your pack, take as long as you need, I'll wait for you.”
Aurora jogged lightly over to the ghoulette group hug, and nuzzled in to reach Sunshine.
"How've you been, Sunny?”
“Better now you're all back. I'm so proud of you Starshine, you did so well out there!”
Aurora purred at her, giving her a peck on the cheek before wriggling free again. She tossed a sheepish smile and wave at Aether, who was in no state to break free right now. She could find him later.
Looking over, Aurora saw Mist softly smiling at her, holding out her hand in offering. Aurora gleefully grabbed it, allowing herself to be pulled after Mist as she took off running in the direction of the lake.
"Now, where were we?” Mist said, breathless and laughing, once the pair were finally stood in their spot on the dock.
“I believe I was about to tell you how much I missed you...” Aurora smiled, before leaning up on her tiptoes to press a kiss to Mist's soft lips.

Ghoulette Appreciation Week 11
Week 11: Caught in the rain & Long distance relationships
Right, I'm actually back now! And I've finally completed all the Ghoulette Appreciation weeks prompts!
Aurora misses Mist while she's away on tour. The rain reminds her of their full moon nights together at the lake.

It had been several weeks since the band ghouls had left on tour, and Aurora was missing Mist something terrible. Swiss had been trying his best to keep her company, the pair quickly becoming good friends over the course of the tour, but watching his budding relationship with Phantom grow had made Aurora miss her more than ever. Cirrus and Cumulus had tried their best too, but Aurora knew they were also missing Sunshine, and wanted to give them space without her always tagging along as a third wheel.
After another ritual ended, once the grease paint had been washed off and the screams of the fans had gone quiet, the ghouls sleepily made their way to the bus. Aurora felt a small tug from her water element connection as she left the concert venue. Looking up, a full moon hung low in the sky above, mostly obscured by dark clouds. Rain had been the first ghoul to leave. He had made a beeline for the bus, keen to get back to the hotel as soon as possible to try and sleep through it’s pull. They were so far from water here, the only river a brown and polluted trickle. He wouldn’t find peace until he was back at the Abbey with the lake and all it’s magic.
Aurora couldn’t wait to be back there either: she adored spending full moon nights with the water ghouls down at the lake, perched on the end of the dock with her feet in the water as she watched Mist frolic around. Mist. Aurora missed her so much; the pang of longing for her hurt far worse than any tidal pull.
She stared up at the sky above her head, and the moon that was now beginning to emerge. Briefly, it broke through a small gap in the swirling clouds and Aurora wondered if Mist was also looking at the same moon in that moment. She wondered if Mist would be at their usual end of the lake, in the shallow waters around the dock. It was just deep enough there for her to launch herself out of the water like a dolphin, splashing Aurora and demanding applause for her tricks, while still being close enough that even in the moonlight Aurora could make out where she was underwater from the faint ripples on the surface. Or would she be further out, far away from the Abbey’s human additions to the lake, in the unfathomably deep waters where leviathans were rumoured to lurk. That was where the water ghouls recharged their power the fastest, and Aurora felt a pang of guilt that Mist might stay away from there just for her.
Sighing, Aurora stepped onto the bus. The journey to the hotel was not a long one, yet it felt like it lasted hours as she sat by herself behind the driver. She was the first off when the doors finally hissed open. She stepped lightly down, jumping to the side to allow Rain to barrel past her, his face turned into his collar away from the direction of the moon. Dew followed behind at a more human pace, clutching both of their overnight bags. The others groggily followed.
The moon was completely obscured behind clouds again, nothing but a diffuse glow telling of its presence, but she felt it just as strongly. With a low rumble, the clouds began to empty their contents onto the ghouls assembled below, sending them scattering towards the hotel doors as fast as possible. Aurora gasped at the sudden shock of the cold, but remained where she stood and tilted her face up into the downpour. If she closed her eyes, she could imagine just for a second that it was Mist splashing her with water from the lake. The caress of the cold raindrops felt like the shadow of an embrace from her beloved water ghoulette, so many miles away.
Ignoring the shouts from the hotel doors beckoning her to coming inside, Aurora wandered in the direction of the attached gardens. The raindrops seemed to dance ahead of her on the concrete path, the smell of petrichor coming up from the ground pulling her forward like a magic spell. She drifted along the pathways, the feeling of water gradually seeping into her canvas shoes hardly bothering her. Running her fingers delicately over the waxy leaves of a shrub, they reminded her of Mist’s smooth scales, the water slowly dripping off the plant in the same unhurried manner.
She followed her instincts, drifting through the small garden until she reached the centre. A small pond awaited her there, the surface churned up by the rain reflecting the dim glow of the moon into a thousand smaller pieces. Aurora gingerly perched on the low wall surrounding it, kicking off her sodden shoes to dip her toes into the water. She closed her eyes again and pictured herself back on the dock at the lake. Mist would be just in front of her, her head popping up out of the water to shoot her a mischievous grin, gills flaring, before disappearing as quickly as she had appeared with a sharp flick of her tail. Aurora would scan the water, searching for signs of her lurking beneath the surface, waiting to be found.
When Aurora opened her eyes to the pond again, she could have sworn she saw a shape that looked like Mist withing the pond. Disappointed, she realised the shock of platinum hair and ice blue eyes were just tricks of the light from the reflected moon above. Sighing once more in frustration at her separation from the ghoulette she loved, Aurora stood up and cringed at the feeling of squeezing her wet feet into equally wet shoes. Hopefully they would be dry by the morning. If not, perhaps Cirrus could use her magical blow-dryer hands – Cumulus’s words, not hers – to make them wearable.
Squelching into the hotel lobby, she was met by the two air ghoulettes holding the overnight bag she had completely forgotten about. With caring smiles, full of sympathy for her separation from her long-distance mate and containing love of their own, they gently led a now-shivering Aurora upstairs with promises of a warm bath. Perhaps they would add those eucalyptus salts that reminded her of a certain water ghoulette…
