The food came out shortly, and Desiree forgot all about her mission to uncover the saga of how we met. Sophia got up to her old tricks, telling wild tales, making us laugh. I don't know what comes over her in restaurants, but it's always a good time. Once we had our fill of noodles, and were teetering on the brink of a carb coma, we headed back to the rental and took a proper tour of the house. It had just about everything we needed, and many more things we didn't expect, like a small yoga studio and a private hot spring. We almost didn't need to leave the house.

Desi and I settled in the living room while Sophia unpacked.

"So, what do you think about Mt. Komorebi so far?" I asked.

"I think I like it, but... It's weird here."

"Nooo, don't say that. Things might be different, but that doesn't make them weird. Every place has its own style and culture, and they're all kinda cool in their own ways. Actually, we have a lot of cultures in our family."

Her eyes lit up again.

"We do??"

"Yep. My dad's family is from a place called Monte Vista. It's really far away. But it's very beautiful and looks a lot different from here and San Sequoia. Their culture is very serious about food and influenced a lot of what we eat, like pizza and pasta."

"Pizzaaaaa! What about Mommy?"

I groaned, not because I didn't want to share her story, but because it wasn't mine to tell and she wasn't around to decide whether it got told. But her history isn't her own anymore. That is the exact reason she wanted to have children in the first place. Desiree deserves to know how she got here and who played a part in it.

"Mommy has lots of cultures in her family, so she's extra cool."

"Oooh, like what??"

"Well, part of her family is from Sulani. That's an island, so they live on the beach."

"Ooooooh!!"

"Another part of her family is from El Selvadorada. That's the jungle."

"The jungle?!"

"Mmm hmm. And a very small part of her family is from another faraway place called Al Simhara. That's in the desert where the pyramids are."

"COOOOOOOOOOOL!"

I have no idea if she even knows what the pyramids are or why they're so cool, but her reactions are sending me! She has the cutest, most expressive face.

Sophia finally joined us, asking what all the excitement was about. Before I could answer, the kid gave a very loud, excitable response.

"Daddy said you're cool because you have the most cultures!"

"Oh," she said, chuckling nervously. "Is that right?"

"Let's go outside and watch the snow," she blurted.

"OKAY!"

Desi hopped up and ran outside. Sophia lit the fireplace to keep us warm since we didn't put on our coats.

"Isn't it pretty?" she asked.

"Yes, but it sounds funny," Desiree shouted.

Sophia laughed.

"Yeah...it kinda does. I like the way it sounds, though."

I silently agreed with both of them. It's weird when the snow is thick and really coming down because somehow it can absorb sound, making it eerily quiet outside. But it also has a hushed, serene quality to it that is calming. We stood there and listened for a moment before Sophia turned around and warmed her hands. Desiree watched her, shadowing everything she did. It was the cutest thing. Despite all the time she and I spend together, and despite how much she enjoys our time, it's good to know she still desires her mother and wants to be like her.

I had plans for tonight and was eager to get my vacation agenda started, so I cozied up to Sophia, whispering in her ear.

"You should have told me you were cold. I would have put the kid to bed early so we could light a fire upstairs."

She giggled.

"I mean...you could still do that."

"Say less."

I grabbed Desi and ushered her upstairs.

"Time for bed, Des!"

"But I'm not tired!"

"You will be. Trust me! We had a long journey today. It'll hit you very soon. Just close your eyes and think sleepy thoughts."

"But I don't have sleepy thoughts!"

Once you hear us, you'll wish you did.

"I need some water," she said.

"You're fine. Drinking water will make you get up and pee later." And then you might see some things.

"I want to stay up with you and Mommy," she whined.

"I know, hon. But you'll get to hang out with us all day for three straight days. That's what's so cool about vacation."

"You promise?"

"Cross my heart!"

"Okay."

She changed her clothes and slid under the covers. I tucked her in and gave her a goodnight kiss.

"Sweet dreams for our sweet potato."

She closed her eyes and was down for the count within minutes, just like I said.

I all but ran next door to our room and tore off my clothes. But to my surprise, Sophia had found another activity to enjoy.

"Luca, this is so nice! I've never done it half naked by a fire before."

Hopefully she wouldn't enjoy it for too much longer. My time was growing short. You got to strike while the iron is hot; ya know? But we are on vacation, and like I just told Desi, we're gonna have three whole days of togetherness. We don't have to burn a hole in the mattress tonight. Besides, Sophia does so much for our family, never complaining or making excuses. She deserves to relax, so I sat patiently and admired her from a distance...

But then I got a very selfish idea, heh. I never got a chance to give her that full body massage, and it's high time she sees exactly what these hands can do. First, I'll start innocently with her hands. Then, I'll hit her neck and shoulders, like last time. I'll move down her back real slow, and when I start squeezing that ass, she will be putty in my hands. It's about to go DOWN!

Huh. So… Even at a superhero convention, she just can't catch a break?

Of course she can't. Two minutes before the "Learning Is Fun!" panel is supposed to start, Kid Math yanks WordGirl from the restroom doorway. He really jerks her too, almost throwing her spine against the water fountains with all the super strength in his 16-year-old body. Her elbow slams the fake white bricks. "Hey!" she yelps. Huggy squeaks from his position on the younger hero's arm and smacks the back of his head. Gently. Sort of.

Kid Math doesn't hesitate. He grabs her shoulders and shakes her back and forth hard enough to rattle her eyes around in her sockets. "Hey," he blurts, STILL shaking her. The word explodes in a bright yellow burst in her head (courtesy of eternal synesthesia). "Have you seen Super Why? He's been AWOL all day. Huggy and I even flew around to check all the flypaper strips, but there's no sign of him. He's going to be late!"

Late is one of Kid Math's favorite words. It's spiky and violet in her brain like a train caboose at the end of the rainbow. If WordGirl could play a reel of all the times her friend has called her phone, kicked in a door, interrupted date night, or slammed his hands down on a counter to ramble on about how if they don't leave in "exactly 4.218 minutes" then there will be heck to answer for, she'd love to. Well… "Love" is a strong word. And actually, watching a montage of his fretting sounds decidedly awful. That's not the point.

"What?"

"No one can find Super Why," Kid Math repeats, fussing with the collar of her cape. His gloved hands are rough, unintentionally aggressive. He's six inches taller than her these days (and his curls add another six inches on top of that). His icy breath smells like chalky candy necklace powder. WordGirl slaps his fingers away. Kid Math floats back, looking queasy. His brows form a carat on his forehead. "Do you think he's hurt?"

"I think I need a few seconds of personal space," she mutters. It's almost too bad that she put her gloves back on after washing her hands. She'd like to flick a bit of water at him. It might give him goosebumps. He deserves it.

Kid Math backs even farther away. Huggy tacks on another statement, gesturing across the convention center with a wave of his arm. Apparently, they've both been looking for Super Why for the last 15 minutes. In addition to the flypaper strips, they've also checked the bug zapper by the main entrance and did a search on ground level for mouse traps. No sign of the tiny superhero hanging out around those hot party spots either. Which is for the best, obviously, but… What's she going to do about this?

Focus. Super Why is missing…

WordGirl presses one hand to her temple, still centering herself after that dizzy shaking spell. It's a bad day for headaches. The lights and noises of the convention center have been pretty brutal on her super-hearing so far. Both she and Kid Math have been checking in with each other every hour, making sure they're drinking water and taking regular quiet breaks outside. She had lunch with TJ at a pizza place down the street. WordGirl tries to pull up the memory of the big glass windows, brick interior, and the scent of tomato sauce and garlic powder in the air. The alfredo pizza with the spinach mixed into the sauce? It's amazing.

Okay. So… No one's sure where Super Why went? Not that unusual; the convention center's pretty crowded and he's easy to overlook. There are a thousand reasons why he could be running behind, from waiting in line for somebody's autograph to struggling to push the button on a water fountain. Being his size can't be easy. He also doesn't have super speed. Maybe it takes him a while to get from one place to another.

"He's late," Kid Math says, drawing close again. Another violet blossom blooms in her mind's eye, back to back with the green circle that represents he in her brain. He's late, he's late, he's late…

Right. Also, Super Why could totally be at risk of getting crushed under someone's foot, but WordGirl doesn't point that out. She, um, doesn't really know Super Why that well and he'd probably get offended if either of them imply he can't take care of himself even at age 18, but… it is pretty weird that nobody's seen him. A flicker of anxiety shoots up her throat. How well has their non-invincible, 3-inch-tall (friend? associate?) been doing two days into the superhero convention without a proper bodyguard?

But she doesn't bring that up. "Calm down, calm down," she says instead. She pries Kid Math's gloved fingers from her arms, firmly pushing his shaking hands down by his sides. He's got hot sweat droplets dripping down his forehead. Kid Math always smells like mangoes and apricots now. Apparently, that scent's natural for Hexagonian sweat after puberty. She's more jealous than she'll ever let on. It's one of the most unfair aspects of his home planet over hers, second only to the fact that Rex grew up next door to a real, actual unicorn ranch. Garbage. Absolute atrocity.

WordGirl lets go of his wrists, drawing in a calming breath. "Hey. Super Why knows not to get too close to the floor. He's probably just in the bathroom, like I was. Let's take a loop around."

Huggy nods, situating himself a bit more comfortably on Kid Math's back. "Okay," says Kid Math, but his shaky answer doesn't peel the frown from his face. That tentative word is sparking and blue. He twists his hands, wrinkling his gloves as though making tiny snowballs. "But I can't find him, and everyone's waiting for us onstage. We're going to be late."

There are worse fates than being late. For example, despite Huggy's search check, Super Why could be inches from touching another bug zapper. He gets way too much enjoyment out of coasting along their edges, playing with cruel fate and bright blue sparks. No joke, but yesterday her heart dropped like a guillotine every time she heard him whoop and spiral. He'll definitely get his hair fried one day if he keeps that up, and he's cheeky enough that it probably won't stop him.

As we approach World Dream Day on September 25, 2024, we are thinking of the importance of dreams in shaping the world we live in and the spaces we design. This year’s theme, Dreams for the Future, resonates deeply with our team at Dean Larkin Design, as we’ve always believed that architecture is more than just constructing buildings; we are building dreams. Our mission has been to turn our clients’ visions into reality, creating spaces with inspiring architectural designs that reflect their personal styles and ways of life.

Whether we are designing a family home where memories will be made or luxury vacation homes that transport guests into a world of relaxation and wonder, each project we undertake is a testament to the power of dreams.

Designing Dreams

Over the years, we’ve had the honor of working on projects that go beyond mere structure and function. One of our favorites was the transformation of a Malibu beach house into a personal retreat for a client so they could feel like they were on a permanent vacation. Like a dream, the client could feel like they were escaping to a seaside resort every time they walked in the door. We designed expansive terraces that open directly to the ocean, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. The result? A space that feels like a luxury getaway every day of the year.

Another dream-worthy project is the Latimer project. This incredible home was built for clients who wanted an oasis that would also accommodate their active empty-nester lifestyle. So we designed their Rustic Canyon home with unique luxury features. You know how we work; we love to incorporate water and natural elements that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor! For example, one partner wanted a lap pool while the other emphatically did not. So we created a pool with a “lake” feel- and the owner could jump into his lap pool right from the master bedroom. This “lake” included a baja shelf, spa, of course the lap pool and a loggia “island.” Visitors could cross stepping pads to get to the glass entryway. We wanted to create a dream come true with this home and the owners were very happy with the result. In addition, this particular property has been featured on California Homes and was up for a Red Award last year.

Bringing Dream Vacations to Life with Architectural Design

One area that we have been excited about recently is the concept of dream vacation rentals—spaces designed to offer not just comfort, but an experience that feels otherworldly. We recently came across an article from Condé Nast Traveler about architectural masterpieces you can rent for your next vacation, and we couldn’t help but feel a connection to this idea. We have enjoyed being part of projects that will allow guests to escape to a world where design meets nature. One example is our work in Joshua Tree, where we have designed stunning small homes that are slated to become luxury Airbnb rentals that provide a unique blend of modern design and natural beauty. These rentals will allow people to connect with the beautiful landscape of the desert while indulging in the comforts of a bespoke architectural masterpiece.

One of these projects, the Faith Project, is nearing completion. The shape is uniquely inspired by the Yucca Moth and the need to protect the surrounding Joshua Trees. One of the things we are known to do is orient a home to take advantage of whatever the best views are and we designed the house to open to the hills so occupants could enjoy stunning views when the sun goes down. The home has clean lines, a private pool and unique windows and skylights that allow the natural sunlight to fill the home with brightness. For us, design is never just about creating a place to stay; we want to create a sanctuary where people can come to dream, and enjoy their surroundings.
