I am still pissed at this video insinuating that there's little to not interesting female characters in the whole medium of anime and manga so I made this list. I tried to make the less well known at the top of it.
There's different experience, setting and even representation. Comedy, tragedy, melancholy, adventure, action, yuri and even asexuality... i tried to put as much as diversity in the genre too.
Don't forget to check the trigger warnings for theses before to start them.
If you want to do something similar, use this link.
PS some I forgot :
Gundam Witch

I'm in love with the villainess (read the manga) :

You also have the manga Miss Kiryuu doesn't know love with a aroace mangaka fed up with amatonormativity who ironically found herself drawing a harem manga while actually knowing nothing about romance.
She try to understand it but just find herself more confused by it.
There's also a love triangle but no worry she won't change her mind and end with ones of the guys.
October 22-28 is Ace Week 2023, so I’d like to give a spotlight to some manga I have enjoyed that have also touched on asexuality.
I Want To Be A Wall by Honami Shirono
A 3 volume Josei manga about the lavender marriage between Gakurouta, a closeted gay man who pines for his childhood friend, and Yuriko, an aromantic, asexual BL fangirl.
She Loves To Cook, and She Loves To Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki
An ongoing yuri Josei manga with a TV adaptation about two women who bond over food. The series recently introduced Yako, an asexual lesbian, and it’s possible that protagonist Nomoto may be on the ace spectrum as well.
Is Love The Answer? by Uta Isaki
A single volume josei manga about Chika, a young college student who has always considered herself an “alien” because she has no desire for romance or physical intimacy, but finds community with people like herself.
Our Dreams At Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare by Yuhki Kamatani
A 4 volume Seinen manga about a closeted gay boy who gets to know the patrons of a drop-in center who all turn out to be part of the LGBTQ community. Someone-san might be considered a deuteragonist of the story.
I’d also like to mention two yuri manga I haven’t finished yet- I have only read the first volume of both- but because of what others have said I know they feature asexual characters!
Catch These Hands! (murata)
Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon (Shio Usui)

Miss Kiryuu Doesn't Know What Love Is is mainly about a woman who has never experienced romance trying to puzzle out relationships when she finds herself romantically pursued by two different men, and it's pretty interesting, but a part of me wishes the manga was entirely focused on her making a harem romcom she hates and falling into success Producers-style

"Surprise surprise. Perfect ties. Isn't that just fortunate? For everyone involved? You just love everyone? Well fine, fine, you want two files. You can have two files."
"Not like it bothers me at all. I've got better things to do than be handing out some pesky files. Gensokyo is blue and there's nothing I can do."
Urabe Tokifumi
(Faceclaim: Aesc the Savior/Tonelico from the Fate franchise)
Toki has been working at The Willow Shrine for almost as long as Kiki has. Officially he's meant to dress as an Onmyoji as part of the cafe dress code however ... the uniform just doesn't look right on him. For a time the owner had him dressing as a miko but he feels its a bit odd to expect a man to dress as a priestess. Instead he's mostly gotten away with just donning a kimono.
Kiki may be the postergirl of the shrine but Toki might just be the bigger draw. Friendly, pretty, and unafraid to go to lengths to charm customers. He's found that a cute smile and a bad tendency to flirt can do a lot to make new return customers.
He attends the same university as both Kiki and Hikari. Officially Toki is studying anthropology but his main interest lays in the study of folklore and myth. Stories of witchcraft and fantastical creatures particularly hold his attention. A set of encyclopedia and guidebooks on folklore were stuffed among his things when ripped away to Gensokyo. A fun activity he and Kiki like to do together is theorizing over the biological traits of mythical monsters.
Like Kiki, Toki's job calls upon him to entertain clients. He does not have the instrumental talent of his coworker but he does have a fairly alright singing voice. Serviceable enough to entertain customers during karaoke. He attempted to learn to play the koto but ... it really did not go well, so lets not think about that.
The Owner
(Face Claim: Orchid from Arknights)
Miss Kiryuu Yaeka (八恵花) is the somewhat strange owner of Kiryuu's aka The Willow Shrine. Its difficult to gauge her age from her appearance but, based on the anecdotes she shares with customers and employees alike, she's lived a storied life. What the others do know is that before Kiryuu's she was the mama of a bar somewhere else in Sapporo and that before this she spent a long time traveling Japan.
She owns the land the shrine was on herself. According to Miss Kiryuu's claim she also planted the willow trees around it herself but this is probably a joke given the shrine cafe hasn't been around long enough for them to grow. She's a bit cagey as to where she got the money to pay for an entire fake shrine. Kiki believes she's some form of rich heiress, Hikari thinks its a criminal front, Toki believes it was probably good investments.
You may expect someone that builds a cafe themed around a traditional faith and insists her employees entertain with traditional Japanese instruments to be traditionalist. Instead she seems to have a deep interest in foreign culture. With an entire in both foreign holidays and a collection of foreign films stored within her back
Miss Kiryuu was away on a business trip when the shrine disappeared. Meaning she is presently separated from her main source of revenue. How unfortunate.

Katie Watches Utena - "Take Care, Miss Nanami!"
It's nice to come back to a different story after another break, this time to see "Barbie"!
...and Nanami appears out of the air like a ghost or assassin...
Whether I like the girl or not, no one deserves to be followed and nearly fall into traffic. Did this person know they were scaring Nanami so badly?
"You shouldn't read so many detective novels" - ok, OUCH. Nanami may be flighty and mean, but Touga, my dude, that's your little sister! She's legitimately scared!
I should have known that nasty girls like Nanami's crew would sell her out.
In all seriousness, getting clocked with a baseball like that would SUCK. I'm amazed Nanami is up and walking.
There has to be some kind of trick here. Even if Anthy were engaged to Touga, and she isn't, is she truly capable of murder?
Ok, that makes a lot more sense to be talking about garden vermin.
.....ok, why the fuck is there a horse at this school? Are they that fancy that they have a polo team?
A new prince? Now that *is* a wrinkle - and he seems to be of the same school of thought as Utena that princeliness comes from action, not noble blood. Is he the same one who had been following her?
NANAMI NO! What is it with the Kiryuus and going after younger partners??
That curry sounds awful!
Ok, so the *emotional* incest has at least been confirmed...yuck.
I'm enjoying Utena and Miki's partnership - but where's my girl Wakaba been?
Oh FUCK OFF, Saionji. You of all people have no place to talk about what love is.
Never mind, I hate Nanami again. Even a boyfriend her age shouldn't have to put up with this treatment! Utena doesn't even really date and she knows this!
Tsuwabuki looks even younger during the bull incident - all of six years old?
...you little monster! What kind of bullshit is that!? This is how serial killers form, I swear!
I am willing to accept Nanami appearing out of thin air with the whole recording set just for that look of bewilderment on Tsuwabuki's face.
Ah, Nanami, ever the pragmatist, even as she drags a boy away from a fistfight with a goddamn kangaroo.
Touga, always ready to make the saving play, I guess. And it seems Utena shares my suspicions about his sense of timing.

They don't justify it, they explain it, it's more that at the 10th volume, even with the communication and desire for both of them to understand each other he will still do something she's definitely not ok with (not against her but still)
And on that part even if everyone understood and tolerated him because of that, it'll be clear that it have gone too far.
It's just that before this volume there's still was moment where people do get that he basically don't want to be close to anyone so they take him as not wanting his boundaries crossed
We really get to how I have mixed feelings for this manga because frankly I hated these part too and I find it odd how everyone is so fine with that
I just think it's good to test yourself as if this trope can possibly be written in a way that make you think "I don't agree, he did terrible thing and I don't excuse it, but I understand why he does it and I want to see where it goes"
Honestly I don't read it for the romance because like. It's cute I guess and I love Hotaru so maybe it's because to me it's about relationships and the trauma caused by them (since Hotaru too is traumatized and it's another thing flung in your face in the 10th volume, not from Hananoi again) that I don't frame it as ideal relationship but just two people trying to have one
As for Hotaru being in the aroace spectrum, you need to read miss Kiryuu doesn't know love because it take this premise of the heroine not knowing love and really deliver on social subject such as amatornomativity, how women are force fed romance since forever and how it's not surprising that we end up associated to this...
Tbh I am more motivated about talking about it than a condition called love lol
I gotta put this somewhere because A Condition Called Love is now out and the episode game me the same bad vibes as the manga: I really don’t like the Male Leads of the current Shojo manga era. I couldn’t stand the Male Lead for A Sign of Affection last season either.
Hananoi love bombs Hotaru and I kept waiting for the manga to talk about how it’s bad and it just never happened. He corners a boy who has done nothing but be friendly to him and says “I only care about Hotaru stop talking to me.” That’s bad. And that was like 3 volumes in. How many chapters does it take before someone calls him out on it? I’ll never know because I checked out there.
I don’t mind flawed characters. But there’s gotta be some evidence that it’s wrong or it’s gonna be addressed and it never is. And it’s not that I don’t like Shojo any more because I’m still fully on board for Skip Beat and Yona of the Dawn and they’ve been stringing me along for a decade lol

Hello....Can I ask for your fav manga or anime recs that is non romance? Thx if you want to answer.
You are so right, at some point, I also kinda fed up with romance stories (espcially het ones).
Are you also excited that Ikoku Nikki got anime adaptation?
Funny thing is that my favorite mangas HAVE romance in them but it's just that I don't focus on it myself, so that the discussion about it revolve around romance make sense but the theme usually isn't only that...
Yeah it's about Orange
But for non romance or at least when the romance is really secondary :
Seirei no Moribito
Kemono no souja Erin
Miss Kiryuu doesn't know love
Is love the answer
I want to be a wall
(these three are about aroace)
Death Parade
Sweetness and lightning
Cells at work (I like wbc x rbc but it's not romantic)
Psycho Pass (same as the previous one)
Idolish7
Re:creators
Shiki
Ososan
Your Throne
According to my list it's already been more than I expected haha. I really need to get back to non romantic focused show, because they're definitely my favorites
I heard of Ikkoku Nikki! I FEEL that it's going to be one of my favorite, I just don't know if I should read the manga first? I think the same about Witch Hat Atelier
About het romance, the sad thing is how there's much more of them so the lack of originality is more apparent. The worst to me is how many otome isekai would be much better without them but you always have a duke of the north pushed in the story who will change the oh so smart heroine into a shy puddle
It's annoying

Sorry if I'm late for the ask game. Your top 5 manga, please?
I was surprised when I saw Fumi as one of your fav characters. Am I right to guess that 'Queen's Quality' is one of your top 5 manga?
Yes! You guessed right, anon!
For the top 5 manga I prioritize manga that didn't have an animated adaptation or when the anime isn't as good as the manga to me.
So, top 5 manga :
Queen's Quality
Orange
Shikimori san
Kenrantaru Grande Scene
Miss Kiryuu doesn't know love
I'll gladly post my top manwha too xD

Sometime I want to post about this page in miss Kiryuu doesn't know love where she explain that it's no wonder why women are obsessed by romance if it's all we are shown since we are little
Even so I watched Disney movies like everyone else. I never cared about the romantic part of it? Maybe because feeling inhuman due to your illness do that to you
