Nigel Farage never misses a chance to turn on immigrants, this time aiming his sights at legal immigration, suggesting that rather than boosting our economy legal immigrants actually cost the country money.

Is this true and does it really matter? 

For year ending June 2024 1.16 million visas were issued for work, study or family reasons, including dependents. (GOV.UK: Immigration system statistics, year ending June 2024.)  Of these 286,382 were work visas.

So, of the total number of immigrant visas issued, just over 25% of these were work related. This contradicts Farage’s claim that only “one in five legal migrants are working” but lets forgive the bad math for the moment  and burrow a little deeper into the figures.

Of the total number of legal immigrants for year ending June 2024, 446,000 were on overseas student visas. Students are here to study and therefore cannot be counted as not working. For Farage to include such a large proportion of legal migrants in his “not working” figures is misleading at best and a deliberate deceit at worst.

What is more, foreign students PAY for their university education and in so doing make a massive contribution to the UK economy.

 If we take overseas student numbers from the 1.16million visas issued we are left with 714,000 legal migrants who are here either to work or as dependents. Of these 286,382 had work visas, leaving 427,618 immigrants with no right to work or study. In short, 36.863% of the total number of visa issued. 

Again, the math shows  Farage as either bad with figures or a man bent on deceit.  36.8% of legal migrants not working is far short of Farage’s 80%. But lets look even deeper at the numbers.

The visas issued were for students, workers and dependents. As we have accounted for student and worker numbers it is fair to assume the remaining 36.8% of visas issued are for dependents, which is just over one third of all visas issued. Breaking the numbers down further we can see the ratio of worker visas to dependent  visas is 246,382: 427,618: or put more simply 1:1.7

In other words, on average, every migrant issued a work visa brings with them 1.7 dependents. This figure of 1.7 dependents is exactly the number of dependent children the average household in England and Wales supports. (Office of National Statistics: Average number of dependent children per family in England and Wale, 2020 and 2021) The galling truth for Farage is that the average legally working migrant, if they bring dependents with them, incurs no more cost on the British economy than the average English or Welsh worker with dependents. Even more damaging of Forages misinformation campaign is the fact that migrant men are more likely to be in work than UK born men, and therefore less likely to claim unemployment benefit.

Since you have an IDW2005 Optimus and Arcee reading list, do you have one for... all of IDW?

Yeah! I made one for a friend some time ago and polished it and uploaded it here. (I'm assuming this is about the 2009-2018 continuity and not IDW2)

The guide favors publishing order but it's organized by volume for a coherent reading experience. It also lists individual issues, so it works whether you adquired all the volumes or are reading chapter by chapter online or any combination. I tried to be clear about what is what and what's included in what, but if there's any confusion let me know.

IDW1 is divided in 3 "phases", in phase 3 there's a lot of crossovers with other Hasbro franchises known as the Hasbroverse. I included all the crossovers with Transformers, but not all the Hasbroverse series. I didn't include G.I. Joe volume 5 even though Skywarp joins the cast in it because if I did, I felt like I would have had to include all of G.I. Joe.

Now, and the rest is just me preaching so feel free to ignore, you don't have to read everything on this list. I am a completionist and I like doing this stuff, I also think it's good to know what actually happens bc most people here haven't read most of the continuity and there's a lot of misinformantion and silly discourse going around. But comics shouldn't feel like homework and I see a lot of people not making progress or giving up on the continuity bc they get tired of making themselves read slop.

More than meets the eye by James Roberts is Tumblr's darling, the one mostly everyone has read and talks about, so if you care about enganging with fandom that's the one you have to read. The Wreckers saga, Barber's exRID and the Winblade series by Scott sorta come second in that regard (Barber's stuff is actually my favorite). Aside from Wreckers and spotlight Kup, phase 1 is generally considered to be not very good, with phase 2 being where stuff starts getting good.

But maybe you will like the stuff in phase 1, I don't know. I'm not telling you what to skip, I don't know your priorities, that's why personalized guides like the OP and Arcee ones are for. What I'm telling you is that if you get bored of something, just go for the next thing. Or really just start by whichever series seems more interesting to you. If you must complete the reading, you can always do it after you're already hooked. And if anything is confusing bc you skipped something or for whatever reason you can always, always ask me about the lore.

This is not my usual type of post, but it is something that I believe is important and I feel that talking about something through a misunderstanding with dolls can be a chance to educate people in this community!

I am not a Twitter/X user (I hear the doll community is especially brutal on there) but I was sent these tweets. I mean absolutely no hate to the original poster of these tweets, these were sent to me cropped so I am unsure of who op is or if there is more to the story, so please forgive me if I have missed something.

Op is saying “oh…” because the doll is a wheelchair user, but on the box art the doll is seen standing.

I can see why this may be seen as a problem, and it’s likely that op is someone who thinks of wheelchair users as completely wheelchair bound, which many people do so I don’t blame them (if I saw this doll a few years ago even I may have been upset my her standing). But not every wheelchair user is completely unable to walk and/or stand, this is called being an ambulatory wheelchair user.

I do agree with op, I highly doubt that this shein/temu brand doll was trying to “represent” an ambulatory wheelchair user, this was likely a fluke that she happened to be drawn standing. But it is not necessarily a bad thing or an ableist action.

Many wheelchair users are ambulatory; whether that means they can only stand from their wheelchair to grab something high up, or they can go for a walk three days in a row before they flare up and have to rely on their mobility aids to get around. These individuals are still disabled and are still wheelchair users.

To be completely honest, I do not care that Defa Lucy is standing, I’m more curious about how she moves as she has no access to her wheels, nor a control panel? To me, that is a poor design choice, even if she is just a doll and can’t move the wheels on her own so there is no “practical use” of the access, it is a significantly more incorrect design choice than her just being drawn standing up. (Not that I think the brand cares about portraying this topic accurately in any way, however, I feel one is more realistic than the other, even if it is “just a doll.”)
