"Open to interpretation" does not mean you get to tell Destiel shippers how to see the canon, Karen

After the spntwit drama this week I think it matters to emphasize again how hard the antidestiel hatedom was going against how Jensen rolls when it comes to interpretation.

antidestiels continue to behave as if they believe "open to interpretation" means they themselves can dictate to other fans how to see the canon, and they call Destiel shippers and Misha "disgusting" just for speaking our viewpoints of the canon.

Destiel shippers give our take on the text and antis go "well you can't because JENSEN SAID--"

They very obviously do not listen to what Jensen says. Here is Jensen at Dencon 2021, where he pretty much clears the runway for fans to interpret however we please and his praise and appreciation for those readings: “This is the great thing about the show and I think the relationships and some of these characters is that they’re open for interpretation. If you find identity in a character because of whatever reason, fantastic! Great! If that encourages you to be a better person, or to love someone a little harder, to forgive someone for something, fantastic. That’s—that’s I think that’s one of the beautiful things about what we do is that we get to encourage people on a variety of levels.” -Jensen Ackles, DenCon October 2021

This is not the first time Jensen has conveyed his support for fan interpretation.

Yes we can and it's not that we need Jensen's--or anyone's permission--however it's just so heinous how severely antidestiels stomp all over Jensen's respectfulness and protection of fan readings and his appreciation of that, and their lying about how he rolls. They are making very negative insinuations of him, yet somehow everyone else in fandom is the problem but them.

It doesn't add up.

The phrasing should sound familiar.

Yes, that's right, he's used similar language to speak about Dean and Cas. And this is for a het ship.

"a kiss wasn't necessarily needed" "let's tiptoe for now" "fired it up in a way that made it not so sexual...two humans really, truly connecting. It wasn't just like, oh, let's rip each other's clothes off."

Put that next to "I don’t think lust is involved with the romanticism" "there's some people that might try to sexualize that" "it was two sentient beings essentially" (Dencon 2021, Vancon 2022)

Isn't that interesting. (Also isn't it interesting he called it "romanticism"?)

Jensen also said something somewhere about how he would like to do a romantic comedy so long as it involves killing zombies. He doesn't hate romance. It's just that he likes genre and action stuff. He's not against, whether it's queer or straight romances.

He's also said he'd like to do a rom-com slash western playing opposite Misha Collins.

Not telling Destiel shippers what to do, but along with antidestiel misinformation spread, the Destiel lane is justly notorious for flinging accusations at him and I think it's relevant that he speaks about a het ship using similar language, and it's relevant how supportive he is of queer readings.

one last thing, this is old, from Jensen's time on Days of our Lives, but he wasn't against playing a queer character.

They do, though, in a sense. Besides scheduling which Misha mentioned he also said “the timing didn’t quite work out” and that there were “various reasons” as well as being hopeful for either a season 2 or “beyond” for The Winchesters (all combined with mentioning how he remains hopeful for a revival). Plus we know from M&Gs that there was a similar reason given for Cas and Sam.

The fact that part of Jensen’s joking was to say that Misha said he had nothing going on seems inconsiderate, since we know Misha was indeed filming GK at the time.

It would be interesting to see how they would answer now, knowing that TW in officially canceled. Perhaps a good question for their panel at BurCon!

Thanks for the citations! I love asks that include cites!!! There's more, including where Misha told fans in a m&g and at autos that he was asked to appear, but declined it because he wanted something more meaningful than a cameo. The "more meaningful than a cameo" excuse was also used for Jared. So Misha was telling people he declined when Jensen was saying he declined. I remember at the time chatting about it in discord and saying "What is the truth??" I think the truth is between the two - they both realized it would be better for Castiel to appear in the revival. Jensen was totally joking when he said that Misha said that he had nothing going on, but I don't think it was obvious he was joking.

This may be strange, but do you have any idea where I might find some ppl who would know about and be fine to tell info that was shared at M&Gs?

This fandom is so annoying sometimes because SO MANY ppl will vague blog about things they heard in a M&G, and then when you ask for details they're like "can't say because of the NDA 🤐"

The information is clearly already out there, and they weren't even IN the meet and greet, yet they act all high and mighty being secretive about info that's already being shared.

Sorry if you're the wrong person to vent about this, it just irritates me to no end. If you're gonna follow the NDA, then don't say anything. If you're not, then don't withhold the information to a select few – it's not hard.

(The information I saw that prompted this is apparently Jensen confirmed that "Watching Over Me" was written about Cas.)

I mean. I get it. Especially when there might be conflicting information depending on the source.

But the m&g do require an NDA. So I get why people don’t just go “hey I was there and this is what I saw and heard.” Because they’ll be banned and depending on what they say, could also be in legal trouble for breaking the NDA.

So instead, it ends up being a game of telephone with no one knowing the original source because it could be one of any of the 20 people who got tickets for that particular m&g. But the general public for the most part aren’t going to know who that is. However CE will know. And they will ban people. And would have no problem giving the guest’s legal team the information.

And I’ve seen posts about WOM too. But the thing with that is that we already have Misha saying in a panel that Jensen wrote it about Cas and then the next day someone asked Jensen during their auto and he was all cheeky and winked (if I recall correctly) but never gave a direct response.

So whoever was in the m&g may have felt comfortable sharing this info because it was only adding to info that was already public. Rather than a new unknown situation.
