Chapter 10: Scouts

Training for a scout is a whole different ball game when compared to the training of most other positions.

Scouts must not only train their bodies to be strong but also swift and agile, lest they be caught and killed by fishermen or another scout. 

They must also practice staying hidden in the shadows, staying calm under pressure, escaping from multiple enemies, and, most importantly of all, being observant of their surroundings.

A scout with keen senses and observational skills could mean the difference between life and death for everyone on the team. 

And, anyone who said otherwise were either non-regulars or a regular spoiled by luck 

An oblivious scout was a dead scout. Period.

Hatsu, Miseng, and Shibisu knew this all too well as the trio decided to do some usual warm-ups before their departure on the Hell Train.

Miseng was “playing” tag with Shibisu all around the dimly lit platform, while Hatsu was stretching in preparation for “playing” tag with the winner of that round. 

Only about an hour or so was left before departure so the three scouts decided to get in as much warm up as possible before their actual training began. 

Training that will be absolutely critical if they wished to survive and find their former friend. Whom they once looked up like a bright light in a sea of darkness.

“Tag! You're it!” Miseng launched herself at Shibisu at the last second. Grabbing the older scout by the waist and sending them both plummeting down to the soft tall grass beneath the platform and pine trees. 

Both scouts landed on the grass with a soft thump, with Shibisu rolling on his back laughing his heart out. “Good job, Miseng. You really have gotten a lot faster since the last time we played.”

Miseng giggled, brushing the grass off her pink and red dress as she sat up from the ground. “Really? Cause it feels like you’ve gotten way slower than last time.”

“What!” Shibisu sat up from the grass. “No, I haven't! I have gotten way faster over the past few decades or so!”

“Are you sure about that, Mr. Killing Arts?” Hatsu said loudly from the top of the platform.

“Make fun all you want, Hatz. But once you’ve seen my new and improved killing arts, you’ll regret ever making fun of the legendary-Oww! Oww! Oww! Oww!” A small acorn hit front and center on Shibisu's head, causing the scout to collapse on the ground in pain. 

Laughter could be heard from both of his friends as Shibisu jumped onto his feet, ran up the stairs, and began chasing Hatsu all around the platform. Trying his absolute damndest to tackle Hatsu as revenge for throwing that harder-than-rock acorn.

“You’ll pay for this,” Mr. Killing Arts yelled. Failing miserably as the swordsman ducked, jumped and weaved through Shibisu's tackles like nothing. 

Hatsu was much too swift and agile for his own good, Shibisu thought. 

This chase continued on for several minutes, before Miseng shrugged, stretched a bit and joined in on the fun.  

It didn't take long for all three scouts to begin playing like a group of rowdy kids. 

Fighting with sticks, sliding down grass, playing hide and seek and just having a grand old time.

So much so, that they manage to temporarily forget the gut retching agony and fear that swelled deep within their hearts.
