Miscellaneous ARCHIE. Ploughing through these comics, as I’m doing now, I come across so many good panels—weird things, funny stuff, innuendo, sweetness, well-drawn poses, bits I remember from when I was a kid—I might just as well compile them into galleries. And the Riverdale posts always seem pretty popular anyway.

Miscellaneous ARCHIE gallery #2. Yesterday I said I’d do more “if people liked them”. Well, 1,000+ notes and plenty of private messages say you do (thanks for all the replies), so let’s continue. Let’s continue until everyone is utterly sick of them.

In the middle of the story “Photogenius” (Betty & Veronica #118, 1965) there’s this brief bit where Betty visits a photo shop (images 1 and 2). The kid who works there can’t believe it—Betty Cooper in his shop! He’s completely smitten with her. It’s suggested Betty and the kid know each other and Betty kind of plays him, yet the scene is so weirdly sweet in its innocence. “Betty Cooper, dad! She stood right there!” Usually Betty was portrayed as the timid tomboy, but she could be an alluring siren if she wanted to, easily outclassing Veronica. The way the scene plays out is perfect cartooning. Look at their poses.

To me, the mid-1950s to 1960s period is the Archie series’ finest hour. Dan DeCarlo’s art was at its most elegant and attractive (I love the vintage print quality), and Frank Doyle wrote the best stories, masterclasses in light comedy. Doyle knew how to spice up his plots with pointy dialogue and snappy side observations on human life. Set-ups perfectly pay off, the characters feel like feeling humans instead of yapping plot pawns, and there’s not one word out of place. Any (aspiring) comics writer should study Frank Doyle’s work.
