Zane Holm: The Door
Zane frowns. He had been to this part of the library before, hadn't he? But he'd never seen this door before, he's certain of it. Now, is he lost or is this a trap or…? They've never attacked him in the Palace library before - too many priceless books - so he doesn't think it's a trap. Not by them, at the very least.
He glances around at the surrounding tall bookcases filled with books that make this small area of the maze that is the Mirtran Librarian. Yeah, he's almost willing to bet his life he's where he thinks he is.
Could it be a trick from the ones that supposedly want him dead? He ponders. No, he doesn't think it's that. He's pretty sure he'd been in pain if they were close. He very much remembers that from his 13th birthday, even if he has no recollection of them - are they even real? It could all be just a lie from them, he honestly wouldn't be that surprised.
Zane shakes his head. He's been standing there in the poorly lit library all alone in the middle of the night for too long. Just letting his rambling thoughts go at a mile an hour. Fuck these stupid be alert for days exercises. What he wouldn't give for a good night of sleep in his lovely bed.
The door is still there. It looks solid. Made of dark wood. It does not seem to fit the rest of the decor but it also doesn't stand out that much.
Zane sighs. Perhaps interacting with a mysterious door isn't the smartest idea but he's sleep deprived and has nothing better to do.
He takes the small wooden key from around his neck and, with barely a thought, let's it take its other form. The small dark green stone with gold veins on the bow starts to glow brightly, engulfing the rest of the key, the light then growing thicker and longer on Zane's hand until he's holding a tall staff of twisted branches with small stones like the one on the bow scattered all over.
Just because he's about to do something stupid doesn't mean he shouldn't be careful.
Zane touches the door lightly with the tip of the staff and waits.
Nothing happens. The door is still there, unchanged.
"Hum…" grasping his staff tightly with one hand, he touches the door lightly with the other and closes his eyes, focusing deeply on the door, trying to feel its intentions (and begging not to fall asleep).
It doesn't feel like any harm will come to him from interacting with it.
"Alright, guess no one'll tear me a new one if I open you," he tells no one.
Zane moves his hand from the door towards the knob, slowly, still not 100% certain it won't decide to attack.
But it doesn't. After another moment of hesitation, he twists the knob. Locked. Not a problem. He casts the unlocking charm and twists the knob once more. There-still locked?!
He frowns. A locked door that doesn't seem to belong and refuses to open?
It takes him a few minutes to process it, the cogs in his mind turning slowly.
"Oh!" He gasps once it finally clicks. Could it be? Could this be a Door?
Suddenly awake with a rush of excitement, Zane wills his staff back to a key. It should work, he read it in one of the books.
He approaches the key to the lock and the small stone begins to glow as the key enters. Zane attempts to turn it and… There! He heard a click, he's certain of it!
He shoots for the doorknob and opens the door and, on the other side, he sees a long corridor with many doors of all kinds, openings leading to other long corridors and stairs. So many stairs.
He can't help the half choked giggle that escapes him. He found the Stair! The Stair only his staff can grant access to! Well, it's the only thing in Mirtran that can without any risk of failure. As far as the books say. And only as long as one finds a Door 1st. Which he's pretty sure he just did.
But there is no time to lose! He can get out of this place! Sure, it hasn't all been bad but… fuck! He needs a break. A break from this madness. Just a little vacation. Most who ventured into the Stair with his staff made their way back. He won't be any different. Right? Right! … Maybe he should get some things 1st. Just in case. He's not planning to never come back. Not really. Is he? No. It's-it's not that bad. He just wants a few days without so many expectations. And fights. He'll leave a note! That way they'll know where he went. Plus, it's not like they'll be able to enter the Stair before he decides to come back.
With his mind made up, Zane rushes out of the library and up the stairs to his bedroom where he quickly begins to pack and summon all he thinks will come in hand. A notebook and pens, some changes of clothes. Some yarn? Some food and bottles of water might be a good idea too. The Palace is pretty deserted at night and the rooms are soundproofed so he can be as loud as he wants. They won't notice he's gone until either he falls asleep or it's morning.
The small green and purple dragon snugly sleeping in his bed opens their eyes with a disgruntled groan. "It's late…!" comes the low squeaky complaint.
"I found it, Sugarplum!" Zane informs his small companion. "The Grand Stair. We leave now. Just for a few days." Or maybe a bit longer? He should have at least some weeks before they can go hunt him down. Oh! The note! He mustn't forget about the note!
With everything packaged in a large travel suitcase over half his size and a heavy backpack, and the note on his bedside table, Zane scoops up the sleepy dragon and returns to the library where he goes through the door.

Identification of MicroRNA Targets of Capsicum spp. Using MiRTrans-a Trans-Omics Approach.
Related Articles Identification of MicroRNA Targets of Capsicum spp. Using MiRTrans-a Trans-Omics Approach. Front Plant Sci. 2017;8:495 Authors: Zhang L, Qin C, Mei J, Chen X, Wu Z, Luo X, Cheng J, Tang X, Hu K, Li SC Abstract The microRNA (miRNA) can regulate the transcripts that are involved in eukaryotic cell proliferation, differentiation, and metabolism. Especially for plants, our understanding of miRNA targets, is still limited. Early attempts of prediction on sequence alignments have been plagued by enormous false positives. It is helpful to improve target prediction specificity by incorporating the other data sources such as the dependency between miRNA and transcript expression or even cleaved transcripts by miRNA regulations, which are referred to as trans-omics data. In this paper, we developed MiRTrans (Prediction of MiRNA targets by Trans-omics data) to explore miRNA targets by incorporating miRNA sequencing, transcriptome sequencing, and degradome sequencing. MiRTrans consisted of three major steps. First, the target transcripts of miRNAs were predicted by scrutinizing their sequence characteristics and collected as an initial potential targets pool. Second, false positive targets were eliminated if the expression of miRNA and its targets were weakly correlated by lasso regression. Third, degradome sequencing was utilized to capture the miRNA targets by examining the cleaved transcripts that regulated by miRNAs. Finally, the predicted targets from the second and third step were combined by Fisher's combination test. MiRTrans was applied to identify the miRNA targets for Capsicum spp. (i.e., pepper). It can generate more functional miRNA targets than sequence-based predictions by evaluating functional enrichment. MiRTrans identified 58 miRNA-transcript pairs with high confidence from 18 miRNA families conserved in eudicots. Most of these targets were transcription factors; this lent support to the role of miRNA as key regulator in pepper. To our best knowledge, this work is the first attempt to investigate the miRNA targets of pepper, as well as their regulatory networks. Surprisingly, only a small proportion of miRNA-transcript pairs were shared between degradome sequencing and expression dependency predictions, suggesting that miRNA targets predicted by a single technology alone may be prone to report false negatives. Zane frowns at the light purple and green egg on his desk. Why would such a thing be in the Survival Class? Are they going to cook it? Everyone's eggs seem to be slightly different and the Potion's teacher is in the room. Are some poisonous? Are they going to have to figure out which ones? Is someone going to end up in the hospital before the class is over?
"Settle down, class," Miss Valentine begins bored, not really caring if the noise diminishes. “As I’m sure you’ve all realised by now, it’s time for the annual egg assignment.
He glances around. There are some confused faces, much like his own, but most of his classmates do seem to be at least partially aware of whatever the assignment is. Or, at the very least, not care about it.
Most of his… training mates seem annoyed at the task with the exception of Rahela and Icefand who seem absolutely thrilled.
"For the next… let's say 2 months, you are to take your little bundle of joy everywhere with you and make sure it hatches into a healthy specimen." The other Miss Valentine takes over with a big smile and tone that sounds more appropriate for a kindergarten class rather than one full of the 13 year olds they are, hovering slightly off the ground.
Is this the Mirtran version of the pretend an egg/doll/bag of something is a baby so you realise you aren't ready to become a parent and don't have sex thing he sometimes saw on TV back home? Wait! Did she say they hatch!?
"Now, the assignment will not be over until the 2 months pass, so I wouldn't try to hurry them if I were you."
"On the other hand," the Survival teacher continues the explanation, "this' an excellent opportunity to practice fighting with a truly defenceless dead weight holding you down so keep your guard up. Any student who manages to destroy someone else's charge'll get a reward. Whoever loses their charge will get detention."
*
The walk back to the Palace from home was completely nerve wrecking!
So many students thinking of smashing his egg. What a feat it would be to destroy the egg of the marked one! But he? - for Zane could clearly feel the confusion still present in everyone's mind - is still so fresh! So weak. Maybe we should wait? Let him finish it. Nourish it. Wouldn't it be funny? Does he know? I hope no one tells him.
Gosh! How Zane wishes he could block the thoughts, so loud and filled with ill intentions towards him!
It's with great relief he closes the door to the Palace and his mind is finally alone, with only his own thoughts to break the silence.
He stays like that for a moment, holding the egg gently in his arms with his back against the solid wood doors breathing deeply as he calms down.
"What do you have there?" The soft echoey voice of Queen Flora brings him back to the world.
She's walking down the hall holding her long green princess dress with pink roses, the golden tiara reminiscent of a flower crown sparkling on her long wavy pink hair.
"An egg," Zane shows her. "I have to care for it for 2 months."
"Oh-? Oh," she offers him a sad smile, lowering herself to both see it better and be at his level. "I never really understood the point of that assignment. It was Princess Sarah's idea, did you know? Although, I must say, I don't think it has ever had the same impact since the first time we did it. I wish you luck with your task."
"I can raise an egg!" Zane cannot help but feel insulted at the Queen's words. "I grew up on a farm. I was in charge of the chickens…!"
Her dark blue eyes sparkle, amused with his reply. "Fair," she straightens up. "Maybe you'll fare better than expected."
*
The following days everyone's eggs slowly hatch. Lilian gets a fire phoenix which her icy companion finds to be a nuisance while Rahela hatches a tiny little black snake she wraps on her neck. It lasts only until the 1st training - she completely forgets it's there and drains it dead.
Ylva and Icefan both get lizards, one fragile but venomous the other slow but sturdy.
Zane's egg is one of the last to hatch. It opens to reveal a small purple and green dragon, the size of a newly born kitten.
Having the baby dragon to care for is a nice change of pace. It gives him something to focus on, to keep his mind away from how much he misses his family. The small critter needs him.
*
Zane takes the small dragon everywhere. It is the assignment, after all. But, more than that, it's just… nice. It's nice having the little hatchling with him, either on his arm or the little bag he bought to carry it around or even on his shoulder once the darling is strong enough to stay there.
And, since they're always together, why not talk to it? Tell it about what he's doing, recite it his school work. Maybe even share some fond memories of his life before Mirtran.
And it listens with such big and curious eyes! They're such a darling! Zane knows the dragon will likely be taken some place else once the two months are up, but surely there's nothing wrong in giving it a nickname in the meantime. It's just weird not calling it by a proper name.
So he names the little dragon Sugarplum.
*
The others shake their head once they realise he named his task. Such a dumb thing to do, they think. He's not the only one but that he did it seems to be almost an insult. How could the marked one be so stupid?
"You don't think I'm stupid, do you, Sugarplum?" Zane asks his charge late at night while they're both laying in bed under the cover, the small dragon purring happily as Zane scratches them under their chin.
He probably shouldn't be letting them sleep with him, but it's not like they were given any instructions other than《Raise them》and he let Cookie sleep in his bed. And Sugarplum is just as worthy of it as Cookie was.
Gosh! How Zane misses his family and pup.
"I'm gonna miss you, you know? I wish I could keep you once this thing is over. Or at least visit you. Honestly, I think you're the closest thing to an actual friend I have in this god forsaken place. You are my friend, right, Sugarplum?"
"Fiend."
Zane sits upright on the bed. Did Sugarplum…? "Did you just say friend?"
"Fiend!"
Can dragons speak!?
*
"Fiend! Fiend!" Sugarplum squeals happy.
"Oh my. I knew your little charge was rare but I did not think it was this much!" Queen Flora watches it with worry in her eyes. "I wonder just how Dandelion got her hands in one of these…"
"Was I supposed to teach them how to talk? Cause I didn't think they could…! Should they speak more by now? Or are they just like a parrot…?"
"Oh, Zane, darling. No…! You-you should not be teaching your task. You really, really shouldn't. And you really shouldn't be getting attached."
"I know," Zane can't help rolling his eyes. "I know I can only keep Sugarplum till the 2 months are up. I can be friends with them and say goodbye when they go to their new home."
"Oh, Zane… haven't you realised it yet?" Queen Flora places a hand on his shoulder and squeezes lightly. "Sugarplum isn't going nowhere. When the time is over, you're going to kill them and harvest their body for potions."
"What!? Why didn't they tell us…?!"
"It's part of the assignment - to learn sometimes you must sacrifice what you hold dear. If you don't know how it ends then you won't stop yourself from caring for the charge." She tucks a loose strand of hair behind his ears. "It never quite had the same element of surprise since that 1st time, but still must be done."
Zane can't help the tears that begin to fall from his eyes. "What-what potions can Miss Valentine do with Sugarplum?"
"Honestly? I don't know. I don't think Sugarplum is from our corner of the staircase. She can either make great new discoveries or just make dragon soup."
"Would the discoveries help people…?"
Queen Flora sighs. "No. Even if Dandelion manages a proper potion, dragons like Sugarplum are not easy to come by. We will not be able to replicate any results she might get."
Zane picks up Sugarplum and holds them close to his chest.Â
*
"I failed the egg assignment," Zane proclaims to Professor Valentine of the Survival class who raises a blond eyebrow.
"You have your assignment purring on your arms. How in Queen Flora's sake have you failed?"
"I know how it ends and I'm not doing it! I'm keeping Sugarplum." He replies defiant, perhaps more than necessary but he is simply not killing the sweet dragon for nothing!
So the marked one had bonded with the thing. He sure was different from Serenity - she killed her charge with zero hesitation. Her sister though, the evil one they should have put down the moment they found her, she refused. And, for that, she was a target for the rest of the school year.
"Refusing to harvest your charge has consequences."
"I don't care."
"For the rest of the school year anyone who manages to attack you with non lethal or permanent damage will get extra credit. It will not matter if it's within school boundaries or not. And we're still quite a few months away from the Summer." Back with Morgana it had been a loophole, an opportunity to let everyone give her what she deserved. Now… now it's a challenge. Just how far is the runt willing to suffer for the dragon? He might be weak, but he's not stupid. He knows he's in for a bad time if he goes through with this.
Zane cannot help the fear that crushes his heart at the woman's words. It's already difficult with the school divided by everyone in class. To have everyone out for his blood…
"I don't care." Still he repeats his words.

With Lilian, Rahela, Ylva and Icefan already snooping around in the Grand Stair for him, Zane has no other choice than to actually figure out which of his powers still work outside of Mirtran and resume his training.
Still it’s with a heavy heart that he gets up earlier than usual, reassuring his little dragon that they can stay in bed.
“It’s early…” Sugarplum pouted.
“I know. Don’t worry. I don’t expect you to come. I’m just going for a walk.” Zane replies, tucking the small creature.
Sugarplum frowns, then opens an eye, glancing at their friend in worry “Alone?”
“Don’t worry. The Sanctuary’s safe. We’ll be fine.”
*
Zane crosses the more populated area of the Sanctuary, careful not to be spotted. He’s not going to do anything wrong, he’d never betray the trust Tanwen and Lucien placed on him when they opened their world to him. But he is very much aware he’s going to make a fool of himself - he already did when he could use all of his powers, there’s no way he won’t be even more pathetic with the limitations of the Stair - so he’d rather practice without anyone knowing.
He ends up settling for a small clearing near the river, far away from any farm or house.
It definitely took him longer to reach a suitable spot than he’d expected and he can only hope Sugarplum won’t approach anyone to find him as he sits down, feeling already rather burned down. Taking such a big walk before breakfast was not his smartest move, especially after so many weeks just enjoying the quiet life of the Sanctuary.
Zane takes a deep breath before he begins. He decides to start out with a simple fire spell, conjuring a small ball of fire on the palm of his hand was simple enough back in Mitran.
He opens his hand and wills the fire to appear. But nothing happens. This isn’t good. He thinks. This was one of the easiest spells…! He mastered it years ago…!
Another sighs, maybe if he says the incantation out loud? Gosh! Can he even remember the spell? It’s been so long since he has needed to speak the words…!
He gives it another try, trying the word he thinks should help the flame appear. And then another. And another. He keeps trying to conjure the damned thing till he lets out a strangled curse. Why is this being so hard!?
He lets himself fall back on the soft grass covered ground with a defeated sigh. The sky above him is such a lovely shade of blue with barely a cloud passing by. So serene, almost mockingly so, he cannot help but think. It wasn’t this difficult to duplicate the ball of yarn when he first left Mirtran, was it? Zane ponders as he stares ahead. And to double an object is so much more difficult than to heat up the air till it bursts into a flame. Isn’t it?
Zane bites his lips. Yes, he’s pretty sure they learned to conjure fire before they learned to summon actual objects. So why was he able to do the later so easily after he crossed the door but cannot do the former now?
He stays like that for a moment, feeling the soft breeze blowing above him. But it hadn’t been immediate how to conjure the second ball of yarn, had it? Zane had tried to summon it as if he were still in Mitran at first and it had failed. But he felt oh so very tired, it had been easy to let the magic of the Stair envelop him and guide his thoughts and magic, to listen to the Stair until the small object showed up before him.
Zane closes his eyes and waits. It takes a while but he soon begins to feel it, the gentle magic of Lucien and Tanwen’s domain. He sits back up, with his legs crossed, and extends his hand, softly guiding the magic of the world to lit up just a small spark, a tiny glimpse of fire over his open palm.
“Acuo!” The word comes naturally to his lips and the flame grows into an orb which he carefully juggles between his hands, always paying attention to the magic around him.
It takes a lot more focus than it did back in Mirtran, it’s another philosophy of magic, different from what he’s used to. But he did manage to make it work. With more practice, he’ll hopefully get most of his powers back.
Zane throws the small ball of fire up to the sky and lets it scatter and burn out as he once again lays on the ground. It’s going to take him so much time to relearn all that’s possible.
