Ael just. Loves the Lukari. She LOVES the Lukari. And I love her relationship with Kuumaarke specifically. Kuumaarke is like, legitimately Ael’s protege the way I play it. (I suspect the kid’s got some highkey puppy-crush going on there but she’s an adult and she can handle it.)

I mean there’s some serious hero worship, which is kinda to be expected considering Ael is the dashing alien commander who swept in from the stars, greeted the Lukari with the respect she’d show the Klingons but the compassion she’d show a child, and then proceeded to (apparently single-handedly) save their world. But more than that, Ael takes a personal interest in her and wants to see her, personally, succeed--and since Ael’s also formed a close, protective bond with the Lukari as a whole, their relationship is very warm and sweet.

Which means seeing Kuumaarke in pain is always awful for her, so naturally I decided to replay Mirrors & Smoke this evening to get back in the groove and. Oh, child.

Kuumarke is from a space-hippie socialist utopian society. Ael is a street kid from the shipyard slums of of the poorest city on Romulus. Sometimes it shows.

Kumaarke, audibly shaken: I've never seen this level of suffering... Ael, quietly: I have.
