The Indian Tradition of Mangalsutras

We have all seen our mothers, grandmothers  and all married woman wearing mangalsutra and it has raised the same question in our minds throughout the decades. What does mangalsutra stand for and what is its significance? Mangalsutra is not just a fancy piece of jewellery. It has spiritual and religious values added to it which makes it essentially an Indian emblem of marriage and solidarity. The word mangalsutra comes from the two words- mangal which means auspicious and sutra which means a thread. Thus it is a thread consisting of a pendant, which is tied around the hindu bride’s neck by her husband. Thus it is symbol of marriage for the married women and it is also believed to ward off all kinds of evils. Along with that it is believed to be a symbol of ensuring their husband’s long life and well being. Thus, there are many superstitious beliefs surrounding that of a mangalsutra and its breaking is considered to be an ominous sign.

The Traditional Mangalsutra

Wearing mangalsutra is a tradition among most hindu women from north to south. The mangalsutra is first worn in the wedding where the bridegroom ties it in keeping with the chants recited by the priests. Generally the pendant and the thread are dipped in a mix of turmeric to purify it and it is then tied on the wedding day. After the wedding however, you can remove the pendant and wear it with a necklace.

                                     Maharastrian Mangalsutra

The maharashtrian mangalsutra generally has double layered beads of gold and black beads which symbolize the ancient union of shiva and shakti. The gujrati and the Marwari mangalsutra just consist of a black bead chain in a single layer which symbolizes warding off of evil forces. The Marwari style mangalsutra is the most common nowadays and is used by almost all castes and communities. Then there is the south indian style mangalsutra which is radically different from the north Indian ones.

                                    Tamilan Mangalsutras

The tamilian mangalsutras are called the thalis. It consists of a gold pendant on a turmeric dipped thread. The gold pendant has many types of engravings and designs which serves to display the traditional values behind it. Mangalsutra is also worn by the south indian Christian communities which is called a minnu. This minnu has engravings related to the Christian culture and shows the wonderful congregation of two religions. The south Indian mangalsutras often consist of beads as well as coins and pendants and are thus more traditional in aspect in comparison to the north Indian ones.

The Modern Mangalsutras

Mangalsutras have undergone a vast evolution  and makeover in the modern age due to the change in the fashion statement in the modern age. The modern day women are working women and hence prefer to wear simple jewellery pieces as compared to the heavy ones. The mangalsutras nowadays have also become sleek and subtle in design which facilitates daily wear. The heavy ones are also available but they are generally reserved for the occasions and parties. Mangalsutras have become trendier and they have become fashion jewellery  among married woman’s they love to flaunt super stylish mangalsutras.
