Satan and Mirjami as kiddos!!

The White Reindeer (Valkoinen Peura) (1952)

The White Reindeer is a wonderful piece of Finnish horror cinema history, a kind of werewolf story set in Lapland. Mirjami Kuosmanen stars as Pirita and her husband Erik Blomberg directs. It’s a small wonder a movie like The White Reindeer was made here in Finland at all. We used to have movie taxes that disproportionately punished horror movies and that’s why for example 1931 Dracula and Frankenstein never had a theatrical run here. Dracula was first broadcast on TV in 1988 and Frankenstein in 1998. So surprise, surprise, we don’t have a long history of horror movies here. Or any genre movies for that matter.

The White Reindeer starts when Pirita’s mother gives birth to Pirita and dies.After that we see adult Pirita fall in love with Aslak (Kalervo Nissilä) and the couple get married. Eventually she starts to feel lonely in their marriage while Aslak spends lot of time herding reindeer. Pirita consults a shaman to increase her allure to men and is told to sacrifice to Seita the first living creature she meets on her way home. Unfortunately that creature is a reindeer calf Aslak gave Pirita as a present but she goes along with the sacrifice nonetheless. But instead of improving her marital life the ritual causes her to transform into a white reindeer by night and lure men into wilderness to kill them.

The movie’s portrayal of an alcoholic shaman was a topic of discussion here recently when the film had a screening in Midnight Sun Film Festival, and here is my two cents: Yes I feel the character is horrible and racist in light of our history of portraying Sámi people as comic drunkards and I wish they had done something different with it. I must admit I giggled when I watched the scene in a movie theater a few years ago. Not because I thought it was hilarious but because I thought it was embarrassing that they had that in the movie and that’s my way to deal with it. The character has one thankfully brief scene but I understand that it can make Sámi people angry and uncomfortable.

But back on track, Mirjami Kuosmanen gives an intense lead performance that is nuanced and complicated. The movie addresses issues of female lust and sexual frustration through metaphor and Kuosmanen’s performance. During the movie she transforms from a brisk lady racing at the reindeer races to a destructive witchlike character. But she never loses the sympathy of the viewer. It is almost like Pirita’s fate is to face the misfortune right from the moment she was born.

My impression is that post-war movies seem to have more meaty roles for women and while that is just my impression made on watching my limited collection, I think this movie really embodies that.

The scenery and shooting of the film is very impressive. The sacrifice scene in particular is one of those things that will stick with you. The transformation scenes are done very effectively with just a cut, no slow and cheesy effects here. The score is mesmerizing and is used very effectively to enhance the horror and tragedy of Pirita’s predicament. The movie has at times a very hypnotic, dreamlike feel to it and I always appreciate that.

Just to note, I love the old woman in the last act of the movie who unflinchingly throws a knife at Pirita who is running through a village in her reindeer form. She is so bad ass.

In closing, his is lovely movie that should definitely be more known.

Eureka Entertainment should be releasing a new 4K remastered version in UK on 8th of April 2019.
