Fun fact?

Today You Learned about the origin of the name 'Merlin'! Maybe.

In medieval Welsh legend, there was this bard/madman named 'Myrddin', who is commonly accepted to have been the figure eventually turned into Merlin by being incorporated into Arthurian lore. How did we get from 'Myrddin' to 'Merlin', then? Well, French medievalist Bruno Gaston Paris had a theory.

See, 'Myrddin' is pronounced differently in Welsh, I believe, as the 'dd' is pronounced as 'th'? I think? Regardless, a lot of people who aren't Welsh aren't going to know how to pronounce it. Bruno Gaston Paris's theory was that Geoffrey of Monmouth, writing and hoping that French people would read his work, had to change Myrddin's name because, looking at it, they'd think it's pronounced something like 'Mird-in'.

Which, uh, in French, sounds an awful lot like 'merde'.

Which is 's***' in English ("feces").

So it's entirely possible that his name was changed to avoid sound like 'crap' in French.

An alternative theory is that Merlin's name is meant to invoke 'merle', or the French word for blackbird--which would be a fitting name for a guy with mysterious magic powers.

My Year in Fic 2024

Thank you to @mirdeli for the tag! (love you and your writing <3)

First of all, I can't believe how much I've actually written this year until I sat down and took it all in. When I first started actively writing for the legacy fandom, it was a very different experience. I wrote my first fic as a fun continuation of the main story. I thought about where these characters might go and how their relationships would change in the wake of their choices. Then I hated it, deleted all 30 chapters from the internet and then re-wrote it. Then I started a second story with a new mc and new dynamics, that at the time I was really proud of. But then as I'm sure you all know, there was this person that went around accusing the adults who wrote with more mature themes and aged up characters of being foul things. Including but not limited to leaving cruel comments on art or fics that had anything above a T rating. It got so bad that it discouraged me from writing with mc content completely, which really broke my heart because I loved what I was creating with it.

But even after all of that, I couldn't stop creating stories. A big thing that resonates with me as a person as well as a writer is wanting to tell stories with characters that people already know and love but introduce themes that feel authentic to a human experience. Such as things like sexuality, anger, tense family dynamics etc.

And with that in mind, I started testing the waters with a silly little au for one of my favorite disney films Sleeping Beauty. Only this time featuring a love story without "mc". Then I did another silly au that was centered around one of my favorite superheros, Spiderman. (Both remain unfinished, but I plan to focus back on those this year)

In doing so, I found this corner of the fandom where everyone had been nothing but accepting and encouraging each other with their art and I finally started to feel more comfortable in posting my works again.

So, before I make this entirely too long, let's get into it:

I know I'm mostly known for writing Sebinis/Weaslow now, and I love that because the friends I've made and the fun I've had over here I would never trade for anything. But I do hope one day I'll feel the drive again to finish Side Effects. (maybe even my first ever mc fic that's still up but that one more complex) I do love those characters so much and I miss them. Maybe one day.

With that said, I can't wait to share more stories (after completing some active ones first.) Maybe I'll even feel more confident to start posting my backlog for other fandoms.

Last thing I googled: ...Gay porn. I had a rare couple hours home alone, don't judge me

Current obsession: I'm 20 years late to Drarry, does that count? But still Sirry, Heddy, any good cross-gen shenanigans.

Looking forward to: Trump's hopefully painful death. Finishing my dirty Pottercest so I can start playing dolls with Drarry. Visiting the UK in May. A bottle glass of wine after Sobriety Month. Overcoming dysphoria, depression, etc.

Last book: Lord of the Flies, which I'd never read. Made me wanna shove some fictional boys on a deserted island and see what cooks.

Favorite animal: Quokka or sloth

Last meal: Smoothie

Socks/slippers/bare feet: grippy socks grippy socks grippy socks (there is no carpet in my house, it’s grippy socks or death)

Last thing that made me laugh: My partner making weird noises, I think

Favorite lazy-sunday activity: Sitting in front of the fire with coffee and writing fic

Tagged by @valiantarcher to list six books I want to read this year! Hmm, I don't usually plan out my reading too carefully, but here are a few that I've been planning to read: 1. The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson

I bought this when it first came out. When it arrived, I was in the midst of end-of-semester crunch time and busy trying to transfer to a different research group. I keep remembering that I haven't read it and then forgetting again! 2. I think it's time to revisit the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. I'm back on a Star Wars kick, and it's been years since I read these. 3. Tithe by Holly Black. I currently have it checked out of my library, and I know nothing more about it than that it's a Tam Lin retelling and that the author was half of the writing team for the Spiderwick Chronicles.

4. Chalice, by Robin Mckinley. @clevermird suggested this one, and I'm excited to read it! I've had mixed feelings about Robin Mckinley's works in the past, but I'm hopeful that this will be one of the ones I like.

5. Imaginary Lands, an anthology of fantasy stories. Another Mird rec!

6. I think it's also time to revisit Elizabeth Goudge. I read The White Witch last year, and really enjoyed it, and I'm curious to try, say, The Dean's Watch, and see if I get more from it than when I last tried it (in high school!).

Mostly fantasy, as you can see! I don't usually keep very strict tbr lists, but I'm always happy to get book recommendations. Does anyone have nonfiction/nonfantasy recs to add a little variety? This is a retelling of certain events in my fic Silver, Ash, and Bone from a different perspective, and contains spoilers for that story through chapter 16, but can be read blind as well.

I originally posted a version of this several years ago, but over time grew dissatisfied with it and did heavy edits to the point that I felt like it was worth reposting rather than just replacing the old version quietly. I've left the original iteration up in case anyone really liked that one, but this is the version I consider "canon" to the main Silver Ash and Bone story now

James took a short breath, Sirius eyes falling open in anticipation. “Well, to put it bluntly. You’re the hottest lad in Hogwarts, and you’re my best friend.” Sirius lit up in a grin. “Prongs, do you fancy me?” He raised himself up to look at James. “Is this a confession?” James chuckled. “No, Pads. If I liked you, I would have told you ages ago.” He smiled. “But I do see it’s very fitting the two hottest Gryffindor’s are best friends.” He added, winking. Sirius burst out laughing. Wiping away a tear, he replied “I do so agree with that.”

Mird snarled before him, hackles raised, ready to tear his throat if he even looked as if he were about to make the wrong move, shielding the small figure that stood ramrod-straight behind the strill.

The child’s dark eyes stared at him, unblinking, fear and trepidation shining through, despite the determined set to his pale, aristocratic features.

So. There was no mistaking who this child was related to. After all that osik about never having children, Vau had knocked up some woman and hadn’t even bothered to mention it before dropping the child in their apartment in Coruscant and then fucking off to who knew where. And, with how petrified the ad looked, well, Skirata could just feel himself itching to give the old barve another solid right hook.
