Swaddled to Snoozeville

Looking for a swaddle to keep your little Houdini snug as a bug at bedtime? What might seem like a simple (and inexpensive) purchase may be the key to a good night's sleep for you and baby. Fortunately, I have spent countless hours researching and testing a variety of swaddles, so you don't have to waste your precious time on such a seemingly small purchase! 

When my little bundle was still a newborn, he had the uncanny ability to startle himself out of even the most peaceful slumber. Receiving blankets couldn't keep him wrapped up for a minute. Enter the swaddle. This little contraption is made to constrain little one's arms and legs to imitate the warm and cozy feeling of being in the womb. This product is quite genius in theory. But, when you have a little escape artist on your hands, it is important to find the right swaddle for the job. During my trials (and tribulations), I tested three brands of swaddles (from left to right above). 

Summer Infant SwaddleMe

Halo SleepSack Swaddle

Miracle Blanket

Pros of the Summer Infant SwaddleMe

Comes in three sizes (Preemie, Small/Medium, and Large). 

Many cute and colorful patterns available.

Relatively inexpensive ($25-35 for a set of 3).

Velcro tabs make it easy to swaddle baby.

Lightweight material keeps baby from overheating.

Cons of the Summer Infant SwaddleMe

Not very long in the leg, so baby outgrows quickly.

Not the snuggest hold. My little escape artist had no trouble wiggling out of this swaddle from day one.

Pros of the Halo SleepSack Swaddle

Long leg area that fits baby for several months. (We began using this swaddle again when baby had outgrown the other brands.)

Holds baby pretty tight. It took some struggling for my little one to wriggle out of this one.

You know I am a sucker for cute patterns.

Cons of the Halo SleepSack Swaddle

The Velcro tabs are large and loud, so if baby is sleeping when you put it on, you can't re-adjust the tabs without waking baby. This can make midnight diaper changes a challenge.

Pricey. Around $20 for one.

Bottom line: After weeks without sleep trying the aforementioned swaddles, my mother-in-law took pity on us and bought two Miracle Blankets. (Two were all we needed, since you don't need to wash them everyday if baby wears a onesie underneath.) This may very well be the most valuable thing we owned after we brought baby home from the hospital. This includes our cars. You cannot put a price on sleep, and the Miracle Blanket brought that wonderful pleasure back into our lives. This is the gift I buy my friends when they are expecting their first bundles of joy. I truly cannot give it the praise it deserves, but I will try.

Pros of the Miracle Blanket

This baby is the ultimate straight jacket. Even Houdini himself would have been stuck in this thing all night long.

No Velcro, snaps, or zippers to fuss with or to rub little one's skin. Just four simple flaps of lightweight material.

Only comes in one size, so you don't need to make multiple purchases as baby grows.

Cons of the Miracle Blanket

A little difficult to put on baby. But, it does get easier with practice (and a handy online video).

Like the SleepSack, this swaddle is quite pricey. One will cost you around $30. But, in my humble opinion, the Miracle Blanket is worth every penny. 

As with any swaddle, the day will come when it will no longer be safe to use (usually when baby begins to roll over)...Enter the four month sleep regression.

I hope this review helps you on your arduous quest to Dreamland. Just remember, whether you want it to or not, time will pass quickly and you will be reacquainted with sleep eventually. I promise.
