MinKwon Hosted 2 DACA Conferences in October
MinKwon hosted its DACA Conferences on October 1st and 22nd! 30 participants met with our social and legal staff to renew their DACA as well as partake in an informational session headed by Organizing Fellow Jung Rae Jang.
Participants met with social service and legal staff to attend workshops on how to fill out DACA renewal applications as well as learn the legal issues involving their immigration status.
Jung Rae covered the importance of community organizing for undocumented youths. Despite being perceived as voiceless, undocumented youths can influence the changes that they want to see through community organizing and education.
For more information on our community organizing efforts, contact Jung Rae Jang at [email protected].
MinKwon Co-hosted a Panel on the llegal Immigration Reform & Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) with the Museum of the City of New York
On October 20th, MinKwon co-hosted a panel discussion on immigrant activism and the llegal Immigration Reform & Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA,) at the Museum of the City of New York. The IIRIRA was one of the most controversial US immigration laws that sparked some of the most significant activist movements of the 21st century.
MinKwon Shares NYC Public Advocate Office’s Concerns of the DACA and Naturalization Backlogs
On October 5th, MinKwon joined NYC Public Advocate Letitia James in sounding the alarm over USCIS backlogs delaying naturalization for hundreds of thousands across the country, many of whom were hoping to vote in the upcoming election.
James Hong, MinKwon’s Interim Executive Director expressed the frustrations held by those in the Asian American Immigrant community, “The delay in USCIS processing citizenship applications directly impacts the right to vote for hundreds of thousands. This is particularly salient for Asian Americans, who are the most likely of all race groups to be naturalized voters. This is an election of global importance and to have a bureaucratic backlog affecting our democratic process is a tragedy of historic proportions.
This backlog is also affecting DACA recipients, many of whom are now renewing their deportation relief with the USCIS. The MinKwon Center knows dozens of these young people waiting for their DACA renewals to be approved seeing their expiration date come and go, even losing the jobs they gained as a results of DACA, and becoming technically undocumented again.”
If you have any questions regarding naturalization or DACA, please give us a call at 718-460-5600.
