you guys ever think about how its canon that michiru just holed herself up in her room and shut herself away from the outside world because of her suddenly becoming a beastman. her best friend was kidnapped and now she cant even go outside or talk to her friends or play basketball or even be remotely happy. and then she comes to anima city, where shes welcomed with open, loving arms by gem and melissa, and is saved by literal death by shirou, and befriends the kids who live in the slums, and plays baseball surrounded by a roaring stadium, and goes to a party with nina, and learns to fly with pingua, and falls in love with nazuna all over again.
michiru goes from becoming a complete shut-in because of her fears to loudly and unapologetically being herself, embracing her beastman form, and just finally...being able to be happy, without any restrictions.

i didnt wanna make this post so late when nobody will see it at such tense times but i cant hold this off any longer. i want to talk about bna.
let me start off by saying that bna is not the groundbreaking, astounding work y’all think it is. did bna push themes of systemic oppression, and how some minorities (e.g. disabled people) arent accomodated for? yes! it did.
but the way it addressed these themes was conflicting, and it still managed to badly fuck up.
lets talk about nirvasyl syndrome. can anyone tell me why the minority stand-in has a built-in aggresive mode where they will ruthlessly attack anyone in sight, and transform into scary, violent versions of their beastmen form? can anyone tell me why nirvasyl syndrome is supposedly a result of the mixing of different beastmen? if you dont see the issue with that, it feels a lot to me like that translates to “mixed-race” in place of the “mixing of beastmen who as a result feel their territory’s invaded”.
and lets talk especially about how the antagonists of the show were beastmen themselves. the terrorists at the beginning are spared from harm, despite the amount of damage they could have caused - and theyre beastmen. pingua is angry and horrified at how not only have his family and all other migratory beastmen not been accomodated for, but shot and killed as a result, and yet he’s painted as a sympathetic criminal. alan is literally on track to eradicate beastmen as a whole - and then it turns out he’s actually one of them! why does bna have a pattern of showing the result of oppression of minorities, and then needlessly turning around and makinng the perpetrators be the oppressed minority stand-in themselves???? whats the fucking point here? whats the message being sent??? that we’re responsible for our oppression? that our anger, and our outcries in actions are wrong?
shirou telling pingua to leave, since he hasnt done anything wrong isn’t cute or romantic. shirou tells pingua to leave. and then what does he do? nothing. pingua’s dialogue resonates to an extreme degree, especially as of recently, becauses hes right - nobody does anything without being motivated to. remember how cities finally began to take action after riots and protests? pingua is angry, and justifiably so; after all, he spent his years campaigning for equal rights, and then found out that meant being restricted in his freedom. if what you take away from that scene, and shirou and pinguas relationship as a whole, is “aww cute boyfriends!” you need to wake the fuck up and pay attention to what the shows fucking fumbling to tell you. pingua, in fact, is the LEAST offensive, since hes let go and painted as more morally grey than an actual violent criminal or villain. i dont mean to make y’all cry and feel bad, but good god, really? really? thats what you took away? and it hurts, because i KNOW pinguas struggle. i know his fight. and thats not even touching alan, where his twist is not as much as a clever “gotcha!” as the show thinks it is - what the hell do you get out of maing the villain who wanted to commit fucking GENOCIDE AGAINST A RACE being PART OF THAT RACE???? and if you took away from that, from alan being allowed to live, was “awww shirous so sweet for not killing in front of michiru his baby daughter!” i suggest getting your fucking eyes checked. what you need to take away from that is “what the hell, studio trigger? why isnt the villain who wanted to eradicate an entire race punished?”. im done.

the shingua shippers got to me...need a scene where shirou personally oversees the burial of pingua’s comrades, and he escorts pingua to the graves. he doesnt really say much, and keeps his distance, and of course pingua tries to play it cool but he cant. not for long. and shirou’s sort of averse to touch (even michiru still knows she has to ask for permission), so he wont hug pingua yet or anything, but at least he has an understanding with pingua, and pingua knows even if it goes unspoken, and theyre there. in the silence. but together.

really specific au where nazuna is a streamer and so is michiru so michiru makes her play minecraft on a shared server and shes like “ok guys im going to make an epic surprise for my gf.” so she makes this massive flower biome and nazuna accidentally sees it so shes like “oh my god this is so sweet wtf what should i do?” and one of her viewers tells her to put fireworks underneath and pressure plates everywhere to surprise michiru back and shes like “ok”
day of michiru is like “nazuna i have something to show you” and nazuna is like super excited acting super surprised, they get to the flower biome and michiru accidentally steps on a pressure plate where she immediately dies in front of nazuna as a flurry of firework rockets blow her to bits. nazuna helplessly watches her gf fucking explode.

i was going to make this more controversial but then i realized a) my original idea (a comparison) did not really make sense and b) its not something i have room to talk about seeing as i didnt finish its original material so im just gonna say this instead
i know nazuna/michiru is not canon. its not official, and its very likely it will never be official. thats fine - studio trigger’s best at subtext & implication anyway over being explicit.
but the relationship they have has to be the best way ive seen “friends to rivals/enemies to friends again and lovers” ive seen yet. nazuna & michiru are shown caring for each other from day one, and you easily get a feel for how much michiru truly loves nazuna. when conflict arises in their relationship, the way they both react to each other is shown in a way that’s actually quite realistic: neither party completely hates the other, and still harbors love for them, causing a strange inner turmoil of “i dont like you but im too attached to not care about you.”
and when nazuna stops playing antagonist to pass the role off to alan, the true villain of the story, its so much better than everything thats come before it. because nazuna, even as the antagonist to michiru, even as her friend-turned-enemy, never deliberately put her in harm’s way, never deliberately hurt her just for her own selfish sake, and never stopped caring about michiru. even after michiru sought her out, even after they fought, after michiru ran to save nazuna when she didnt need saving, nazuna didnt hate michiru or wish to see her suffer or anything like that. yes, she pushed her away, but never stopped loving michiru, and never did anything intended to permanently damage or destroy their relationship.
and i think thats how it should be handled. lesbian romance. do it right
