Why Correlative/Lyrical Naming Doesn’t Work
—Clickbait Title™
A couple of months ago I got into a friendly debate (for fun because I find joy in arguing) about Lyrical names vs. Traditional names because I realised when doing some work on Warriors Rewritten, the subject of naming was the one thing I hadn’t yet tackled. Before I share any further, I just want to preface that correlative and lyrical naming only doesn’t work if applied in a serious fashion to comply with the fragile skeleton of Warriors culture that canon has given us. If you can make it work with your own world-building, more power to you.
I, personally, just cannot accept such a loose system in what is otherwise meant to be a very strict setting (one of the laws of the Warrior Code literally explains that the leader title is just a kinder word for “dictator”), and it all falls under the question of “Why?”
Why do they have a naming system and what is its purpose? Where did it originate from? Why do they work with a system of prefixes and suffixes, and why do their names change per their new rank?
I’ve complained in the past about names like Havenpelt, Slightfoot and Frecklewish, but what makes them any less acceptable than names like Lionblaze or Fuzzypelt in a system that seems to have no rules? To cherry pick what I do and do not like on very little basis suddenly didn’t set very well with me.
If they are so lax about the names they give out, why do the Clans have a naming system in the first place?
Despite all of its flaws and inconsistencies, the one thing that has always been consistent in the Warriors universe is that warrior names have to be earned, and are constantly changing throughout a Clan cat’s lifetime—especially in adolescence. By the time a cat reaches one year, depending on their capabilities as an apprentice, they may have already had their name changed twice. With this in mind, I believe it’s appropriate to say that Clan cats and non-Clan cats see names and their purposes very differently.
A Clan cat’s name is a badge more than an identity, or a show of individuality. Quite simply, there is no room to get attached to a name. What is more important is the quality and character of the cat. Their name, once lost, is merely something they once wore in the past and no longer are because they have improved past it. A cat may feel nostalgic by association of a former period in their life, such as Fireheart’s friendship with Ravenpaw, a precious friend he had to leave in the old forest territories, but I do not feel that this would apply to the suffix itself. We as reader might feel nostalgic of hearing the name “Fireheart” because we recall that period in his life with fondness, but it has been shown that it is highly offensive to purposefully refer to a Clan cat by their previous rank’s suffix. It is insulting and disrespectful, and discredits everything the cat has done to move forward in their life.
Compared to a non-Clan cat, it makes sense why Millie and Daisy did not want to change their names and why the Clan cats would be so mad about it. Daisy is Daisy, and has always been Daisy. This has been her only name, and it is her identity. If you moved into a new town and the first thing your neighbours did to welcome you into the neighbourhood was request that you change your name, it would be a little jarring. However, to the Clan cats, the rejection of a Clan name is shocking and angering because they have extended their hand (paw?) and accepted an outsider into their ranks, and this outsider is immediately disrespecting a huge part of their culture. They do not empathise with Daisy and Millie’s attachments because they cannot relate, therefore all they can see in their defiance is them spitting on their traditions and generosity.
The reason Clan cats cannot relate is because in their two-part naming system there will always, always be a cat either before or after them who shares their name. A Clan cat’s name is a title and a descriptor of that cat in that moment—the prefix describes the cat’s appearance, and their suffix describes that cat’s best attribute, whether it be a skill or a positive aspect of their personality. Minkfoot is a brown cat who has completed her training and runs very fast. It is not unreasonable to say that there have and will be more brown cats who run fast. From a writing perspective this is also a handy tool because it does its job to give your reader a visual image and a very short synopsis on that character and what their notable trait is. It does its job well within a Clan, too.
In a society where the most important factor is the Clan’s survival and your contribution to said Clan, it makes sense to reward warriors with names that glorify their best asset. How does Darkclaw contribute to his Clan? He is a cat who has completed his warrior training and is a highly skilled fighter, and everyone who hears his name will know this. Anytime his name is spoken serves as a reminder that he is useful to his Clan and his Clan, in return, values him. Snowface is a cat who is commonly accepted as very attractive, showing that she, and by affiliation her Clan, has good genes. How does Longtail contribute to his Clan? He has... a long tail?? Smallear has... small ears? Fuzzypelt’s fur is fuzzy?
My problem with correlative names is that they have no reason to be earned. If Fuzzypelt has a fuzzy pelt, why does he have to earn recognition that his pelt is fuzzy by becoming a warrior? If he was born with the name Fuzzypelt, that would be a different story, and much more practical. If Longtail was born with a long tail, it makes more sense to name him that from the get-go than to wait until he’s an adult to reaffirm that yeah, he has a long tail.
Aside from the “-step” and injury based name-changes, traditional Clan cat names are never meant to correlate.
I can only see correlative names working logically in the warrior setting if one were to obliterate rank suffixes, or even ranks entirely aside from perhaps -star. But that sounds weird, doesn’t it? Removing ranks removes one of the core aspects that distinguishes the Clans from regular cat colonies, ie rogues, loners, etc.
What I’m trying to say is, it would take a lot of rebuilding of one of the most notorious and quintessential parts of Warriors to logically cohere.
I don’t often find non-correlative lyrical prefixes, but lyrical suffixes can work if only given reason. Lionblaze earning the suffix “-blaze” instead of “-claw” is only because he’s a Sparkly New Protagonist™ and Erin Hunter has no faith in the intelligence of her readers, and that’s not a compatible reason with good world building. Even though Lionheart was dead by the time Firepaw earned his warrior name, his existence had established that -heart is a rooted and appropriate suffix to be earned. It has meaning.
I’d love to write more on this but quite frankly it is so hot here that I need to go lay in some water. I might continue this with a part II one day, but for now, feel free to respond with rebuttals or questions. Anything that sounds remotely butthurt will be ignored—I don’t know you and this was not a personal attack.

😺 and 🐱 and 🌿 (Can I ask 3 questions?)
Yep, that’s totally fine. ^^
😺: If you had/have a pet cat/s, did you give it a warrior cat name?
Actually, I’m allergic to cats! So I’ve never had one, and probably never will. Although my symptoms get less and less serious the older I get, to the point that one day I might not have any at all, I grew up with dogs so I’m the most comfortable with them. I have almost no experience with even touching cats since my allergies used to be really bad - my mother was skeptical to even let me in the same house as one.
If I did get one though, I don’t think I would give them a Warriors name just because a warrior name changes with the years, and my non-Warriors-fan friends would question and judge me, in addition to me having to pay for new tags. :p But I’ve seen shelters where all the cats are named after Warriors characters and I think that’s super cute.🐱: If you had a warrior name, what would it be?
Hmmm, depends what cat-me would look like! I’m dark blonde, honestly bordering on brunette, with lighter (both dyed and natural) highlights and grey-blue-eyes, so maybe a tonkinese colourpoint like this:
Tumblr media
For my prefix, I think I’d fancy Mink- since it matches the colours closely enough, it’s one of my favourite animals (I love mustelidae) and I love swimming. I was never the fastest or “best” though, (I had friends growing up who were on swim teams to compare to) so no -stream suffix for me.
I think I’d either be a -heart for my passion and strong beliefs (debating is a hobby :p ), or a -foot for my running speed. (my gym teacher in high school asked me to be on the track team a few times, but it didn’t work with my schedule.) Skill traits usually take precedence over personality ones, so I suppose I’d be Minkfoot!
🌿: What clan would you belong to?
Either ShadowClan or RiverClan. ShadowClan is probably my favourite Clan despite how mistreated it is, but my love for swimming and seafood would probably treat me better in RiverClan.
