This is How Muslims Live in China 🇨🇳 (Urumqi, Xinjiang) - YouTube
Urumqi, Xinjiang, China - Jack and Paige take on the North West region on China and explore deeper into the culture of this autonomous region. We start the day with chatting to some local girls before trying to check out the Mosque which was closed. We are invited into a local Neighbourhood, try Uyghur Sesame Naan and get a glimpse into the life of a everyday people. Outside the neighbourhood we find a fakes market and bargain for some North Face goods, before heading over to the Grand Bazaar. The local Livestreaming culture takes our interest and watch as people dress in traditional clothing on streams with magnificent setups. We enter the bazaar, which has a heavy military presence with guards and police at every station. While at the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar we come across a local festival, celebrating the coming together of Han and Uyghur communities. Next we head deep into the bazaar and go on a mini shopping spree trying local teas and fruits, Doppa hat and more. After a busy day we finally sit down to eat a spread of Xinjiang food, including local wine, Lamb BBQ skewers, horse meat alongside some menu recommendations.

GJ and ZZH Updates — August 28-September 3
<<< previous week || all posts || following week >>>
This is part of a weekly series collecting updates from and relating to Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan.
This post is not wholly comprehensive and is intended as an overview, links provided lead to further details. Dates are in accordance with China Standard Time, the organization is chronological. My own biases on some things are reflected here. Anything I include that is not concretely known is indicated as such, and you’re welcome to do your own research and draw your own conclusions as you see fit. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or additions. :)
[Glossary of names and terms] [Masterlist of my posts about the situation with Zhang Zhehan]
08-28 → Downy posted a promotional video spoken by Gong Jun, shortly followed by a photo ad.
→ The Instagram posted seven more photos, announcing that the bike trip had come to an end due to the pandemic barring them from their intended destination (as people pointed out as soon as they started...)
→ Go Fighting! episode 8 aired. Gong Jun did not appear in this episode as he was busy with filming. [full episode]
→ The official Zhang Sanjian echo wall Weibo account (not the WeChat) was deactivated along with its two backups.
08-29 → Downy made a post announcing that Gong Jun would be appearing in a livestream the following evening. (1129 kadian)
→ Mengniu posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ The Instagram posted ten more photos from the bike trip.
08-30 → The Word of Honor tag on Weibo was restored. People were able to post in it using Zhang Zhehan’s full name. It is not currently known why this happened, so it’s being taken with a cautious grain of salt.
→ 361° made a post about Bamian mountain near Hengdian only to delete it shortly after.
→ A new Zhang Sanjian echo wall Weibo account that had been created after the others were deactivated was deactivated.
→ The Instagram posted ten pictures, now of a hiking trip.
→ A (pre-recorded) livestream for Downy featuring Gong Jun was held. [full recording] [written summary] A tag about his outfit got on hotsearch. Fan Observations:   -  Fans collectively lost their minds over him smelling a mannequin’s neck.  -  He mentioned that his cooking ahyi now uses very little oil in his food and that she makes him jianbing.
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted six photos from the livestream.
Tumblr media
→ Downy posted six photos of Gong Jun from the livestream.
→ BAZAAR released a teaser image (1129 kadian) and video of Gong Jun for their September mini-issue, with the release date 09-02. Captions: “The stream returns to quiet at sunset. I will meet him at 10:00 on September 2 at @MiniBAZAAR, clear the fog, and the leaves will fall.” and “The afterglow of the sunset scatters in the woods, forgetting the passage of time in tranquility.” Fan Observations: In the video, he throws a rock with his left hand. Gong Jun isn’t left-handed, but a certain someone else is.
08-31 →  #GongJun, #龚俊simon, and Junjun trended on Twitter.
→ Yang Yang (the host) posted five photos from the previous day’s livestream.
→ Madame Figaro made a post (1129 kadian) announcing that Gong Jun would be featured on the cover on their September issue, making him the first male star to do so. The magazine will be available on 09-06 between 11:29 and 17:29. (51129 kadian)
→ The tea shop’s online ratings were suspended from being shown because of a violation of platform rules. The exact reason is not currently known, but according to their TOS it’s because of either harrassing, insulting, or impersonating a third party.
→ Kangshifu posted three illustrated ads featuring Gong Jun.
→ The Instagram posted nine photos and a video from the supposed hiking trip.
→ Tangle Teezer announced that their contract with Gong Jun had been renewed, changing his title from China Regional Brand Spokesperson to Brand Spokesperson. Shortly after, Gong Jun posted a promotional video for them to his Xiao Hong Shu, later also posted by Tangle Teezer. [subbed video]
→ MARRSGREEN released a promotional video spoken by Gong Jun.
Tumblr media
09-01 → #GongJun continued to trend on Twitter.
→ Fresh posted a promotional photo featuring Gong Jun.
→ Hsu Fu Chi posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted his schedule for September: brand event on 09-16. Caption: “Autumn is gradually rising, and September is slightly cooler. Boss @ Gong Jun Simon's September itinerary is coming to autumn, I wish everyone a full harvest 😎.”
→ Gong Jun posted four photos of himself from the day of the Downy livestream. Caption: “With the start of school today, I would like to wish everyone ‘upwards everyday’!” This was reposted by Colgate and Downy. He also posted the photos to his Instagram, caption: “Study well, ‘upwards everyday’”
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted four more photos of him. Caption: “New semester, new atmosphere! The small studio is following in the footsteps of boss @ Gong Jun Simon, wishing you all success in your studies, and your wishes will come true!”  Fan Observations:   -  It’s a slight stretch, but the timestamps for both this and his Instagram post can be rearranged into 51129 kadians.  -  The photo that Gong Jun used for his August schedule (posted 07-31) was taken from this photoshoot—he seemingly intentionally waited until August was over to post it. It was pointed out that this photo and one from the other set he posted are very visually similar, but that in the new one his eyes are open.
Tumblr media
→ Dilireba, Gong Jun’s co-star in Legend of AnLe, was featured for BAZAAR magazine. She spoke a bit about working with Gong Jun in her interview for it.
→ The Instagram posted ten more photos from the supposed hiking trip.
09-02 → #GongJun continued to trend on Twitter.
→ QuelleVous posted that flights to Yunnan were booked for 08-03 and 08-07 to fly Zhang Zhehan, Zhang Mama, Xiaoyu, and the two former classmates present for the “bike trip”. She had been informed of this on 08-02 and hired someone to check if any of these people actually showed up—only the former classmates did.
→ BAZAAR posted the cover from their September mini-issue to announce its release. Caption: “At sunset, walking to the depths of the jungle, the waves and rocks reunite in the quiet stream. As long as there is enough love, the long road will not feel lonely. When the sun shines through and the fog dissipates, everything proves that @ Gong Jun Simon has been here. Love can be worth thousands, mighty, rushing.” This was reposted by Gong Jun’s studio with the added caption, “The night is dark, and the fog is broken. Explore the beauty of nature by wandering through the brook forest with boss @ Gong Jun Simon.” Addition 09-05: [translated interview] Addition 09-16: This was reposted by the Legend of AnLe Weibo with the added caption, “Walk to the end of the water and look at the running water. Aiming for the Quartet, knowing Han Ye.” Fan Observation: The fog imagery has been a recurring theme throughout the year.
Tumblr media
BAZAAR later released another teaser video, caption: “The waterfall returns to silence, just like all encounters and partings.” This was followed by a post of eleven more photos, caption, “The hazy flying leaves in the fog are like ripples on the water surface in the night, disappearing and appearing from time to time. In the afterglow of the sunset, we walked deep into the forest. Between the light and the dark, follow the calm steps of @ Gong Jun Simon, and we wait for the dawn together.” Fan Observation: He has a “mosquito bite” on his hip in one photo.
→ Gong Jun posted six of the photos to his personal Weibo. Caption: “River walk at night, thank you for the invitation @ 小丽BAZAAR” His studio reposted this with the added caption, “The night is quiet, and the autumn colors are getting darker. Take a stroll along the stream with boss @ Gong Jun Simon and feel the cool autumn feeling.”
He later also posted seven of the photos to his Xiao Hong Shu, caption “The advantage of doing a photoshoot at night is! There are many mosquito bites on my body...”, and five to his Instagram, caption “Autumn mood”
→ LockNLock posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun. The caption includes “At the beginning of September, I want to live a normal life ‘upwards everyday’, and I want to experience more wonderful and interesting daily life to drink and talk 🥳 Go to see the mountains and see the sea 🌊 To meet the only one who is heartbroken, and to discover the pleasures of a comfortable life with three meals.”
→ #GongJun and Junjun trended on Twitter.
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted a douyin of behind the scenes footage from the photoshoot, caption: “Boss Gong Jun walking slowly at the stream, what accompanies the descending waterfall beside him is the leisurely ease in that moment” [quoted translation]
→ Youku advertised that their official Word of Honor figurines had been put on 50% off discount. Shockingly (sarcasm), people responded negatively to them once again trying to profit off Zhang Zhehan’s image while refusing to use his name or acknowledge what has happened.
→ BAZAAR posted a promotional video for the issue, caption: “Hidden behind the waterfall and water curtain, are the flowers and plants blooming resolutely among the cliffs in the fog, day and night, condensing in silence and precipitating in the noise, just like @ Gong Jun Simon's appearance in front of the camera.” [subbed video]
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted a behind the scenes photo of him drawing the design for a mooncake he made for BAZAAR. Caption: “Boss @ Gong Jun Simon in serious creation mode 😎”
→ BAZAAR posted another promotional video, caption: “The forest is quiet and foggy. At sunset, among the shadows of the sea of trees, we are looking for the figure of @ Gong Jun Simon in nature.” They later posted a video of Gong Jun and Dilireba asking each other five questions each. [subbed video]
→ 361° posted two photo ads featuring Gong Jun for their new line.
→ People’s Daily published an article saying that the CAC has started a three month crackdown on rumors and false information, calling for platforms to label, deter, and refute false rumors and punish accounts spreading them; accounts cannot avoid punishment by deleting posts. This is non-retroactive.
→ The Instagram posted five more photos from the supposed hiking trip.
09-03 → #GongJun continued to trend on Twitter, #WordofHonor trended.
→ LockNLock posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun. (1129 kadian)
→ QuelleVous posted that the Shanghai body double (the one at the driving range on 06-12) is surnamed Chen and is from the same village as the tea shop Chens. There is only one Shanghai body double.
→ The Instagram posted a video from the supposed hiking trip.
→ Addition 09-04: Gong Jun was announced as a guest for an upcoming Louis Vuitton men’s fashion show.
→ QuelleVous posted an exposé about a man claiming to be Zhang Zhehan’s uncle who posted an essay on 2021-07-17 “defending” him that resulted in a number of malicious rumors. The man has no relation to Zhang Zhehan, lied about his professional history, and has connections to Songcheng. Followups: [1] [2]

[Tutorial] How to Buy China Harper's Bazaar Digital Magazine via WeChat Mini Apps if You Don't Have WeChat Pay
Tumblr media
I don’t know who needs this, but I thought I’d share a few tips to my fellow CQL and SHL fans if you guys want to purchase these magazines featuring our beloved WangXian and WenZhou actors. ^^
What you'll need:
A functioning WeChat Apps
A trusted Taobao Agent
The price of each magazine is usually ¥6 (around $1).
Step 1
Go to Taobao and search for:
时尚芭莎 陈情令 for Harper’s Bazaar x The Untamed
时尚芭莎 山河令 for Harper’s Bazaar x Shan He Ling
For convenience sake, I’m going to provide the link to both CQL and SHL digital magazines here:
Harper’s Bazaar x The Untamed
Harper’s Bazaar x Shan He Ling
Also, I’d like to let you know that this tutorial works for any China Harper’s Bazaar Digital Magazine. Just go to Taobao and look for the magazine you want to buy.
Anyway, follow these steps to get the purchase link of said item.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 2
Once you get the link, send it to your trusted Taobao Agent. I personally have a friend who’s running this service (Wei2Bunny@Twitter), but if you already have a Taobao Agent that you know, feel free to use their service.
Also, if you have Alipay or Debit/Credit Card that can be connected to Taobao, you can go ahead and purchase it on your own.
Either way, you or your agent will receive a message like this once they purchased the magazine from that link. If you purchased it via agent, have them send this code to you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 3
Open WeChat and from the bottom menu, pick "Discover" then choose "Mini Programs".
Tumblr media
Use the Search Bar on top to look for Harper's Bazaar Mini Programs: 时尚芭莎明星电子刊
Tumblr media
Open this Mini Programs.
Tumblr media
Step 4 (optional)
You can pick click the "Three Dots" symbol on top of the Mini Programs and choose "Add to Favorites" so it will be easier for you to find this Mini Programs later.
Tumblr media
Step 5
Once inside the Mini Programs, you can search manually for any digital magazine you want to buy.
Fortunately, for Shan He Ling and The Untamed magazines, they are both featured in Top 10, so you can just scroll down and click on the magazine cover.
Tumblr media
If you want to try manual search, the easiest way is to input the featured celebrity's name (in Hanzi) to the Search Bar, for example: 肖战 (Xiao Zhan), 张哲瀚 (Zhang Zhehan).
It will then show you a list of magazines featuring said celebrity that you can pick.
Step 6
Once you click on the magazine cover, you will see 2 (two) choices:
Tumblr media
On the left is 开始阅读 (Start Reading).
On the right is 点击订阅 (Click to Subscribe).
If you have WeChat Pay or Debit/Credit Card that can be connected to your WeChat apps, of course you can simply click the RIGHT option to buy directly there instead of going through roundabout way by purchasing the code via Taobao.
But most international users don't have that so choose the LEFT option.
Step 7
Once you click the LEFT option, you will be prompted to input a code.
Tumblr media
Go ahead and type in the code you received from your Taobao Agent. Afterwards, click the green check mark.
Tumblr media
That's it! You've successfully purchased the magazine. :D
Don't forget to turn on your speakers or use headphones because most of these magazines have background music.
By the way, you can click that rightmost tab in your Harper’s Bazaar Mini Programs (see above picture) to see all magazines that you owned.
Once again, this tutorial works for any China Harper’s Bazaar Digital Magazine. You only need to look for the one you wish to purchase.
Hope that helps. :)

Totally agree with your thoughts on how different Wu Lei & Reba are from their TLB characters! I was especially impressed with how serious they took their role - and you're right Wu Lei's interviews and live streams with Reba feel like watching a different him, the "Sun"-like him. Given how committed they were to doing their characters justice, I wonder whether the fact that Wu Lei calls Reba without "jie" is something they both agreed on at the beginning to fall quicker into the dynamic...
IMO, it couldn’t have been a mutual agreement.
The interesting thing is that they’ve known each other for many years and they’ve consistently run into each other at events. We don’t really know if he used to call her “jie” and stopped at some point.
In 2017 they did a photo shoot and mini movie in Tokyo for Harper’s Bazaar China. She (and many other celeb friends) also sent him a video message for his 18th birthday. In 2018 they were on an episode of Happy Camp together. In 2019 they filmed another program together for CCTV. Later in 2019 he sent flowers to her birthday event addressed to “Reba”. At the TLB booting ceremony, they already seemed quite friendly with each other.
I heard somewhere that there’s a fancam of him saying “Reba jie” at the CCTV event but I couldn’t find it. In any case, they didn’t know each other super well at the time and there were a lot of older people there (like, people that Wu Lei could be calling auntie and uncle) so it wouldn’t surprise me if he did call her “jie” at that event. We also know he has sent flowers for another actress’s birthday addressed to “jie”, and he sent flowers to just “Reba” before TLB, so it’s definitely his own choice not to call her “jie”.
Plus, there were a few times when she called him “Wu Lei di di” (di di = younger brother), but that was after TLB had started filming, and she always said it in a lighthearted joking way. She has also brought up the age gap several times, but if she brings it up around him he tends to ignore it or change the topic. She has also said that he feels like an older brother because of his height and how he takes care of people.
My feeling is that they never discussed it. She just isn’t a “jie” to him.

Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of February 7 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.

These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Reminder: December schedule posts are due by the end of January 7 KST. Please do not post schedule posts in the fmdschedule tag.
OVERALL COMPANY
Dimensions will be hosting their usual beginning of the year meeting headed by Choi Dongwook this month, as well as the now-normal consultations on creative and music direction. Choi Dongwook will not be present in the directional meetings this year again. The whole company meeting will largely be congratulatory toward the company’s standout acts over the past year or so (namely Dimensions Soloist 3, Unity, and Lucid), but there will be mentions for general plans of all groups and soloists.
Important dates:
January 20: Meeting for company artists and those who work directly with them (managers, PR, etc.) headed by creative director Choi Dongwook. Dimensions Entertainment’s goal statements and overall plans for 2021 will be delivered.
Various dates: In a tradition started in 2018 by creative director Choi Dongwook, all artists will meet with in-house producers and artist and repertoire department representatives to discuss the styles of music and concepts they’d like to pursue in 2020. Choi Dongwook himself will not be present. No promises are made that their wishes will be met, but the intent is to keep open a clear line of communication.
DIMENSIONS SOLOIST 1
After filming the special video and interview last month, it will be released onto YouTube near the middle of January. Overall, she’s still in a resting period after her last comeback, but she will be alerted by management that she’s to film another video for YouTube, this time a sponsored food delivery mukbang video where she’ll eat while talking to her staff about what kinds of schedules she’d like to pursue for the new year. The date of the filming can be worked around her personal schedule.
Important dates:
January 20: Release of “Borderline” special video + interview.
DIMENSIONS SOLOIST 2
His comeback has been internally confirmed for March now that everything is recorded and his team has finished their conceptualization for the comeback. It sticks to Dimensions’ promise of a first quarter comeback, even if by as close a call as they could make it. Preparation for his comeback this month involves shooting his teaser photos and his album photobook while he continues to practice his live performance of his title track.
Important dates:
January 11: Teaser photo and photo book shoot day one.
January 12: Photo book shoot day two.
DIMENSIONS SOLOIST 3
It’s the last month of award season, which means three more performances of her one released single. Her performances have been received well and it’s only garnered her more attention from the public and anticipation for her next comeback. Dimensions is dedicated more resources than usual for a digital single comeback for her next comeback, and she’ll shoot the comeback teaser photos as well as the comeback M/V this month as she finishes preparing to release “Rain” early next month.
Important dates:
January 9: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day One at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: BC Soloist 1, BEE, Lucid, Gold Star Soloist 1).
January 12: Comeback teaser photo shoot.
January 13: Performance at Gaon Chart Music Awards at Jamsil Arena (also performing: Decipher, BEE, MARS, Lucid).
January 14: “Rain” M/V filming.
January 31: Performance at Seoul Music Awards at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: Decipher, 2BEE, WISH, Alien, MARS, Lucid).
GAL.ACTIC
Management seems to have narrowed in on a spring comeback for Gal.actic so that they can try to book the group some college festivals. They won’t begin to record for the comeback until next month, though, so, this month, the members instead have two photo shoots for inside spreads in the March issues of two different magazines.
Important dates:
January 19: Photo shoot for Figaro’s March issue.
January 22: Photo shoot for Dazed Korea’s March issue.
ALIEN
Alien wraps up their awards season with performances at the second day of the Golden Disk Awards along with one at the Seoul Music Awards at the very end of the month. Their all-English album releases at the end of the month as well, but there’s not much immediate promotion Dimensions plans for it beyond a few radio interviews due to the amount of promotion they’ve done leading up to it. Instead, the Alien members are asked to prioritize preparing for their Korean comeback by practicing the choreography [2] and going in for fittings.
Important dates:
January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, MARS, 7ROPHY, Impulse, Origin).
January 21: M/V and stage outfit fittings.
January 29: Release of All About Luv English album.
January 31: Performance at Seoul Music Awards at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: Decipher, 2BEE, WISH, Dimensions Soloist 3, Lucid).
MARS
"Chained Up” earns MARS performances at the Golden Disk Awards day two, the Gaon Chart Music Awards, and the Seoul Music Awards. They’ll be practicing for those ahead of time, but, for the most part, the priority this month is preparing for their Japanese comeback. This involves fittings as well as filming the music video, as continue to practice their performance for that in advance.
Important dates:
January 8: M/V wardrobe fittings.
January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, Alien, 7ROPHY, Impulse, Origin).
January 13: Performance at Gaon Chart Music Awards at Jamsil Arena (also performing: Decipher, BEE, Dimensions Soloist 3, Lucid).
January 23: “Depend On Me” M/V filming.
January 31: Performance at Seoul Music Awards at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: Decipher, 2BEE, WISH, Dimensions Soloist 3, Alien, Lucid).
7ROPHY
7ROPHY does one more awards show performance with “Lion” at the second day of the Golden Disk Awards, but they’re busier than that behind the scenes as they start to prepare for a March comeback. It’s a slightly shorter time to prepare than the members usually get, but Dimensions wants to capitalize on the renewal of interest “Lion” and Queendom garnered after their earlier 2020 releases didn’t do as well, so they’ll be in the studio to record for the release of their next mini-album. Word has it Dimensions really wants to push 7ROPHY this year to see if they can achieve a consistent level of success and, if they don’t, it may spell being put on the backburner by the company for the foreseeable future.
Important dates:
January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, Alien, MARS, Impulse, Origin).
UNITY
As a congratulations for a job well-down in 2020, January is largely a break month (save for members’ individual schedules) for Unity before they jump into recording for their next comeback next month. From talk among management, it isn’t likely the members will get such a big break for the rest of the year, so they’re told to enjoy it while they can. The only schedule requirement they’ll have this month is to film and, in some cases record in the studio, for videos for their YouTube channel. Management has given them each the option of choosing a cover song, a cover dance, an ASMR video, or a vlog. (admin note: For covers, please don’t use specific cover videos from NCT Music / NCT Dance, since those may be used as specific schedules in the future!)
Important dates:
N/A
   ↳ CHAMPION
The members of the sub-unit are told by management that they won’t comeback until the second half of the year, but they do have a concert at Tokyo Dome scheduled in the spring and, this month, they’ll go in to do a photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar China together.
Important dates:
January 3: Photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar China’s February issue.
LUCID
Their 2020 success nets them three more awards show performances before the rush of shows comes to an end. Besides rehearsal for their performances and fittings for their red carpet outfits for the shows, it’s the final full month of preparation for their comeback, so they have a lot going on for that as well. Practicing their choreography, M/V filming and photo shoots take up the bulk of those preparations this month, plus fittings.
Important dates:
January 8: M/V and stage outfit fittings.
January 9: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day One at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: BC Soloist 1, BEE, Dimensions Soloist 3, Gold Star Soloist 1).
January 13: Performance at Gaon Chart Music Awards at Jamsil Arena (also performing: Decipher, BEE, Dimensions Soloist 3, MARS).
January 14: Comeback teaser photo and photo book shoot.
January 25: “Fingertip” M/V filming.
January 31: Performance at Seoul Music Awards at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: Decipher, 2BEE, WISH, Dimensions Soloist 3, Alien, MARS).

Fishkeeping in Asia
youtube
Chinese aquarium markets have the vibe of a silk road bazaar. You rarely see what you and I call fish stores. Instead, you see rows of vendors in underground alleys, each specializing in a specific species or equipment set. Men selling aquascaping rock, women holding up lengths of Malaysian driftwood. You’ve got your discus guys, your cichlid hawkers, and then those who deal in Asian Arowana—the last dragons in China. My girlfriend—Shelly—lives with me in Shenzhen, and she insisted on coming to Honghu Aquarium market. She worried I wouldn’t say “有点贵” forcefully enough. (Translation: “it’s too expensive.” A phrase you must repeat constantly when haggling in China.) I speak Chinese at the level of a semi-intelligent six-year-old. So I was happy to let Shelly do the talking. She has a passion for bargaining, even on things with set prices—like restaurant menus. I once heard her negotiating the price of noodles. Our fishkeeping brethren in China build their tanks upside down. They put the sump on top of the aquarium instead of beneath it. Generally, this sump covers the full length of the hood and doubles as a lid. Many Chinese fish keepers I know live in fear their fish will jump. That heavy sump gives them peace of mind. If a Super Red jumps, that’s a lot of money flopping on the floor. However, many Chinese aquarists lean toward the opposite extreme. They leave their tanks uncovered out of superstition—the fish might need to send them a message one day. Every fish seller in China tells the story of the Malaysian businessman and his Asian arowana. In the story, the man and his fish share a special bond. One day, a business associate invited him to make a risky investment. The day before closing the deal, the arowana jumped out and died on the floor. He believed the fish killed itself to prevent the deal. A few months later the company he’d considered investing in folded. This story has many variations—sometimes the man is Japanese, sometimes it’s a Super Red, but the moral remains the same. The fish saved the man’s business. Here, anything red demands a higher price. Pigeon blood discus, chili reds, red mushroom coral, even arapaima with especially vibrant tails. The color is embedded in China’s cultural psyche. During Spring Festival, people exchange red packets of money and hang red paper cuttings on their doorways. In traditional weddings, Chinese brides don’t wear white, they wear red. When I first moved to China four years ago, I bought an upside-down aquarium. For freshwater, these are better than any Western-style aquarium. The pump pulls water from the bottom, zips it to the mini-sump, and then it flows back in. A clean and efficient system, perfect for a bare bottom tank. However, I wanted to keep coral this time and needed a Western-style setup. Shelly finagled, bargained, and then feigned a walkaway. By the end of it, the vendor offered us a 100-liter system for 800 yuan. (About $125 USD.) It included the tank, light, stand, sump, and pump. I would've preferred a larger aquarium, but I have limited space. Shelly and I live in a studio. Additionally, I prefer glass aquariums. Call me old fashioned, but glass just feels better. But we have to carry it to the fifth floor (no elevator), so I decided acrylic was more pragmatic. I paid while Shelly told the vendor we’d pick it up next week. Later that evening, while ambling Shenzhen’s alleyways, I stumbled into one of those rare standalone fish stores. Except for the labels written in Chinese and the Buddhist shrine in the corner, it reminded me of an American LFS. The owner—who I call Mr. Li—welcomed me into his shop. He soon offered me a great deal on a used 100-liter cube. 300 yuan—about $45—for the tank, stand, sump, and pump. When I heard the price, I wanted it. But I'd already promised my money to another. I thanked Mr. Li and left his store. I tried to forget the cube. It was heavy, impractical, and didn’t come with a light. But it was glass, high-quality, and perfect for a nano reef. Shelly messaged the vendor in Honghu to request a refund. When they returned my money, I went straight to Mr. Li to purchase the cube. That trip became the subject of my first video. Afterward, I collected all the bits and bobs needed for the setup. Mr. Li ordered the light—a Chinese brand called Sunpolar. It’s a fine piece of equipment with this quirky thing called “lighting mode." Hit that button and it flashes like a strobe light. I ordered the rest of my gear off Taobao, China’s equivalent to Amazon. I ordered a Sunsun powerhead, an Aquasyncro protein skimmer, and a heater. I'm unsure what brand —it's in Chinese. People hate on Chinese made stuff, but everything I bought, especially the protein skimmer, was top notch. It fits perfectly in my five-gallon sump. As for the powerhead, you get a lot of flow for $3. When was the last time you got a powerhead that cheap? After filling it, I visited Mr. Li to buy live rock. (I had installed a RO/DI filter under my sink and used a Chinese brand of reef salt.) Mr. Li sold cured rock for about $1.25 a pound. I purchased ten kilos in total. When I told Shelly how much I paid, she said, “just for rocks?”
In my next post, I will go discuss my plans for training the fish, and the coral I bought for the aquarium.
