Small post for Nothing Gold Can Stay Ep 21

RIP SHIT HIT THE FAN ONCE AGAIN!!!!!!

I guess this is truly going to be a started from the bottom story ;_;

I know this show came first, but I’m getting Story of Minglan vibes, except the people in this show are a lot more cruel because Zhou Ying has never pretended to be meek as Minglan did.

Zheng Furen isn’t an evil woman, she’s just around a lot of snakes who have ulterior motives who take advantage of her easily swayed nature.

I know things are going to get better, but man, my heart rate is really going up!!!!!!!! I really need to binge at this point because I need to get to when things get better!!!!!!!!!

Thank goodness for Wu Ze and Yi ;_; Wu Yi is the only person in the entire Wu family who has tried to get to know her. And Wu Ze, though he doesn’t know Zhou Ying very well, he is pretty level headed, even more than his own dad. Even when the uncles were talking about “giving” a son to Wu Weiwen, Wu Ze was like “why would you do that, he literally just lost his son?!”

And of course we also have Hu Yongmei who know has “proof” that Zhou Ying is an evil person :/

As for the other families, I don’t think they care too much. Du Mingli just thought it was interesting. Shen Laoban won’t care. Funnily enough, Shen Xingyi might probably be able to help her. He knows first hand how Zhou Ying and Wu Pin were deeply in love. And he does hate that Zhou Ying had the upper hand over him, but we see his attitudes changing. When he found out that Zhou Ying was the head of the Wu family and with child, he was surprised, but he also had sort of a “good for her” attitude, knowing that she had the capability to achieve great things.

Zhou Ying’s not going to die, of course, she’s our main character. But she’s going to have to start from nothing. She’s going to build herself back up (including handling a business, methinks), and she’s going to get revenge.

So until Zhou Ying gets back on her feet, you’ll see me rage blogging some more!! >.<

During this scene, Shen Xingyi is ‘politely’ asking Dou Mingli to correct the ‘request’ he made of their company product. One of the things the director seems to use a lot in relation to Dou Mingli are the sound effects from kun opera (known as kunqu).

The best I can do is recognize the sounds, but I imagine Dou Mingli’s representation in that way is thematic in some way. The actor, Yu Haoming, seems to have studied a bit of kunqu theater, at least; his careful gestures and motions and soft voice remind me of the elegance of the actors in kunqu.

Thoughts up to Nothing Gold Can Stay Ep 15

- I vaguely remember hearing that in this drama, Sun Li’s character’s husband would die, but I kind of forgot about it or thought it would happen much later. But anyway, I can admit that Wu Pin’s death really took me by surprise. 

- From a narrative standpoint, now that Wu Pin is out of the story, Zhou Ying now must do all of the heavy lifting herself. Before, Wu Pin was always sticking up in front of his parents, against Shen Xingyi, against Hu Yongmei. But now he’s not there anymore.

- That being said, I do think that Wu Weiwen and his wife are more convinced of Zhou Ying’s sincerity. Though Zhou Laosi is a huge headache, I think that Wu Weiwen understands that Zhou Ying is sharp, and that’s why he’s allowed her to join in on the meetings. Even before she married into the family, he allowed her to join the classes, a hint that he valued her mind.

- Back to the point about heavy lifting. Wu Pin used to do all of the heavy lifting because he was the representative of their nuclear family of him and his wife. But now that he’s dead, Zhou Ying will become the representative of the family of Wu Dashaoye. 

- I thought that Zhou Ying losing her appetite for sweet things was a hint that she was pregnant. I think Wu Weiwen and his wife were softening up towards Zhou Ying but if she’s pregnant, I think they’d soften up to her even more.

- Du Mingli is the supreme shit stirrer in all of this. What an evil, evil man. But what are his motives? I’m not really sure. Truth be told, I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the business dealings. But otherwise, I also know that he has a thing for Hu Yongmei.

- Hu Zhicun literally can’t think for himself. He allowed his entire life to be flipped upside down because of something some dude he just met said. Du Mingli claimed that the Hu family had been a saviour to him once but he handwaves it away. And Hu Zhicun doesn’t even think to question it. The first time he met with Du Mingli was when Hu Yongmei was going to be married into the Wu family. The second time he met Du Mingli was to do with the “false stock” that was supposedly found. When Du Mingli visited Hu Zhicun about this, Hu Zhicun explicitly acknowledged that the last time he’d listened to Du Mingli, his words had ruined his life and his relationships AND YET HE CONTINUED TO LISTEN TO HIM!!!!!!!! Hu Zhicun, the most frustrating man ever.

- We saw a bit of catty behaviour from Hu Yongmei towards Zhou Ying briefly. Even though Wu Pin was in love with Zhou Ying and had expressed to Hu Yongmei that Zhou Ying was now his wife, she would not take the goddamn hint. Now that Wu Pin is dead, I wonder if Hu Yongmei will blame his death on Zhou Ying. In any case, their relationship began on bad terms and it’ll get worse before it gets better. Seeing as how Du Mingli is so smitten with her, and how much Hu Zhicun trusts him, I can see her marrying him. The two of them together would probably unleash more havoc on the Wu family.

- The relationship between the Shen and Wu families right now is also very complex. Mostly, the Shen family thinks that the Wu family killed Shen Yuesheng, and Shen Xingyi being the petty young master that he is won’t accept that Zhou Ying got the better of him. Meanwhile, the Wu family haven’t bothered to defend themselves because they know that Shen Sihai would not listen. The Shen family is also incredibly frustrating, every single member. They’re all so goddamn stubborn, and they keep thinking that Zhao Baishi was bribed. Anyway, it’s hinted that Zha Kun, Du Mingli’s manservant, was the one who killed Shen Yuesheng, so again, he is the one stirring the pot.

- There’s also that subplot about Sun Yongchuan (the guy who manages the warehouse/shop) embezzling money, in a plot with one of the wives of the Wu family who is his cousin/implied lover. Before, Sun Yongchuan and Liu Furen had been worried that Wu Pin were close to finding out that they’d embezzled money. Sun Yongchuan wanted to leave but Liu Furen didn’t want to. I think it would have been especially difficult for her to because she has a son. Now that Wu Pin is dead, I guess they can breathe easy. Liu Furen had paid Baolai to be her inside man, but I’m not sure whether Baolai had an active part in Wu Pin’s death, or whether he was just a spy. In any case, this story line will come back again, and I’m excited to see how they’ll be exposed.

- Wu Yu and his mother (Liu Furen) have also been making moves, trying to cozy up to Wu Weiwen, and I think that Zhou Ying will have to fend them off, especially if she has a child.

- There are still 59 episodes so there is A LOT of story still to go. The thing about these long stories (when well written) is that I can almost always expect the antagonists to get justice served to them. This show started off with the Wu family and Wu Pin’s family specifically being targeted from all sides and I am so excited to see how those people get taken down.

- Also, I gotta say, the pacing in this drama is really good. Something happens every episode, and this is the first time in a while that I’ve really found myself binging a few episodes at a time.
