Vacations
Names (L to R): Jake Johnson, Joseph Van Lier, Nate Delizzotti, Campbell Burns
Hometown: Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia
First kiss:
Jake: Horrifying. Scary, scary
Joseph: Character building
Nate: Too much tongue
Campbell: Exciting
What you'd write in each other's yearbooks:
Nate: Like a boss
Joseph: Respect, dignity, power
Jake: Thanks for the year, be all you can be.
2000's teen movie freeze frame epilogue:
Nate: It would probably be like, Nate…jail.
Joseph: Joey proved the haters wrong
Jake: Jake stumbled around for many years and then found the love of their lives.
Campbell: Campbell went on to be a rock star.
Songs written in high school that you'd want to play now:
Campbell: Funnily enough, I first started posting songs on Tumblr. It was my first outlet. So it's kind of weird to being here all these years later because it felt like my own little world and I was like, "I'm pouring my heart out, but only two or three of my friends are going to see it." It felt safe because I didn't want to just go straight to YouTube. I wasn't ready for that.
Nate: He wasn’t ready for the fame.
Jake: There’s a safe anonymity to Tumblr.
Campbell: That's kind of how I met Jake because I'd post my songs and he would slide into my DMs, my inbox.
Jake: you slid into my DMs, Campbell.
Put one of your songs in a high school movie:
Joseph: I just immediately think of Looking for Alibrandi or The Breakfast Club.
Nate: Heathers. Maybe Mad Max Fury Road?
Jake: I like Heathers. Mine would be Sixteen Candles. And the whole world would be like Mad Max Fury Road or something.
Campbell: Probably "Midwest" as the song.
Jake: I like "Steady" for Sixteen Candles.

Three generations of Sisko men gathered close for a jambalaya dinner in Ben's ancient Bajoran lightship, as illustrated by celebrated science fiction writer, Benny Russell. Russell keeps a souvenir baseball on his desk, signed by the legendary Willie Hawkins. In the corner, Russell stashes the sketch that gave him the inspiration for this family's story: space station Deep Space Nine.
Deep Space Nine is my favorite Trek. It has nuanced, 3-dimensional characters who become part of the show's world over the course of 7 seasons. There are some off plot lines here and there but for the most part, the story seems to write itself. I've written at length on here about how much I love Captain Benjamin Sisko and I'd like to share a project of mine I did for a class (I have so far managed to fit Star Trek into three separate final projects for three separate classes, one of which I already posted about here).
Through the lens of Sisko's character, I wanted to examine Deep Space Nine's portrayal of Black masculinity, fatherhood and Afrofuturism with three episodes (although one's a two-parter): "Homefront" (Part I), "Paradise Lost" (Part II), "Explorers" (which I made a post about here) and "Far Beyond the Stars". Initially, the idea was to focus on Ben's fatherhood to Jake, how from the viewer's side of the screen, the two of them break down numerous racial stereotypes around Black men, an important thing to remember with DS9's debut not being far removed from the end of the Reagan Administration, from which sprung stereotypes of "absent Black fathers" and "welfare queens." As I continued with this project, I found I also wanted to analyze how Sisko's relationship with his own father informs his parenting of Jake and what it means to have three generations of Siskos in one room, on one planet. That was how I got "Explores" and "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" in there, as I wanted to showcase episodes that focus on these exact dynamics.
"Far Beyond the Stars" offers a window into Earth's history as a commentary on racism within creative circles and the systemic racism that shapes the world we live in today and the world of Deep Space Nine. It not only invites viewers into the life of Benny Russell, a Black science fiction writer from the 1950s, but also invites us to consider the link between the future he envisioned of the life that Sisko leads in the 24th century as a Black spaceship/space station captain, father, son, husband and cook who carries the weight of his ancestors' legacy on his shoulders and the reality Russell himself lives in day by day. "You are the dreamer and the dream" has a whole lot more gravity to it when you recognize it as less of an obvious observation of what we've known and been shown throughout the episode (Avery Brooks plays both Sisko and Russell) and more of a nod to the Black future that Sisko inhabits and that Russell dreams of. As a creation of Benny Russell, Sisko and his family are Afrofuturism in a nutshell, carrying on the cultures, stories and knowledge of their ancestors as they live their lives in a future those ancestors imagined and built. Furthermore, Benny Russell's Deep Space Nine is not only important because it features a Black space station captain but also because it encapsulates a fragment of Russell's drive to write his own stories for himself and his Black readers, to breathe life into his creations, to share his art in the ways that he wants to. To cherish his experiences and ideas and imagination and reality through the creative process of putting pen to paper, stamping ink to page, painting scenes to canvas.
The DS9 finale was originally going to see Benny Russell wistfully wandering the promenade alone and implicate him as the creator of not just the story of Deep Space Nine, but of the Star Trek franchise as a whole. Obviously, this concept did not make the cut, but Strange New Worlds' "Elysium Kingdom" follows another story written by Russell, solidifying him as a real person who lived in the 20th century within the Star Trek universe and who presumably continued to write stories that got published after the events of "Shadows and Symbols".
Comprised of screenshots from "Explorers", "Homefront", "Paradise Lost", "Far Beyond the Stars", "Shadows and Symbols" and "Civil Defense" - in which Dukat flicks Sisko's baseball off his desk - (and also a picture of a random coffee table taken by me because we see surprisingly very little of Benny's desk), the collage above is my humble attempt to honor Benny Russell and his creative vision.

Sleepy Baby: Our Song
a/n: I put my 90s country playlist on shuffle and wrote for songs that came up. This isn’t super connected to whatever plot I have going on in the main story. It's more of a series of vignettes.
Pairing: Jake “Hangman” Seresin / Reader
Warnings: None, 90s Country
Word Count: 700 ish
Summary: Jake listens to 90s country music.
Masterlist
You roll your eyes as Jake pairs his phone up to the Bluetooth speaker in his kitchen. Jake rarely listens to music from this century. He mostly switches between classic rock playlists and ‘90s country and lately it has been trending country. As someone who grew up listening to mostly Top 40 music you were not familiar with most of the songs he played. Despite your unfamiliarity with the genre it was growing on you. Every song you learn to love is connected to memories of Jake.
Jake sings a lot. It was something you noticed in your time with him. Not around his coworkers, but he sings around you often. He is able to remember the words and cadence to songs in a way that you would never be able to. When you commented on the blueness of the sky Jake jumped into singing, “Here she comes a walkin’ talkin’ true love, saying I’ve been looking for you love, surprise your new love has arrived, out of the blue clear sky,” all the while taking your hand and twirling you before pulling you into a kiss. At your slightly baffled expression he adds, “George Strait’s Blue Clear Sky.” He grins, “don’t worry Darlin’ I’ll convert you to a follower of King George.”
There was the disastrous attempt to teach you line dancing to Brooks and Dunn’s Boot Scootin’ Boogie on western night at some bar you don’t remember the name of. Alcohol was a factor in how many times you stumbled giggling into Jake as he patiently caught you and steadied you for the next attempt. When you had tried again, sober this time, on your back deck on a Sunday afternoon you were much more coordinated and he informed you that he would be willing to take you line dancing when you went to meet his family in Texas.
John Michael Montgomery’s Sold is Jake's song for you. Every time it plays he will sing the whole song to you, keeping up to the fast lyrics with an exaggerated twang in his voice. “Jake, I don't exactly match the description of the women in the song,” you tell him laughing. “Doesn't matter, you’re a ten,” he tells you. “This was me when I met you. You’re it for me Darlin’, I’m sold.”
You think about slow dancing in Jake’s kitchen every time you hear Garth Brooks’ The Dance. It’s late and most of the lights are off. Your one hand is clasped in his and the other is playing with the hairs at the nape of his neck. Jake's hand on your lower back is holding you close to him as you sway to the music. Jake’s soft humming is a rumble as you rest your head on his chest and he presses a soft kiss to the top of your head.
Jake singing, “I put a big down payment on that itty bitty diamond ring,” to Diamond Rio’s Unbelievable as he drives makes you pause. At the conviction in his voice you turn and stare at him. Neither of you have said ‘I love you’ yet, even though Jake has already declared that you would be getting married. He catches your eye and winks before turning back to look at the road. You narrow your eyes watching him sing along before deciding you are jumping to conclusions. Probably.
You had always listened to Shania Twain and her songs took a new meaning to you. It was hard for you to miss the fact that Jake perfectly personified the lyrics to Any Man of Mine. You have long since admitted to yourself that you were falling hard and fast for Jake. His casual certainty that your relationship was long term was simultaneously perplexing and exasperating, but mostly it was endearing. He made your heartbeat quicken with a wink one moment and could relax you with a hug the next. He made you feel safe.
You don't have one song to remind you of your relationship, you have an entire decade of a genre, and you still don’t know what song you will dance to at your wedding.

bmc kids and the weird kid properties they were obsessed with
jeremy was a warrior cats kid. this may not be canon in everyone elses brain but it is in mine. he's a weird little fucked up kid who loves cats, what else would he be into?
michael was a five nights at freddy's kid and definitely tried making himself a costume for halloween and made jeremy cry with it. he still goes hard to the living tombstone.
christine was REALLY into homestuck. like cosplay fanfic the whole nine yards. she sometimes makes references to it and then stares directly into people's eyes to see them squirm.
brooke was a tinkerbell movies kid and still loves watching them to this day. she's a huge rosetta fan and will go into depth about it. she also thinks lord milori is hot.
jake was a transformers kid and i have no other information other than that and i think i'm correct.
rich was, in fact, a beyblades kid. he still kept all of them in a little box under his bed and will go feral if someone lets him talk about it.
chloe was super into littlest pet shop. she was in fact the maker of a terrible lps movie about drama a la mean girls but it never took off and she'll swear brooke to secrecy about it for years.
jenna was the percy jackson kid of the group and was really really into it because she too was a neurodivergent kid with only one parent. (if asked, she'd want to be a child of hermes and a hunter of artemis.)

Don’t imagine the SAS in highschool, dont do it, DON’T-! ........I did it.
The principal's son David Stirling who wants to live up to the family name but struggles in school.
And his rowdy crush Eve.
Paddy is flying in and out of juvie more frequently than he is shagging his long-haired boyfriend.
And Augustin is not too happy about either of those things.
This is the second time Dave gets busted while smoking weed by the dumpsters.
Reggie-best-in-the-football-team-Seekings.
Straight A-student Johnny.
Mike before puberty hit him like a fucking train. All the girls( and most boys) at school have a crush on him.
Jock Lewis is secretly making bombs with stuff he steals from the lab in the school cellar.
Pat Riley is good with a sewing machine and works part time as a police officer though there are some who claims they have seen him smoking weed with Dave Kershaw by the dumpsters, but those are just rumours ofc.
And what list of mine would be complete without my Trash prince Walter Essner aka Mr Real Thing having beef with someone in the mens-room( or something, I have no fucking clue what is about to go down here)
Actors, media and characters. Connor Swindells - Sex Education ( Adam Groff)
Sofia Boutella - Atomic Blonde (Delphine)
Jack O’Connell - Starred Up ( Eric Love)
César Domboy - The Walk ( Jeff/Jean)
Bobby Schofield - The Walk-In ( Matthew Hankinson)
Theo Barklem Biggs - The First Team( Petey Brooks)
Jacob McCarthy - The Drummer And the Keeper (Christopher)
Tom Glynn Carney - The Last Post (Tony Armstrong)
Alfie Allen - How to Build A Girl (John Kite)
Jacob Ifan - Cuffs (Jake Vickers)
Paul Boche - Uns Geht es Gut( The blond)
I seriously couldn’t find anything with Donal Finn( Eoin) or Corin Silva( Almonds). They are basically in nothing outside of SAS. Same goes for Bill Fraser, sorry @adowbaldwin

Blame @sea-jello for this but
Squip Squad birthday headcanons (from oldest to youngest) ((Assuming the show takes place in 2015 but the year really doesn't matter That Much))
Jake: October 30th, 1998 - Maybe they're only framed as "Halloween parties" because he doesn't want to think about how his own parents couldn't bother to be home on one of the few days where it truly matters. And hey, how would anyone be able to say otherwise when he wants everyone to come in-costume?
Rich: November 17th, 1998 - ngl I didn't have much of a reason for this one it just Felt Right. Something something "the Thursday of the year"
Brooke: December 17th, 1998 - no lumping in birthday gifts with Christmas gifts for this Jewish gal. She got lucky. She def loves peppermint themed drinks and treats, which can certainly be attributed to her birthday landing in Peppermint Everything season. Of course if she had a fall birthday this probably would've been true for Pumpkin Spice Everything
Chloe: February 7th, 1999 - you know she joked that her birthday was The Real Valentine's Day one (1) time when she was little and the whole school held it over her head. Maybe she gets sick of it eventually, maybe it just boosts her ego, maybe it's a "same shit different year" thing. Either way, the joke always comes up.
Christine: April 1st, 1999 - the April Fool's messiah, as her dads call her. Something something false labor for the surrogate that ended up being real later in the day, something something always bringing silly harmless pranks to school on her birthday.
Jenna: May 28th, 1999 - yuh I didn't have a huge reason for this one either (technically it was for a minor plot point from a Really Old fic of mine but shhhhhh)
Michael: May 31st, 1999 - this started as an "End of May Early June" joke that just ended up sticking. Also the "M Thing" was unintentional. Young Micha definitely reveled in being Slightly Older than Jeremy even though Jeremy was Slightly Taller than him at the time (which didn't end up lasting forever hA)
Jeremy: June 1st, 1999 - again, "End of May Early June" joke, but it kinda worked out too bc Two River BMC opened on June 1st, 2015. The "J Thing" was also unintentional. Michael is like 19 hours older than him and he Never Heard The End Of It when they were little. Every joking argument would end with "I'm older," "I'm taller," which no longer worked when Michael hit his growth spurt freshman year and Jeremy never fully caught up.

Some things were never meant to leave Earth…. or be known about. Let alone being introduced to a whole new world, new life and a species called the Na'vi that probably didn't understand that there were worst things that came from Earth than Humans with technology. Jake knows the Earth was a harsh place, well aware of the dangers it had and the monsters it had as well. No one cared, nothing would matter and….so what. If they thought of him of nothing, then why not take himself, his avatar and his friend and fuck off into the wilderness of pandora. If he can screw over the RDA and its resident parasites, then bonus points. Grace isn't thrilled.
Chapter 33
“How many people are here?” Alejandra asked curisouly.
“As in defectors in total, twelve that left the RDA, then we have two avatars that were assumed dead and one human also abandoned that leaves us to sixteen. With all of you, that’s… twenty-eight”
Alejandra frowned and then shook her head. “Then there’s at least two unaccounted for. You got Kung? I see her spawn by the butchers.”
“Yes, we have the Kung’s.” Certainly colourful choices of words in regards to Bree. However… “Who are we missing?”
“A couple. Leah and Jodi Brooks. They ditched when Kung Jr bombed the fence out. They took advantage of the distraction as well.” Alejandra said, “One’s a repair mechanic for AMP suits and the other worked as an Engineer technician.”
Jake frowned, passing a look to the Olo'eyktan. If two had ditched along with Kung then that was a lot of time for two small unaccounted humans to be out in the wild. Although the fact that Bree had bombed something did throw him off a little, he refocused on the important parts.
“Any indication of direction?” He asked, hopefully. It could give the Na’vi a starting point if the miners got a good amount of gossitsup after the fact.
“None useful. Headed west, the opposite of Hometree but they could be anywhere at this point. I thought for a moment they might be part of one of your groups. Leah’s a good friend of mine.” She looked a little disappointed but shrugged it off.
“We will keep our eyes further out. The Sky people have ventured closer into our territory than we expected. I doubt that will stop but we will ensure they’re not close to the camps of those with Uturu.” Eytukan spoke firmly.

NINJAGO AU DUMP BC I SAID SO !!
NINJAGO BMC AU
jeremy: jay- doesn’t get the squip to end up w nya, but instead bc he’s sick of feeling like a loser and thinks it’s be good for both him and cole if he was “cooler” bc to him cole is the coolest guy he knows and he feels like he’s holding him back socially
michael: cole- end love interest, obv obv
christine: nya- kind of plays a similar role to chloe or brooke in the sense that jay only tries to date her bc the squip tells him it’ll make him seem cool, rather than genuine feelings; has a little gossip trio w/ morro and pixal
rich: kai- got a squip a year prior, pretty much same character/purpose as rich
jenna: morro- idk i just rlly love the idea of morro being the queen of gossip @ their school
jake: lloyd- bros the green ninja ofc he’s the most popular guy @ school in this au, but also not jock popular guy like jake, more like the popular guy who’s popular bc he’s attractive but ALSO he’s just the sweetest guy. ever. and rlly oblivious to the point where u want to hate him bc of the way the ppl who are nice to him/like him are but you can’t bc he’s so sweet
chloe: pixal- listen okay she’s just a gossip girl ik im pushing it w chloe and christine here but let me LIVE okay let me have my nya pixal + morro gossip trio
brooke: zane- zane is the innocent guy that is besties w the gossip trio bc he follows pixal like a puppy and she would protect him w her life
endgame ships: bruise, bg pixane + maybe samuraishipping
would also include focuses on the dynamics between: kai + lloyd, rgb siblings, nya pixal + morro, kai + jay, + probably more if i fleshed out the whole plot a little more
thinking abt unagami squip?? or maybe some version of superstar rockin’ jay???? probably the latter tbh
SKYBOUND AU(S) BUT MAKE EM ALL BRUISE !! (rhyme time bbg)
so like on the one hand we have the obvious: replace nya w cole. which. i want to do obv bc it’s perfect and i have been planning out the details of the scene where he dies in jays arms and they turn back time and then we finally get our bruise kiss since FOREVER so im not letting my baby go even if other ppl have already written the concept b4.
ON THE OTHER HAND we have, instead of doing the same plot just switching around the roles of some of the characters, REWRITING THE WHOLE PLOT BC HEAR ME OUT HEAR ME OUTTTTT OKAY everyones always like “nyas the bride” “coles the bride” but what if WHAT IF WHAT IFFFFF *JAYS* THE BRIDE???? HEAR ME OUT HERE ME OUT HEAR ME OUT OKAY IVE BEEN THINKING ABT THIS IT CAME TO ME IN THE SHOWER AND I WAS LIKE. THIS. I COULD WORK WITH THIS. BC I WAS THINKING ABT LIKE SOME YUMMY COLE-PERSPECTIVE BRUISE ANGST OF S6 W THE SONG “ITS OVER, ISNT IT” THE OTHER DAY AND I WAS LIKE “HM WHAT IF I WRITE A WHOLE FIC ABT THIS” BC I CANT JUST THINK OF ONE-SIDED BRUISE BC I HATE THE ONE SIDED SHIP TROPE *BUT* ONE SIDED BUT ITS ACTUALLY NOT THEY JUST THINK ITS ONE SIDED BC THEYRE IDIOTS IS A TROPE THAT HAS SUCH A CHOKEHOLD ON ME AND NOW HERE I AM!!!!
any ways uh if i did this im kinda thinking like. nadakhans all “i wanna marry nya” and jays like “dude wtf u can’t just. marry nya ill fite u /p coles my real bbg ofc” and nadakhan says “shit u rite. too much work. plus i got me a captive rite here like it don’t matter who i marry cuz once i got my powers i can bring back that shitty girlypop of mine n e ways. damn bluey ur so smart” and jays like “wha.” so our guy writes a fun explanation of the whole marriage thing to the rest of the squad and he’s like “YOO so im bouta get married but that would not be great for me or anyone else in the whole world so maybe we should do something abt that like just so y’all know” and coles like “bitch not my MANS” and we’ll see where it goes from there bc the timeline would be V different and things would have to get done faster meaning they’d get done differently and id have to actually rewatch the season to figure out the kinks but as i continue to write this the urge to make this a reality grows every more tempting i am foaming at the mouth rn
dumped all of this into my notes and decided to share to gauge ppls interests (pls excuse any rambling my notes are full of so much rambling it’s not even funny)

brooke davis
send me a character and i'll tell you
My first impression: honestly she was behaving a little strangely imo but it was still intriguing wondering why brooke was Acting Like That even if i was *slightly* annoyed
My impression now: this girl is one of my favorite characters of all time, i love and adore her so much. she grew so much throughout the show and had such a great arc as she pursued a character journey where she became really well developed and an excellent friend. this is my babygirl and she and naley are the heart of the show, oth would not be the same without brooke
Favorite thing about that character: i love her fierce love for her friends and how she channels her bitchiness into being protective over her little family, as well as how she grew from a party girl character to someone who could steal enjoy things like sex while also having ambition and a dream for her career
Least favorite thing: hmm idk it's female characters in the early aughts so sometimes the female characters arent necessarily the most progressive feminists - even if brooke actually does care for, value, and protect her fellow women. her behavior in s4 was weird but i honestly think it was just out of character and a way to make peyton look better/be more palatable.
Favorite line/scene: SO MANY?? i am one in a million. does brooke davis have to slap a bitch? i used to be a bitch for the sake of being a bitch, but now i am a bitch for the sake of my friends and family, you do not want to test that. etc etc this girl has some of the best lines on the show
Favorite interaction that character has with another: her and haley becoming best friends and brooke always calling her tutor girl. also brooke's friendship with rachel was so lovely and i liked their scenes in s4 a lot before rachel became a worse person :/
A character that I wish that character would interact with more: i always thought her and alex would bond over their similarities but alex's behavior did kind of shoot all hopes of that. however i did like brooke and jake's low-stakes friendship and he was really good for peyton so i could see brooke and jake slowly growing closer, in a detached sort of way like cece/nick on new girl. and brooke and nate had great potential to be the TRUE sibling relationship of the show, they look/act similar and are kind of genderbent versions of each other, so it would be interesting if they had been canon siblings.
character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: caroline forbes from tvd, and cordelia chase from btvs. also weirdly enough clove just because clove is a mean brunette and sort of a control freak
A headcanon about that character: idk i like the idea of brooke and nate being childhood best friends in a jake&gina from b99 way
song that reminds of that character: prom queen by molly kate, foolish one by taylor swift, all you had to do was stay by taylor swift, and the entire 1989 album
An unpopular opinion about that character: she was literally right like i can point out almost any argument between her and peyton brooke making fun of her dead mother notwithstanding because that is exceptionally vile and cruel and ooc for her and take brooke's side
Favorite picture: you get two

About their morals
Jeremy: Morals are based on things we normally perceive as bad/good, may ignore morals when it comes to fitting in a group, is a little scared of violence, will not commit violent acts but might condone it
Michael: Strict morals, will follow no matter what, most morals are also same as general morals with some that deviate(those are mostly about violence and revenge)
Christine: Will follow her morals but is accepting to other views(she’s still considering those related to murder)
Jake: Morally gray, will do what it takes to achieve what he wants(which usually ends up backfiring on himself), is indifferent to murder and violence
Rich: Morally undefined, slightly questionable, changes all the time(one day he’s like nooo murder’s bad then the other day he texts jake to get him out of the police station)
Brooke: Most morals are the normal socially acceptable ones, but then you have the ones that are kinda questionable(she is aware that some of her morals are a bit questionable), morals might get affected by others
Chloe: Morally gray for the most part, but slightly lacks empathy(not to a sociopathic degree), condones violence(when it is necessary) but will not stop others from committing violent acts(“that’s their business not mine idc”)

Magnifying Glass: "Explorers"
Episode: "Explorers"
Series: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Season 3, Episode 22
Original Air Date: May 8, 1995
Teleplay Writer: René Echevarria
Screenwriter: Hilary J. Bader
Director: Cliff Bole
“Explorers” provides a window into which we, the audience, peer and see dimensions of Sisko’s character and his relationship with Jake that he is not often allowed to nurture. He’s the captain of a space station; he’s busy at all times of the day with the demands of his crew, of the governments of Bajor and Cardassia and with the imminent threat of invasion from the elusive yet brutal Dominion. In this episode, Sisko gets the time to spend doing something he is purely passionate about, exercising his creativity and the side of him that’s a big history nerd (”Why [build an ancient Bajoran lightship by hand]? Because it’ll be fun!”). We also get to see him spend some quality time with his son, Jake.
For a project of mine exploring Afrofuturism and Black masculinity, I chose this episode as one of three to study and analyze under Sisko’s importance as a character not just within the Star Trek franchise but in the broader world of television.
Benjamin Sisko’s role as a Black father is particularly pertinent to the plot of “Explorers”. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine first aired in 1993, not far removed from the hell that was the Reagan Administration. Reagan contributed grossly during his presidency to the denigration and humiliation of popular notions of the Black family and the framing of Black Americans as criminals. Mainstream films and television during and before the era, if they include Black characters at all, portray Black men as aggressive, violent and insolent, an image very much in line with Reagan’s manipulative message. Avery Brooks’ casting in Deep Space Nine as it’s Starfleet commander was an historic first for the Star Trek franchise and a step against the popular stereotypes of “welfare queens” and “absent Black fathers.” Ben Sisko - whose most defining characteristic aside from being the commander and later, captain of a space station is being a father to his son Jake - completely demolishes the “absent Black father” stereotype and all the others, firstly, by just existing. Sisko is very present in Jake’s life. Even with his duties keeping him at the station’s beck and call, he makes the time he spends with his son an unconditional priority and is quick to assure Jake of that fact. The two of them share common interests in cooking and baseball, threads that bind them to each other and to Jake’s grandfather, Joseph, who owns and runs the family restaurant back on Earth. Sisko is diligent in his care of Jake as he is for all that he loves. He is an actively loving, caring, protective and supportive father every step of the way. Sisko’s strong sense of justice means that Jake can’t really get away with his and Nog’s various shenanigans, but he is lenient and fair and always there to comfort Jake when anything goes wrong. There are multiple moments throughout the series in which they both learn from each other (this episode being one of them): a quality of their relationship that Sisko warmly welcomes. It is Jake’s care for and faith in his Ferengi friend that helps Nog earn Sisko’s respect. Their closeness allows them to have difficult conversations, to resolve arguments in a place of understanding and compassion, to be vulnerable with one another unconditionally. While initially disappointed when Jake tells him he’d rather be a writer than follow in his father’s footsteps by enrolling in Starfleet Academy, Sisko is ultimately supportive of his son’s interests because all he wants is for Jake to be safe and happy. Which is where this episode picks up from the last time the two of them discussed Jake’s future.
At this point in the series, Jake is ready to apply to college and has been hard at work writing pieces to submit to schools he’s interested in. Yet, even with his father’s enthusiastic blessing to pursue what brings him joy, Jake is hesitant to share his acceptance to Pennington back on Earth. Not because he thinks his father will be angry with him about going behind his back but because he doesn’t want his dad to be alone. By no means would they be losing each other to this new stage of Jake’s life. However, it would be the longest time they’ve spent truly apart from each other and they wouldn’t even be in the same region of space. They certainly won’t be able to go off on impromptu trips in ancient space ships on a whim or watch historical baseball games in the holosuites together as often as they do on DS9. And above all, what this episode most emphasizes is their father-son relationship, this relationship in which they are each other’s security in a turbulent, violent world that placed them at the threshold of a wormhole in the middle of a war-torn sector of the galaxy directly after losing Jake’s mother and Ben’s wife, Jennifer. Whether or not either of them are ready for it, Jake going off to Pennington means that that security in each other will change. Hence Jake’s ultimate decision to defer admission for a year to spend more time with his father and gather more experiences to write about.
This episode showcases our hero doing exactly what Starfleet is all about: exploring the cultures of other worlds and engaging with their ways of knowledge. At the same time, he is beginning an exploration of what life will be like with Jake off at school (and what life will be like with a beard) and he is also getting an insight into his son’s inner world. Both are journeys the two of them embark on together, even if one must be undertaken across many lightyears of space.
Sisko stands out as an intentionally Black character against the backdrop of the undeniably important if, comparatively, rather flat representation in Lt. Nyota Uhura and Lt. Geordi LaForge. Deep Space Nine’s writers and Avery Brooks made a conscious effort to ensure that Benjamin Sisko’s Blackness was not simply seasoning sprinkled sparsely on top of his character, but instead the essential binding factor that brought all the elements of the Captain’s personality together. Not only do we know he has his family’s Creole restaurant to thank for his cooking skills, but we get to see him be at home and with family more than once in this series. And aside from what is clearly directly tied to his Blackness, he has other interests and hobbies, like baseball, building, art and studying ancient technologies. He uses his experience as a Black man and father and his deep knowledge of Black Earth history to inform his actions multiple times throughout the series (i.e. “Far Beyond the Stars”, “Past Tense“, “Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang”, “The Abandoned”, “By Inferno’s Light”, “Waltz” and “The Maquis”, to name a few). In this episode, we even see him wearing a top inspired by West African dashiki patterns.
Commissioned on Deep Space Nine, his identity as a Black man, even in the supposedly utopian Federation, positions him as someone able to sympathize with the Bajorans in a way that none of his contemporaries Kirk, Picard, Archer, Pike, Lorca or Janeway ever could: both his people and theirs have histories of violent systemic oppression and persecution, as well as continuously developing histories of liberation. He understands their need to reclaim their land, knowledge and ways of life because that is what his ancestors began and saw through. And it is what he, Jake, Joseph and Kasidy, their descendants, carry on and embody in the 24th century. He builds the Bajoran lightship in order to prove that the ancient Bajorans were capable of such technological prowess as to get all the way to Cardassia without a warp drive despite dubiety from both his coworkers and the Cardassians themselves. So not only does he connect with the Bajorans’ struggles in a way that a white human captain cannot, but he actively participates in bolstering the repatriation of their culture and history. Little wonder why the Prophets chose him as their Emissary.

Hi Ashton! I've loved talking about OTH with you. I was wondering what you would pick as five unpopular opinions about the show? No judgment here - I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours :)
Hi!! I've loved talking about the show with you, too. You have great opinions 💙 LOL I'll try. I definitely have some, but I don't want to repeat myself from other times I've been asked about unpopular opinions.
1.) Even though One Tree Hill is well known for their iconic love stories and being very good at hitting the emotional beats, sometimes I think the writing was lacking. The biggest example of this is the Brucas/LP mess. To be fair, it's been speculated that behind the scenes shenanigans is the reason Lucas flip flopped multiple times. But as a result, the writers often intentionally misdirected the audience to surprise them with the opposite of what they were expecting. Even though I LOVE Brucas's season 2 arc and enjoyed seeing Lucas pining, I have to admit they needed more on screen time together as friends for Lucas's revelation to be believable. Brooke and Lucas were friends again during episodes 202-209, but it wasn't until the beginning of 210 that they seemed to decide to become 'real friends'. So in that way, I can understand why some LP shippers believe Lucas's revelation should have been about Peyton instead. Season 1 was much more pro LP. However, I don't think the first half of season 2 sufficiently set up Lucas realizing his deep feelings for either girl. What sells me on Lucas being in love with Brooke is his behavior during episodes 211-223, when he continuously shows up for Brooke and acts as a true friend, always valuing her happiness over his own while keeping his feelings to himself. Lucas allowed Brooke to be with Felix while also sticking around for her. In contrast, Lucas helped bring Jake back for Peyton, but didn't really stick around for her. On to seasons 3 and 4. The writers spent so much time setting up Lucas's love for Brooke and the rebuilding phase of their relationship alongside Peyton's love for Jake. In season 3, it was kind of like, "never mind." Even though Peyton spent the entirety of season 2 wanting Jake and not showing any signs of loving Lucas, season 3 gave us multiple, ambiguous moments where Peyton is talking about a former boyfriend. Peyton realizing she's still in love with Lucas implies those moments were in reference to him rather than Jake, the guy she was actually in a happy, healthy, monogamous relationship with the previous season. It doesn't track at all. Lucas's feelings for Peyton simply aren't there at all. At best, you could say Lucas still felt some attraction towards Peyton because he flirted with her from time to time, but emotionally he was 100% with Brooke. In season 4, Lucas is repeatedly told he should be with Peyton or that Peyton is the one he wants. Lucas seems to arrive at the revelation Peyton is the one kicking and screaming. When the Ravens win the state championship, Brooke and Lucas hug first, presumably to show us that even though Lucas previously said it was Brooke he wanted next to him when his dreams came true, it doesn't feel right or as satisfying? Yet again, someone (Brooke) has to tell Lucas to go to Peyton. Even at this moment, Lucas looks baffled and is very much like, "Okay..." But then Peyton says the magic words, "I'll be seeing ya," and suddenly that line unlocks Lucas's repressed feelings buried deep within. Lucas claims Peyton is the one. It's not Riverdale bad, but it's pretty pathetic writing. Season 5 is slightly less bad because by the time we reach the time jump, we've unfortunately become accustomed to Lucas's fuckboy ways. Still, Lucas dicks around for 18 episodes until finally realizing he does want to marry Peyton after all. All this after spending the majority of the season behaving as if he'd rather get a root canal than reunite with Peyton. Someone on Reddit hilariously described Lucas's dream sequence as him choosing his future wife in a raffle, so I'll steal that. So to sum up Lucas's romantic life during seasons 1-5, he is perpetually confused about who he wants to date. The sole time Lucas makes a real decision about his love life that he came to on his own, that he wants Brooke, he's basically told that was wrong and he should be with her best friend instead.
Also, Naley's relationship progression in season 1 was ridiculous. The first season mainly felt realistic in terms of their growth as a couple up until the finale. It was literally like, "I know we've only been saying I love you for two weeks, but wanna get married?"
2.) 316, the school shooting episode, is overrated. I still love it for what it is and consider it probably the most emotional episode of the series, but I have a lot of problems with it. To start with, it's another example of portraying a school shooter as someone sympathetic who was driven to violence by bullies. This was a misconception that started with Columbine and is only now starting to be rectified. I'm of two minds about the LP stuff. I can appreciate that life continues regardless of bigger things happening. Lucas and Peyton were in a highly charged situation, so in some ways it makes sense for that moment to happen. But I also kind of feel like it's tasteless for it to happen during this particular episode. Then afterwards, it's kind of portrayed like Peyton in particular can't be blamed because it was the school shooting. And of course, the whole thing ends with Jimmy not even killing anyone. The entire point of the episode was to perfectly orchestrate a scenario where Dan could conceivably fatally shoot Keith in an unpremeditated way. In my opinion, the decision to have Dan kill Keith took the show in a direction I never fully loved.
3.) Season 4 was the worst season of the high school years. I enjoy certain things about season 4. 409, 413, 417, 420 and 421 are some of the strongest episodes of the series. But when it comes to individual episodes, the majority of them are either less memorable than the majority of seasons 1-3 episodes or outright bad due to the story lines. This is not a good season for female characters. Haley was shoved into the background during her own pregnancy in service of Nathan's story and struggles of being a teen dad to be. Brooke was intentionally trashed and made out to be a hypocrite to manipulate the audience into rooting for Peyton and Lucas. Peyton objectively gets the best stuff, but she's also highly reliant on Lucas during this season. Independent Peyton is completely gone at this point. She sort of vaguely has dreams that set up her role in the time jump, but mostly she just cares about Lucas. The energy is also off. I can't explain it, but the move from The WB to The CW is very noticeable. OTH was always a soapy show, but now we had stalkers and point shaving and offensively written "Clean Teens".
4.) Brooke isn't and wasn't, not even a little bit, to blame or in any way deserving of being cheated on by Lucas and Peyton. Whatever "scheming" Brooke supposedly did, Brooke didn't force Lucas and Peyton to keep their feelings quiet. They made that choice on their own.
5.) I've talked about this before, but I can't come up with a fifth and it always needs to be said. HALEY WAS NOT THE VILLAIN IN SEASON 2. Haley was a teenage girl, newly married, in over her head with the responsibilities of being a new wife and tasting freedom for the first time. During a time in her life when she should have been spreading her wings and seeing what else was out there, she had a husband. A devoted husband who supported her dreams, but a husband nonetheless. Haley rushed into marriage because she loved Nathan and got caught up in the romanticism of committing herself to him. The fact this was so out of character and so wild for Haley was literally the point. But in spite of the fact Nathan had Haley's heart and she was legally bound to him, Haley was still a teenager and was going to sometimes behave in ways that were sort of selfish and immature. God forbid she do what every single character on the show did LOL. While she didn't handle things 100% correctly, Nathan also made mistakes in his marriage to Haley. Even Nathan acknowledged the ultimatum was wrong. These mistakes just aren't discussed as often because (1) misogyny (2) Haley was ultimately the one to walk out of their marriage (3) Nathan and Haley had different needs during season 2. Haley needed the space and freedom to pursue her music and figure out who she was. Nathan needed the closeness and the stability Haley could provide, viewing the marriage itself as his "escape" and freedom. These needs were at odds, leaving them in an impossible situation where the possibility of remaining physically separated came up. And worse, Nathan found out about Haley kissing Chris at the same time. This isn't to say I'm excusing that. It was all just terrible timing, bad communication, and kids trying to pretend they were adults.

Roy Harper is not the Green Arrow. Tommy Merlyn is most certainly not the Green Arrow. These are two names on a long list of people who have given so much and sacrificed everything in the name of my crusade.
