10, 18, 21, 22, 28, 41, 44, 65, 98, 99, 107, 114, 118, 119, 131, 148, 150, 157, 194, 201, 212, 215, 216 ( I'm sorry if they're a lot but I like them very much)
OHMYGOD greddie this is your revenge isn’t it
Okay here we go
10: The word that I use all the time to describe something great?
My bf and me use the word “beste”. It’s german and means “best”, but we use it without any articles or anything. We just look at something or indicate what we mean and then say “Beste.” Which is a bit weird, I guess, but it happened once and now we can’t stop. We use it for things, but also food, or actions. XD
In english I think I tend to overuse the word “awesome” sometimes.
18: Movie I watch when I'm feeling down?
When I feel REALLY down, I usually watch LotR. I pretty much know it by heart by now so it’s really calming for me to watch, plus I just adore this world and its characters.
Very often I also turn toward the HP movies (to everybody’s great surprise, I’m sure), or Pacific Rim, or Pride and Prejudice... I have a ton of comfort movies.
21: What am I most afraid of?
Deep, philosophical answer: meaninglessness. I want to matter. I want to make an impact, I want to be remembered, I want to be needed, I want to BE. The idea of a meaningless life followed by an equally meaningless death scares the hell out of me.
Less deep and philosophical answer: dentists and spiders?
Putting this under a cut because it’s getting super long!
22: A good quality of mine?
I’m a good listener and I’m honest. So if you ever need honest opinions/advice on/for a situation your in.. i’m ur girl.
28: Something I miss?
Something or someone? SomeTHING I miss is my old home. I miss the house, the garden, I miss sitting on the roof, I miss walking out the door and being right in the middle of nowhere. I miss that so, so, SO much.
41: Do I have any strange phobias?
Dentists? That’s not strange, is it? My strange one is balloons. I can’t stand them. I go out of my way to avoid them. Helium filled balloons are fine, mostly, and hotairballoons are fine too. But the normal, like, kid-party balloons? I hate them, stay away from me.
44: Last book I read?
I’m currently reading “Norse Mythology” by Neil Gaiman and I’m enjoying it a LOT! Before that I read Shakespeare’s “Richard II” and absolutely loved it.
65: What fictional universe would I like to be a part of?
Hmm. I want to say Middle-earth, but I think, given the choice, I’d rather be a witch in the HP universe? But then again, ROHAN. Or maybe a captain in the aerial corpse of the Temeraire universe? I DON’T KNOW. ALL OF THEM. ;--;
98: 3 things I love?
- the feeling when i’m becoming obsessed with something new
- when summer is over and it’s finally cold enough to wear a sweater
- meeting someone new and realizing you’re extremely similar and share so many thoughts and interests
99: 3 things I hate?
- Passive aggression, especially when it’s hidden behind fake concern. That’s extremely specific I know, but it’s something that drove me up the wall a few days ago.
- Lies. Cliche, but, honestly? Don’t fucking lie. What’s the point. Oh, that also includes, cheating, betrayal, etc, any kind of dishonesty.
- People who treat their animals badly. Ignorance isn’t an excuse. Read up on proper animal care before you get a pet. Seriously, it’s not that hard, you have the entire internet at your disposal!
107: Guilty pleasure?
I don’t think I have guilty pleasures anymore. I used to be ashamed of liking a bunch of things, but I’ve realized that it’s my business and my business only what I like and dislike. I guess a while ago I would have said Bollywood? But it’s not a guilty pleasure, it’s just a pleasure! Bollywood movies are awesome!
114: A place I have not been but wish to visit?
Norway. I want to go hiking or camping there, or both. It looks so beautiful on images I’ve seen, and I’m so interested in its history and mythology.
118: Do I like space?
I LOVE SPACE. Kid-me was obsessed with space. I had and still have a bunch of books on various space related topics.
119: Do I like the deep ocean?
HELL YES. Not as many books on that front, not in my possession anyway, but I’d love to read more about it. It’s so amazing to me that we’re still exploring and finding out new things about all the stuff that’s going on down there. It’s mysterious, and I live for mystery. (Same with space, obviously)
131: Am I a good liar?
Hahah. I’m the WORST liar. I hate lying, so I always avoid it. I blush and laugh. I can hold eyecontact but it’s still obvious. I’m just. The worst liar. And frankly I’m happy with that!
148: Which fictional character do I wish was real?
Temeraire. My beloved imperial social justice warrior dragon Temeraire. I love him so so so much. SO much.
150: What is the best decision I have made in life so far?
Let’s face it, I have not made any good decisions so far. Jk, idk, maybe breaking up with my ex boyfriend, and moving in with my current one? Because that old relationship was SO not a happy one, but this one is so awesome. I have all the freedom I could ask for, but at the same time all the emotional support and love I could ask for as well.
Another good decision I’m really glad I made was reaching out to my brother a few years ago because I hated that we almost never talked to each other outside of family meetings/family issues. That has changed since then!
157: What makes me nostalgic?
Looking at pictures of the place where I used to live. I miss the castle, and I miss the park, and I miss the old christmas market.
194: If I could choose my last words, what would they be?
I’m not sure I want to think about that. I don’t think I could choose my last words right now, since I don’t know what Ill be and what I’ll know when I die. If I was dying right now, my last words would probably be “No, this can’t be it, there’s still so much I want to do!”
201: A nightmare that has stayed with me?
I had a terrifying nightmare when I was a kid.
I was running down the hall in our old house, knocking open the door to my dad’s office and running inside at full speed, not noticing that there was a trap on the floor. I ran right into it. It was a magical trap, and it didn’t hurt me, but it pulled me down to the floor so I was lying down with my arms outstretched like I’d been crucified, and I couldn’t move. My parents and brother and I think my grandma were all there, just looking down at me with really sad eyes. Then they picked up my teacup and drew a black X on it, which, in that dream, meant that the person who the cup belonged to, had died. But I wasn’t dead, I was just lying on the floor, right there! I remember pleading with them to just help me up, help me get out of that trap, but they didn’t move.
It was scary as all hell.
212: Was I named after anyone?
I was! My mum named me after her favorite aunt, Christine, who, sadly, died before I ever had a chance to meet her.
215: What is the weirdest talent I have?
I don’t think I have weird talents. I’m not sure I have talents at all. I just put a lot of work and energy into the things I’m good at now?
216: Favourite fictional character?
Greddie. Why. Why would you do this to me. You KNOW I can not decide.
I’ll name my favorite faves, is that alright?
Eowyn, Boromir, Harry Potter, the Weasley Twins, The Fool/Beloved, Temeraire, Loki, Sam Winchester.
That’s FAR from everyone, but I tried. It’s a bunch of the ones who are extremely important to me!

I was tagged by @sassmasterradagast to answer these questions about books/reading. Thanks Melly :)
1. Which book has been on your shelves the longest?
Harry Potter!
2. What is your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next?
Currently reading The Power by Naomi Alderman. My last read was The Lost Plot by Genevieve Cogman (The Invisible Library #4.) My next read will probably be Snow Flower And The Secret Fan by Lisa See.
3. Which book does everyone like and you hated?
I wouldn’t say I hated it but I didn’t really enjoy I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith, despite it being a classic and people recommending it.
4. Which book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read, but you probably won’t?
Probably David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. I have it and want to read it because I love the tv miniseries but it’s just soooo long! Plus I wasn’t enthralled by Great Expectations.
5. Which book are you saving for “retirement?”
Ooh not sure. Retirement is a long way away so if I wanted to read something I don’t think i could wait that long!
6. Last page: read it first or wait till the end?
Wait till the end! I’ve peeked in the past and hated myself for it.
7. Acknowledgements: waste of ink and paper or interesting aside?
If they’re important to the author then I respect that.
8. Which book character would you switch places with?
So many! Hermione Granger, Jo March, Marianne Dashwood, Irene Winters...
9. Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time)?
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows came out when I was on holiday in South Africa. My sister and I bought copies in Cape Town and were just buried in them and missed the amazing views from the top of Table Mountain!
10. Name a book you acquired in some interesting way.
Grabbed Last Train From Liguria by Christine Dwyer Hickey from the bin at work because it was in a bad condition and not good enough to sell. Fine for me!
11. Have you ever given away a book for a special reason to a special person?
I’ve given people books as presents but I’ve bought them their own copies. I love mine too much to give them away!
12. Which book has been with you to the most places?
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.
13. Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad ten years later?
Cold Mountain again! Hated it whilst I was studying it at A-Level but then I took it away to uni, read it again and again and again and now it’s become my favorite.
14. What is the strangest item you’ve ever found in a book?
A ticket to the One World Trade Centre in New York. I’d just been to New York but the ticket wasn’t mine. I get most books in charity shops though so I find all sorts in them.
15. Used or brand new?
I’m very happy with used copies. But I get some brand new ones for my birthday and Christmas so they always seem extra special.
16. Stephen King: Literary genius or opiate of the masses?
Literary genius!
17. Have you ever seen a movie you liked better than the book?
The book is always better!
18. Conversely, which book should NEVER have been introduced to celluloid?
Possibly Memoirs Of A Geisha with what I've heard about how the author betrayed the lady he interviewed for it and made life really hard for her.
19. Have you ever read a book that’s made you hungry, cookbooks being excluded from this question?
The feast bits in Harry Potter always make me hungry! Plus the bit in Honeydukes...
20. Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?
My sister. She loves to read too and studied literature at uni so I trust her judgement!
I don’t want to put pressure on people by tagging them so just do it if you want to!

How Horror Movies Get Around Cell Phones
How Horror Movies Get Around Cell Phones https://ift.tt/2PgfEZX
No bars.
Image: Bad Robot Productions
Cell phones have changed the way people think, act, and communicate. They’ve also been hell on the horror genre. Smartphones have rendered many classic horror movie tropes ridiculous, or even implausible. However, they’ve also provided opportunities to scare us in new and inventive ways. Let’s look at where modern horror has succeeded, and failed, to enter the digital age.
Horror is a genre that thrives on fear and isolation—we can’t be scared if we feel safe. And what do phones do? Make us feel safe. Nowadays, a huge portion of the country has instant and constant access to programs like Google Maps, Find Your Phone, and Uber. The moment someone has entered your home, you can dial 9-1-1 and have the operator track you using your GPS. Cell phones have taken some of horror’s ability to make us feel alone.
Of course, for many horror films and shows, the easiest thing to do is simply take the phone’s power away. Sometimes figuratively, but most of the time literally. This can work if it’s done right—but there are a lot of ways it can fail, showing how some of horror’s usual tactics are stuck in the past. Here are the most-common ways horror movies get around smartphones, along with examples of when they’ve worked or fallen flat.
I’ll bet you wish you hadn’t signed that NDA now.

No Signal
There’s a reason there’s an entire video dedicated to the saga of “No Signal.” It’s the easiest trope in the phone book. The heroes are trying to call for help, but they can’t get a bar. This works when the location calls for it. For example, this happened to Michelle in 10 Cloverfield Lane. Not only was it tense—as she strained against her restraints to get a signal—but it tied into the mystery. Are there no bars because she’s in a bunker, or because there really was an alien invasion? And in Ex Machina, the lack of reception was purposeful, as Nathan didn’t want word getting out about his project.
However, oftentimes it’s just an excuse for the phone to be a dead brick of nothing. In Jurassic World, Claire’s cell phone reception was immaculate on that island...right until she needed to warn the boys about the dinosaur. Jeepers Creepers 2 blamed sunspots of all things. There are also times when the lack of a signal is caused by other forces, like a ghost or signal blocker. The supernatural ones are always my favorite because they’re never explained. It’s just...ghosts hate cell phones.
This particular plot device worked better in the early to mid-2000s, when phone maps weren’t as widespread as they are today. That said, there are still areas where there isn’t good reception. I visited upstate New York recently, and I got stuck in some dead zones. If you can find one of those sweet spots, your killer’s got an advantage.
Chris wakes up to a strange sight.
Image: Blumhouse
Dead Battery
The dead battery might soon replace “no signal” as the most-popular cell phone cliché in horror. It’s more realistic, can happen anywhere, and prevents the hero from using the phone for any reason, like checking a map or taking pictures. It also can be downright terrifying...when done well. The idea of your phone going dead can leave you helpless. Much like having your car break down, it’s a loss of power.
By far, the best use of this has to be Get Out. Throughout the film, Chris wakes up to find that someone has unplugged his phone in the night, preventing it from getting a full charge and guaranteeing it will die sometime during the day. This adds to Chris’s feelings of isolation and makes it harder for him to trust the people around him. There was also House of Good & Evil, where Maggie had just moved and couldn’t find her charger. A common mistake, but in this case a terrifying one.
That said, it’s also really easy to abuse. The average smartphone can hold a charge for nine hours, but it seems like phones in movies are dead after 45 minutes. Let’s not forget that infamous Cloverfield phone, that dies right as Rob was about to talk to Beth, so he frantically runs into an electronics store to find a fresh battery. There was also Drag Me To Hell, where a demon instantly drained Christine’s battery through supernatural means as she looked on in horror. Oh no, not my phone! It was quite silly.
“We’re going to steal so many cell phones.”
Image: Columbia Pictures
Just Out of Reach
This is any situation where the phone is lost, destroyed, or otherwise taken out of the equation. This can be something as simple as having it slip out of your hands, or as convoluted as a group of friends putting all their phones into a giant bag during their weekend out camping because it’ll help them bond better, like with Hold Your Breath.
This trope has got to be the most ridiculous because if often plays out very stupidly. For example, in the latest Halloween movie, (minor spoiler for current film) Jamie Lee Curtis’ granddaughter had her phone thrown into a punchbowl by her soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend. Sure, it succeeds in making sure she can’t be contacted, but throwing someone’s phone in a bowl of punch is not exactly something people do. However, that doesn’t hold a candle to the silly ploy in 30 Days of Night, when a bunch of vampires snuck into every person’s house and stole all the cell phones in town, burying them in the snow. Now that’s what I call dedicated.
Always watching. And watching. And watching.
Image: Blumhouse
Part of the Storytelling
A creative solution to the cell phone dilemma has been to simply make it part of the story. Given the popularity of found footage horror, adding cell phones is a logical choice. However, there is a limit. While there are occasional horror films shot entirely using cell phones, like Hooked Up, for the most part these type of films combine cell phones with laptop cameras or other forms of security footage, like Paranormal Activity 4 and Unfriended: Dark Web. I imagine it’s because found footage films need static shots every once in awhile, otherwise the Shaky Cam factor is too much to take.
Just act like it doesn’t exist and you’re fine.
Image: Netflix
Ignore It
On the other end, there’s the “just make it retro so we don’t have to bother” angle—like, for instance, Stranger Things, which mined nostalgic gold from its 1980s setting and freed those kids from being tethered to anything beyond land lines and walkie-talkies. Making your horror film or series a period piece is an easy way to avoid the problem, but it does prevent films from addressing issues that affect people today.

I created a tag?
This week the novelization of the musical Dear Evan Hansen is being released. The YA book by Val Emmich, takes this beloved musical and bringing it to a wider audience. Earlier this year, I read the book for the musical—essentially, the script that included the lyrics to the songs—and I really fell in love. I then scoured the internet and watched all the clips to the show I could find and listened to the soundtrack incessantly. The novelization is just the next step in the obsession.
I have never been in any kind of theater production—I always said you could put me on a stage to dance in front of thousands of strangers, but open my mouth to talk or sing? NO WAY. However, I do have a great love for musical theater that has only grown since the openings of Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen. For the release, I thought answering questions about my love of musical theater would be fun. There are probably musical theater tags already out in the universe, but I put together these questions myself. Let’s begin:
How Many Shows Have You Seen (if you can, name them):
I’ve technically only seen one musical in NYC on Broadway (Grease), but when I was living in LA, we had a lot of opportunities to see different shows. However, I watched many movie musicals so I included those too.
Stage: The Lion King, Grease, 42nd Street, Movin’ Out, Stomp (this counts, right?), Hamilton, Book of Mormon, Finding Neverland, Chicago, An American in Paris, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Bat Boy, Urinetown, Seussical, Aladdin, Rent, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Billy Elliot
Film: Funny Face, Rent, Grease, Singing in the Rain, Cabaret, An American in Paris, My Fair Lady, Chicago, Hairspray, Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers, Nine, Dreamgirls, Jesus Christ Superstar, On the Town, Les Miserables, Annie, All That Jazz, all Disney musicals
That’s all I got, but I’m probably missing some.
2. First Show You Saw:
My dad showed me Grease the movie version at about five years old and I was obsessed, but my first live show was The Lion King at age nine. It blew my mind! My favorite Disney Movie was turned into this beautiful and colorful stage show, what more could I ask for?
3. Last Show You Saw:
The last show I saw was Aladdin in Los Angeles. I’m on the email list for when tickets go on sale for Hamilton in Jacksonville for the 2019/2020 season
4. Bucket List Shows:
Dear Evan Hansen, Waitress (both of which I saw bootleg versions on YouTube), Heathers, Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast
5. Dream Casting:
Hands down, original cast of Hamilton. I don’t know what could be better than that.
6. Favorite Obscure Show:
It may not be obscure but I’ve never met anyone else who has even heard of this show but Billy Joel’s Movin’ Out. I saw this when I was 13 and I think the main reason why my parents took me to this was because all the choreography was done by Twyla Tharp, a goddess in the dance community. I remember Act 1 being really cool, but Act 2 was kind of out there and weird. But the dancing as a whole was incredible.
7. Favorite Female Role:
Eliza from Hamilton gets me every damn time. I also think that Christine in Phantom of the Opera is one of the hardest roles to play.
8. Favorite Male Role:
Collins from Rent, Evan from Dear Evan Hansen
9. Best Soundtrack:
If you had asked me this five years ago, I would have said Rent, Chicago, and Wicked, but Hamilton kicks all their asses ten times over. Very few soundtracks can I sit there and listen in full.
10. Favorite Song:
“Candy Store” from Heathers is CONSTANTLY stuck in my head and I love it, “Turn It Off” from The Book of Mormon is genius, and the triplet of Schuyler Sisters songs from Hamilton: “The Schuyler Sisters”, “Helpless”, “Satisfied”.
11. Favorite Film Adaptation:
Nothing can compare to Cinderella starring Brandy and Whitney Houston. I also think they did a really great job of adapting Chicago for the screen. It’s a hard show to make translate in a movie setting, but it’s amazing.
12. Most Overrated Musical:
Cats. I mean I’ve never seen it but everything I know, I just don’t get it.
13. What Musical Made You Cry:
I was really REALLY obsessed with Rent for a while and it would always make me cry, but once again, Hamilton wins
14. Made You Laugh:
Book of Mormon, come on.
15. Best Choreography:
Mia Michael’s choreography has always been some of my favorite pieces of work from her time on So You Think You Can Dance and bringing it to Broadway was a little risky. However, it added so much whimsy to Finding Neverland, I loved it. An American in Paris is another one where the dancing is so important to the overall story. I remember sitting there and wishing I was up there dancing that classical lyrical jazz that is so rare nowadays.
16. Favorite Show Experience:
For my college graduation present, my family went to London. It was my first trip to Europe and I was beyond excited (it still goes down as my favorite trip I’ve ever taken).
We got tickets to Billy Elliot on the West End and I was ecstatic. I had been dying to see the show for years and to see it in London was a dream come true.
Another incredible experience was when I got to see Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal (the original Mark and Roger) in Rent. They were performing in LA for only two weeks and my sister and I got tickets. It was especially great because the first time I saw Rent it was pretty disappointing.
Oh, and Grease because it’s the only show I’ve seen on Broadway. Such a full-circle moment.
17. What Song Makes You Cry When You Hear the Opening Bars:
Oh, so many! “I’ll Cover You Reprise” from Rent, “Words Fail” from Dear Evan Hansen, “She Used to be Mine” from Waitress, and of course, “It’s Quiet Uptown” from Hamilton.
If you’ve never seen this performance of Chris Jackson singing “One Last Time” from Hamilton at the White House for President Obama, you are seriously missing out.
18. All-time Favorite Show:
It’s so hard to really pick a favorite because I’ve matured throughout my life and my favorites have changed through the years.
Nostalgia reasons: Grease
Middle school time: Rent and Chicago
High School time: Wicked
Currently: Hamilton
If you couldn’t already tell, I really like Hamilton…
Musical Theater Tag I created a tag? This week the novelization of the musical Dear Evan Hansen is being released.

THE BIG INTERVIEW … DAN BALDWIN
(Originally published Nov 2014)
BRITISH ARTIST DAN BALDWIN RECENTLY RETURNED FROM HIS STUNNING SOLO SHOW ‘END OF INNOCENCE’ IN NEW YORK CITY…AFTER 101 DIFFERENT INTERVIEWS ABOUT THE SHOW & THE NEW WORK, WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM TO TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE…
LTD/EDN… Hey Dan, you are so often described, perhaps incorrectly, as an urban artist. It doesn’t get anymore urban than NYC, so how the hell was New York? Could you ever live there?
DAN…We had that very conversation out there, could we live here? We thought Yes and No .
If we had a massive loft in the Meatpacking District… Yes!
Although the TV Shows, disclaimers and adverts… that was driving us to a No! One commercial actually announced ‘If your erection lasts for more than four hours, seek medical advice’ and they invent words like ‘ruggedise’ and ‘dramadies’!
So as long as that loft apartment has no TV, you’ll be fine! Did you get to see any more of the City on this trip, or was it just work, work work? Any favourite spots?
Some good friends flew in from Brighton, and we visited all the usual places… Central Park, Liberty Island, Trump Tower, Dakota Building, Times Square, The MoMA, Soho, Cast Iron District, Ground Zero.
The Meatpacking District was the area we liked the most – round by Chelsea market and the historic High Line. I took photos I’m going to use in my new paintings which I’ve never done before – really interesting architecture, great buildings etc.
As for that Urban Artist tag, I guess I’m not easily labelled.
My paintings can be figurative, abstract, landscape, or non-perspective and they move forwards fast – I make sculpture and paint pots, I didn’t grow up in an inner city – but I’m not from the countryside either. My work may have urban appeal, and that may link back to my passion towards skateboarding and it’s art and music. I grew up in a very exciting time with music, that has inspired me.
When I started in 1990 (or 1996 if you exclude college) there was no Urban tags, until 2006, I guess art movements or chapters need to be boxed into a category.
Like they did with Pop Art – many of the Pop artists weren’t, like Ed Rusche, who was a young exciting painter making eye catching art at the same time as Rauschenberg – who actually wasn’t POP either, but was dating Jasper Johns, who was quite POP. I guess we all just love to categorise.
Brit’s taking and breaking the US has been a UK obsession in music and art for generations. With your management team PMM at your side are you part of a new British invasion?
Hopefully – who knows – what I loved was the response to my art from such a diverse mix of people – and selling art direct to people walking in from Texas, Canada, Australia, Germany and NYC, that doesn’t happen in my experience as much in London.
Can you tell us a little more about how it works with you and PMM Art Projects?
PMM will oversee all aspects of putting a show on for me – Pat, Roger, Richard will agree dates that work best, Roger will scout out venues across the city, Pat will then agree, then employ PR to maximise on Press, Roger will spread the word ‘like a scud missile’, Richard will deal in sales and clients, the hanging of the show, and email enquiries, Chippy will deal in decal, graphic design , show preview, lists, poster and sign, Marta will help deal in all admin, and take care of logistics; like cars, flights, hotel, crates, shipping etc - Pat had 700 posters distributed across NYC, and arranged a dinner for special clients and collectors the night before the opening. We all do our bit, I focus on making the art, then photographing it all, packing ready for crates and shippers, and I am there to hang it with Richard and a specialist hanger.
Pat and Roger also oversee any specific projects I may be asked to do, other than a show, like the deal with my recent Paolo Nutini project – If I’m approached by a company for example, I will run it past PMM.
It’s like I have a backbone of support and it all will come together on a show.
Do you pay attention to the American art scene? Feel different to London/UK? Any current artists out there you like? We heard that Shepard Fairey is a collector…
Not really – I rarely get time for other UK shows. I am aware of a lot of artists and try to keep my eyes open, but I’m 6 days a week absorbed in my own work so it’s not so easy.
I went to MoMA NYC just to see if there was a Basquiat, but sadly it was in storage. I was thrilled to see my favourite Rauschenberg again ‘Canyon’, I hadn’t seen that since I was about 19. It’s a mixed media collage on canvas with a eagle stuck to the bottom on wood, with paint and cardboard and as a young artist it made me realise you can do anything in art. I also still get a buzz from seeing Warhol like the huge black red Disaster piece/car crash .
I remember going out to a show in London after my LA show and it was so pretentious compared to LA, which is very much dress down laid back in its vibe. NYC was cool, good people.
Shep isn’t a collector of mine as such, but he has a lot of art – he came to my LA show and requested to meet me, which was great as I saw him there and was like Fuck, its OBEY ! . . Weirdly I had bought myself an Obey print when I first went full time in 2006.
We had a good chat about music mainly and my art and the next day he invited us to his downtown Hollywood studio, which was amazing – he was incredibly generous and gave me 12 prints, and two books, so I pasted some onto a canvas and made a Baldwin on top of some Obeys and one was a Martha Cooper, so it’s a one off Baldwin on some Shepard Fairey Martha cooper prints! I then sent it back to him. (pictured above left).
That meeting was a highlight of our LA trip and years later I had no idea it would link up to PMM via Logan Hicks.
You have a number of other celebrity collectors. If you could collect something from a celebrity what would it be?
I think something from the classic car collection of Jay Leno would be a nice one … I don’t know.
I do want a 50s American car, a 58 Plymouth Fury, after my top 3 favourite movie Christine, or some original Westwood punk gear.
I collected badges as a kid… Now i collect stuff for my art – something from Elvis’s Gracelands, perhaps or a bit of James Dean’s wardrobe, or his conga drums. One of Andy Warhol’s striped t-shirts would be cool or a Basquiat scrap of paper or something from his studio – similarly something from Bacon’s studio. A drum kit from Adam Ant was on my childhood wish list… They gave one away on ”Jim’ll Fix it’.
We covet inanimate objects – is it nostalgia? or sentimentalism? There, I invented a word! Or maybe not. I have a cabinet full of objects we collect. Old children’s dice, a dead Bee, a cats whisker, it’s memory and object – I like nostalgia.
Your Cyclone piece was recently used by Paolo Nutini on his album sleeve artwork – if you could design any album for any band through history what would it be?
Album art used to be so important, I never forget the power Frankie Goes to Hollywood had with their first album, and the symbolism they used, the heart, the bullet, the crucifix, the sperm. It made a big impact on me, as did Adam Ant, but that was more his look and that great logo.
So did Santa bring you anything exciting this year? What was on your list to Santa? Did any goodies cross over with your son’s list?
We escaped the misery of Dads Army, Quality Street, the Two Ronnies repeat from 1978 and you know, all the rest of it and celebrated Rome.
Is finding out that Santa doesn’t exist the real ‘End of Innocence’?
He doesn’t?
Ha, so enough of Christmas, it’s a New Year…What’s up next?
Thursday (Jan 8th 2015) sees the opening of a new print show alongside Peter Blake at the GX Gallery (www.gxgallery.com/exhibition/fame-promise) I have made 5 new works on paper for it.
I also have a lot of loose ends since NYC, some commissions to do, two charity events coming up, and making new art. I am itching to continue my SUBVERT series and make more bronzes.
There will be a lot going on over the next 12 months, we are also planning to move and relocate the studio. Plus I’m already planning my new show! In my head anyway!
Lastly, talking of your head, one question about the Show…. We noticed a splendid hat, move over Pharrell…Where did you get that hat, where did you get that hat?
Ha, I’m not brave enough for ‘Child of the Jago’, yet, but you know, all in time .. but in NYC it was essential.
I like the look of some of these www.nickfouquet.com
In the 90’s, or earlier, when England was full of casuals and mullets, if I said then imagine if all the young casuals started to dress like it was the 1940’s – braces, hats, cloth caps, brogue boots, beards you would have laughed – but now it’s true!
Everything comes round in circles. Look at Duchamp, putting an urinal in a gallery in 1917, how ahead of his time was he? Anyway you know the old saying ‘if you want to get ahead, get a hat ‘…1934 that slogan was created.
Thank you Dan for your time, we look forward to new work in 2016.

ANSWER ALL OF THEM!!!! A L L O F T H E M! ! ! !
JFC WOMAN THAT’S 216 BLOODY QUESTIONS IN A ROW
ALRIGHTY THEN but I’m gonna put it under a Read More cause... yea, this is gonna get long I bet
1: My name?
My full name is Marissa Leigh Bell, but... that’s just a dumb name honestly and the initials are literally MLB
2: Do I have any nicknames?
Yes, and that is obviously Dusk! Or DJ Dusk, or Midnight...
My IRL nicknames however are stupid. There’s Rissy, Rissa, Rissa Roo (one of my hospital techs call me that...), Sissy... they’re all dumb and I’m the only one who gets nicknames.
3: Zodiac sign?
Libra~!!
4: Video game I play to chill, not to win?
Hmm... suppose that’ll have to be Starbound!! I often times like to open up Starbound and just find some new goals, whether it be item finding on achievement hunting. I guess another game I like to do is osu!, but I dunno how chill I am on that game pff
5: Book/series I reread?
Honestly, the ONLY readable thing I ever would reread is the one and only book I ever liked; And Then There Were None by Agatha Christine
6: Aliens or ghosts?
Ghosts, defiantly~!! I even have my very own EVP recorder!
7: Writer I trust enough to read whatever they write?
I... don’t honestly read that many things except for like, online game journalists. Which I don’t even know if they count. (And if they do, then I’d say Jim Sterling since he’s a funny guy)

I’ll scratch myself if I have nothing to scratch, and that was the case when they were doing the root canal. I scratch subconsciously, so I have NO idea I’m causing damage.
