Podcasts for intermediate/advanced Norwegian listening practice

Finding Norwegian podcasts has always been a bit daunting for me, because I don't listen to a lot of podcasts in general, but over the past weeks I've discovered some that I really enjoy!

1. Lær norsk nå!

This podcast (norsknivå B1 – B2) cover all sorts of interesting social, cultural and political topics - coffee, the Cold War, right-wing populism in Norway, feminism, Sámi history, etc - as well as aspects of the Norwegian language 🔡 You can listen to all the episodes and find transcripts for them (starting with episode 5) here. The host, Marius, is originally from Nærbø (in Rogaland, near Stavanger), and speaks in both his dialect and also standard østnorsk depending on the episode.

2. Relax With Slow Norwegian

I'm a tinglehead (someone who loves listening to ASMR ✨), so I was super excited to find this podcast and Lene's YouTube channel! She speaks bergensk and has lots of great episodes and videos dedicated to learning Norwegian centered around a specific topic.

3. Norskpodden

An awesome podcast (norsknivå B1 – B2) with episodes ranging from grammar to salary negotiation to the the history of queer rights in Norway. Episodes and transcripts can be found here. I find the transcripts helpful, because the host Camila speaks at a quite natural pace (so it gives me a huge confidence boost whenever I can understand most of an episode without the transcripts 😎).

4. Nylig Norsk

This is a fun little podcast created by students at the University of Bergen. They speak a lot slower than the other podcasts here, which sounds a bit unnatural, but that makes it quite easy to understand (norsknivå A2-B1). The topics are engaging and there's transcripts here for each episode. I like the "city-trip"/regional episodes, and it felt really cool having been to some of the places they talked about! ✈️

5. Språktalk

This podcast isn't aimed at people learning Norwegian, which is good practice for listening to natural-sounding dialogue. The episodes are all about languages and linguistic topics, so if that's your cup of tea I highly suggest giving it a listen. They had a German guest for one episode who spoke Norwegian sooooo well, it gave me hope for myself 😂

6. Forklart

Forklart, another podcast that isn't aimed at people learning Norwegian, takes a topic from the news (sometimes domestic news, but more often international news) and breaks it down into a compact 15-minute episode 🗞 There is one episode every day, so if you're interested in keeping up with current political events in Norwegian, this is a great podcast to listen to! Although keep in mind that the podcast is run by Aftenposten (as is Språktalk), which has historically been a centre-right newspaper.

Charting the rise of Oasis in summer 1994 via archives of Music & Media (pan-European music industry magazine in the 90s). Issue dates from each clip left to right: 13 August; 27 August; 3 September; 17 September; 17 September.

Radio reports in industry magazines tell the story of Oasis climbing the UK charts and breaking into Europe in late summer 1994. Music & Media in the 90s was the European version of America’s Billboard magazine. While the record charts were the focus, each issue also included a section in new releases (both singles and albums) as well as station reports. Each week radio stations would report their lists to the magazine and include what songs they've added to their rotation. The way I understand it, A lists are played more than B lists, which are played more than N lists.

I went through the August-September 1994 issues of Music & Media searching “Oasis” for any relevant clips.

Note: Keep in mind all dates reflect the issue that the content was in and that there was a slight lag (generally 1-2 weeks) in industry news outside of the UK.

Following Live Forever’s release

The third Oasis single, Live Forever, gets added to the BBC1's N list on 6th of August upon its release, due to consistent interest in each single since Columbia (White Label Demo) in Dec 1993.

The single also makes the B list for Virgin 1215 AM London. The next week, Forth RFM in Edinburgh adds the song to its A list. One week later, the song gets a small mention in the New Releases review section of the magazine:

Is it a fata morgana, or is Oasis for real? We've had so many over-hyped British bands now, that we prefer to take a back seat. But then again we haven't heard such good pop since the La's.

Two weeks later, 27th of August, Live Forever reaches no. 10 on the UK singles chart.

The magazine reports this in a small blurb describing them as "Scottish band Oasis", possibly due to the concentration of the band’s support being in Scotland. Radio Clyde in Glasgow adds the song to its rotation. MTV Europe also adds the video to its new videos list.

At the start of September, Definitely Maybe gets a review in the new album releases, where Live Forever is called “a masterpiece.” I should add industry mags are typically dry and not prone to hyperbole.

Radio Clyde's head Bobby Hain writes that Oasis has become "local favourites" since performing at T in the Park festival a few weeks before.

At the same time, Live Forever gets added to more radio playlists. Red Dragon FM in Cardiff adds the song to its B list. In Europe, Radio 21 in Brussels, Het Station in Hilversum (Holland), and Polskie Radio 2 in Warsaw (Poland) add it to their A list.

By the 10th of September MTV Europe adds the Live Forever video to its Buzz Bin. This week Sveriges Radio in Stockholm (Sweden) adds the song to its A list, with Radio Stella FM 106 in Helsingberg following the next week.

But it takes until the 17th of September for Oasis to get a full length article in the magazine, entitled "Oasis Is No Mirage Of the British Hope and Glory" (above). It mentions the skepticism in Europe of British bands that don’t live up to the hype. But argues Oasis is the real deal. It singles out Sweden as the first European market where the band has broken out from the UK. It calls the band’s songs “retro pop,” lists some influences from Neil Young to T-Rex, and leaves with the idea Oasis seems like a “universal band” that can translate to other countries.

The case study of Sweden

The band plays the Hultsfred festival in Sweden 13 August 1994. This is also the site of the classic Gallagher interview where Noel claims their music will stand the test of time. There’s also bootlegs of a radio broadcast of the show, but it’s not clear if it aired live at the time or was simply recorded and broadcasted later in 95.

Noel and Liam both bragged about making headlines in the country for starting a bar brawl after they played this festival. Did this play a factor in the band’s early chart success there?

Notably mentioned by Music & Media, by the 3rd of September, Swedish radio stations are already picking up Live Forever, while most of Europe is still working through older singles.

Sweden becomes the first country outside of the UK for Definitely Maybe to chart (even a week before Ireland), entering the chart at no. 14. The album reaches 4 by 17th of September (to compare the album is at 9 in Ireland the same week).

Along with sales elsewhere, it’s enough to pull the album to 10 in the European charts.

Did the bar brawl help album sales in Sweden?

When looking at Oasis gigs in August/September it’s not surprising Sweden is the first to chart. They play Paris in June and New York in July. But Sweden is the first place outside the UK they have two gigs in less than one month. The festival gig in August and another one a few days after the first album is released.

Now I know controversy sells is a 90s maxim and Oasis used outrage to their advantage. But I remain skeptical of the claim they made front page headlines from the bar brawl. It seems to me that’d be a clipping you could find online if it happened. I don’t have access to Swedish papers to directly verify the pages (if anyone has access, lmk!). But I could do a quick search of archives of two popular newspapers, a morning newspaper and an evening one, to see "oasis" mentions in 1994:

While “oasis” gets mentioned a few times before August (some nonband mentions including a guy named Kenny Oasis drive earlier mentions), it’s steady afterward in reference to the band.

The results of a search for “oasis” in Dagens Nyheter in 1994 includes a thumbnail of the page and the relevant excerpt to check context. Below are the excerpts visible for August/September and a rough translation (any Swedish fans out there correct me if I’m wrong).

The 11th of August has a short article on page 20 about the Hultsfred festival they were set to play on the 13th.

On the 15th on page 24, the band gets mentioned in a review of the festival:

När Oasis spelade vid sextiden var det väldigt mycket folk i Saharatältet

(When Oasis played at six o'clock there were a lot of people in the Sahara tent)

On the 18th in the entertainment section of ads, Definitely Maybe as a pending Oasis album is mentioned. There’s also an ad for another show with Oasis on the bill with Pavement at the top and Jeff Buckley. This is most likely the 2 September show at the Gino.

On the 24th, Liam’s face makes an appearance on page 21 along with other band/artist photos. The photo caption reads “Liam Gallagher i Oasis renodlar det som andra påbörjat.” (Liam Gallagher's Oasis refines what others have started.) with a photo credit to “matthias bardå Filmiskt” so good bet it’s from the Hultsfred festival.

The 31st of August shows the closest Oasis gets to the front page at the time. On page 2, Live Forever is mentioned in a list of things to complain about (an opinion piece? satire? it’s not clear): Yvs över exportaktiernas uppgång, yvs över Oasis ”Live Forever”, men herregud, att yvas över ett land, ett stycke mark, det är väl. (Howl about the rise of export shares, howl about Oasis' "Live Forever", but oh my god, howl about a country, a piece of land, that's fine.) The mention does suggest the song is already recognizable to Swedish readers by the time Definitely Maybe is released.

Oasis at the Hultsfred festival is still being talked about 2nd of September (page 77):

Beatles anses vara en inte oviktig förebild för Oasis. Och det bekräftades i Hultsfred.

(The Beatles are considered a not unimportant role model for Oasis. And it was confirmed in Hultsfred.)

On page 75 the same day, an ad for the Gino show that night. But Oasis is now top billing (no Pavement).

Same issue, the show gets mentioned on earlier pages (page 20) in context of the band’s climb:

Oasis klättrar raskt och spelar dessutom i Stockholm i dag, fredag.

(Oasis is climbing fast and is also playing in Stockholm today, Friday.)

The rest of September, Oasis gets 8 mentions in the paper on pages 20-29.

Now without access to each article in full, I can’t be certain there is no mention of the bar brawl in all of this. But these excerpts do suggest that it’s a nonissue at least in this paper. Their festival show is well attended, people remember it, another show is set for a few weeks later and is advertised as the postfestival chatter ramps up the album release excitement. They return a second time for more buzz and the album hits the top 5 a few weeks later. But obviously that’s boring so bar brawl narrative it is.

Have you ever worked on the L'Anse aux Meadows site, or done any research/reading on Vinland?

I'm especially wondering your thoughts as it implies that European settlement (in Canada at least) predates the British and French colonies.

That, and Finland wanted you to call him Papa.

"Finland? ... Mr. Timo never had overseas colonies. You could try n' argue that Mr. Jan and Mr. Björn had hands in my raising with Nieuw-Nederland and Nya Sverige. But those were founded after Arthur's denizens founded Jamestown, with those two colonies being chartered in 1614 and founded in 1638, respectively. An' there's so much more I could say about 'em, but then we'd be ignorin' the fact that even Mr. Antonio's people were consistently here in what would become me way, way before Lord Father and Francis. St. Augustine, Florida, was founded in 1565, and that was after several failed Spanish attempts in Florida and the East Coast. That earliest attempt was San Miguel de Guadalupe in 1526, in what'd become South Carolina in the modern day.

"An' I can't speak for Mattie - and I shouldn't, but he's busy - but apart from the Norse settlement of L'Anse aux Meadows, I think the Spanish and Portuguese Empires were the first to claim Canadian land as theirs. But L'Anse has produced over 800 artifacts that can be traced to Norse origins, so it's hard to deny that! And the sod-and-wood frame structures? That's damn cool! Now I really wanna know more, sitting here reading some basics. Maybe...well, I'm not sure, but maybe I could do some more research for us and make a future post with more about L'Anse aux Meadows and the Vinland mythos!"

Cultural divides. Life in Sweden:

New problems in the Sverige Saga: My residence card is valid for only one year instead of two and so now I am not able to get a Swedish Identity Number which is gonna make my life so much harder. *Insert Prince Wilhelm voice, "How can anyone live like this for två fucking år!"*

But that's not what this post is about and it's not about culture shock either. Before I got here I was really worried about the idea of studying in Europe in general due to their stricter standards when it comes to school. More readings, harder coursework, serious studying, and more accurate informed knowledge. I hear it all the time, "Americans are so dumb, they're bad at geography!" and then I think about how I've never even taken a single geography class. That reared it's face today in my English Lexicography class. We were talking about the evolution of written language, the roman empire, and the middle ages, and I realized we had never touched on any of those subjects in Middle or High school. I could just feel how Eurocentric the professors curriculum was. Anytime a professor brings up America, I perk up because only then can I finally provide some insight.

Then I thought about how I was the only American in that class, in my program, damn near everywhere actually. And I don't want to be the resident "knowledge of America" keeper. I don't want to have to answer and speak for all things American in every class. But I also kind of learned that I don't have to. Because these Europeans speak on American issues as if they understood everything about all Americanisms. It's like they're eager to be the white savoir voice (whatever the equivalent of that would be, geographically). That's gonna make me turn into the class arguer, always debating and contradicting everyone's statements. I'm so nervous for the next couple of lectures where we talk about political correctness in dictionaries because of how American this controversy is. I don't want to defend who should and shouldn't say the N-word just because I'm the closest ethnically towards that experience.

So the cultural divide here is more about the difference in education and how much of a strange ghostly presence it has in the back of my mind. In my other class, we're analyzing each other's Bachelor's Thesis. I've been grouped with a Swedish girl and a Hungarian(?) girl. Both of their thesis's are structured exactly the same. Neatly organized with an Table of Contents, Index, Appendix, all of that. See, when I was doing my B.A. I was working alongside a pretty well known and respected Anthropologist/Writer, so I was confident in the work I was producing. I thought my paper looked pretty professional. Until I took a look at theirs and realized that things as small as paper formatting can be different in Europe and my just isn't as adequate. It's unorganized, missing all of those details. It doesn't made me feel "dumb" exactly but I wonder if my classmates have looked at my paper and went, "what is this garbage?"

And it always comes down to worrying about whether or not I fulfil the Dumb American category.

Lund, Sverige 🇸🇪

Idéernas stad, the city of ideas.

If Agnes was a city, she would be Lund in the province of Skåne in southern Sweden. With just over 90,000 inhabitants, Lund is the 11th most populous city in the country. It is also home to the infamous Lunds universitet, otherwise known as Lund University. The research institute dates back to the 1660s and has led to the development of numerous pioneering inventions and theories. Lund University is also where Agnes received her undergraduate degree in forensic science and forensic psychology.

As an intellect, Agnes prides herself on knowledge and how she can use said knowledge to better the world around her. It is why she sought an education from the top university in all of Sweden. She also felt at home in the welcomed nature of Lund. The city's community is built around the university; and that is something she was drawn to.

Agnes is the sort of individual who wants to surround herself with those in which she is intellectually compatible. She looks for that elevated conversation, that bond that forms when there is mutual understanding of a topic. Much like the city of Lund, she thrives on the foundations of a community of like-minded individuals striving for a better understanding of the world and all its beautifully historic cultures.

Didn't think to get any pics until after we'd already fallen on this like starving beasts. But, I couldn't resist baking some new season rhubarb and aging apples we already had up into a crumble this evening.

Not the most attractive dish ever, but delicious with some ice cream on top.

I ended up basically throwing together a cross between these two reference recipes:

Basically, adding some candied ginger to the filling sounded (and indeed was!) pretty awesome, but I preferred to make the easier Swedish-style crumb topping using melted butter and a little syrup for extra yum. I also threw about half a teaspoon each of ground cardamom and cinnamon into the oat mixture as suggested in another Swedish take, because why not. It did make for a good flavor combo.

This one ended up a little heavier on the crumb topping to apple/rhubarb ratio than I had in mind, once everything cooked down in the oven. But, it was very welcome anyway.

R: I don't wear perfume or cologne, I think it can be nice for other people as long as it's not too powerful a scent

E: I wear it to parties or special occasions, but not in a daily basis, no. But mostly because I forget lol. Also, my soap, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner already have smells, I don't need another one.

Mondi's sustainable packaging with Scan Sverige

Sustainable packaging and paper specialist Mondi has collaborated with Scan Sverige to create a polypropylene (PP) based mono-material packaging designed for recycling.

HKScan Sweden, having over a century experience in responsible Swedish food production, uses Mondi’s WalletPack for its Pärsons brand’s range of sliced ham, salami, and plant-based products, starting from March 2024, Mondi said in a press release.

Mondi’s WalletPack is a PP based solution designed for recyclability. This packaging is purposefully developed with recycling in mind, aligning with our customer’s goals, and NPA's missions as an approved producer responsibility organization dedicated to advancing circular and traceable material recycling.

WalletPack can be effectively sorted by Site Zero, Europe’s largest and most advanced plastic recycling facility located in Sweden and is thereby contributing to a circular economy. It replaces the previous solution, which was an unrecyclable multi-material pack that consisted of PET-PE and PA-PE laminates.

Featuring a top and bottom film, Mondi’s WalletPack has an easy peel mechanism ensuring consumer convenience. Created with a protective high oxygen barrier for a longer shelf-life in combination with inside print, it also offers good printability to communicate the brand and product messages.

“It was a pleasure working with Scan Sverige, bringing over a century of experience in responsible Swedish food production to the table. The team closely oversees the full farm to fork value chain, which seamlessly aligns with our values. Throughout the trial process, we were both focusing on the same clear goals: to best protect the food while developing packaging that could deliver from a sustainability standpoint, being designed for recycling,” said Helene Brynell, regional sales Nordic, consumer flexibles, Mondi.

Einar Ahlstrom, material specialist at NPA explains, “Multi-layer laminates, such as PET/PE and PA/PE, are commonly used in diverse flexible plastic packaging, limiting the potential for material recycling. To enhance and facilitate more efficient material recycling, there is a need to shift towards using mono-material in plastic packaging. It is encouraging to note that Scan Sverige has introduced a novel packaging solution for Pärsons, in collaboration with Mondi. This alternative not only replaces traditional multi-layer laminates but also proves to be more conducive to material recycling.”

Scan Sverige and Mondi initiated discussions about the recently introduced mono-material packaging two years ago. Nya 10-spårs albumet “Songs in the Key of Collaboration” från Martin Høybye är ett soundtrack till en lång resa av interkulturellt samskapande och forskning. Albumet släpps 3 maj via Songrise Produktion. “Prompted by a serious water crisis in Cape Town, I set out to explore songwriting as a response to anthropogenic environmental impact, broadly speaking. The aim was to both explore how songwriting might shed light on lived experience, and to develop songwriting as a research practice, by making songwriting accessible to others and collaboratively share stories in this way”, säger Martin Høybye ”Songs in the Key of Collaboration" är en ny Songrise-produktion som släpps 3 maj 2024 genom Songcrafter Music. Albumet producerades av Dennis Ahlgren, och är en del av Martin Høybyes konst- och praktikbaserade doktorsavhandling ”Songs in the Key of Collaboration - Engaging with Anthropocene moments through personal and collaborative songwriting," (Aarhus University, 2023). Fem år senare ser han tillbaka på en uppsjö av möten i det projekt som gav honom en doktorsexamen från Aarhus Universitet 2023. Upplägget var inspirerat av konceptet "antropocen" - en term som antyder att mänskligheten har blivit en kraft som utövar global geologisk påverkan och skapar en framtid som inte alls är den vi hoppas på. “These crises will continue to impact the planet for generations to come. Droughts, floods, sea level rise, wild weather events, and resulting changes to sense of place and identity will follow. We may find ourselves grieving the loss of certain animals and plants, the loss of stability and familiarity. We may indeed experience a feeling described by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht as solastalgia – when we feel homesick yet are still at home,” säger Martin Høybye Låtskrivandet fungerar som ett svar på den miljöpåverkan som han kallar "antropocenens överväldigande". Låtarna har skrivits i två olika miljöer. Under 2019 arbetade Martin med att mäta olika erfarenheter av miljöproblem i efterdyningarna av Day Zero-vattenkrisen i Kapstaden. Den andra miljön var Covid-19-pandemin i Danmark 2020–2021. Låtskrivarsamarbetspartners har kommit från Sydafrika, Danmark, Demokratiska republiken Kongo, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Ghana, England och Sverige. Tio av 35 låtar är presenterade på albumet. De omfattar möten mellan känslor och idéer från olika människor, länder och levnadssituationer. I samband med albumet släpps videon till låten “Dream of the Anthropocene” som ställer frågan om hur vi ska närma oss varandra när världen är i kris.

“Working with a team of artists and practitioners, I will work to spread this approach more broadly. To inspire others to share their practice, share their art. A song is a drop in a very big pond, but I believe in ripple effects and taking action by sharing ourselves, our experience, and knowledge. That may sound radical, but I believe inaction and non-sharing is actually more radical,” säger Martin Martin Høybye har släppt sju fullängdsalbum, senast "The Hourglass Sessions" från 2019. Han har skrivit låtar i samarbete med människor i Sydafrika, DRC, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Ghana, England, Sverige och Danmark sedan 2018. Martin Høybye har även skrivit två musikrelaterade böcker (2010, 2016).
