Carolin Paul

Wounded lions can bite too
Chief defense player Nebojsa Simovic, first scorer in qualifying Milos Vujovic and yesterday also the second goalkeeper of the national handball team of Montenegro, Milos Bozovic. They all fell away, little hope of playing in the European Championships still exists only for Christmas, but surrender is a forbidden word.
Even the wounded, the “lions” threaten to “bite” the world handball giant, Croatia, at the opening of the first Continental Championship with 24 selections. The “fiery” have problems as well, they have lost four players, plus the written-off Manuel Strlek, but Lin Cervar's problems are minimal compared to those faced by Zoran Roganovic.
Despite the fact that Croatia is an absolute favorite, the team that made world and Olympic champions Denmark their first qualification defeat after eight years believes it can lead to a sensation at Stathale in Graz.
– We have finally arrived in Graz, looking forward to the start of the European Championship. I hope that we will be combative, as we were against Denmark and Ukraine, and that we will show what we are here for. I sincerely hope that we will not only enter the first victory, but also qualify for the second round. We cannot promise anything but fight – said Nemanja Grbovic.
The Croats are Group A favorites, perhaps a better chance of winning against the remaining two rivals, Serbia and Belarus.
– A heavy group is waiting for us. Croats want a medal, there are more Serbs and Belarussians, and we came to win the first points. And so we change the series, not the bad results, but the series of matches that we failed to win at the European Championships – emphasized Stefan Čavor.
Weclar's right back notes that injuries are a big problem for the team.
– Vujovic got injured three days ago, it was hard for us, because he is an important player, also Bozovic. He will not play against Croatia, and I hope he will be ready for the next two games, which are more important for us – said the 25-year-old Budvanin.

Defense against the fiery might be key.
– Croats in all positions have great players and it will be difficult for us. The most important thing is to stay strong in defense – said Cavor.
Grbovic believes that Chervar's team is not invincible.
– Each team has weak points, we just need to use them. They too have injury issues, but it is only when we meet in the field that we will see what will happen. Whoever has a better day and cooler heads will win.
For the popular Grba, this will be the fourth major championship, and the duel with Croatia will be the 10th chance to finally score the first point, maybe two.
– I hope that the story from the previous championships will not be repeated, when we promised and did nothing. We learned lessons, we have to get ready for the first game – concluded the 29-year-old pivot from Pljevlja.
Selector Roganovic was badly injured by Bozovic, who misses the premiership due to shoulder pain and is also doubtful about the championship's continuation.
– I wish there were no more injuries like this. Yes European Championship is very important for all of us, we all came eager to prove ourselves, but we decided to rest Milos in the first game and maybe make a change later if we make it possible for the last two matches in the group against Serbia and Belarus. I hope he will be ready for these two games – said selector Zoran Roganovic.
A shoulder injury requires a 10-day break.
– This kind of injury takes a little more days than we have. We will do everything, but I would not like to risk his health and career. So we will sit together for a few days and decide how to proceed – Roganovic is clear.
In the first Group A match, also in Graz, Serbia and Belarus play at 18.15.
Montenegro has been playing against Serbia in two days on Saturday, and on Monday, January 13, against Belarus. The two first-placed teams, from four national teams, will advance to the second phase.
Backstroke match with Slovenia
If they had known what would happen to them at the friendly game with Slovenia, they would have surely refused in the Handball Federation of Montenegro the invitation made while Veselin Vujovic was leading the “land”. A convincing defeat (37:22), much more pained by the loss of two aces – Milos Vujovic then renewed his heel injury and Milos Bozovic injured his shoulder, so he will miss the duel with Croatia and possibly the rest of the European Championship.
– There was contact in the preparatory game with Slovenia and I felt a slight pain in my shoulder, which later increased. In all likelihood, it is a biceps tendon that needs 10 days to two weeks to heal. We do not have that period, we will see after Croatia … I hope to be on the team – Bozovic said.
A new Zagreb player tried to train, but it didn't work.
– I did one training, it was okay, but I felt similar pain on the other. The staff and I decided to sacrifice the first game, to get on time and recover. Hope everything goes better.
Croats: Let's get out our bloody knees
Croats were one of the greatest powers in world handball at the end of XX and beginning of XXI century, but in the last seven years they have only one medal – bronze at the European Championship 2016 in Poland.
Lino Cervar hopes to crown his second term at the helm of the fiery with a medal, with players warning that it will not be easy against Montenegro at the start of the EHF Euro.
– We are waiting for a great team, which beat the world champion Denmark in Montenegro. He plays a very aggressive defense 5-1, 4-2, sometimes turns into 3-3, so we will have to be very concentrated. Last year we had a very unpleasant experience with Brazil and that should be a reminder to us – says Captain Domagoj Duvnjak.
The lively and important screw of the defense, Zeljko Musa, emphasized the aggressive defense and the shooters of Montenegro.
– Rival plays aggressive defense and has great shooters, which we will pay attention to. We need to help the goalkeepers defend as easily as possible, in order to give as many easy counter goals as possible.
David Mandic, who will be the first choice on the left wing due to his failure to call Manuel Sttrlek and injury to Lovro Mihic, announced the match in an interesting way.
– Let's go and beat the bloody knees off the field.
