Elphaba's eyes remain fixated on Galinda's hand, keeping her grounded in reality. The light pressure reminds her where she is, that she is still loved, even the people who provide that love are different. She sighs- it only makes sense that Galinda would want to know why this man who so clearly loved her was longer in her life.
A frown crosses her lips as she squeezes Galinda's hand. The reality of his death hurt just as much as her Mama's.
"He died. I was only six years old..."
She bites her lip, remembering that awful day.
"It was my fault... I can't blame Father for being so angry with me, not after that."
Galinda's eyes go to the butterfly that's been decorating their window. It's one of the prettiest things they have in their room and she's always admired it, even before they became friends.
The switch from father to papa does not go unnoticed by Galinda who gasps a little at that, frowning and holding Elphaba's hand sweetly, thumb brushing against the back of it.
"Oh, Elphie... That sounds..."
Like you had a family once. Like you were happy.
"...wonderful."
She's afraid to ask, but she has to know, so she squeezes Elphie's hand and takes a deep breath.
"What... What happened to him? I mean... You don't need to tell me with detail if you don't want to."
#ooc this is very similar to the milkflower thing where frex is blaming elphie and elphie blaming herself#but it's very much not her fault#it's an external thing#c: elphaba#v: defying gravity#thegaissilent

ranting for a bit because the entire scene where elphaba tells glinda her secret makes me go rabid and actually makes me want to chew concrete because not only is it actually absolutely heartbreaking to see just how deeply elphaba believes all the horrible things her father reinforces; how she thinks she's responsible for her mother's death and is the reason for nessarose's disability even when it's literally not her fault in any way and is actually DIRECTLY her father's fault.
and just the fact that elphaba tells glinda all this and tells glinda her father hates her and that everything's her fault and glinda looks at her and she's absolutely heartbroken to hear elphaba saying all these things and she becomes the first person in elphaba's life to look her in the eyes and tell her that none of that is true and that it is NOT her fault, it was NEVER her fault despite whatever anyone said.
ik a lot of ppl see glinda's "it was the milkflower's fault" line as a very sort of shallow take by glinda (I'm explaining it poorly but ik some ppl wonder why she didn't just call out governor thropp directly) but I've got to disagree with that take because personally I think glinda heard elphaba talking, heard her describe her secret and heard how her father forced her mother to chew milkflowers constantly during her pregnancy all because he was afraid the baby would come out green like elphaba and she heard all this and she hears how elphaba thinks this is all her fault.
and yk they're roommates. glinda sees the way elphaba talks about her father and how even though she says that he hates her in an almost casual manner despite how she says he's justified for hating her, elphaba still loves her father and she still wants to do right by him and she still wants him to love her.
so glinda knows that elphaba will not listen to her if she straight up tells her that her father's fucking mental and completely wrong and that it was all his fault and that she's probably going to bludgeon him to death. she knows that elphaba will never accept this and she knows that right now it won't do any good for anyone.
so instead she tells elphaba it was the milkflower's fault. and she looks her in the eyes and she tells her this was never your fault you shouldn't think this was ever your fault and anyone who ever told you that it was your fault was completely and totally wrong and I need you to know this.
because the primary concern isn't about telling elphaba she's got a shitty dad the primary concern is telling elphaba that it is not her fault for simply existing. and to let her know that there is nothing wrong with her and that there is someone here, right now, who loves and cares for her so so much and wants her to know that. that there is someone who will hold her hand and who will tell her that they are there for her and that she is fine the way she is. that she is loved.
#wicked 2024#wicked#CHOWDAH THINKING ABOUT GLINDA AND ELPHABA FOR TOO LONG GOT ME FEELIN UNWISE#honestly without kidding#major props to ariana grande and cynthia erivo's acting#the tiny details make everything honestly#like the changes in facial expression and the way their voices change and all#10/10 we love to see it#makes me go feral#i will actually never stop thinking about it#and will just go analyze this shit for the rest of my life#but it's fine it's fine#dw about it ill be fine#i have to go to bed#but what about my 40000 page essay on them yk#glinda upland#elphaba thropp#gelphie#i despise the thought that glinda's vapid and stupid honestly#because we are consistently shown that that is not the case#she may be airheaded at times and she is extremely privileged which leads to her being shallow at times#but she is NOT stupid or unaware#we are clearly shown how she notices things and picks up on things#and IK she very clearly sees the complicated relationship elphaba has with her father#and she sees how vulnerable elphaba is being with her#and she decides to reassure her#because that's what she NEEDS rn#but she is going to sneak out later and kill governor thropp#that is a side quest for later yk

Do you have any new gelphie pairing faves or analyses from your Great Wicked Watch?
OOH THANK YOU FOR ASKING
things are still In Progress, so really the only true conclusion I've reached so far is one I already could have told you: the earlier gelphies are way less gay. Like, mad respect bc they were what we had at the time and there's still plenty there to dream on, but compared to how later actresses play them it's really NOT that queer of an interpretation of either role, and isn't as much to my taste. Chenzel just doesn't Do It for me; Megan Hilty's Glinda is deeply affectionate but it's in such an obvious "hey soul sister" way I don't see My Glinda in her.
some random thoughts in no particular order:
I was very taken with Julia Murney and Kendra Kassebaum's chemistry, though I didn't find any one performance of theirs where I felt like it sustained throughout both acts the way I'd like.
I can now say with confidence it's no WONDER I didn't realize I was a Glinda Girlie in my youth, bc my first live Glinda was Jennifer Laura Thompson and her Glinda is among the colder ones (though not as cold as Kate Reinders SHE DOESN'T EVEN TOUCH ANA GASTEYER ONCE IN FOR GOOD GIRL WHAT GIVES). like it does make me LAUGH when, for example, Galinda says "but that was the milkflowers' fault" as though it ends in "you moron" but it is not my Preferred Reading
(on the other hands Nessas who embrace being a self-absorbed cunt start to finish are fabulous and I love them)
I've surprised myself with how fondly I latched onto Shoshana "Smol Bean" Bean's portrayal of Elphaba bc I usually prefer my Elphies far more acerbic, but her view of the character is so crystal-clear and consistent throughout I can't help but be taken with it
more Elphabas should do the "I'm melting" pose during "so happy I could melt" the way Stephanie J Block does
it is very hard to find a good Fiyero who actually has chemistry with BOTH girls, but a bad Boq will lowkey ruin the show in a way a bad Fiyero honestly doesn't
more Dr Dillamonds should refrain from touching their students sir you are a PROFESSOR, SIR--
my inventing something post was inspired by Annaleigh Ashford's first Popular, which I feel really captured something critical in how it unfolded of like... it's like you can almost watch Galinda start getting addicted, it's this compulsion, how the touches become more frequent and more intimate and she doesn't understand why but can't seem to control herself, and it's such a classic pre-gay-awakening "I don't know I just think she's REALLY COOL and want to be her BEST FRIEND" take on it that I loved
our rewatch has just entered the Katie Rose Clarke era, and as someone who started with her and Willemijn it's fascinating to go back to her first tour with Carmen and see how genuinely she WAS trying to play the scenes with Fiyero straight which she eventually gave up on lmao
okay I could probably keep yammering but I'm gonna cut it off there for now

in act i, elphaba blames herself that her dad made her mom chew milkflowers all day in an effort to ensure their next child didn't come out green, causing her mom to die in childbirth. glinda says That was the milkflowers' fault Not yours. a lot of people give this scene flak, saying she should have said it was elphaba's father's fault instead, but i genuinely think this is intentional. in act ii, glinda tells elphaba not to blame herself for nessarose's death, it was a house that killed her. and elphaba goes You don't think someone PUT this house on top of her?. & it was madame morrible of course.

Laurel's Elphaba reacts to "but that was the milkflowers' fault, not yours" like this is the dumbest most irrelevant thing she's ever heard but also like she is now in love with Galinda for saying it

Something I found interesting after watching Wicked Part 1, is how Galinda phrases her reassurance that Elphaba isn't to blame for her mother's death and sister's disability, "It's the milkflowers' fault, Elphie, not yours." Not her father's fault, for making her mother chew the milkflowers, nor her mother for going along with it, nor even any hypothetical third party who might have told Elphaba's parents doing so was safe, but specifically the milkflowers, which as plants certainly had no say in the matter. And I do think that indicates something in Galinda's mindset: she's willing to admit that people are sometimes treated badly for things that aren't their fault, but she can't or won't make the jump to blaming people who actually had power in the situation.
#wicked#wicked 2024#glinda upland#now obviously galinda was probably right not to apportion blame to mrs. thropp#both because we don't know how much agency she actually had#and more importantly because there's no reason to upset elphaba by suggesting that her dead mother was partially to blame for her own death

I originally wrote this as an anon ask, but I feel like I need to share it with the world.
So, crackfic AU where Nessarose was born first. She's still disabled and the beloved child of her father, but she also shares a room with Glinda.
When her mother, Melena, was first pregnant, Governer Thropp was extremly protective of her because this is his WIFE who is PREGNANT with his FIRST CHILD! So he makes her chew milkflowers to make sure the baby is as 'perfect as a child could be'.
Well, you probably know what happens next. Nessa was born disabled and while Melena survived the birth, she was never really the same. All of Governer Thropp's attention turned to his 'tragically beautiful firstborn daughter'. He spent so much time with Nessa, in fact, his wife started to get quite lonely. She's also tragically beautiful, she wants love too! She was so desperate for love, in fact, she was willing to be intimate with a strange man with bottles of green elixir...
"...but you know what happens when you drink while pregnant. And Mother's body was already weak from my birth. That's why Elphaba is green, why she's treated the way that she is by Father, why Mother never woke up after the birth. And why I keep an empty elixir bottle with milkflowers in it." Nessa tilted her head back, hands letting go of the vice grip she didn't notice she had on her wheels.
"I don't think Elphaba knows that I know this, but...she also has an empty bottle. She keeps it under the pillow. And Father thinks I don't know about the other man, but him standing in the doorway with Mother is one of my earliest memories."
She sighed. "Sorry. Didn't mean to dump all that on you, but once I started, it was hard to stop."

wicked thoughts
damn i wonder what the good witch of the North was up to during all this glinda elphaba nessarose drama.
i love the wizard of oz so much man. its such a good fun whimsical universe and the extended lore is so fun. ive been obsessed with these books since i was a little kid
the design of everything in this film was incredible. it was so incredible and whimsical and looked perfect and brought a great stage musical even more to life
the ribbon fish were so cute!!
the part in defying gravity where she is flying around and the camera frames it so her long cape takes up the entire bottom half of the screen and i think it was a reference to how the effect is done in the musical
i think boq is more likeable in this - but that is moreso cause im an unironic ethan slater fan and have been since before everyone knew him from dating ariana. hes got some good music
i thought they were going to change some nessarose stuff - esp the part with the milkflowers, cause her plot is the weakest in the show and could be improved.. maybe in part 2?
in the wizard and i elphaba runs like a mile away from shiz and gets to the impassable desert so interesting that shiz is on the edge of oz
everytime seeing the impassable desert was so exciting i love it they do so many silly things with it in the books, like the dwarfs that tunnel under it to invade
did i mention the SET DESIGN. oh my god please let them win every award for it it was beyond incredible. shiz was sooo magical and whimsical. dancing through life in the library was done incredibly well!!!
loved fiyero. i just like Jonathan bailey but he brought so much to such a mid character
every time we saw into a random town ie. at the begining the extras werent all colour coded?? sorry are these the munchkins or the quadlings or the winkies or the gillikins?? they WOULD be colour coded that is essential
i hope this makes a hundred trillion at the box office so they greenlight a wizard of oz remake (desperately needed cause the 1939 one isnt that good) and also start making films of the sequel books
i should read all the wizard of oz books again
i didnt know kristin and idina were going to be in this it was cool af to see them. i dont remember that whole lil stage show being present in the musical. i love the idea of the ancient magical ones though its a really good backstory
the moment when elphaba makes the stone carving of the wizard fall down and it reveals an animal behind it ooo
theres a lot i cant remember that probably will be explained in part 2 but i wonder how the animal plot is resolved - in the books there are many talking animals and the wizard is happy and glinda teaches him magic and fine with it, so we'll see..
sentimental man is so underrated and will always be
the monkeys are still so terrifying
i love the model of oz they built its so cute - but the hmmm what colour should this brick road me was such a prequel trope it was prob my least favourite part
its so interesting that wizard of oz and this film have the same plot twist - that the wizard cant actually do magic, so you go into this film knowing that but its still an effective twist and is obviously played so differently in this film
im so excited for part 2 why do i have to wait a wholeee year... this must be how people felt after back to the future part 2 waiting for part 3
thank you so much if you made it to here i love you!!!! ❤️😍❤️😍💖❣️💕💘

I think what also really bugs me is articles from professional journalist that just don't seem to have done the most basic modicum of research.
WaPo published an article that says Glinda is "pronounced" Ga-linda without seeming to understand that she changes the entirety of her name, not just the pronunciation, to Glinda.
The same article says Elphaba is ostracized by her father "for being the product of her mother's affair"--which I think is a completely unfounded reach. He hates her because she's green. He has no idea, so far as the show or movie indicates, about the affair. If he knew Elphie was from an affair, I think he's blame the greenness on that and the milkflowers wouldn't be a thing.
A different article calls the party at the OzDust "Oz's version of prom."
Like. What the fuck?
#the wapo article also says galinda's change of heart and galinda and elphaba becoming friends never makes sense#if you can't read the nuances of characterization and understand feeling and nuance without it being spoonfed#maybe you shouldn't review media as your job#it basically is spoonfed anyway!#galinda realizes not only that elphie did something nice for her despite the torment#but also that the way bullying elphie makes her feel is Bad and she doesn't want to do it anymore#that's not like. subtext. that's the text.#and the second article was written by someone with a significant background with wicked#why the fuck would you call that oz prom???????#post#wicked#wicked movie
