I own and operate a paramilitary company in the Boston area that competes with the Minutemen.
We offer security staffing, training, settlement administration, construction projects, and kill contracts, as well as good-old mercenary work. We're not just a company, we're a nation, one without borders whose primary exports are force and expertise.
We strike a balance between the Gunners and Minutemen, being a mercenary company through and through while still using our strength and knowledge to improve the lives of those we help, rather than just rob them. Hell, if you can give people a better life and a job they'll turn out their pockets for you.
As owner-operator, my days mostly consist of running specialty supplies like ammo and uniforms between settlements, processing new recruits, and forging connections with new settlements.
When there's an outside threat to one of our installations, like Mutants or rival raiders, I accompany a team of my best fighters into the wasteland to hunt down and kill whatever it is that's threatening our home.
In my free time I still like to scavenge solo. There's always more salvage to find and it reminds me of when I was just starting out, without people relying on me.
If I'm forced to have downtime - like with a bad injury, radiation poisoning, or a tip on an incipient settlement attack - I spend it gunsmithing or running my side business. I do custom orders for Commonwealth weaponry in Diamond City, mostly for fun.
The side business deals in importing prewar-style small arms in bulk. Funny story how it came about actually.
When I went to New Vegas last year, an old NCR contractor showed me where he got his guns, a wonderful place just outside town called Gun Runners that reproduced classic military firearms to a high degree of quality using prewar schematics. The surviving guns in the Commonwealth are some of the ugliest ducklings I've ever laid eyes on, so surrounded by all this hardware I felt like Charlie in the chocolate factory. I loaded up on as much firepower as I could carry home, before it hit me: why make this a one time thing? Why not get a steady flow of guns of this quality delivered straight to my doorstep? Why not, on top of it all, get paid for the pleasure?
So I sweet-talked the supply manager there, this mean twink named Isaac. Batted my eyelashes at him, told him about the Militia back home. I said I had a thousand men ready to move heaven and earth to get these guns back to the east coast. I may have massaged that number a tad, but I needed this contract, and more than that, I needed those guns!
Once I convinced him I was the person for the job, we settled on a (truly astronomical) figure, and it dawned on me I now had a contract with the most powerful arms dealer in the west, and absolutely no way to make good on it. I'm not squeamish but the thought of what the Vegas mob might do to me for stealing tens of thousands of caps in guns did make me a little nauseous. So I devised a plan to not get my legs shattered with a crowbar.
The entire trip home, I spent every cap of my up-front payment paying off raider gangs along I-40. Once the caps ran out I started trading guns. I told them I wasn't paying them just for safe passage, but to work for me. Every other month a shipment of guns would come through, and they would transport it from the west side of their territory to the east, where they would hand it off to the next band of raiders. Rather than pay caravan guards willing to brave thousands of miles on one of the most dangerous highways in the south, I turned the raiders into my caravan, cutting that cost and using the difference to stay one step ahead of my creditors in Vegas.
When the relay race got to Massachusetts, it would be picked up by my men in the Glowing Sea, which would act as a natural deterrent to all but the bravest and best-equipped raiders. From there it's brought to Bunker Hill and distributed through the caravan network in Boston, where it reaches my vendors, where it reaches me. And because of what I have to pay those twenty or so gangs along I-40, I don't make a single damn cap off of the whole operation. So now I get these fancy foreign guns right at home, but I have to pay exorbitant market rates, AND I have no control over the supply, meaning it winds up in the hands of my enemies.
But it's all worth it to not have to look at that so-called "Assault Rifle" ever again.
More fallout 4 oc lore questions for people (other fallout oc answers also welcome): what does your oc do in the wasteland now? Do they have a job? What do they spend their free time doing?

Some Militiamen relaxing near the generator room. A fireteam (three riflemen and a machine gunner) got reassigned here from our recruitment center to lighten the load on the security force there following Peyton's death.
Watchful eyes might spot a member of Rat Patrol in picture #2, but did you know there's another hiding in plain sight? You can tell by his Oakley Delta Pilot gloves.

A newly processed batch of Militiamen do a final gear check before leaving on a long range patrol to establish a presence in a new installation. Little Eddie Nordhagen photobombs in the back.
Militiamen are significantly more expensive to field than Minutemen, with even a small unit like this costing around 4,000 caps to equip. Each militiamen is issued a rifle, ammunition, their uniform, rations, water and first aid items before being deployed, with vice and vanity items (hand mirrors, hairbrushes, cigarettes, beer, drugs) available as bonuses. As such, each rifleman costs about a thousand caps to outfit, before role-specific gear.

17 November 2289 / Nordhagen Beach
A militiaman killed in action near the perimeter. This is the first Militia casualty since the Halloween attack.
This rifleman, Peyton, joined up with us outside the robotics disposal ground by USAF Olivia. We found him and his partner Kelly scavenging for robot parts there and following a brief standoff we were able to offer them a better life than mucking in the mud looking for circuitboards.
Kelly and Peyton accompanied us for a fire mission at the air force base so I could test their mettle. After proving themselves against the raiders I brought them back to Nordhagen for processing and they both joined the Militia as riflemen, blending in with the regulars there.
In planning for Operation TI:BUMRUSH, it was determined a larger force than just Rat Patrol would be needed for operational success. With our numbers low and options limited, we poached some of the security staff from Nordhagen to take with us on the assault, taking Kelly, Watson and Caden with us and leaving Peyton and Hardi in charge.
During the operation, a small band of raiders took advantage of the reduced patrols at home and launched a surprise attack. Peyton coordinated the defense but was killed when he tried to lead a counterattack out beyond the wire. Kelly has since been honorably relieved from mission duty in perpetuity.
Below: only known photograph taken of Peyton while he was alive, showing him in basic weapons familiarization course. Kelly is just barely visible behind him as they were in the same class.

17 November 2289 / Boston Harbor
Minutemen volunteers led by Preston Garvey gather in a diner near Fort Independence to discuss plans for retaking the Castle. I was impressed with their ability to pull it together for this mission; I didn't figure there were three whole Minutemen *left* in the Commonwealth! We discussed tactics and decided on not complicating things and just bumrushing those damn lobsters.

Still, I didn't trust them to do it right, so I brought my own employees. Minutemen, meet the Commonwealth Militia.

2 Nov. 2289 / Boston Subway
Surviving Militiamen from the Diamond City office take shelter in the subway tunnels under the city.
Troopers sent into the metro typically don plainclothes in favor of their uniform, opting to disguise as just another of the many bands of raiders that operate there. This helps to minimize the chances of urban-based gangsters or mutants identifying us as part of a larger group and following us outside the city to a safe zone.
This unit likely comprises the last surviving Militiamen in the entire Commonwealth.

July's employee of the month is Zoe!
Zoe is a trooper assigned to Egret Tours Marina. She was part of the second team sent to secure the base and has shown exceptional bravery and leadership since being posted here. Egret Tours is her first post but she's already stood out, even among the huge force massed there. She's handy with the heat, too - see her use her M249 SAW under the #combat footage tag. All that plus her proven experience securing hostile settlements means a promotion is in the works for her.
Congratulations to Zoe for being July's employee of the month!

Sweep-and-clear operation in a prewar military fort near an installation on the coast. Hammer took a pretty bad hit there but Alex got him back on his feet while I covered them; I think I'll send him to medic school next time he's off duty.

These are actually all disguised members of Rat Patrol! Left to right we have Watson in his signature ski mask wielding a B&T APC9; Kelly, our newest member out on her first real mission for the Militia; and Caden equipped with an early-serial H&K MP5 with dedicated handguard.
