1, 4, 21, 25!
1. How many books did you read this year?
127 (according to StoryGraph), but I'm 70% through The Second Sex and will probably finish a handful more before January.
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
I really loved Seth Dickinson's Baru Cormorant trilogy and am planning on checking out his other works. I also started reading Naomi Novik and am actively resisting her Napoléonic Wars But With Dragons series (Spinning Silver, her latest release, was really tight, but Uprooted was ... less purposeful? And I don't wanna commit to a ten-book series).
Otherwise, I actually did a lot more branching out to explore authors I've already read books by to confirm if it was a fluke or if I consistently like their work — Colson Whitehead (anything that isn't autobiographical is masterfully written), Donna Tartt (this woman has a chokehold on my SOUL), R.F. Kuang (great ideas though sometimes a bit ambitious for her abilities — but she's growing more powerful). I've read stories from Nghi Vo's Singing Hills series and have enjoyed all of them, but I haven't checked out their other works, so it feels disingenuous to say I love them as an author for now, but I'm certainly open to reading their other works based on this. Oh, and I finally read my first Discworld book, so you could say it's all over for me.
21. Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama?
lol, not even familiar with those communities.
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
My book club friends this year had soft, no-pressure goals of 100 books for the year, so I set that as a passive benchmark for myself. I guess ... reduce the number of books in my to-read pile on StoryGraph? I seem to keep adding more every time I read another book. ^^;

If it makes any difference you can still edit html and markdown via firefox mobile. I know it's not really what you want but yk. It's something.
Thanks for the tip! Yeah, at least it is better than nothing.

My parents like to remind me that when I was very small I wanted to be a painter, singer and dancer, all at the same time mind you, because I said it in a funny/incorrect way (pintora, cantora e dançora). Also, veterinarian was my to go choice for a long time in elementary school.

'little red riding hood but make it gay' you can say that my interest had been piquéd 👀
We'll see if I ever find time to write this thing given how many ideas I'm chasing down but the vibe is LIVING in my head and pulls heavily on my summer spent living in a tiny village in rural France, and the mountan/ravine landscape I spent probably an inadvisable amount of time exploring as a random non-local woman with a not-entirely-fluent grasp on the language travelling entirely solo because I didn't know anyone except for the staff at the bakery where I was staging. There were a lot of ancient shepherd's paths with perilous drops, and times I found myself caught out in low places by the dark when the sun dipped behind hills earlier than I expected, or I ended up further afield than planned because a path called my name.

well les mis and multiples of 5 for the ask thingy
Tumblr media
5. Out of all your fanworks that include Cosette, which is your favourite?
Even though it's one of the first things I wrote and I've grown out of a lot of the characterizations and am a much stronger writer now than I was, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for my Web Series AU.
10. What's your favourite piece of fanart for Cosette?
Another fave is this piece by @everyonewasabird !
15. Have you noticed your style change over time?
Oh, DEFINITELY.  As I alluded to in a previous ask, I entered the LM fandom from the fanon end, and it was the only way I'd ever experienced the sort of "genre" that is fanfic, so I started a lot more with fics that explored that style and those tropes, rather than the themes and characters from the story itself.  Once I started doing more outside research and forming my own opinions and understanding of the characters and the events of the book and their themes and meaning, I think you can see my work diverging away from classic fanfic tropes and toward an even split of "explorations of the themes/messages on my own terms" and " ha ha wouldn't it be funny if."
20. When did you first join Tumblr? How long was it between that and finding the Les Mis fandom?
(answered this here)
25. What's your least favourite thing Cosette said or did?
... Marius?  Really??

There's a lot of speculation and claims in @bliss-bliss-bliss-bliss' reply that lack full context. Why would Camilla Parker-Bowles, who literally married King Charles III, and is an aristocratic descendant of royalty herself, have "more good reasons to hate him than any other single human being alive"? She is not less complicit than Charles is in defending and preserving the British monarchy; if anything, she is more complicit, because she chose to marry Charles, the future king.
If art is inherently subjective, then that would also mean that the "authorial intent" argument made here would be useless, because the interpretation of a work of art is inherently dependent on the individual viewer, and not the original intent of the artist. As there are an infinite number of individual viewers of a piece or work of art, that also means that the art can be interpreted in any number of ways; and, due to the inherent subjectivity of art, those interpretations may be widely varied, but not necessarily "inferior" to authorial intent.
For example, a singer might say, "well, I intended to convey the message of [insert X thing here] in [insert Y song here]", but once the song becomes popular, listeners may interpret the song and lyrics in any number of ways, or even re-interpret it, deconstruct it, etc...my point is, whatever the author may or may not have intended (and that is a very big "if", as this entire interpretation of what the artist may or may not have intended with the piece comes across as a conspiracy theory, proclaimed to be "fact"), those who adhere to the "Death of the Author" (or Artist, in this case) school of thought entirely disregard "authorial intent" to focus on the the individual art piece itself.
In that sense, I think that @milfbro has a very solid interpretation.
I will be honest guys, the Red portrait of king Charles is gorgeous asdfghjkl
it's a bad portrait. Like. Objectively. It does the opposite of what's intended. It looks like the painter is insulting him. If it was in a contemporary gallery with no context you would see it immediately as the ambivalent criticism of Charles's reign, how he fades into the overwhelming red background as a tiny little figure, small and insignificant, insufficient for the clothes he's wearing. It reminds my of Goya's portraits, how they were so 'realistic' that they ended up making these great figures look pathetic to the viewer. So these are our rulers?
the sheer novelty. the surprise and shock, the kinda cunt it's serving for no reason. I. I love it. It's an incredible portrait by Jonathan Yeo. By the sheer fact that Charles, the man, is impossible to portray as greater than man because he's just such a nothingburger of a dude. So a portrait made to make him look huge and interesting made him be swallowed in red brushstrokes. The butterfly, that reminded me immediately of " we will all laugh at guilded butterflies", draws more attention than him. It looks like an omen. It looks like a warning in all this red. Something is not right here.
This is the best royal portrait ever 10/10
