One of my favorite aspects of Sinners how they use the musical scenes to build tension. Because they start out small, with just Sammy and Stack in the car, then the performance with Slim at the train station, and then working up to the scenes in the barn.
The first juke sequence is the most visually stunning, of course. It's chaotic but overwhelmingly positive, beautiful, and joyous. When we move to Pearline's song, things start to darken. The thumping stomps are timed with the twins beating the man with the loaded dice. We've already seen violence in the film, but this is a steep escalation intentionally set to music.
Then, we think the tension is going down when the ******** show up (no spoilers 🤫), but they are so immediately unsettling that we never feel at ease. Their music is sweet and their voices are soothing, but it's a front, one that fractures pretty quick but shatters completely with the Rocky Road to Dublin.
Rocky Road is a perversion of the first juke scene, twisting the joyful chaotic energy of the dance into a masterfully disturbing parody, where the full evil and madness (and twisting of spirituality) of the ******** is put on display.
It's just such a good way to build the narrative. I love love love how serious they were about making music the keystone of every filming decision.

Go see Sinners.
But DO NOT leave the theater once the credits start rolling. Trust me. It's not a post-credits scene, it's the true ending to the movie.

I need to see more posts about Sinners (2025) in general, but specifically praising the screen presence of Jayme Lawson exuding an almost supernatural charisma and power in that scene (well, a lot of her scenes) where she is acting, dancing, and singing her ass off like a mythical siren. A force to be reckoned with and pretty much every actor in this movie was perfection.
And don't get me started on Miles Caton. First movie this man is in and he fucking nailed it and I will not hear otherwise.

Sinners (2025)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Sinners has one sequence with some harsh lightning, which is preceded by a shot of distant lightning a few minutes before it happens. The following sequence has some rapid gunfire with bright muzzle flashes, but this sequence takes place during the daytime, mildly mitigating the strobe's harshness. Both of these sequences happen very late in the film, at least an hour and 40 minutes in, and the rest of the film is free of any strobe effects.
All of the camera work is either stationary or very smooth.
Flashing Lights: 4/10. Motion Sickness: 1/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: There is a lot of graphic violence in this film, with a lot of blood and gore. A backstory about domestic abuse is told. Early in the film, a CG snake is killed graphically and painfully.
BRANDON'S REVIEW: A dark and lustful story about twin brothers returning home to the Depression-era South after working for years with Al Capone, this film showcases a lot that we already knew, from Michael B. Jordan's acting talent (in dual roles this time), Ryan Coogler's talented directing; but it also gives us some surprises, including how powerful the music can be when Ludwig Göransson is given more creative control than just writing the score. The real standout in this film is Miles Caton in his acting debut, where one cannot tell that this is his first film, as he brings a level of confidence onto the screen equal to both iterations of Michael B. Jordan with whom he interacts, not to mention the raw musical talent he demonstrates with equal qualification. The invasion by other film genres throughout the film may be a little off-putting for some, but overall, this film works, especially with its celebration of blues music. Grade: B+.
NOTE FROM BRANDON: As many of you have probably noticed, I haven't been very active for the last few weeks. I left my regular job in February for an opportunity at a start-up company, one that has since failed. I haven't had a lot of time to evaluate new films. This came right at the same time as a big life change for which I am not currently sharing details, but will share at a later date. I am starting a new job on Monday, and if it is more reliable than the start-up that previously employed me, I should be resuming regular video reviews and content by the end of April, just in time for the summer movie season. Thank you all for your patience, and an extra-special thanks to Momgana on our Discord server, who has also been doing some evaluations of her own.

Miles Caton making his acting debut in Sinners is really awesome and I hope we get to see him in more films.
And maybe I'm thinking too hard about this, but casting a newcomer as Sammie was a pretty genius choice. Because you can see Miles' performance develop over the course of the film (even though, it being a film, they most likely filmed it all out of order) showing Sammie being brought into an environment he hasn't been in before, surrounded and supported by his peers who have a lot more experience than him, and then seeing him come into his own. Miles working on this film went through a similar "arc". Well, minus the vampires and the trauma.
I hope this makes sense.
