Mike's biggest insecurity is that he feels unneeded, so imagine how over the moon he's going to be when he finds out that the love of his life who he wants to love and protect does need him and wants to be loved and protected by him 🥺🥺

he never disliked her. he just disliked the fact his friends were showing interest in girls and he couldn't understand it, annoying him. but ofc he won't say that. the writers will only show it.

so, because he struggles with understanding himself and his own feelings, it results in frustration. he lashes out and has emotional outbursts. he chooses to push her away without any real explanation. like.. when you look back... we never get an actual reason why he was upset by her presence. we're just left to assume it has do with el, but does it really??

the entirety of s2, mike does NOT understand his friends' attraction to girls and their desire to dance with a girl, hence why he looks so "offended" and "confused" when they leave to go dance with a girl at the snowball. he doesn't get what's so attractive about max. he doesn't get lucas' crush on princess daphne. he's confused at the snowball. he doesn't even look for el. he just sits there contemplating. bro is GAY as fuck in s2. it may be his second gayest season and that's not even including his dynamic with will.

i think it's safe to say his dislike for max has more to do with his own confusion with himself, and nothing to do with el. it makes sense also because he is known to project onto others rather than say how he really feels. it adds up.

i don't want mike wheeler to have a big revelation about his crush on will in season 5. i think he's completely aware of it by now and trying to accept himself after what will said to him in the van. my perfect scenario would be the whole party + the babysitter's club to slowly piece together mike's crush on will because he's becoming more and more obvious about it. that ending in el confronting mike and breaking up with him before agreeing they are better off as friends. clearly will doesn't realize this because he's completely sure his best friend is Straight and In Love with his sister.
