Movie Fact
Did you know . . .
That Dr. Seuss widow hated the Mike Myers Cat in the Hat movie so much, that she said she would not allow another live action movie to be made of her husband’s work.

(More) Things I Noticed in UKsies: Fansie Night Edition! (Act 1)
I was lucky enough to see newsies again at the fansie night last night and it was incredible!! Here are more little moments that I loved :) This is gonna be long.
The absolute roar from the audience as soon as the lights went down to start the show, fansies are something else, man, this audience was on fire
At the very beginning Race looks so happy reading the paper I can't his smile was so big - Josh Barnett has said that this is his favourite part of the show and it shows!!
Lady behind me tried to buy a paper from one of the newsies but he wouldn't give it to her because she didn't have cents
Matthew Duckett (Crutchie) can do the fingers-in-the-mouth loud whistle thing and uses it a lot during the show, first to call the newsies to work
Not me wondering the entire time how Race's cigar and Morris' cigarette work only to be reminded that e-cigarettes exist
My mum's face after Splasher did a backflip whilst skipping - Ross Dorrington, my God
'Hey! Hey! *spin* Get ya papes!'
The way the newsies just slide around the stage and careen off of it, its an accident waiting to happen but it looks so fun
Santa Fe Prologue, Jack yanks Crutchie away from that railing so fast poor guy he just wants to go down
Crutchie flinches away from Jack and laughs when he suddenly leaps towards him at 'close your eyes'
For like half of carrying the banner these boys are just half naked, you can see their mic packs running up their backs
Crutchie pickpockets Darcy
At some point Crutchie does something to offend Finch and gets whacked with his slingshot
Guy in front of woodside looks so sad the whole of the 'curdled coffee' bit and is contemplating life only to stand up and sing 'all I can catch is fleas'
He then proceeds to flick said fleas at another newsie who runs away and calls him disgusting
Wiesel descends from the ceiling
Alex James Hatton Davey!!
Alex's Davey is more mature than Ryan's, he seems more sure that he's here to do a job and isn't confused or intimidated by the newsies, he genuinely seems like an outsider who isn't in on the joke and is not impressed by their antics
'that's disgusting'
Henry gets on his knees and pretends to be a child in the line to get papes and keeps going 'I'm new too'
Right behind them a distraught Mike carries a limp Jojo who opens his eyes and says 'I'm dead' to Wiesel
Hannah and Bunsen squabble over a notebook in Bottom Line and Nunsio looks ready to commit
(Lindsay Atherton Hannah is amazing she is hilarious)
Alex Davey is very unsure selling papers to the audience he just kinda mumbles and seems a bit hopeless at it while Les just swindles everyone
The relationship between Alex!Davey and Les is very different to Ryan!Davey, Ryan is all over Les and is very affectionate whereas Alex seems to show the other half of large age gap sibling relationships, meaning he clearly cares about Les but also occasionally looks at him like he is the bane of his existence. Relatable.
Spot's actress is also a bowery beauty it's amazing, the bowery beauties also dance behind Medda during her performance and wink at the audience.
Newsie controlling the light for Medda's performance is concentrating Very Hard
Bobbie Chambers Katherine!!!
Bobbie!Katherine is very sarcastic and very uninterested in Jack but when he gives her the drawing makes a 'huh thats pretty good' face
The newsies watching Medda's show pick up the lights at the end of Don't Come A-Knocking and dance in a circle around them, mirroring their dance moves
Josh Denyer (Mush) has his moment to shine in the bit just after don't come a knocking and has a little solo which was heavily applauded, rightly so
When Race 'tells Wiesel (him)self' he literally goes up, closes the money box and just says 'no'
Katherine watches World Will Know from above the Bronx
When Jack writes on the chalk board he shoves Oscar out of the way very harshly several times and he ends up sprawled over some stairs unable to get up
There's a slide
Crutchie joins in with some of the dancing but his face screams 'help me idk how to do this' I love Matthew Duckett
Jack, Les, Davey and Crutchie confer before marching up through a corridor of newsies to the doors of the World. Crutchie stands facing away from the doors when they go in like he's standing guard, when they get thrown out, he falls to the side directly into the arms of another newsie trust fall style.
Despite already being given a borough to go to, Tommy Boy dives face-down under a table to avoid going to Brooklyn, Mush and another newsie (didn't see who 😅) put their bags on their heads
Bobbie!Katherine is a lot more sure of her self which makes it more meaningful when she shows the vulnerability of 'I'm just busting out of the social pages'
Les follows Crutchie at the end of the World Will Know mini-reprise and Crutchie looks sad when Davey calls him to go home, he then calls to Jack who is staying behind to talk to Katherine and says 'for fuck's sake' when he doesn't follow. This was confirmed by the girls in front row Brooklyn who he said it to because they couldn't stop giggling
Crutchie breaks the forth wall a lot
Katherine's hesitation on giving her last name is more played as she doesn't expect to have to provide one
Katherine physically puts distance between herself and Jack when he starts flirting
Watch What Happens is amazing!! Bobbie puts more frustration into it and speaks a lot of the lines, often punctuated by 'ugh'. Fun fact: Watch What Happens was Bobbie's drama school audition song and she has been working on it for actual years, it definitely shows, it was a brilliant delivery.
Davey really shows hesitation before Seize the Day and his voice goes wobbly in all the right places when he calls for Jack to help him out
'Maybe Pulitzer will see it out of his window and feel sorry for us' 'Heh?? *offended Crutchie noises*'
Crutchie is physically restrained from beating up on the scabbers
One of the scabbers is slipped extra money by Wiesel
Seize the Day was incredible as always, all other productions pale in comparison it is seriously next level, mid-song applause and a standing ovation afterwards (which really, really doesn't happen mid-show on the west end)
Splasher's box jumps!! I counted twelve last night. TWELVE.
Military snare in 'behold the brave battalion'
Crutchie stands offstage with Les to watch the Seize the Day dance break and whistles So Loud to cheer them on
And Mush's pirouettes!!!
Crutchie's agonised coughs when he's being arrested jfc Matt is good at that
The fight call for this show is insane, there is so much going on and its all so expertly done, something went a little wrong and Les' rope ascension didn't happen but so much goes on it wasn't missed
Crutchie whistles to signal the arrival of the police
Newspapers fall from the ceiling at the beginning of Santa Fe
Santa Fe was so good, Michael has such a pretty voice even while literally crying and he uses his little postcard a lot throughout, physically leaning over the railing of the tower like he's reaching for the idea of Santa Fe.
Aaaand end of act 1! This is so long so I'll do a part 2 🤣

Staff Pick of the Week
When I first saw these magazines, I knew they were post-worthy because of their highly-stylized design and lovely covers. Upon further investigation, I discovered that they are issues of the short-lived and well-remembered Flair magazine, helmed by Fleur Cowles (pronounced “coals”).
Fleur Cowles (1908-2009) was born Florence Friedman on January 20, 1908 in New York. She later changed her first name to Fleur and her last name to Fenton. She worked as a writer and advertising executive in her earlier years, founding the Pettingell & Fenton, Inc. agency with her second husband, Atherton Pettingell, Jr. After she divorced Pettingell, she married Gardner “Mike” Cowles, changing her name to Fleur Cowles—a name which she kept professionally, despite remarrying once more. It was Mike Cowles, editor and co-founder of Look magazine and co-owner of the Cowles Media Company, who bankrolled the publication of Fleur’s vision for Flair.
Flair ran from February of 1950 to January of 1951, and lost an estimated 2.5 million dollars (the equivalent of 24.7 million dollars in today’s money). The reason it was highly unprofitable (despite being sold at a price point set higher than other magazines) was Fleur’s dedication to producing a singular vision, what a Vanity Fair feature called “the most outrageously beautiful, visually daring, and extravagantly inventive magazine ever conceived.” The magazine was expensive to make, with different textured stock, die-cut punch-outs, and issues like the May 1950 Rose issue, which was opulently scented. It’s truly a work of art, and the issues also include many famous names, like W. H. Auden, Simone de Beauvoir, Winston Churchill, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí, and Tennessee Williams. I wish I could show more of the interiors, but the magazines’ bindings are quite fragile and could not be scanned aside from the covers.
Although Flair was relatively short-lived, it was Fleur’s favorite project. She even said, “People ask me, If you could read your obit, what would it say? My answer is that I would like it to be about Flair.” Fleur was an interesting person, to say the least, and her story is well worth looking into, as there is much, much more to her than I am able to mention here (for one thing, there are roses named after both Fleur and Flair.) I recommend starting with the Vanity Fair piece, but you could also read her own anecdotal memoir, She Made Friends and Kept Them.
Above is a portrait of Fleur Cowles by René Gruau, who was a major contributor to Flair.

Weekend Top Ten #674
Top Ten Movie Insults
You fight like a dairy farmer!
Sadly that’s not from a film, otherwise – of course – it would be number one. But cinema has long had a fascination with invective; words as weapons, wielded to wound. Basically, people insulting each other is pretty funny, and it’s been used a lot in all sorts of fiction.
Despite the world being, well, the world (gestures at everything), it wasn’t current affairs that prompted this particular listicle. It’s actually been gestating for a few months, after I rewatched a particular film and was reminded of how much I loved this one particular insult. Yes, it’s on the list, and it features quite highly. You’ll see for yourself before too long. Anyway, that got me thinking about my favourite cinematic insults. Because some of them are belters.
Some of them, also, are very rude. I’ve tried to avoid incessant swearing. But sometimes it can’t be avoided. As a result, this is probably the filthiest list I’ve ever done. It shall be hidden under the fold, as it were; placed in a metaphorical brown paper bag like a naughty magazine or a copy of the Daily Star. Those of a nervous disposition are directed to one of my other Top Tens, like this delightful one about the Muppets that’s still probably the closest this stupid blog has ever come to going viral.
And that’s about it, really. There follows a list of some people being mean to each other and calling each other naughty names. There are probably some big ones missing – I never got round to watching Blade: Trinity, because everyone said it was shit, so Ryan Reynolds’ famous line does not make this list on technical grounds. But there are definitely some classics here, from the sublime to the ridiculous to, well, ones that just blow the bloody doors off. There is, I think you’ll find, an insult for every occasion; all of them from the movies.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.
No disrespect, but you’re a cunt. (Brendan Gleeson, In Bruges, 2008): straight in with the filth. But it’s not the no-no words that make this funny; it’s the repetition, the sheer weight of cursing that Brendan Gleeson inflicts upon Ralph Fiennes. And more than that it’s the matter-of-fact delivery, which Fiennes takes with quiet, simmering anger. There's a sadness and a banality to it which speaks to the tone of the film as a whole, and it’s a beautiful, sensitive performance from Gleeson.
Yes, it’s true. This man has no dick. (Bill Murray, Ghostbusters, 1984): really a punchline to a wonderful setup from Dan Aykroyd (“dickless here shut off the power.” “Is this true?”) but it’s a terrific punchline; a playground insult delivered at the best (worst?) possible time. Even funnier is that in the melee that follows, when William Atherton lunges at Murray, you hear the latter try to defend himself with “well that’s what I heard!”.
I bet you’re the kind of guy who would fuck a person in the ass and not even have the goddamn common courtesy to give him a reach-around. (R. Lee Emmry, Full Metal Jacket, 1987): to be honest, Emmry’s entire speech to his squad of recruits is fantastic and full of outrageously offensive insults. On the one hand, this is such over-the-top invective as to be utterly hilarious; on the other, it speaks to his characters horrendous and overbearing nature that (spoiler alert) leads to two deaths. This incredible, evocative, imaginative insult is the icing on the whole filthy cake.
You dense, irritating, miniature beast of burden! (Mike Myers, Shrek, 2001): this was, in fact, the insult that inspired me to write this whole list. It's such a benign, slight thing really; it washes off Donkey’s back when Shrek spits it at him. But the structure of it, the layering of adjectives, and the use of “beast of burden”, makes it both funny and memorable. My favourite line in the film.
Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries! (John Cleese, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 1975): a line that was quoted ad nauseum when I was at school and every third boy suddenly discovered Python. The group was successful with humour both highbrow and old school, and this was positively playground; Cleese’s French knight is so supremely childish as to be hilarious. “I fart in your general direction”; legitimately classic.
It was nothing like that, penis-breath! (Henry Thomas, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, 1982): Spielberg and writer Melissa Mathison really had a handle on the performance and language of the kids in this film, and Elliott’s frustration and anger and not being believed, and being patronised by his big brother, boils over in supremely realistic fashion. It's the sort of thing a kid would say, spat out almost nonsensically, and Dee Wallace’s reaction – spontaneous laughter followed by telling him off – is spot-on.
You stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder! (Carrie Fisher, The Empire Strikes Back, 1980): this is partly the script – the escalating series of increasingly-silly adjectives – but mostly Carrie Fisher’s expert performance; searching for the most cutting and incisive insult possible, trying to maintain composure despite obvious fury. The way she spits “nerf-herder”! what even is a nerf-herder? And, of course, it’s capped by Harrison Ford’s wounded “who’s scruffy-lookin’?”
Look up “idiot” in the dictionary, you know what you’ll find? (Val Kilmer, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, 2005): a film made up almost entirely of fantastic one-liners, hilarious dialogue, and cutting insults; this one is simple but also ingenious. A furious Val Kilmer barks the question at a pathetic Robert Downey Jr, who knows how the joke ends – “a picture of me?” – only for Kilmer to give it an inventive and, well, really bloody funny little twist.
That fake old tough guy! (Joe Pesci, Goodfellas, 1990): this one might be less popular, although the scene is certainly iconic. Pesci’s Tommy DeVito is belittled by Frank Vincent’s Billy Batts, and turns homicidal. Pesci’s performance throughout the film is a livewire one, at turns boisterously comedic and terrifyingly vicious; here, though, clearly rankled, there’s none of the menace or charisma, just a primal rage. Tommy is almost reduced to a childhood tantrum, and as such his insult is pathetic, small, but darkly funny.
This is my bargain, you mewling quim! (Tom Hiddleston, The Avengers, 2012): a line so famous that it very briefly became something of an unofficial catchphrase for Hiddleston. On one level it’s just a biting, sneery insult, reeking of misogyny, spat by a rage-filled Loki at Black Widow; but then there’s the fact that, well, how on Earth did they get the word “quim” by Disney? I can only assume that a lot of people didn’t know what the word meant. It’s fitting, really, to circle back to gynaecology here at the end of the list; a somewhat more palatable version of the insult from In Bruges. And yes, I instantly regret the use of the word palatable in this context.
EDITED TO ADD!!! As a rule I don't edit my lists after publication, so this ranking will stand. But I've only just remembered one of my favourite - and simplest! - movie insults: Withnail to Uncle Monty. You know the one. In fact, I'm shocked and ashamed that I forgot Withnail altogether: "A coward you are, Withnail! An expert on bulls you are not!" is also great. Sorry everyone!
