Here's a fun project that I finally finished up recently! I picked up this old Revere-badged Pearl kit from the late 1960's about a year ago and I decided I wanted to built a full kit entirely comprised of vintage pieces from the 60's and 70's. It's a fun kit to play, and it definitely feels a lot different than a modern setup, and it forces you to approach playing a bit differently. This particular setup features a 24 inch unbranded ride cymbal that was made in Japan, a German-made "Super" crash cymbal (from my research, there seems to be a connection to both Ludwig and Paiste there), and a pair of 15" Paiste Sound Edge hi-hats. The bass drum pedal is a Ludwig Speed King and the throne and hi-hat stand are also vintage Ludwig. I got new lug inserts and tension rods ordered, then installed and cleaned it up. Dang, this thing sounds fat! I installed an Evans HD (non-dry) head on the batter and a new Remo snare head, plus some fat cat wires for vintage snare drums sans modern snare beds. I did some bees wax on the bearing edges and put some foam in the lug springs. The muffler actually works well, too, unlike some out there. Very impressive! This will end up on some records for sure. Got the old drum with a crappy finish and you want to change it on the cheap? Plasty dip primer and then whatever color spray paint over top you want.
