Adorkable: Nibi.

All Part of the Show: Done when Drake sees Lux in the circus and rescues him. It doesn't last once the Mecha Moa shows up.

Amicable Ants: Akari.

And Now You Must Marry Me: What Recluso intends for Nibi after conquering Scavengia. She is understandably Squicked by this.

Applied Phlebotinum: Sugar, aside from being a currency, is the main power source for nearly everything in Scavengia.

Arc Symbol: The Memoria Star is shaped like a starburst; its shape is constantly used on and throughout the film.

Memories and forgotten things are a general theme of the story, as Selena gets amnesia and Drake sets out to find the Star to recover her memories.

Big Bad: Recluso is the primary villain of the movie.

Big Creepy-Crawlies: The inhabitants of Scavengia are anthropomorphic arthropods.

Call to Adventure: The mystery girl's speech about Scavengia at the hospital.

Classic Villain: Recluso, embodying the sins of Greed and Pride themselves. He appears to be wealthy and elegant, but on the inside, he's just a simple creature who likes stealing things.

Dead All Along: The girl at the hospital is revealed to be the spirit of Drake's late great-grandmother.

Deal with the Devil: Recluso tries to tempt Spud into handing over the Memoria Star in exchange for a share of the reward for Nibi's return.

Disney Villain Death: Formosa's ultimate fate when Drake saves Nibi from being killed by her.

Faceship: Recluso's airship has a giant version of his face as the front.

Fictional Currency: Inhabitants of Scavengia use sugar cubes like currency.

Force Feeding: How Drake is poisoned. Don't worry! He gets better!

Foreshadowing: Many aspects of Nibi foreshadow her Reveal. The Princess is one of the only insects with visible pupils and just four limbs, as she’s really a human girl in a honeybee suit that presumably wouldn’t be able to pilot one with more limbs. She’s also quick to befriend Drake once he’s discovered, as she knows he looks like herself under the costume. A conversation she has with Miito has her visibly flustered over her blossoming crush on Drake, despite the cultural barrier in Scavengia forbidding Interspecies Romance.

Similarly, while discussing Drake’s presence in Scavengia, Spud tells Drake a rumor about a human infant who was brought there and raised by the insects. Nibi is later revealed to be the child of the rumors.

God Save Us from the Queen!: Formosa. It's no wonder that her subjects are overjoyed when she dies.

Hive Caste System: It's a world of bug people, so this is to be expected.

Insect Queen: Bubuyog the queen bee and Formosa the termite queen.

Memory Trigger: Activating the Memoria Star is enough to restore Selena's memories in the human world.

Narnia Time: The amount of time that seems to have been spent in Scavengia at the end appears to be a few minutes in the human realm.

Oh, Crap!: Recluso knows he's in trouble when Drake and Nibi are about to slam their aircraft right into Recluso's flying fortress.

Rebellious Princess: Nibi.

The Reveal: Nibi is not an actual insect, but a human girl who has been walking around in a bee suit. As a toddler, she wandered off from her orphanage to be found by Phamarin during the latter's foray to the human world and was raised as one of Queen Bubuyog's daughters.

Save the Princess: From Recluso, in the climax.

Sliding Scale of Living Toys: Any toy who travels to Scavengia will become fully alive and real. 

Super-Sargasso Sea: Scavengia is where lost and forgotten items from our world end up.

Uptown Girl: A common human boy meets a princess his age (who's also human).

Villainous Breakdown: Recluso seems to lose what little sanity he has left when Drake and Nibi attempt to retrieve the Memoria Star. His breakdown ultimately gets him killed.

Virtuous Bees: Most of the beehive of Clan Mellifera are goodhearted bees that want to serve their hive and Scavengia.

Wham Shot: When Nibi's mask is cracked and reveals a human girl's face underneath it.

2022 Retrospective: Best Music Video

Kenshi Yonezu – KICK-BACK

This music video is just so random, that it’s almost perfection. There is so much weirdness going on and it somehow still manages to stay completely coherent. Like, of course, he’s working out. Of course, he gets jealous and wants to impress the cute guy in the gym. Of course, he steps back into the road and accidentally gets pelted by a truck. And of course, is the guy imaginary. The only nitpick I have with this video is that I can’t picture Kenshi Yonezu ever working out like this.

Changmin – Maniac

As a big lover of Hitchcock and Stephen King, I really appreciate the vibes of this video. The transitions are really fantastic, the way it’s filmed is really nice and Changmin is just the cherry on top. His expressions are just top tier, and he also gave me my reaction pic of the year with this video.

ONEW – DICE

This video is just so much fun, it’s like Onew incarnate. There are a lot of throwbacks to other SHINee and Solo music videos of them and I love that. And then there is Lemon Lady. The entire Shawol-dom immediately had a crush on her, and I completely support that. Lemon Lady is cute. I also lowkey ship her and Onew.

Kenshi Yonezu – POP SONG

Another Kenshi Yonezu video and it’s even more random than KICK-BACK. This was for a playstation commercial and though I can see why they choose the song, this music video is a fever dream. It’s the epitome of “I have no idea what I watched, but it was awesome”. Kenshi Yonezu also really rocks the dress, tights, fur jacket and pig tails look, which should be impossible. Yet he makes it look cool. It also makes me wanna steal his gender.

Rolling Stone India named this the best Korean Music Video and honestly, they are not wrong. DPR IAN is an absolutely amazing artist, and his entire artistry is on full display here. The entire video is a display of his bipolar disorder and it’s simultaneously heart-breaking and hypnotising to watch. He manages to tell a story with four songs, that is completely cohesive and builds up to an almost terrifying climax. DPR IAN is also a fantastic actor.

Stray Kids – CASE 143

I’m not the biggest fan of this song and it’s still kinda jarring to me, that they actually sang a love song, but video made me smile so much. The transitions, as usual for them, are perfection, especially the little member jumps in the chorus. Where POP SONG is uncontrolled chaos, this is controlled chaos.

PURPLE KISS – Nerdy

Where memeM didn’t really use its Witch concept film to its full potential (or at all…) this one finally leans into it. But in a cute and funky way instead of a creepy one, which is rare. I also really love their expressions.

Lee Chanhyuk – Panorama

While I’d rather have an AKMU comeback than solos from them both, this is fine. The song is okay. The music video though is art. I think it might be about suicide and therapy, but I’m not sure. What I can say is that this is probably one of the best music videos to come out of YG. Chanhyuk really went all out for this, and I love his bizarre promotions he did so much.

MINHO – CHASE

This mini album was a really pleasant surprise to receive at the end of the year and I was rooting for a music video that shows of his acting and dancing so much. And we did get a music video that shows off his acting. It’s also beautifully shot and well directed. The only problem I have with it, was that I was really worried, that he was going to shoot himself at the end which would have been… weird all things considered. But hearing him talk and explain the music video and scene was really cool.

OK, FIRST OF ALL TASTE!! now that you mention, i would probably disintegrate if ian + bts had a collab... AND the eye ring is actually the coolest thing ever!! ian is so cool... uh, my fave songs are probably so beautiful (I remember watching the mv for the first and being completely enamoured by ian!!), winterfall, calico, mr insanity, no blueberries, and so i danced!!

I TOO WOULD DISINTEGRATE IF IAN & THE TANNIES COLLABED (i’m still holding out for that bibi/rm collab to come to fruition + all the moots were holding out for a dean/rm collab too… One Day…….)

& “SO BEAUTIFUL” IS SOOOOO STUNNING i loved that mv too i watched it right after the miito movie and became even more hooked! SAME W “NO BLUEBERRIES” IT’S SO COLORFUL + THE STORYLINE HAS HORROR VIBES AND I LOVE IT!!!! omg i need to relisten to winterfall + calico + mr insanity i forgot what they sounded like 😭 BUT “SO I DANCED”… TASTE!!!!!!
