lol oh no. We just had a big windy-ass thunderstorm here and my husband was stuck downtown in the convention center for work. I kept sending him messages saying it felt like tornadic winds and how I expected things to come flying through the windows or trees to be downed and it turns out we actually had a tornado WARNING during that time but I never got a notification?! Nothing bad happened but OMG

Just wanted to thank you for taking the time and effort to put together the long climate/environment post, especially the online resources. I've wanted to replace the neglected/dead non-native plants at my place with native plants for months, but didn't know where to start my search for species except to walk around my local nature preserve trying to find something that isn't invasive lol. I'll be able to start (re)introducing native plants this month because of you :-)
Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad the post has been helpful and inspiring. If you'd like more directed guidance on native plants, I can probably point you in the right direction if you can give me a general area to work with (state would suffice!). In general, go for keystone species- those that are common in your area and support many kinds of insects- or pollinator favorites, or host plants for rare/imperiled butterflies/bees/moths.

Excerpt from this press release from the Center for Biological Diversity:
The Center for Biological Diversity and 29 other bird and wildlife conservation organizations from 24 states filed a legal petition today asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to establish a permitting process for commercial buildings to protect birds from deadly window collisions.
Today’s petition proposes a permitting process under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act that would require building owners to use proven measures to reduce collisions, such as films, curtains or others means that make glass visible to birds.
According to recent studies, buildings in the United States kill more than 1 billion birds each year. This problem has contributed to a roughly 30% decline in birds since 1970 — or an estimated 3 billion fewer birds gracing the skies in North America.
“The Fish and Wildlife Service can’t keep letting buildings kill vast numbers of birds every year when there are known solutions to this tragic problem,” said Tara Zuardo, a senior advocate at the Center. “Migrating birds are crashing into walls of glass that leave them broken and dying, and federal officials have a legal duty to push for basic preventative steps. As bird populations dwindle, this threat affects every American in every state, and it needs to be addressed.”
In January 2021 the Service finalized a rule that upended decades of enforcement under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This unlawful reinterpretation failed to prohibit the foreseeable killing of migratory birds. In response to successful litigation by the Center and allies, the Service in 2021 revoked this rule and promised to issue regulations to address infrastructure known to cause bird deaths.
But in December 2023 the agency withdrew much-needed draft migratory bird protection rules, claiming that it requires an indefinite amount of time to pursue the rulemaking and left millions of birds vulnerable to building and window collisions.
Today’s petition notes that the Service admits that building collisions are one of the greatest threats to America’s migratory birds. These collisions are driving declines in warblers, sparrows and many other birds, including a number of sensitive species. That means the conditions leading to these collisions require regulation under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The Service already administers a permitting process to reduce harm to bald and golden eagles, so it could also do so for migratory birds.

French minister vows new immigration rules after student murder
France’s new interior minister said on Wednesday there will be repercussions following the arrest in Switzerland of a Moroccan man suspected of killing a 19-year-old university student and leaving her body in a forest, The Guardian reports.
The alleged attacker was a 22-year-old man of Moroccan nationality. Prosecutors said the suspect had a previous conviction for rape and had been ordered to leave France.
The murder of the student, who authorities have labelled as Philippine, is expected to further heighten political tensions in France, where the new government plans to crack down hard on immigration. Bruno Retailleau, who has vowed to strengthen law and order, tighten immigration laws and make it easier to deport foreigners convicted of crimes, said:
This is an abominable crime. It is up to us, as public leaders, to refuse to accept the inevitable and to develop our legal arsenal, to protect the French. If we have to change the rules, let’s change them.
On Saturday, the student’s body was found in a park in the Bois de Boulogne forest in western Paris, not far from the Université Paris-Dauphine, where Philippine was studying.
A Moroccan national was arrested in the Swiss canton of Geneva on Tuesday and identified as a suspect in the Paris murder, a Swiss justice ministry spokeswoman told AFP. She also added:
The Federal Office of Justice then ordered detention for extradition purposes on the basis of an arrest request from France.
The student was last seen at the university on Friday. Witnesses reported seeing a man with a pickaxe, a police source said.
According to prosecutors, the man was convicted in 2021 for a rape committed in 2019 when he was a minor. He was released in June after serving his sentence and then placed in an administrative detention centre, the source said.
In early September, a judge released him on condition that he report regularly to the authorities. But shortly before the murder of the student, the suspect was put on the wanted list because he had violated the conditions of his release.

Trump promises to deport all illegal immigrants as US president
US authorities intend to deport all illegal migrants within four years, United States President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday.
Trump promised that the mass deportation of illegals will begin on January 20, when the new president officially takes office. The head of state said he would start deportations with convicted illegal immigrants.
Trump added that US citizens whose family members include illegals may have to make a choice. He said:
“I don’t want to be breaking up families. So the only way you don’t break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back.”
He said an exception is planned for “dreamers” – people who entered the US illegally at a young age and have already lived in the country for many years. The US president-elect also said he intends to abolish birthright citizenship.
The right to citizenship by birth is granted by the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. It was adopted after the end of the Civil War on July 9, 1868. According to this amendment, “all persons born or naturalised in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.”
“You know, we’re the only country that has it [birthright citizenship],” Trump said. He deemed it “ridiculous.”
In November, US President-elect Donald Trump said that the head of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum during a telephone conversation promised to help him in the fight against illegal migration.
