I can't believe I'm back on here. A lot has changed. I'm not old, but I'm damn sure not wet behind the ears anymore 😅. I come from the Blackplanet, Migente, Myspace, MSN, and Yahoo chat era. I'm a writer. A poet to be exact who has gone into hiding. A recluse damn near. Some of you may not have been born yet (but that's okay), but to my Superman fans out there. Remember Supermans father, Jor-El, put General Zod, Ursa, and Non into a glass or mirror-like frame called the Phantom Zone Mirror? It is a "primary gateway to place prisoners into the phantom zone dimension." That is the best way I can describe my writers block and where it's gone. Thrown into the phantom zone mirror and thrown to the farthest end of the galaxy. There are many reasons why I put one of my passions on the back-burner. But I learned years ago that you gotta start somewhere. Just start writing/typing. Doesn't have to make sense. Somewhere down the line, it'll make sense. SO HERE I AM. Typing away. But I warn you in advance - my introvert is just a door, all my fire signs dwell behind. I'm a thinker and brutally honest at times. You may add/follow me today and months later, see a post of mine and unfollow tomorrow, and I won't even lose sleep. Not only am I here to get out of my head, but also to provoke thought, to be provoked to think (steel sharpens steel). Hopefully, I will connect with like-minded souls and learn on this new journey. Asé 🤲🏽

Blog Post #10 (Week 12)
1. How have online communities evolved in terms of economic viability, as well as what challenges have emerged from these developments?
Online communities, initially debated for their economic viability, have evolved into major business ventures. As noted by Armstrong & Hagel, these communities, once seen as uncertain investments, have grown into lucrative markets, leading to the creation of products like The Online Community Report, which aids community creators in navigating challenges such as fluctuating venture capital & maintaining user engagement (1997). A key debate in the community sector is how to generate revenue, with some, like Jim Cashel (2000), suggesting the implementation of subscriber fees, while others have even profited by selling online communities for millions (Cashel, 1999). However, this shift toward monetization has led to a dilemma: the balance between profit and genuine community engagement. Janelle Brown (1999) pointed out that the pursuit of financial gain often results in the neglect of community maintenance and development, as seen in the failure of platforms like GeoCities, Xoom, and theglobe.com, which, despite being branded as community hubs, failed to foster meaningful user empowerment or connection.
2. How do ethnic online communities (EOCs) both reinforce & challenge stereotypes?
Ethnic online communities like BlackPlanet.com, MiGente.com, & AsianAvenue.com have provided spaces where users can express their identities in ways that are both reflective of & even resistant to mainstream stereotypes. As described in the text, members of these communities often choose usernames that embody certain cultural or racial stereotypes, such as “FineAssAznGurl” on AsianAvenue.com or *blacklatindiva* on MiGente.com. While these names might seem to perpetuate stereotypical representations, they are also a form of self-expression within a community that is designed to highlight ethnic pride & identity. This dynamic brings to mind Nakamura’s (1999) concept of “identity tourism,” where stereotypes are commodified by outsiders, but in this context, members of these ethnic communities might be reclaiming & reappropriating stereotypes as a form of empowerment. Yet the implications for user empowerment are mixed: on one hand, these communities provide a sense of belonging & the opportunity to challenge dominant narratives. On the other hand, the commercial pressures & the use of stereotypes within these spaces can undermine the deeper purpose of cultural empowerment.
3. What are the benefits and challenges of online communities in empowering marginalized groups, as demonstrated by the activism within AsianAvenue.com, & how do these examples illustrate the potential of online spaces to influence real-world change?
Online communities, like AsianAvenue.com, exhibit cases like the Moy family seeking a bone marrow donor for their daughter & the successful protest against the MSNBC headline during the 1998 Winter Olympics. They illustrate how online spaces can mobilize people for social causes, creating real-world impact. In the Moy family’s case, the community's online organizing helped raise awareness and led to a matching donor in Singapore, even though it was ultimately too late. This story underscores the power of digital solidarity & shows that online communities can serve as platforms for collective action that extend into offline, tangible results.
4. How does the Gamergate movement detail the complexities of online activism, particularly in terms of its stated goals versus its underlying motivations?
The #Gamergate movement provides a case study of how online activism can be driven by contradictory motivations, & how its publicly stated goals often result in more harmful, underlying intentions. On the surface, Gamergate participants framed their movement as a fight for journalistic ethics in video game journalism. They argued that game writers were too close to game developers & that their professional relationships compromised the integrity of the reporting. However, this stance was quickly complicated by the movement's actions & rhetoric. For example, some sought reform in how game journalism was conducted, but the movement's actions suggest the ethics were pushed to the side in favor of personal online attacks. Plenty of the initial energy behind #Gamergate was centered on targeting Zoë Quinn, an indie game developer who became a central figure in the controversy. Chat logs released from various 4chan boards reveal that many early participants focused on harassing her, making comments about her physical appearance, personal life, & even fantasizing about her harm. The rhetoric, which included misogynistic & violent language, highlighted that the movement's primary focus was not on ethical reform but on punishing Quinn, particularly because of her identity as a woman & her status as an underrepresented voice in the gaming industry.

Felix Pantaleon, The Mind Behind NYYNEWS. The First New York Yankees Content Creator Online
In 2005 Felix Pantaleon created NYYNEWS.com at 20 years of age. Felix Pantaleon was already savvy on how to make and operate websites. He credits his learning of html and graphic design to early social media websites that allowed people to express their creativity. Websites like Mp3.com Migente.com and Myspace.com Where Felix would learn and self teach himself to code custom templates. By 2005, Felix was a seasoned vet. Running a successful web design business online.
With his new found skills, with 5 years under his belt creating websites. In 2005, Felix believed that The New York Yankees were losing their way of winning. Growing up watching The Yankees dynasty of the late 90's. Felix who was an already active user on The Yankees MLB forums. Came up with an idea to amplify his opinions. And try to change how New York Yankees News in general were covered by Mainstream Media outlets.
After The Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs in 2005, once again. Felix decided it was time to create a new breed of Yankees content. A platform powered by and for The Fans. Just like that, Felix Pantaleon would be become the first MLB content creator online. Creating NYYNEWS.com (New York Yankees News)
Nothing seen like it before in that era. It was mostly forums or myspace blogs. Shockingly, when Felix was thinking about what he should name his site. His first thought of course was NYYNEWS. He was taken away on how and why the domain name was never registered or taken before. The first time was the charm, Felix quickly purchased the domain.
It was an instant success, the site would get around 5,000 unique visitors per day. This was at a time where search engines would rank domain names first, based on keyword. For example, if someone typed in NYY News. NYYNEWS.com would be the first result shown.
In the following year (2006) Felix recruited Pete Simonetti. Who began as a writer for NYYNEWS. Who later would become the popular content creator The Simonetti Source and launch NYYNEWS cousin brand NYYNEWS-TV in 2022.
Felix Pantaleon is of Dominican-American descent and was Born March 3, 1985 in Manhattan, New York. Today aside from NYYNEWS.com he and The Simonetti Source run multiple successful youtube channels. Whom they still talk about their favorite baseball team, The New York Yankees.
Today, hearing the words "content creator" is common. A genre you can say Felix Pantaleon help create for not only Major League Baseball, but maybe sports online as a whole.

Blog Post #10
What does the TCP report mean?
In our reading for this week titled “Ethnic Online Communities” by Steven McLaine we read about The Children's Partnership (TCP) put out a report back in 2020 by the name of “Low-Income and Underserved Americans: the Digital Divdie’s New Frontier” the report was regarding online content. The findings of this report were that those who “...have low income, live in rural communities, limited education or are members of racial or ethnic minorities..” (McLaine,236) were looking for things like sites to help with lack of literacy and local jobs and low-cost housing as well as the local cultural information. In other words it was obvious that the people in this report were looking for help online through these sites however, these cites sometimes fails them in providing the information needed.
2.Do community websites bring in more profit than help?
In out reading titled “Ethnic Online Communities”  by Steven Mclaine we learn about websites made for minority coumintes. These websites are titled “AsianAvenue.com” “BlackPlanet.com” and “MiGente.com” These three websites were for the Black, Asian and Hispanic communites. In our reading we see that a report Coumminty Connect Inc. reported “very substantial ad revenue” (McLaine,240). Meaning that there was revenue coming in therefore profiting off of helping. However how do we know for sure minorites were helped and the reviews like the one we see on “BlackPlanet.com” accurate.
3. Is the gaming community “toxic” against women?
In a reading this week titled “What is Gamergate, and Why?” written by Jay Hathaway we hear about a women named Zoe Quinn being esstinely exposed of all her information because her ex-boyfriend claimed she cheated on him. Although this is not an ideal situation Quinn was actuat trying to publish a text-based game titied “Depression Quest” and the coumminty was not having it. Why well because she is a woman meaning they were looking for anything to try and find a fault within her. The claim made by her ex-boyfriend was perfect.
4. Is the discussion under #Gamergate ethically?
In our reading for the week  “What is Gamergate, and Why?” written by Jay Hathaway  we see the discouin reagaridn the relationship between women and the gaming community. It is very clear from many examples that the relationship between the two is not a healthy one which is how #Gamergate came to be. In our reading we see a great reason as to how it is not ethical “...there are too many writers who maintain friendships or other close relationships with game developers.” (Hathaway,5). This meaning that game developers have each others back however to what extent and does being a women have a difference and how does it come into play.

WGST WEEK 7: 10/7
1. How do racist comments shape one’s view and identity?
As much as good comments can help to uplift and make one confident, there are also negative and racist comments that can detrimentally affect one’s view and identity of themselves. According to the article it is stated that, “We derive our sense of identity from how we respond to the ways in which others implicitly categorize us through public speech and gestures each day. Although we can experience interpellation positively. But it is explained that we might experience non-interpellation, in which we feel ignored or non-existent. We may experience negative interpellation, where we feel uncomfortably noticed and made visible.” Racist comments and actions can purposely make minorities feel left out, and make them feel as if they do not belong. Someone making a minority generate such feelings can lead to them having negative self-esteem issues, low confidence and them feeling as if they do not have a place in this society. I truly do believe that we as a society need to continuously talk about what minorities go through, their stories, their experiences and to learn more from them because if we do not, we will continue to live in a society that is racist and continue to live in a world where there is constantly white invisibility happening before our eyes. It is important to continue and have these conversations that make people, especially white people, aware of their racist actions and comments to further prevent future generations from spreading these false values and morals to their kids one day.
2. How is white invisibility dangerous to minorities?
“White invisibility does not mean that there are no white people in movies, literature, art and so on, but white invisibility means that white people are reminded less of their skin color because white people have white privilege and this white invisibility has “offered distinct advantages for whites.” White people classify themselves as raceless and the more that they define themselves as such, they deny the advantages that their whiteness brings which is dangerous to minorities because they continue to act like their privilege does not exist and it erases what harm their privilege brings to minorities since white people refuse to act like it does not exist and do not want to take accountability for it. It also makes minorities feel as if they do not have a voice, and continues to disadvantage them because white people will continue to strip and steal opportunities from minorities if they continue to act as if their privilege does not exist and continue to make minorities feel out of place. It is important to implement teachings about white privilege and white invisibility into the education system from an early age, and for it to be taught by teachers of color.
3. How has Social media brought more inclusivity for minorities?
I believe that social media has brought a lot more inclusivity for minorities. According to the article it is stated that, “Social network use by people of color is now higher than that of whites: in 2010, 70 percent of African Americans and English-speaking Latinos reported using social networks (higher than whites at 60 percent), with half of Black users saying they logged into social networking sites at least once a day compared to 30 percent of white users. People of color have gathered in online communities from the internet’s earliest days. They could be found on the mailing lists like the South Asian Women’s Network, on websites like MiGente.com, Asian-Avenue.com, and BlackPlanet.com” Sadly, I know there is still a lot of racism and ignorance spewed out on the internet, but I do believe that social media can be an expressive and inclusive outlet, especially for minorities. In a white dominated world, especially America being white dominated, it is helpful and encouraging to have inclusive and expressive outlets for minorities to have their voices and stories heard. It is also beneficial because they have the ability to network with others of their race and find more people to relate to as well.
4. How has the black community influenced Twitter and made it the app it is today?
“The phrase black twitter refers to a pew study that found 25 percent of online blacks use twitter, as opposed to 9 percent of online whites. It refers to the popular belief that black users dominate Twitter's trending topics feature by generating multiple back and forth responses via hashtags.” I found this part in the article particularly interesting because I definitely believe the black community has played a huge role in making twitter as funny and as informative as it is today. I quite enjoy seeing it being dominated by the black community because I believe it is an expressive outlet for them, they can talk about their experiences as a black man or woman, share their stories and also bring a lot of comedy to it as well. I do think they play a huge part in how Twitter is today and I do believe that Twitter would not be the same if it was not influenced by the black community as much as it is now. I also believe that a lot more people were able to learn more about the experiences that black people go through because of Twitter since there are many black individuals that can give their perspective and stories from their own point of view, and not it being told from a news outlet that is controlled by white media/white people.

How Important is Search Engine Optimization?
Tumblr media
Years ago you were able to build your website and once it was uploaded to your server there wasn’t a great deal required to get it to the front page of the search engines and consequently gain traffic i.e. visitors to your site.
Tumblr media
Hard to rank these days
However, today the number of websites trying to rank their website on page 1 of Google has become more and more competitive, resulting in more work being required to obtain that prized status of number one.
Tumblr media
But having said that, there are a number of things that you can do to give your website a boost in the rankings and that entails getting the best benefits from your search engine optimization (SEO).
On page Seo and off page Seo
There are two different types of search engine optimization known as on page SEO and off page SEO(8 Can't-Miss Off-Page SEO Strategies to Build Your Online Reputation), both requiring different approaches.
On page seo example picture (Blog optimization)
Tumblr media
Off page seo example picture (Linkbuilding)
Tumblr media
We aren’t going to address on page SEO in this article which is basically doing a certain number of tweaks to your website pages to ensure that they meet the criteria for a good website as defined by Google and other search engines( Top 15 Most Popular Search Engines | July 2017 ).
Best search engines 2017 :

The importance of Linkbuilding
Instead let’s take a look at what off page SEO entails, and in particular some of the best ways to build backlinks to your webpage’s.
Check : ( Pdf backlinks – How to create Pdf Backlinks and rank like the pros ) A free and legal way to create some great backlinks wich will rank .
Tumblr media
It has long been recognized that search engines rank sites higher that are perceived to be popular and this popularity is measured by certain algorithms – which are constantly updated and changed by search engines.
I am sure you are familiar with references to the Google Panda and Penguin updates. and the fact that many sites supposedly not meeting the those requirements lost their page ranking and many plummeted down to deep dark depths.
Tumblr media
But not everyone was affected and this substantiates in a lot of cases that they had made the effort to have quality backlinks pointing to their website that gave the appearance of being natural i.e. not hundreds of spammy links created by software.
So what do you do when you have a new site that you want to get ranked?
Once you have got your site uploaded and indexed you can start off by doing blog comments making sure that you only link to your root domain in the first instance. Write about 3 a day until you have built up a base of 40-50 links pointing to your site. This will give a similar appearance to natural link building. It’s not hard to find good quality blogs to write a comment for by just doing a search for your specialised niche or topic.
Check the link below the banner to find blogs in your niche to leave a comment on (free to use) :

It’s worthwhile making the extra effort to write a quality comment that adds some value to the blog rather than something like “nice site” to make sure your comment gets approved.
Tumblr media
Build quality links
Once you have your initial links built you can look at other options for finding quality links, it’s not unusual at this stage to prepare and submit a press report this can result in getting you in front of lots of traffic very quickly and give a boost to your ranking in a short time.
Tumblr media
However on a more long term basis you need to think about building links from other properties like web2.0 sites
skyrocket search engine rankings with web 2.0 blogs
