izuku only sleeps with the lights off.

it isn't uncommon; many people you know can't sleep with even just a sliver of light turned on somewhere in the room. but the difference with izuku, you learn, is not that he's unable to stand the light―it's that he refuses to.

you quickly pick up on it the first few times he sleeps over.

he fidgets in bed, pretty badly, actually. the nightlight you sleep with glows a warm yellow, illuminating the side of your face and coating him in its afterglow. you chalk it up to nerves, how he pulls at his sleeves and adjusts his position constantly; he is, after all, one of the most anxious people you know.

and this relationship―it's new. heck, even you feel a little jittery with his arm wrapped around you.

the rhythmic tapping on your hip only increases pace. you don't think he realizes it, so your hand gently reaches for his, intertwining your fingers as you turn around in his arms.

he's close, nearly touching you nose-to-nose; the proximity leaves you fuzzy, a little ticklish, so you giggle, a soft "oops," as the freckles dusting his face almost glisten under the warm light.

"hi," you whisper, meeting his eyes; they stare back at you wide in surprise, "can't sleep?"

he looks almost guilty at your question, as if you’ve caught him with the one thing he's been trying to keep from you.

"just—" his voice comes out louder than intended, prompting him to chuckle nervously as he readjusts his volume, "just winding down, sorry."

you inch closer, nuzzling his nose lightly, "it's okay."

"did i wake you?" he asks, cheeks flushing pink as his eyebrows furrow in immediate concern. his expression is something caught between stifling a grin and feeling sorry.

you shake your head against the pillow you share, strands of your hair tangling with his. "just winding down," you tease, watching as his gaze turns softer, eyelids drooping heavier.

sometimes, you think, izuku holds the world in his eyes―a deep, dark green, the color of life. most times, they look at you with wonderment, bright and alive; photos from inko tell you they're the eyes of his inner child.

on nights like this one, however, they hide a depth in them weighted by what you can only assume is time, and all that has happened to him in such a short span of it.

you try your best to understand what lies beneath them, knowing full well he'll never tell you outright what truly bothers him.

"is it the light?" you bring up, some time after laying in silence.

"hm?" he clarifies.

"do you have a hard time sleeping with the nightlight?"

his eyes widen briefly once more, as if shocked that you've caught him again. these split second reactions are ones you've learned to be attentive to when it comes to izuku.

"no," he tries to lie, but you know better as you turn to your nightstand and reach for its switch, "you don't–"

"it was hurting my eyes," you quickly make up an excuse, tucking yourself closer under his chin as you cut off his attempt to deny it again.

finding out that the light was the problem was the easy part—

you'd begun to notice much earlier on that izuku was barely rested on the nights he'd spend at your place. it was only when your old nightlight broke that you began to notice him waking up much later than you did, groggily rousing from a deep sleep.

—what was hard, was figuring out why.

at first, you suspected it was his scars.

"s-sorry, it's not—" he'd warned you, right as your hands gripped the hem of his shirt the first time you were about to have sex, "—it's not nice."

you didn't care though; you still don't care, and you've made that abundantly clear to him since. you love izuku and all his parts―all the nicks and jaggedy pieces of skin that make up who he is.

when you eventually ask him about it, with a request that he be honest with you for once, he tells you that it is and it isn't―the reason why he exclusively sleeps with the lights off, that is.

it's an odd, comforting relationship he has with his body—that he is simultaneously grateful and sorry for how its become a canvas, both painted and marred to symbolize japan’s historic last stand.

you find out the real reason when you catch him staring at his hands.

he does it often, when he thinks you aren't looking—his fists bunched up in the same way he used to watch the power of one for all course through his fingertips; the same way he used to prepare them in battle.

there’s a faraway look in his eyes that lingers, you notice—a little wistful if anything.

“do you miss it?” you finally ask. he gives you the same shocked look he does every time, as if he’s been caught with a secret he’s been trying to hide.

he’s learned a fair bit about you now, too, though—lying to you is futile when you’ve perfected reading his truth. he stares at his fists again as you take a seat beside him, moving to give you space. you rest your head on his shoulder gently, waiting.

“sometimes,” he admits, but you know it’s an understatement.

“i think about the vestiges a lot. i miss them the most, i think,” he continues, clenching his fists tightly, “i always try to reach out to them, but i guess it doesn’t work that way.”

“i… i try to replicate the right conditions every night, but…” then he lets go, stretching his fingers out wide. the scars on the surface ripple through his skin, telling its own story.

you hum, acknowledging what he means. silence sits with the two of you as you take his hand in yours, slowly unfurling his fingers until his palm reveals itself to you. it’s rough to the touch, seasoned with hard work and all that he’s been through.

“is that why you prefer the dark?” you ask softly, after some time.

it's not often that you stay up later than izuku does. when you do though, you catch him shifting in bed, moving from side-to-side. you pretend you aren't awake, but you hear him mumble their names, dwindling in volume as he dozes off to sleep.

he stares at his palm for a moment before he admits quietly, "yeah." his brows furrow as if contemplating whether to say more, but he shakes his head, dark green strands swaying to the beat of his embarrassed chuckle, "nevermind, it's silly."

"it's not."

you intertwine your fingers, sandwiching his hand between yours. a slight sheen glosses over his eyes as he tilts his head up to look at you. he draws in a breath, before it spills over.

"it's..." he finds the words, and you squeeze his hand in comfort, "it's easier to believe it was all real when the lights are out, and that maybe it can happen again."

Katsuki and All Might's vestige...

....and why I think this is the key to Izuku's power coming back. In Ch362 we have seen the visualization of All Might's vestige in Katsuki's mind. Why? It could be symbolic, but it could also be a foreshadowing to Katsuki having a part of OFA in him. Right before Katsuki saves All Might, we get this panel about how "energy from wishing" can change something.

This happens right after the hand-hold scene:

Kudo's reaction is very interesting. There is even a close up of his reaction to All Might's vestige, which could be a hint to him knowing something we don't:

Maybe Izuku unknowingly transferred a part of OFA to Katsuki by wishing him to save All Might. And Kudo knows this, which is why there is another close-up of his face and the hands. Katsuki being a hero who saves All Might is a parallel to Kudo being a hero to Yoichi, who also unknowingly transferred his power to Kudo (by wishing Kudo to save him). Here, for Izuku, Katsuki is a hero who will save All Might. Another interesting details is how AFO starts to see more and more of Kudo in Katsuki after this:

In Ch 406 we again get to see Yoichi and Kudo's hand-hold scene while he is talking to Katsuki - now he is even calling him "Kudo". The topic of his resemblence goes on until he even suspects they might be related by blood:

But what if it's something else? What if he is intimidated by Katsuki because he has a similar aura to Kudo after his power-up? The sudden "side effects" he has could be from OFA rather than his own power. Lastly, similar to the close up of Kudo, in the last page of ch 409, there is a close up panel of Yoichi, who might also have realized that Izuku has transferred a part of OFA to Katsuki. Also, this would mean Katsuki saying he "couldn't have beat him alone" is an ambiguous statement. He probably refers to his friends/other heroes helping him, but it could be another foreshadowing of him having Izuku's power.

If OFA is able to work from the concept of "energy from wishing", Katsuki would be able to transfer OFA back to Izuku. What's important is that the wish comes from his heart.

I FUCKING LOVE that Blackwhip is literally Izuku's heart. Like...these black strings are almost the only thing we get to know about Izuku's emotions and feelings... because he doesn't voice them out...

And about this last point...I feel like the 'lost of Izuku's pov' arc hasn't come to an actual end to be honest...but that we're getting closer...way more closer than before...i feel it.

Deku's final battle: recognising his self-worth

I really wanted Kacchan to tell Izuku he could be a hero without a quirk, but I just realised how important it is for Deku to come to that realisation on his own.

...

Everyone always told him he could never be a hero. Even though he was persistent in pursuing his dream, he was still desperate for validation, haunted by his mother's apology to him after finding out he was quirkless. When All Might tells him he can't be a hero without a quirk, Deku seems to give up. He only accepts the chance to stand in the ring that AM offers him with OFA.

We have yet to see Izuku break free from the feelings that he has to make himself worth everything he was given. While part of this is his own satisfying journey of self-improvement, as Kacchan points out: "deep down, he doesn't take himself into account" (ch284). Izuku lives to be useful and approved of by others.

I would love to see Izuku recognise his inherent worth and unique skills, and to reconnect with a desire to save people, not out of necessity or to be a satisfactory successor, but because it fulfills him.

As for what quirkless hero Izuku could look like:

I don't think AM was wrong for telling Izuku he needed a quirk to be s hero. His logic was sound, and AM has the irreparable injuries and decades of experiences both quirkless and with OFA to back it up. However, AM does not have Izuku's creativity. While they have the same spirit, Izuku' ingenuity, intelligence, and appreciation for different kinds of quirks is his own unique combination. He was never going to be a hero like All Might, as much as a desires it. His stature does not allow it, and the damage he has done to his body means his fighting style is completely different. Izuku has to find his own way.

This could be through support items. I believe All Might's super suit demonstrated his own admiration of Deku as a hero, and teased what Quirkless Pro Hero Izuku could look like.

FINISHED WATCHING MHA MOVIE 2: HEROES RISING!!! SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU HAVENT WATCHED IT

OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS WAS SO GOOD YO HOLY FUCK I LOVE IT AAAAAAAAAAAAA

This was truly My Bakudeku Academia. Watching that final battle felt like a religious experience- as if I was watching the birth of Christ. Holy fuck if that really was the original ending, with Deku passing OFA to Kacchan, and the whole "Oh it actually stayed with Deku and Bkg got amnesia" didn't happen, this would have been a dramatically different story moving forward.

Horikoshi really loves Bakugou- like absolutely no question. The story following this kind of ending would be about him continuing OFA's legacy with the guilt of a thousand suns on his shoulders for "taking away" Izuku's dream. Izuku would have continued the hero course as an actual quirkless student. I would love to see aus of this being canon and continuing their story from there.

I'm guessing Nine here was supposed to be AFO, and he would basically be gone too. Katsuma is perfectly set up to be the next protagonist (I can already imagine him using Cell Regeneration as Super Regeneration- he could become invincible while also healing others. Incredibly amazing quirk).

YES MY GIRL OCHAKO FINALLY HAS HER BIG MOMENT FLOATING SO MUCH DEBRIS!!! I'M SO HAPPY- EVEN JIRO, AOYAMA, SHOJI, TOKOYAMI AND MORE HAD LEGIT GOOD SCENES AND FIGHTS I'M SO FUCKING HAPPY YEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH THEY ARE SOOO COOLLLLL THEY GENUINELY GAVE IT THEIR ALL FUCK YEAHHHHH

(note. THAT WOLF GUY CALLED SHOJI UGLY- A FELLOW HETEROMORPH, CUS HE WAS PROJECTING HIS "MONSTER" ISSUES ON HIM HOW FUCKING DARE YOUUUUU)

THEY ALSO MAKE IT ACTUALLY MAKE MORE SENSE HOW THE WHOLE CLASS IS SEPARATED ON AN ISLAND TOGETHER AS A WHOLE CLASS THIS TIME TOO (and not just half like last movie). They even managed to tie it in to AFO, the LoV, and Hero Society. Like it actually feels more grounded and reasonable why the class would be here alone with supervision.

They even add hints of Touya Todoroki with him having a short battle with Endeavor, Hawks spying in the LoV, the HSPC head cameo, and other little things too. Man I loved this fucking movie I would watch it 10 more times right now.

Headcanon that Tomura is canonically pretty because of the Shimura Genes and those who knew Nana are aware of this. All Might and Izuku see it in him. Gran Torino would rather die than admit it but he sees it as well

I can't stop thinking about the MHA Spider-Verse AU so I'm just gonna make mini points about it:

- okay I don't have all the details but Izuku meets All Might the same time as the canon and AM dies from AFO and his quirk/invention that brings other OFA users to Izuku's dimension

- Perhaps AFO wants to take back OFA not only in his dimension but in every other one as well

- And ofc the whole world finds out that the great All Might is dead along with his true identity Toshinori Yagi, the world's only OFA user was killed and now Izuku is left with a quirk he can't control

- So Izuku's hoplessly left without his teacher before he bumps into old grumpy sweatpants All Might!! Izuku realizes with joy that he's not the only one

- This version of All Might was going through it for a long time, his back story is similar to canon AM but he's more hopeless he doesn't see the point in passing on OFA he's accepted his fate that he'll die gruesomely in a battle but he still powers through

- But ofc!! He bumps into Izuku who pleads with All Might to be his teacher so he can be his universe's OFA user, chaos ensues from there ✨

- Other OFA users will be brought from other dimensions and I'm thinking one could be Mirio from a dimension where AM ends up giving OFA to him, another is Nana from a universe where she doesn't pass it down to AM, and then possibly Bakugo and Uraraka where AM never knew Izuku

- Basically all the other universes where OFA could've been passed down in many different ways

- Throughout the journey Izuku learns how to better handle OFA but he's doubting himself desperately asking All Might when he knows he'll be ready and ofc All Might says he won't, it's a leap of faith

- Then ofc Izuku has his own 'What's Up Danger' scene ✨ and joins the other OFA users in defeating AFO, cementing that in every universe no matter what AFO will always lose

- All Might is so proud of Izuku having grown a lot closer to the boy and thinks that maybe having a successor wouldn't be so bad, before he goes back to his own dimension Izuku tells AM to see if he has his own Deku in his universe

- Just as a little bonus cuz I love Toshinko 🫶 I wanna add to All Might's stress and give him relationship problems, back in his universe he was with Inko but ofc hero work got too dangerous plus she wanted kids and that scared him a bit, so they thought it best to separate

- He ends up bumping into her anyway although it's not in his own dimension, it shocked the hell out of him finding out that she's Izuku's mother but seeing her again just brought all the emotions back

- It further cemented his feelings for her and after growing close to Izuku and feeling better about raising a successor he thinks maybe kids aren't so bad after all, he decides to give his relationship another chance once he's back home 🫶

Here you get to vote for who could be Hisashi Midoriya if all the reasonable contenders were banned and you had brainworms.

i’m angry that izuku’s past is completely overlooked. so many writers do that to their characters and it’s infuriating. if you gave them trauma then fucking take responsibility. tragic backstory are only cool if they continue to impact the character’s day to day life (to a realistic extent only of course)

Say All Might saves Izuku from the sludge villain. But this time some of the sludge villain actually stayed in Izuku all the way up to where All Might tells Izuku to finally take One For All and "Eat this!" Because part of the sludge villain is in Izuku, he takes it upon himself to take/eat the hair instead. Now the plot is trying to stop this OFA powered part of the sludge villain from connecting to the rest of his body in prison and becoming a very OP thug.

So just All Might (#1 hero) and a quirkless middle schooler chasing around a powerful booger. Idk, the concept is just really funny to me.

I just feel like the MHA fandom can do so much more with this sludge villain. Have that part of him control Izuku sometimes or something. You can get a lot of angst, mystery, crack and more outta this villain I feel.

Do you think Izuku felt Kacchan die? Like not that he knew he was dead, but felt like something was really wrong the moment Bakugo's heart stopped? Like he's flying as fast as he can and just for a moment Izuku I'd hit with a big sense of pain and wrongness. And like he lost something. And Kacchan's face flashes in his head for a minute. But than he shakes the thought away. Doesn't allow himself to think it.

mAYBE...even though with Tomura there was a concrete conection as we know, because of OFA and AFO's entanglement... maybeee Izuku could have had the same 'warning' when Katsuki died...

And let me expand on this amazing theory through manga panels back-up!!!

We gotta ask ourselves HOW this 'warning' would happen in canon context, considering both Izuku and Katsuki lack of a quirk similar to Mandalay's or similars...

Well, the answer is pretty easy: the Vestiges.

Izuku and Tomura share, we like it or not, some kind of conection because of OFAFO's resonance and all that thingy going on last chapters of the fight and they're kinda like soulmates for that

So, assuming this as the only way of Izuku 'telepathically gettting a warning' -or however do you wanna call it-, then it would only be possible any kind of situation of this nature to happen between characters who are conected somehow through OFAFO...
