In addition to the hundreds of aircraft that attacked the US Fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Japan sent five midget submarines - small 2-man boats - to attack any ships that tried to flee during the aerial assault.

And all 5 midget submarines failed - the only one that even made it into the harbor was immediately attacked by the USS Ward and sunk. Three others disappeared (and were later found sunk), and one - HA19 - was beached, and the surviving crew member became the first Japanese POW.
