Hey! I adore your work sm and I’m just wondering what type of clay you use?
some of my earlier work is polymer clay (super sculpey in particular is my fav), but most of my stuff now is ceramic! as far as ceramic clays go i just use Laguna's white midfire b-mix mostly, but i've been trying to find a red clay that i like and i think i've found that in rocky mountain clay's flagstone - though i haven't posted any of the pieces i've made with that yet!

I had three hours free this afternoon that was designated Creative Time. On my list of options, I had:
* Make some porcelain heart earrings
* Dig out my silk flower making tools and soft soap and see if I could make porcelain leaves or flowers using some of the brass moulds
* Finish the edits on a piece of fanfic
* Write chapter 6 of my silly Jane Austen story
* Write chapter 22 of my sensible crime novel
* Type up more of my enormous fantasy novel
* Start knitting the gloves I patterned for my friend in January
* Knit the last thumb bit of the fingerless gloves I made most of for Rai in the 2010s
* Use up some of my stoneware clay samples making knitting bowls for me and my knitty friend
* Cut out and sew a new winter pinafore and jacket before the weather cools
* Darn the hole I made in my comfy leggings
* Re-wedge my midfire clay remnants so I can have a big throwing night on Thursday
All such Important Jobs that they were written down on a list of Things To Do On The Long Weekend or ASAP. Instead, I re-sewed the lining of my friend’s thick wool coat in place and darned the big hole in her underarm. It was 28°C here today.
My ridiculous inability to focus has finally driven me to do the unthinkable: I’ve asked Siri to schedule me a daily reminder to write or pot.
Tune in next month for the amusing story of how I threw my bossy and irritating phone through the window.

something that surprised me with clay is how different clay is from clay. I have literally only used midfire stoneware clays (think ordinary mug, not bone china just kinda a mug) and yet still my black clay is an absolute dream to throw (and a nightmare to clean up), the buff stoneware is slightly grainy and textured, not quite as satisfying but still lovely, and now I'm using a white clay which is SO fine that actually it just feels like mud, like there's no texture in there at all, compared to the white we used in my first class which felt like sandpaper...
so much variety so much to learn and play with!

Ran into some issue with my studio only doing midfire firings which would mean the glow-in-the-dark underglaze I purchased is not going to work out. I'm going to look for alternative kiln and glaze options, but it's not looking feasible.

9th Jan 2024
Dear Fran,
this isn't a new image by any means, its actually from 2017 in Kobenhavn. But it encompasses my mood a lot at the moment. Not necessarily grumpy but just tired. I feel like I have this spurts of hyper productivity and then suddenly I am flat again. I've been to barrio this morning, and then had breakfast and unpacked the dishwasher and then made a pile of new components out of the midfire porcelain clay to see how they go. I hope they don't shrink too much. Eeek. AND i've done my emails (which I'd been putting off for days because I'm always nervous to open them) but now I feel like I could nap again even though I stayed in bed until after 8:30 this morning. BLAHHHHH. I feel like I sound like a goat in my head when i type that..
What else? I keep thinking I need to read Louise Bourgeois and maybe some more philosophy and art theory. I worry that my work is becoming too much the same and boring and not conscious of discourse or not critically informed enough. I dont know. I had fun reducing 6m of fabric to about 1.5m squared of plastic last week though. I also painted my offering bowl in the same way I've been painting with the clay slip. Except I used the porcelain slip. God that's such a banal sentence. EVERYTHING FEELS BLAH TODAY. Maybe its the constant gloom of rain. I think im also over being in cbr a bit. I want to be back in my own apartment and going snorkelling now.
I think I'm going to have to call those plastics places because I don't want to leave it to the last minute to get it sorted. I wonder if they can do the drilling of the holes for us too.....probably honestly. Also ,because i'm doubting everything apparently, I'm wondering if doing the rubble installation is too easy? Like is it the easy way out because I cant think of anything better to do? I get the logistics and practical aspects put certain restraints on what you can and cannot do in a space BUT....it is just a pile of stuff on the floor. Is that ohk?
I don't know. I think just having to acknowledge that after everything that happened in December in the Sydney art scene plus the ongoing violence and war around the world is just compounding everything and making me feel very disenfranchised with the art world and society in general. I think I say "I don't know" a lot, especially at the beginning of sentences even if I do, in fact, know what I think or want to say.
Fuck im looking forward to therapy later this week. Ergh.
Until then Athena and I will continue to just be exhausted and skeptical of the world. xxxxx

I have got to ask what kind of glaze you use because those are amazing and as a fellow ceramics person I know how hard it can be to get glaze right and other such. I fucking love your work btw
Hi! Thank you for the question. ^^ AND thanks for being a fan of my work!
Almost all of my work is on mid-fire white stoneware. I use both a combination of food-safe commercial glazes (amaco brand cherrry blossom pink and their lavender, deep sienna speckle (it’s red), matte yellow, a couple of greenish Spectrum glazes) and glazes mixed at the studio (french blue, tyler amber, glossy white, glossy clear, floating blue, cream rust, glossy celadon, matte green, once in a blue moon I’ll try matte blue)
Here’s the ones I use the most:
Celadon
Tumblr media
Basically, my safety glaze. I used it a lot in the beginning, and I still frequently return to this glaze for being a stable, non-runny, reliable, predictable, stress-free, drama-free, surprise-free glaze. This glaze is also very well-known in Korea. It can look teal if applied thick, so I try to make sure to apply it thin to get that green hue.
French Blue
Tumblr media
A glossy warm blue glaze, almost as stable and flawless as celadon. It combines nicely with floating blue or tyler amber to create dark green overlaps. It creates an oil-spot patterning when overlapped on white, or the white glaze vanishes if it’s applied over blue. (glaze formula for glossy white varies from studio to studio, so this isn’t guaranteed to be the case everywhere.)
Tyler Amber
Tumblr media
Glossy warm brown glaze. It emphasizes the grain in the clay. It has a fun property where if it’s applied over french blue, it’ll turn green; and if it’s overlapped with the glossy white, it turns the white tan in color (it happened on the lip in this cup) but doesn’t budge where the white glaze is. When it overlaps with floating blue, it mutes the blueness of the floating blue slightly. Overall reliable worry-free glaze.
Floating Blue
Tumblr media
Blue where it’s applied thicker, bronze where it’s applied thinner. A little runny but very stable and predictable. It’s my favorite glaze to use if I’m making a cup with a fish or ocean related motif.
Amaco “Cherry Blossom” Pink
Tumblr media
My favorite pink glaze after trying out 4 other kinds of pink glazes. The color burns away if the kiln fires above cone 6 though. Mostly I use this glaze as an accent rather than for the whole cup. Plays nice with other glazes, doesn’t do anything too exciting like pitting, crawling, or crazing.
Terrazzo PG618
Tumblr media
My new favorite new glaze! It’s opaque and it looks cookies-and-cream delicious. Or like a color-inverted night sky? Completely glossy, food-safe, plays well with most other glazes.
I try to tag each cup post with the names of the glazes I used on that cup. Check out the tags #celadon #french blue #tyler amber #floating blue #matte green #amaco cherry blossom pink when you see them to see a bunch of pots with those same glazes.
PS to anyone reading: I’m saving up to buy a kiln! If this post was helpful to you and you’d like to send me a few bucks towards the “get a new kiln” and “hire an electrician to wire up the kiln” fund, here’s my ko-fi: http://ko-fi.com/skimlines

I’m so proud of this teapot & I’m working hard to make more pieces like this for my grad school application. I really want to continue learning ceramics & I think by going thru an MFA program I will be pushed to do better.

Embrace the mistake. by erik witsoe Via Flickr: I make mistakes. Tons of them in fact. And of course, I don't always post them. Although far from what I had originally intended when I shot it, I thought upon review today that it was beautiful and quite captivating. Perhaps in this form, it is even a bit more compelling as we have to reach into our imagination to fathom it. Take it for what it is and embrace the mistake! Copenhagen, Denmark Heritage Tour Spring Join me on my personal website Erik Witsoe or contact me at [email protected] for cooperation. Thank you.
