Low-cost method removes micro- and nanoplastics from water
Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil have developed a novel nanotechnology-based solution for the removal of micro- and nanoplastics from water. Their research is published in the journal Micron. Tiny plastic particles are ubiquitous in the world today and may currently be one of the most important environmental problems, after the climate emergency and the accelerating extinction of species and ecosystems. Microplastics are in the soil, water and air, and in the bodies of animals and humans. They come from everyday consumer goods and from wear-and-tear on larger materials. They are found everywhere and in every kind of environment. A major source is the water used to wash clothes made of synthetic fibers. Microplastics currently cannot be filtered out of wastewater and eventually penetrate the soil, water table, rivers, oceans and atmosphere.

I have two (mostly) unrelated mask questions.
Firstly, given the phrase I keep hearing recently that covid "spreads like smoke," is it a sign that my N95 isn't working if I can smell someone's cigarette smoke or vape mist through it?
Secondly, if one wanted to switch from disposable N95s to an elastomeric mask for the purposes of daily wear at an in-person job, how do the protocols for filter reuse work? Can you use the same filter multiple days in a row? Can you do the brown-bag disinfection thing and swap in a different filter each day? Do you need to clean the mask somehow in between each use?
Thank you for any info you may have, I appreciate it.
You can smell things through a mask because many smells are caused by vapors. If you wanted to block vapors, you'd need a P100 elastomeric with specialized cannisters. Covid (and other viruses) spread via aerosols, which are small particles, water droplets that are ~micron sized. Those are caught in the tangled, electostatically charged mesh that makes up a quality mask.
Elastomeric fikters really vary in reuse depending on design and use, but they all typically last much longer for airborne disease prevention than, say, construction work (what they're often rated for). And they all last longer than disposable KN- or N95 masks because the filter media does not make contact with your face, reducing contamination from sweat and skin oils. I've never changed the filters in my MSA elastomeric because it uses splash-proof cannisters, and they still look as clean as the day I got them inside. My flomask, however, becomes visibly dirty after two or so days of extended use, and I change the filter then. If I'm just going to the Asian food market or something quick like a doctor's visit, I can usually reuse that filter for weeks on end, changing it when I see any spots begin to form from spit, sweat, dirt, etc. You should always wipe down your elastomeric after use and clean it with a mild disinfectant if you wear it daily ever couple-few days depending on how sweaty/oily you get. There should be instructions for cleaning included with your elastomeric. Each uses different materials, so the cleaning instructions will vary.

Let's briefly talk about some of the silliest forms of misinformation I've seen floating around where a lot of it comes from a complete misunderstanding of science, and a complete misunderstanding of how things work.
The first one being, "Oh you don't like to breathe fresh air?" [The mask moves in and out as speaker breathes in and out several times]. A mask is literally a filter, so it's filtering the air. So that means that the air that I'm breathing is fresher than the air I would get from just breathing normally without a mask on.
Number two, "You can't breathe in a mask." Completely inaccurate.. I actually work out in these. I go for long runs, I go for fast runs, I do high-intensity interval training, I do weightlifting, all while wearing a mask. Unless you have a significant breathing issue like COPD, you should have no problems.
The next series of ridiculous statements is, "Oh, didn't you know that the covid virus is smaller than the fibres in a mask?" And this is stemming from three or four different areas of complete misunderstanding of the science. The first being the word "aerosol." A lot of people take aerosol to mean, Oh it's just something that floats in the air." So in their minds it's a little virus that's literally just floating in the air, but aerosol is actually shortened for aerosolized droplet, meaning that the virus is not just free-floating it is free-floating in a liquid droplet. And these liquid droplets — while microns small — they are still much larger than the fibre gaps in a mask.
Now one of the nice things about a n95 is that it actually has a positive charge that is permanently adhered to the mask. And why is that? Well, because these virus particles are existing in droplets which are negatively charged. When you have a positive charge, that's going to attract the negative charge and it's going to stick to the outside surface where that positive charge is. Ergo it's not going to flow through the mask.
Second, there's multiple layers of these fibres, typically about three layers. So even if it were to pass through one layer because they're sporadically assembled — sporadically layered — they're going to get caught in the next layer, or the next layer. They're not really going to get through.
The next part of this [mis]understanding is that people don't understand the difference between a surgical mask, a kn95, a n95, a kf94, etc. These are all completely different types of masks.
A lot of people have only ever used surgical masks — these baggy blues over here — and on the box it has a warning saying, "Hey, this is not a respirator, this is not going to protect against covid-19 and other viruses." Because these are designed for splashes; mostly things like blood and water and things like that.
And it should be apparently obvious that, when you're using something like this, there are big holes on the side. You should be able to use your skills of observation and discernment to say that this [a surgical mask], with big old gaps all throughout, is nowhere near the equivalent of this [a duckbill-style respirator]. See the difference? Additionally, these are made of completely different materials so, no, these little surgical masks are not going to protect you against viruses, but these, [pointing to the duckbill mask] will.
This is an n95. See the NIOSH certification right there? [shows the underside of the mask where there is a NIOSH certification]. That's how you know it's an n95. And here's another n95 [shows a box of Aura masks], and as you can read right here, "This respirator helps reduce exposure to certain airborne particles." Like covid. But, "Misuse," not wearing it appropriately, "may result in sickness or death." So, tangled up in this belief that masks don't work is a bunch of fallacies. It's not understanding what an aerosol is — it's an aerosolized droplet, a virus existing in a very very small small liquid drop of water that can exist in the air. Not understanding the difference between masks and how masks work. Not understanding why different masks work against viruses while others don't. And then taking a box label warning for surgical masks and transposing it to all face masks, all respirators. It's ultimately a juvenile lack of understanding.
So, hopefully that helps, if you believed any of those things, hopefully now you don't. Because, ultimately, masks do work. Masks are filters that actually make the air cleaner that you're breathing, and masks are a great public health tool because they both prevent the spread of illness between people that are actually sick, and they prevent you from getting sick yourself."

Re: Ask:
Your blog is one of the reasons I came back to Tumblr. Thanks for maintaining it! Would you mind posting reliable sources that you find on H5N1 , please? Don’t want to panic yet, but now that they found human-to-human transmission, should we?
Hey, thanks!
I just post as I organically see info, or seek it out as-needed, or what I learn in the course of my work — while trying not to be more focused on this than necessary. I'm glad it's useful for others, though there may be temporal and knowledge gaps. Like this one: I don't know as much about H5N1.
The latest I've seen are the articles about this case: US confirms first case of bird flu with no known animal exposure (bbc.com)
Yale News generally has solid info: H5N1 Bird Flu: What You Need to Know > News > Yale Medicine
If you already take layered precautions, you should be OK.
One question I personally had was whether H5N1 viruses (80-120 nm in diameter) are too small to be caught by N95 masks (which have a filtration efficiency of at least 95% for NaCl particles 100–300 nm in size.) USA Today actually has a nice Fact Check article about how masks work — in regards to COVID, but more broadly applicable and interesting:
TL;DR: yes N95s are also effective against viruses smaller than 300 nm.
Excerpts + more:
The size-based argument against N95 laid out in this claim assumes mask filtering works something like water flowing through a net — particles in the water smaller than the net opening pass through, while larger items don’t. But the physics involved don’t work like that at all. The COVID-19 particle is indeed around 0.1 microns in size, but it is always bonded to something larger. “There is never a naked virus floating in the air or released by people,” said Linsey Marr, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech who specializes in airborne transmission of viruses. The virus attaches to water droplets or aerosols (i.e. really small droplets) that are generated by breathing, talking, coughing, etc. These consist of water, mucus protein and other biological material and are all larger than 1 micron. “Breathing and talking generate particles around 1 micron in size, which will be collected by N95 respirator filters with very high efficiency,” said Lisa Brosseau, a retired professor of environmental and occupational health sciences who spent her career researching respiratory protection. ... The N95 filter indeed is physically around the 0.3 micron size. But that doesn’t mean it can only stop particles larger than that. The masks are actually best for particles either larger or smaller than that 0.3 micron threshold. “N95 have the worst filtration efficiency for particles around 0.3,” Marr said. “If you’re smaller than that those are actually collected even better. It’s counterintuitive because masks do not work like sieving out larger particles. It’s not like pasta in a colander, and small ones don’t get through.” N95 masks actually have that name because they are 95% efficient at stopping particles in their least efficient particle size range — in this case those around 0.3 microns. Why do they work better for smaller ones? There are a number of factors at play, but here are two main ones noted by experts: The first is something called “Brownian motion,” the name given to a physical phenomenon in which particles smaller than 0.3 microns move in an erratic, zig-zagging kind of motion. This motion greatly increases the chance they will be snared by the mask fibers. Secondly, the N95 mask itself uses electrostatic absorption, meaning particles are drawn to the fiber and trapped, instead of just passing through.
Only one qualm about that article: it's from 2020 and at the time, based on faulty older science, it was thought that droplets were the big concern and that "there’s not a lot of evidence for aerosol spread" — we've now known for years that this is false: "SARS-CoV-2 primarily spreads through airborne transmission, which is mainly characterized by droplets and aerosols."
It's interesting that they quoted Linsey Marr in that Fact Check because: The 60-Year-Old Scientific Screwup That Helped Covid Kill | WIRED
And H5N1? I'm honestly uncertain, but found this: Aerosolized Exposure to H5N1 Influenza Virus Causes Less Severe Disease Than Infection via Combined Intrabronchial, Oral, and Nasal Inoculation in Cynomolgus Macaques - PMC (nih.gov)

Why N95 Masks Are Essential and How to Use Them Correctly

In today's world, air pollution, respiratory illnesses, and viral outbreaks have made protective gear more critical than ever. Among the various face coverings available, the N95 mask stands out as the most effective in filtering harmful airborne particles. But why are these masks essential, and how can one use them correctly to maximize their protection?
What Is an N95 Mask?
An N95 mask is a type of respirator designed to filter at least 95% of airborne particles, including bacteria, viruses, and pollutants. Unlike surgical or cloth masks, which provide minimal protection against fine particles, N95 masks create a tight seal around the nose and mouth, significantly reducing exposure to harmful substances.
The name "N95" signifies the mask's efficiency level, meaning it can block particles as small as 0.3 microns. This high filtration efficiency makes N95 masks a top choice for healthcare professionals, industrial workers, and individuals living in highly polluted areas.
Why Are N95 Masks Essential?
Superior Filtration Efficiency:
Capable of filtering out hazardous particles, including dust, smoke, and airborne viruses.
Protection in High-Risk Environments:
Used extensively by healthcare workers to shield against infections.
Essential for people in polluted cities like Delhi, where air quality often reaches hazardous levels.
Recommended by Health Authorities:
Organizations like the WHO and CDC emphasize the importance of N95 masks for protection against airborne diseases.
How to Use an N95 Mask Correctly
To ensure maximum protection, an N95 mask must be worn and handled correctly. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Wash Your Hands
Before handling the mask, wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer to prevent contamination.
Step 2: Check the Mask
Inspect for any damage, such as tears or loose straps. Do not use a compromised mask.
Step 3: Position the Mask Properly
Hold the mask with the nosepiece at the top.
Place it over your nose and mouth.
Secure the straps behind your head or ears, ensuring a snug fit.
Step 4: Perform a Fit Test
Cover the mask with both hands and inhale deeply.
If air leaks around the edges, adjust the straps and nosepiece.
Step 5: Avoid Touching the Mask
Once fitted, avoid touching the front of the mask to prevent contamination. If adjustment is needed, clean hands before and after.
Step 6: Safe Removal and Disposal
Wash hands before removing the mask.
Use the straps to lift the mask away from your face without touching the front.
Dispose of it properly or store it safely if it’s reusable.
Wash hands after removal.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Ill-fitting mask: A loose mask reduces effectiveness.
Reusing disposable masks excessively: Overuse diminishes filtration capacity.
Touching the front of the mask: This increases contamination risk.
Not covering both nose and mouth: Leaving the nose exposed reduces protection.
Not washing hands before and after use: Proper hygiene prevents infections.
Final Thoughts
The N95 mask remains one of the most effective tools for protecting against airborne pollutants and infectious diseases. However, their effectiveness depends on correct usage, proper fitting, and regular replacement. Whether you are a healthcare professional, someone with respiratory conditions, or living in a polluted environment, using an N95 mask properly can significantly reduce health risks. Stay informed, stay protected, and use your N95 mask wisely.

Hire Sydney’s top cleaning specialists that offer environment-friendly hospitality cleaning solutions
Recent developments in technology have transformed the hospitality industry. Among these innovations, the industry has benefited tremendously from the latest innovations in hospitality cleaning solutions.
The convenience brought about by state-of-the-art technologies has made cleaning duties less labour-intensive. They have also improved workforce productivity and cost-saving measures for hospitality businesses.
The latest innovations in hospitality cleaning solutions have also been designed to contain environment-friendly chemicals by eliminating or reducing pollution and protecting biodiversity, in line with the global effort to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Choosing the right commercial cleaning service solutions is important for the hospitality industry as exposure to particular chemicals and toxins could potentially cause irreversible damage to employees, customers, and the surrounding ecosystem.
That said, here are the 6 latest innovations in hospitality cleaning solutions which have transformed the hospitality industry.
1. Green and sustainable cleaning products
Among the most popular developments in hospitality cleaning are eco-friendly cleaning products. They typically contain vinegar, baking soda, lemon, essential oils, water, and plant ingredients which are non-toxic, biodegradable, and not harmful to humans, animals, and nature.
Such cleaning chemicals are safe for both indoor and outdoor environments. For effective sanitisation, cleaners are recommended to use green products which have citric acid, peroxide, and lactic acid.
Cleaning products which are accredited by Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) typically fit this purpose. Green and sustainable cleaning chemicals should also contribute to a zero-landfill policy.
2. Ultraviolet(UV)-C disinfection
The disinfection method through UVC rays became more prominent during the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. When applied to a cleaning machine, UVC cleaners use germicidal lights that combine with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters which trap 99.7% of particulate air which is 0.3% microns.
UVC rays are particularly effective in destroying the molecular bonds which support the DNA structure of bacteria and viruses. This includes preventing ‘superbugs’ that have developed a stronger than usual resistance to antibiotics from spreading.
UVC rays are also a chemical-free and environmental-friendly solution to fight off microorganisms from reproducing in any environment.
3. VCT floor cleaning technology
The floor of a premises which many people step on is bound to be subjected to tough wear, stains, and damage over time.
Even with thin coats of polymer or wax finish that gives off a glossy, reflective coating above the floor surface, the film could wear off with time.
Hence, applying vinyl composite flooring (VCT) is a long-lasting solution to ensuring that flooring is more durable, resilient, and helps restore the state of the flooring closer to its original condition.
4. Battery-powered equipment
Employees who are tasked with various housekeeping duties, including cleaning, can spend less time performing manual cleaning tasks, with the advent of battery-powered cleaning equipment. Some examples of battery-powered cleaning technology include cordless vacuums, floor scrubbers, and ride-on sweepers, that maximise the operating time, efficiency, and productivity of employees.
Battery-powered cleaning equipment are gaining popularity due to their advances in energy density that reduce weight and size, while simultaneously improving their durability. These battery-powered equipment are environment-friendly, reducing the need for fossil fuels and lowering overall greenhouse gas emissions.
The batteries used in these cleaning equipment may come in the form of solid-state batteries, or Gel or Lithium-ion.
5. Electrostatic sprayer disinfectant
When it comes to developing the safest and most efficient method for sanitising spaces, the electrostatic sprayer disinfectant hits the mark.
This disinfectant can be applied on almost any surface, takes up less time, and has better cleaning coverage than traditional cleaning methods. This spray electrostatically charges liquids, such as sanitisers and disinfectants, as it passes through the spray nozzle.
Charged droplets are generated which repel one another and actively seek out a surface. If applied correctly, these droplets have a higher success rate of coating all sides of a surface, even in hard-to-reach places that manual cleaners could miss.
6. Autonomous mobile robots (AMR)
With the emergence of IR 4.0 technology that is powered by artificial intelligence (AI), machine intelligence, and IoT, it’s no surprise that the hospitality industry has benefited extensively from the presence of AMR.
The high-performing, self-driven solutions have sensor detectors that avoid humans and pets, while carrying out cleaning decisions which reflect human input.
This especially helps reduce the workload required from a cleaning team, but also helps them to improve their productivity by focusing on other high-value tasks or cleaning duties. AMR can perform autonomous mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming in a designated area.
Hire Sydney’s top cleaning specialists that offer environment-friendly hospitality cleaning solutions

Tired of Spring Allergies? Here’s How to Breathe Easier This Season
Spring is a time of renewal, blooming flowers, and warmer temperatures. However, for millions of people, it also signals the arrival of sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes caused by seasonal allergies. If you suffer from spring allergies, an air purifier could be your secret weapon for cleaner, fresher indoor air. Let’s explore how to combat allergens and improve your overall well-being this allergy season.
Understanding Spring Allergies
Spring allergies, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever, are triggered by airborne allergens, primarily pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers. Other common indoor allergens, like dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores, can further exacerbate allergy symptoms.
Common Symptoms of Spring Allergies
Sneezing and nasal congestion
Itchy or watery eyes
Runny nose
Scratchy throat
Coughing
Fatigue
Sinus pressure and headaches
These symptoms occur when the immune system overreacts to allergens, releasing histamines that cause inflammation and irritation. For many people, allergy medications provide temporary relief, but improving indoor air quality can help reduce exposure to allergens at the source.
How Air Purifiers Help with Spring Allergies
An air purifier for allergies is an effective way to filter out airborne allergens and create a healthier indoor environment. Here’s how air purifiers can help during allergy season:
1. Capturing Pollen and Other Allergens
Pollen particles are small and easily enter homes through open windows, doors, and even on clothing. A HEPA air purifier (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) can trap up to 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust, and pet dander. This significantly reduces allergen exposure indoors.
2. Reducing Dust and Pet Dander
Even if pollen is the primary trigger, indoor allergens like dust mites and pet dander can worsen allergy symptoms. Air purifiers continuously filter the air, removing these particles before they settle on surfaces and furniture.
3. Eliminating Mold Spores
Spring brings increased humidity, which can lead to mold growth. Mold spores can be a significant allergy trigger, causing respiratory issues and worsening symptoms for allergy sufferers. Air purifiers with HEPA and activated carbon filters can help trap mold spores and prevent them from circulating in the air.
4. Neutralizing Odors and VOCs
In addition to allergens, activated carbon filters in air purifiers help remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs), smoke, and household odors, creating a fresher indoor environment.
Choosing the Best Air Purifier for Allergies
Not all air purifiers are created equal. To effectively combat spring allergies, look for these essential features:
True HEPA Filter – Captures pollen, dust, mold spores, and pet dander.
Activated Carbon Filter – Absorbs odors and airborne chemicals.
High Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) – Ensures efficient air purification.
Smart Sensors and Auto Mode – Adjusts filtration levels based on air quality.
Quiet Operation – Allows for uninterrupted sleep and comfort.
Additional Tips to Reduce Spring Allergies at Home
Using an air purifier is just one step in allergy management. Here are some additional strategies to keep your indoor air as allergen-free as possible:
1. Keep Windows and Doors Closed
While fresh air is tempting, it also invites pollen inside. Use an air purifier instead to maintain air circulation while keeping allergens out.
2. Vacuum with a HEPA Filter
Regular vacuuming helps remove settled pollen and dust. A vacuum with a HEPA filter prevents allergens from being released back into the air.
3. Wash Bedding Frequently
Pollen and dust can cling to bedding. Wash sheets, pillowcases, and blankets weekly in hot water to eliminate allergens.
4. Shower After Being Outdoors
Pollen can stick to hair and clothing. Taking a shower and changing clothes after spending time outside can prevent allergens from spreading inside your home.
5. Use a Dehumidifier
High humidity can encourage mold growth. Keeping indoor humidity levels between 30-50% helps reduce mold and dust mite populations.
Why Choose Lifubide Air Purifiers for Allergy Relief?

Whether used in RO systems, water purifiers, or industrial filtration units, carbon filters are known for their ability to remove impurities, odors, and harmful chemicals from water.
we provide premium-quality carbon filters designed for maximum filtration efficiency. In this blog, we’ll explore the importance, types, benefits, and factors to consider when choosing a carbon filter.
What is a Carbon Filter?
A carbon filter is a water filtration component that uses activated carbon to absorb and remove contaminants, chlorine, bad taste, and odors from water. It works by trapping organic compounds, sediments, and harmful chemicals, making the water cleaner, tastier, and safer for consumption.
Types of Carbon Filters
There are different types of carbon filters used in water purification systems:
1. Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Filter
✔️ Made of loose carbon granules ✔️ Effective in removing chlorine, bad taste, and odors ✔️ Used in pre-filtration for RO and water purifiers
2. Carbon Block Filter
✔️ Compressed activated carbon for higher filtration efficiency ✔️ Removes sediments, heavy metals, and organic contaminants ✔️ Commonly used in RO water purifiers and home filtration units
3. Coconut Shell Carbon Filter
✔️ Made from natural coconut shells for eco-friendly filtration ✔️ Highly effective in removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) ✔️ Enhances the taste and purity of drinking water
4. Catalytic Carbon Filter
✔️ Specialized for removing chloramines and hydrogen sulfide ✔️ Used in industrial and commercial filtration systems ✔️ Provides advanced filtration for highly contaminated water
Key Benefits of Using a Carbon Filter
✅ Removes Chlorine & Harmful Chemicals – Enhances water taste and safety by eliminating unwanted chemicals. ✅ Improves Water Taste & Odor – Absorbs bad smells and taste, ensuring fresh drinking water. ✅ Eco-Friendly & Natural Filtration – Uses organic carbon materials for safe and sustainable water purification. ✅ Protects RO Membranes – Works as a pre-filter to enhance the lifespan of RO systems. ✅ Cost-Effective & Long-Lasting – Provides affordable and durable water filtration.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Carbon Filter
