It states that labile (easily chemically changed) organic sources like fibrous roots and herbaceous greens form more stable SOM faster than woody, more fibrous organic matter. Why? Because SOM is formed by microbial byproducts, not decomposed plant matter, so the faster and easier something is to digest and break down the more it mineralizes through more microbes and the faster it turns into byproducts like enzymes & polysaccharides Although its controvercial to common belief, it makes sense if you think about it. "This framework leads to the hypothesis that labile plant constituents are the dominant source of microbial products, relative to input rates, because they are utilized more efficiently by microbes.
