A Formula One Race Winner Has Come Out as Gay

There have been gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, transgender racing drivers, drivers of various sexualities and sexual identities. That being said, very few have the luxury of being open about it. Motorsports is expensive, elite, and exclusive, thus the demographics tend to be overwhelmingly conservative. Furthermore, when your overalls are plastered with a lot of companies paying your team a lot of money, you don't want to appear controversial.

You don't want to rock the boat.

Thus, in the past, LGBTQ+ individuals in motorsport have largely been closeted within the sport, and have come out afterwards. See Hurley Haywood, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1977, 1983, and 1994, along with the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1991. Hurley raced from 1971 to 2012, however, he did not come out as gay until he published his autobiography in 2018.

See also Mike Beuttler, a British F1 driver from the early 1970s who was closeted, albeit his sexuality has been described by Ian Philips as an open secret in the paddock. Beuttler would race privateer March cars in 1971, 1972, and 1973, but would not score any points under the top six points system. That being said, under the current points scheme, he would've scored 5 points in '72 courtesy of an 8th and a 10th placed finish, and 12 points in '73 courtesy of two 10th placed finishes, a 7th, and an 8th.

Beuttler had to bring a woman with him to the race track to pose as his girlfriend, and he would die of AIDS in Los Angeles in 1988. He never had the chance to live as an openly gay man.

Likewise, Michelle Duff and Caitlyn Jenner transitioned well after their racing days were over with. Duff took two 250cc Grand Prix Motorcycling wins with Yamaha (Belgium 1964 and Finland 1965) as well a single 125cc win (Netherlands 1965).

Jenner, at that time better known as an Olympic track and field runner, took a class win at Sebring in 1986, codriving the #7 7-Eleven Ford Mustang for Roush Racing along with Scott Pruett. Jenner would, as a woman, then make a return to the racing world in 2022 when she owned the W Series team of Jamie Chadwick and Chloe Chambers. Unfortunately, W Series would fold midseason that same year.

Speaking of W Series, much like Women's Football (Soccer), homosexuality is more common among racing women than their male counterparts. Abbie Eaton and girlfriend Jessica Hawkins, along with Sarah Moore, all raced in W Series.

That also brings us to the person who was, hitherto, the most successful queer person in Formula One, Italian lesbian Lella Lombardi. Lella race only a few years after Beuttler and, like him, would spend her career in privateer cars. Four times in a Brabham, making the race once, once in a Williams when she made the race but did not start, and most often in a March.

It was in a Lavazza sponsored March 751 where Lella Lombardi would survive the treacherous 1975 Spanish Grand Prix to finish sixth, albeit with the race being called after just 29 laps, she only received half points. That 0.5 of a point was all that us queer Formula One fans had to hold onto.

Until now.

Ralf Schumacher, the younger brother of Michael, had his breakthrough year in the junior series just as Michael won his second championship in 1995. In this year, Ralf would finish second in the German Formula 3 Championship, second in the Formula 3 Monaco Grand Prix, second in the Masters of Formula 3 race at Zandvoort, and would win the illustrious Macau Grand Prix.

Ralf would follow up this Far Eastern success by winning the 1996 Formula Nippon Championship, nowadays better known as Super Formula. Furthermore, he would finish second in the All-Japan Grand Touring Championship (Super Formula), only beaten out by the duo of sports car ace David Brabham and John Nielsen.

This success would be enough to land Ralf a Formula One seat at Jordan, the same team that his brother started out with in the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix. Unlike in 1991 though, but 1997, Jordan was becoming a proper force.

The Benson & Hedges sponsorship with the iconic yellow and black color scheme, plus the upcoming switch from Peugeot power in 1997 to Mugen-Honda power in 1998 would turn Jordan into a legitimate championship contender by 1999...unfortunately, Ralf would not make it that far.

At the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, complete chaos resulted in the Jordans of Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher running 1-2. Ralf was catching Damon, however, with the team's first win on the line, Jordan ordered the drivers to hold position and protect the 1-2. Jordan would get the perfect finish, however, it would result in a falling out between Michael Schumacher and Eddie Jordan.

Michael would buy Ralf out of his Jordan contract, and Ralf would sign for Williams instead.

Initially, Williams brought a beauty of a 1999 car with its red, white, yellow, and blue Winfield colors, but the aesthetics could not make up for the outdated Supertec badged Renault engines. Nevertheless, Ralf's three podiums and fifth-placed points finish was enough for Williams to finish fifth in the constructors' championship, despite the fact that teammate Zanardi failed to score a point.

The new millennium would bring changes to Williams, as gone was the tobacco sponsorship and in came BMW engines and a host of tech sponsorships, particularly Compaq and Allianz. Ralf was now the German driver for a team running German engines, and with his teammate being the then-youngest rookie in F1 history in the form of Jenson Button, Ralf was expected to be the team leader.

Well, he scored 24 of the team's 36 points and they would finish 3rd in the constructors' championship. It wasn't a bad season, but it would certainly fail to live up to the high expectations of BMW. They would go back to the drawing board for 2001.

And they came loaded for fucking bear.

Ralf Schumacher in one car, 1999 CART champion and 2000 Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya in the other. An 880 horsepower hand grenade of a BMW V10, and not a goddamn lick of downforce to slow that motherfucker down.

It was glorious.

Ralf would have his breakout year in this car, winning at San Marino, Canada, and the German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring, while Montoya would claim the Cathedral of Speed with his win at Monza. 49 points for Ralf in P4 and 31 points for JPM in P6 marked a resurgence for a team as well. They were still 3rd in the constructors, but now they were doing it with style.

Shame Ferrari decided to eviscerate everyone else in 2002.

Still, Ralf won the Malaysian Grand Prix, finished fourth in the standings, and with Montoya in third, Williams overtook McLaren for second in the constructors.

That did mark a bit of a shift in the team though, because Juan Pablo Montoya had adapted to Formula One, and he would lead the team in 2003. JPM would win Monaco and Germany to finish third in the standings, just nine points off of Michael, while Ralf would be down in fifth.

Nevertheless, he went back-to-back in Europe and France, leading Williams 1-2 finishes at the Nürburgring and Magny-Cours. These are, to this day, the most recent 1-2 finishes for the Williams team.

Ralf would fail to win in 2004 and his season would be defined by a horror crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course for the United States Grand Prix. Marc Gene and then Anthony Pizzonia would replace him for the next three months, and this would effectively see out Ralf's contract with Williams.

His Toyota stint would start well enough in 2005, taking two podiums and finishing just ahead of teammate Jarno Trulli in the standings, however he would again crash at the USGP, this time in practice. His second crash there in as many years would signal a major issue with the Michelin tyres, eventually leading to a massive controversy where only six Bridgestone-clad cars raced, handing the win to Michael Schumacher of Ferrari.

After this though, Ralf's career would fade. Down to 10th in the standings in 2006, and just 16th in 2007. At the end of that year, he would leave Formula One to compete for Mercedes in DTM, without much success.

Ralf's career ended with somewhat of a whimper, and he would go on to become a bit of a controversial pundit in the following years. His criticism of Lewis Hamilton in 2020 particularly stood as a black eye for many fans. That being said, this is a man with six Grand Prix wins, a man who went toe-to-toe with the likes of Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, and Juan Pablo Montoya.

At the 2001 Canadian Grand Prix, Ralf would get the honor of not only winning, but finishing 1-2 with his brother, for the first sibling 1-2 in Formula One history.

All of this has led for me to maintain that Ralf Schumacher was a good driver who did a lot with a Williams that was strong in a straightline but lacked the aerodynamic grunt of Ferrari and McLaren.

Then, on June 14th, 2024, Ralf posted a pic of him with his arm around a man talking about how good it is to have a loving partner. Ralf's friend Carmen Geiss then elaborated, congratulating Ralf on his bravery for coming out, and specifying that he is gay. We now have our first gay Formula One race winner.

This is huge. In a day, we've gone from zero Grand Prix wins for a gay driver to six. In a time where very few male athletes have come out as gay, Formula One has a gay driver who is still a pundit, still involved in the sport in some way.

As scary as it is to be an LGBTQ+ individual in a socially conservative paddock that races in openly homophobic countries like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar, and see some of the hooliganism and vitriol coming from the Orange Army of Max Verstappen fans, those gay, bi, trans, lesbian, etc, etc people are no longer alone.

That is big.

There is still work to be done - I've gone through some old forum posts and found out that in 2003, Ralf was harassed by British and German tabloids who claimed that one: he was a partner in a gay nightclub, and two: his then-wife Cora was cheating on him with another man. These are destructive, invasive rumors that could make anyone want to hide their sexuality for as long as possible.

Now, nearly twenty years after his Formula One career, Ralf has finally felt safe enough to reveal this.

Ultimately...

It was an underwhelming red carpet. The Met Gala serves an incredible purpose, but they've moved too far away from fashion and costume. There are too many actors and people-famous-for-being-famous involved now that have really watered down the fashion, the themes, and the cultural significance of the event. It needs to go back to being the New York elite and High Fashion - people who know how to wear clothes instead of posing with their hands on their hips, sticking out their butts, and pouting.

Not romantic chemistry, but overall onscreen chemistry...

I think in Marvel Chris basically had chemistry with everyone.

Actually, I think if he was still in the franchise they might actually be doing better. A while back on twitter fans were reminiscing how the old Marvel OGs vibed and hit way better than the new generation. People were saying Chris had fun with virtually everyone he was paired up with during those Avengers press tours and there was always laughter and hilarity in those interviews he participated in. His personality was just inviting and charismatic and I really think it rubbed off on a lot of people. Not everyone, but the majority. And I think now that he's no longer there, there is a hole.

He and RDJ really had chemistry. Hemsworth. Scarlett. Renner. Elizabeth Olsen. Chadwick.

Danai and him didn't have too many scenes on camera but IRL they vibed very well.

While not everyone appeared to get along with Brie Larsen when she first showed up, her and Chris vibe well.

Him and Don Cheadle have great hilarious snarky banter.

Even him and Frank Grillo - everyone has to hate on the whole Hydra thing but they actually had chemistry. It was weird but interesting. Makes that whole dynamic also intriguing and terrible.

Anthony Mackie and Chris have excellent chemistry. IMHO, Steve and Sam's friendship was one of my favorites - they immediately lit up the screen upon first meeting. I wish they explored that friendship more when they could have.

Outside of Marvel, I think Chris has great chemistry with Octavia Spencer. I also thought he did better with Betty Gabriel in Defending Jacob than Michelle Dockery. Maybe because Betty's character wasn't his wife and he just does better when he's teaming up with someone or portraying a friendship or even a nemesis.

Bryce Dallas Howard and him did pretty well. I think she's a really good actress too and that pairing of their characters actually worked for me.

Overall, I thought Chris and everyone else in Knives Out had great chemistry. Not a single miss IMHO. I also think that was one of the best casts of modern times. I'm a bit confused, annoyed, and irritated as to why they didn't get a Best Ensemble Cast nomination.

I agree with all this. No one has to ever complained about him on set. Everyone seems to get along with him well. He just can’t fake being in love 🤷🏻‍♀️ being a love interest is his weakness.

i know the oscars are a sham and we've been through this every cycle, I wanna be hopeful for Angela Bassett and Michelle Yeoh. I'm scared that the Oscars will let us down when it comes to certain wins like how Green Book won best picture in 2019 and when Chadwick Boseman, Riz Ahmed and Steven Yeun all lost to Anthony Hopkins for best actor (this still made me upset)

They really are a sham but Michelle and Angela are so deserving of those oscars. Also why did you have to remind me about those wins?!?!? Ugh I used to like Anthony Hopkins but ever since then I've refused to watch him.

Haterating and hollerating through the '90s:

POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE (1990): Carrie Fisher scripted this witty adaptation of her novel about coked-up, pill-popping actress Suzanne Yale (Meryl Streep), who overdoses in the bed of a strange man (Dennis Quaid), ends up in rehab, and learns that the only way the production insurance company will let her keep working is if she stays with her mother, an aging singer-actress-diva (Shirley MacLaine) whose love for her daughter is equaled only by her tireless determination to upstage her. (No, it's not autobiographical at all, why do you ask?) Fisher's deftly paced, funny script weaves in various serious mother-daughter moments without ever becoming mawkish, and offers a fabulous part for MacLaine, who has a ball poking fun at herself as well as Debbie Reynolds, Fisher's real-life mother and the obvious basis for the film's lightly fictionalized "Doris Mann." Curiously, the weakest link is Streep, who never quite sheds her customary air of prim affectation and always seems ill at ease with Fisher's layers of self-deprecating, sarcastic humor. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Apparently not, although I had questions about Suzanne's rehab friend Aretha (Robin Barlett). VERDICT: MacLaine's finest hour, but Streep's primness keeps it "good" rather than "great."

TERESA'S TATTOO (1993): Painfully unfunny crime comedy, directed by Melissa Etheridge's then-GF Julie Cypher and costarring Cypher's ex, Lou Diamond Phillips, along with an array of incongruously high-profile actors like Joe Pantoliano, Tippi Hedren, Mare Winningham, Diedrich Bader, k.d. lang (!), Sean Astin, Emilio Estevez, and Kiefer Sutherland, most in bit parts (some of them unbilled). The headache-inducing plot concerns a couple of brain-dead thugs whose elaborate hostage scheme hits a snag when their hostage (Adrienne Shelly) accidentally dies. Their solution is to kidnap lookalike Teresa (also Adrienne Shelly), a brainy Ph.D. candidate, and disguise her to look like the dead girl — including giving her a matching tattoo on her chest — in the hopes that the dead girl's idiot brother (C. Thomas Howell) won't notice the switch until it's too late. This truly bad grade-Z effort, barely released theatrically, feels like either a vanity project or a practical joke that got out of hand, and is interesting mostly as a curiosity for Melissa Etheridge fans: The soundtrack is M.E.-heavy, and Etheridge herself has a brief nonspeaking role. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Technically? (Etheridge has no lines and lang plays a Jesus freak.) VERDICT: May erode your affection for M.E.

BLUE JUICE (1995): Tiresome comedy-drama about an aging surfer (a terribly miscast, painfully uncomfortable-looking Sean Pertwee) who's still determined to continue living like a 20-year-old surf bum with his obnoxious mates, even though his back is giving out and he's perilously close to driving away his girlfriend (a disconcertingly hot 25-year-old Catherine Zeta Jones), who is keen for him to finally cut the shit. Meanwhile, the scummiest of his mates (Ewan McGregor) doses their pal Terry (Peter Gunn) and gets him to chase after an actress from his childhood favorite TV show (Jenny Agutter) in hopes of dissuading from marrying his actual girlfriend (Michelle Chadwick), and their mate Josh (Steven Mackintosh), a successful techno producer, flirts with an attractive DJ (Colette Brown) who's actually furious at him for building a vapid techno hit around a sample of her soul singer dad's biggest hit. The latter storyline probably had the most potential (although a weird scene where Josh is castigated by a group of outraged soul fans seems like a lesser TWILIGHT ZONE plot), but none of the script's various threads ever amounts to much. CONTAINS LESBIANS? It doesn't even pass the Bechdel test. VERDICT: If you happen upon it, you may be tempted just for Zeta Jones (and/or Brown), but the rest wears out its welcome with alacrity.

HIGHER LEARNING (1995): Potent story of simmering racial tensions on the campus of a university that definitely isn't USC (writer-director John Singleton's alma mater, and where most of the film was obviously shot), let down by incredibly heavy-handed execution. (The film's final shot is of the word "UNLEARN" superimposed over a giant American flag!) A capable cast (including Omar Epps, Kristy Swanson, Michael Rapaport, Jennifer Connelly, Ice Cube, Tyra Banks, Cole Hauser, Laurence Fishburne, and Regina King) tries to maintain a sense of emotional reality through Singleton's frequent excursions into overpowering melodrama, but there are so many competing plot threads that few characters have any depth; curiously, the script's most complex characterization is in the scenes between budding white supremacist Remy (Rapaport) and Aryan Brotherhood organizer Scott (Hauser). Singleton made this film when he was 25, and there's no shame in its sense of breathless ambition (even if it inevitably bites off more than it can chew), but the overwrought stridency undercuts its intended impact. For a more effective treatment of similar themes in roughly the same period, try Gilbert Hernandez's graphic novel X, originally serialized in LOVE & ROCKETS #31–39 and first collected in 1993. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Jennifer Connelly gives Kristy Swanson a bisexual awakening. VERDICT: The '90s through a bullhorn.

CRASH (1996): Divisive David Cronenberg adaptation of the J.G. Ballard novel, about a movie producer called James Ballard (James Spader) and his desperately horny wife (Deborah Kara Unger), drawn into a loose-knit group of car-crash fetishists organized around a man called Vaughan (Elias Koteas at his creepiest), who stages recreations of famous celebrity crashes like the 1955 accident that killed James Dean. Despite some pretentious dialogue about "the reshaping of the human body by modern technology," the controlling idea might be better summarized as "anything can be a paraphilia if you get weird enough about it." Part of what offends people about the film is that Cronenberg deliberately treats the entire story with the same frosty clinical detachment, rendering the "normal" sex scenes just as remote and perverse as the characters' fixation on the grisly aftermath of car wrecks; the point is that there is no line, just different facets of the same erotic longing, which each of the (admittedly unsympathetic) principal characters embodies in different ways. Spader, Kara Unger, and Koteas are very good, as is Holly Hunter, in perhaps the bravest role of her career, but Rosanna Arquette is underutilized. A worthwhile companion piece would be Steven Soderbergh's 1989 SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE, also with Spader, which is much more highly regarded (though almost as contrived and scarcely less perverse), perhaps because it seeks to titillate where Cronenberg does not. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Briefly. (See previous note in re: underutilization of Rosanna Arquette.) VERDICT: Icy but interesting.

The fun and fear of guest hosting All Things Considered

As a longtime NPR nerd, I have often listened to the smooth, smart anchors leading broadcasts of our newsmagazines and wondered: Could I do that?

Last Saturday and Sunday, I found out, when I got the chance to fill in for Michel Martin as guest anchor on Weekend All Things Considered.

I knew from a stint guest hosting CNN’s late, lamented media analysis show Reliable Sources years ago, that even a temporary host can have lots of influence over a show. The key is to assemble a lineup of interviews and stories which are informative and newsy, but also show off the host’s strengths by speaking to their expertise, enthusiasms and abilities.

For me, it was also an opportunity to pull together some dreamed-about interviews, backed by the appeal to the subject of appearing on a newsmagazine which reaches millions of listeners over a weekend. My biggest fear: breaking news which would require lots of live anchoring; fortunately, the news gods smiled down and people seemed to chill out for the holiday weekend.

Their quality is a real testament to the staff at Weekend All Things Considered, who were supportive, understanding of a newbie’s nerves and so good at their jobs, it made speaking to an audience of millions exhilarating and fun – and only a little bit scary.

I’m a late-night TV nerd. So it was beyond fulfilling to get two of the smartest comics in late night to spend a little time talking about the future of late night TV and whether it makes sense to call out comics out for monologues which seem, for some, to encourage and/or minimize antisemitism or prejudice. The Daily Show’s Roy Wood Jr. and The Amber Ruffin Show’s Jenny Hagel were super smart, super funny and super thoughtful in this discussion, which you can hear by clicking here. Flying to Washington DC on Thanksgiving night, I was astonished to see tech journalist Kara Swisher taking apart Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk in a series of tweets where she called him her biggest disappointment in 25 years as a tech reporter. During a staff a meeting the next day, I asked the team: Do you think we could get Swisher to talk with us about what happened? So I was proud and honored to feature a revealing interview with Elegance Bratton, director/writer of the new film The Inspection, a movie based on his own life about a Black, gay homeless man -- rejected by his homophobic mother – who seeks refuge in the Marines. Stuff like this has happend before, where they market the entire ceremony on this on person winning and make it into this big deal only to give the award to somebody else most recently with Chadwick Boseman and Anthony Hopkins. What I wanna know is how close was Cate Blanchett to winning last year because the entire season I was sure Michelle Yeoh was gonna take it but based on what happened last did Michelle barely get enough votes? Because the buzz for Lily was there she won SAG which is usually a big indicator who's gonna win the oscar...like wtf happened here.

The Academy is very, very racist, and they put a bandaid on it after the #OscarsSoWhite thing by being like "look, we added more women and more people of color!" (Tbh, the more women thing, and I say this as a white woman... is a meager bandaid, because a lot of those women are going to vote for white ladies, and I sure bet a lot of them did this year, so.)

They're still heavily white, and you can literally see the discomfort they have with recognizing poc. Why didn't Charles Melton get a nom? Why was Past Lives so shut out? Could it have... anything... to do with a movie with a predominantly Asian cast all but sweeping last year?

I mean, for that matter--really, why did JLC, who was in that movie for a minute amount of time, with very little MEANINGFUL screentime, win over Angela Bassett and Stephanie Hsu? That would've made the majority of acting winners poc, versus half.

They use poc to promote the ceremony, but they won't consistently award actors of color. They'll have the first Asian woman to win Best Actress one year, but they will not follow it with the first Native woman to win this year.

I mean, I think two women of color total (Michelle Yeoh and Halle Berry) have won that award (Best Actress, specifically). They promoted Lily as someone who would only be breaking barriers because she would've been the first Native winner, but ffs barely any women who aren't white have won it at all.
