Hildesheim

Hildesheim ist eine Stadt in Niedersachsen mit etwa einhunderttausend Leuten, die dreißig Kilometer von Hannover liegt. Die Stadt ist sehr historisch, und ihre Michaeliskirche und ihr Hildesheimer Dom sind ein Weltkulturerbe. Heute ist Hildesheim an das moderne Verkehrsnetz gut angeschlossen: die Stadt liegt an der Bundesautobahn 7, die von Ellund nach Füssen geht, und der Hauptbahnhof hat stündliche Intercity-Express-Züge zwischen Frankfurt und Berlin. Der Marktplatz, mit dem Knochenhauerantshaus, Bäckeramtshaus, Rathaus und Tempelhaus, wurde im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört aber wurde später wiederhergestellt. Andere Sehenswürdigkeiten in Hildesheim sind der Umgestülpte Zuckerhut, das Römer-und-Pelizäus-Museum, die Bürgerkirche St. Andreas, und die Burg Steuerwald.

Johann Sebastian Bach

J.S. Bach's life and career was confined to a very limited geographical space. Born and raised in Thuringia, Eisenach, the musician never strayed far from his homeland. Bach's family was one of several traditional families of musicians, living as instrumentalists and singers in the city. Bach would eventually lose both of his parents, becoming an orphan at the age of 9. Young Bach then went to live with his brother Johann Christoph Bach. This turned out to be his first piano teacher, although the young man was already talented by then. When his brother could no longer support him, Bach and his school friend Georg Erdmann left for Lüneburg. This happened in 1700. In that locality there was the Latin School, which accepted needy children, with the commitment to reward their studies by singing in the choir of the Church of S. Miguel (Michaeliskirche). This school was linked to a relevant musical tradition, providing the young musician with quality musical training. After a brief period at school, Bach was already considered an organ virtuoso. In 1703, Bach is hired as a violinist for the private chapel of the Duke of Weimar, Johann Ernst. It didn't take long for Bach to get his first serious job, being appointed, that same year, organist of the new church in Arnstadt. In October 1705, he took a four-week leave of absence to study the music of Buxtehude in Lübeck, a renowned composer of works for organ and vocal pieces. These may have been the main influence on Bach's early vocal works, Actus Tragicus BWV 106. He only returned to Arnstadt in January 1706. During this period in Arnstadt he also composed the Capriccio Sopra La Lontananza Del Suo Fratello Diletissimo BWV 992, the choral prelude Wie Shön leuchtet der Morgenstern BWV 739.
