These days, James Cameron is perhaps most known as a pioneer within the art of digital filmmaking. Beyond a new release, his films serve as technological demonstrations for the foreseeable future of the medium. None of which is to say his latest movies are bad; they just carry an additional facet that a lot of releases are unburdened with. Yet this wasn’t always the case. There was a brief…

A pic of Hicks and Hudson from the upcoming ALIENS Artbook. I would love to know if there will be more pics of Hicks in this book before I buy it, its a BIG deciding factor!
The gunfights, the lone sheriff against the hordes of outlaws, the isolation, the horseback chases, unapologetic manliness are what make the Western a favorite genre of many and a prime venue for delivering great stories. Anyone who likes stories of the Wild West has probably already seen Tombstone but if you haven't let me tell you why you should.
Based on true events - including the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the exploits of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday - the film is set in the 1880s. Lawmen Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell), Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer), Virgil Earp (Sam Elliott), and Morgan Earp (Bill Paxton) are retiring to the small mining town of Tombstone. Reluctantly, the four friends are convinced to don the sheriff and deputy badges once again against the Cowboys, a large group of outlaws led by “Curly Bill” Brocious (Powers Boothe).
This movie contains everything you'd expect from a western without making it feel clichéd. You’ve got the gun-slinging, the shootouts, the ruthless outlaws, the hard-hitting lawmen, the gambling, drinking, and the horseback riding. It plays like a “best of”. We’ve got a lot of big names in this movie both in terms of the cast and the plot, as it re-enacts some of the best-known events of the period. Michael Biehn, Charlton Heston, Stephen Lang, Billy Zane, Billy Bob Thornton, and more. They all deliver good performances, with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer being standouts. They convincingly play good friends pulled back into a world they hoped to have left behind. Even if the narration and story didn’t tell you that they had years’ worth of stories together, you'd know it instantly.
It's a memorable, iconic film and would've been even better if it had cut back on the content a little. It’s hard to say exactly what could've been trimmed (doubly so, considering we're reviewing the director's cut). Everyone gets ample character development, which means you know them all intimately but it can also drag a bit. A few less quiet scenes between the showdowns and shootouts. But don't cut anything even a single second of Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. It's one of his best performances.
Tombstone has iconic scenes that will stick with you for a long time because they bring something new. This makes me doubly sad that I didn't leave the picture full of enthusiasm for it. My expectations were off - I assumed this was an action film - and probably should've started off with the theatrical cut rather than the lengthier version. I was let down but this just makes me want to watch it again rather than turn anyone away from it. This is a great-looking film that fans of the Wild West will embrace wholeheartedly. It's likely to become a new favorite for you. (Director’s Cut on DVD, June 19, 2015)
