If I had a nickel for every time Robert De Niro starred in a 70s movie where he played a depressed, mentally unstable Vietnam war veteran struggling with Post-traumatic stress disorder and reintegration into society, that constantly wears his army apparel even after returning, who at one point had romantic interest in a woman but isn't able to have a relationship with her due to his mental state upon his return, and who almost to kill himself via gunshot to the head but fails, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

C'è un personaggio cinematografico in cui ti riconosci?
Domanda molto bella e difficile.

And so the grand total for 2023 is....
267!
Of course, there's a couple of DNFs in there which inflate this number somewhat, but I am absolutely not going to pick through and count them out. Plus, a DNF only gets included on the list if I've gotten through a significant portion of the book. If it's a page one no-no, it's not even worth mentioning.
I made the decision at the start of this year, to try out more books I'd never heard of before. I really like trawling through the library app, or through audible's free archives and finding stuff that I'd probably never normally have discovered. Also, revisiting books that I read a long time ago and seeing if they resemble my memories of them.
Overall, I think this was a very satisfying year of reading, and I hope that I enjoy 2024's reads just as much!
nf= non fiction ss= short story
Stars awarded at my whim.

I realized very early on that I've always been attracted to in media and fiction, unconventional protagonists that while are heroic, they're NOT at all the typical type of "heroes" you'd expect. I've always found that way more interesting and compelling than most other regular or conventional type of stories. Here's a list of the ones that I think are some (or in this case, a LOT) of my biggest influences when it comes to the characters that I write, the protagonists that I write where it's unconventional main characters fighting the odds or facing the highest stakes possible or BOTH in incredible situations or scenarios BUT are again NOT the generic "heroes" you'd think or expect them to be:

“Robert De Niro's copy of the United States Army Infantry School Ranger Handbook (Fort Benning, Georgia, 1972) Original photocopy of Douglas R. Bey, M.D., "The Returning Veteran Syndrome," in Medical Insight, July 1972 Robert De Niro notes for The Deer Hunter in a spiral notebook, ca. 1977 Dog tags for the character Michael Vronsky, worn by Robert De Niro in The Deer Hunter, ca. 1977 1977 Robert De Niro Costumes and Personal Effects Robert De Niro's annotated copy of the third draft of Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter script, 1977 Robert De Niro Papers 45.6, 44.6, 183, 44.4, CP1031 De Niro's proclivity for background research and advance preparation are evident in his portrayal as Michael Vronsky in Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter (1978). He traveled to Ohio to talk with mill workers in Steubenville and Mingo Junction and to study the idiosyncrasies of their speech. He read about hunting techniques and regulations and met with Vietnam veterans, particularly former prisoners of war. Some of these veterans provided memoirs, medical and psychiatric records, and other information. The production crew watched hours of news footage of the war. De Niro also continued his practice of analyzing the screenplay and making copious notes. The spiral- bound notebook here includes not only notes made during preparations for The Deer Hunter but also notes on Raging Bull (1980), which De Niro hoped would be his next project.”
