dragonchild - s/t LP - Debo Band’s DA Mekonnen in saxophone explorations and meditations
In 2016, Boston-based Ethiopian group Debo Band released Ere Gobez, their second and, for now, final LP. The band played a handful of festival dates over the next few years, gradually trailing off into silence. DA Mekonnen, founding member and bandleader, has spent the years since then slowing down. He questioned nearly every foundational element in his life. He got sober, dove deep into film photography, ecology, and astrology, and focused on feeling the deep and difficult feelings contemporary reality gives us so many ways to escape. He also built a solitary music practice from scratch, which he refers to as an “ancestral practice” - a connection to a spirit of independence he traces back through his family. The idea of an ancestral practice is also a nod to his grandmothers, who were each spirit workers involved in zār, a kind of ritual to purge spirit possession with roots in Ethiopia. Mekonnen’s goal in the reset was to “make things with the kind of love you can’t ever take back,” to quote from Jarod K. Anderson, a poet and writer who goes by The Cryptonaturalist and whose work is one of many inspirations behind Mekonnen’s new project, dragonchild.
dragonchild takes the exploration of Ethiopian music Mekonnen began with Debo Band and explodes it into vivid, three-dimensional space. Where Debo called back to the sounds of 1970s Addis and added original material along those same lines, dragonchild shatters traditions and boundaries, incorporating sampled material, field recordings, experiments in high and low fidelity, and the throughline that unites the diverse sounds, layers of Mekonnen’s rich and ecstatic saxophone. “I’ve been thinking a lot about ego death and being willing to let certain things go,” he says. “Things that made you feel good about yourself, made you feel really successful. I think artistically those things can be really dangerous. They can be dangerous crutches.” In moving beyond what brought him success in a fickle industry, he is braving new territory to bring us something more, something vulnerable and alive. The name of the project derives from Haile Gerima’s 2008 film Teza, the story of an Ethiopian lab researcher who returns to his small village after long sojourns in both Germany and Addis Ababa. Near the end of the film, there is the hopeful but enigmatic line “do not despair - we are children of the dragon,” which evokes the resilience of the people and of the earth. It’s a nod to Erta Ale, the active lava lake in Ethiopia photographed by Michael Tsegaye for his Afar series, included as part of the album artwork and recognized instinctively by Mekonnen as “portraits of the dragon.”

"Recent Histories" unites the perspectives of fourteen artists of African decent, who investigate social identity, questions of belonging, and an array of sociopolitical concerns. Providing a point of entry to engage critically with current practices and the frameworks of contemporary African photography and video art, "Recent Histories" features an introduction by the curators, seven essays by renowned critics and scholars, as well as statements from and conversations with each individual artist.

1 SEMAINE/1 ŒUVRE – Série "Chasms of the soul" de Michael Tsegaye

[TASK 131: ETHIOPIA]
In celebration of Black History Month, here’s a masterlist below compiled of over 320+ Ethiopian faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK - examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.

A few photos from 'The Journey: New Positions in African Photography,' one of Siddhartha Mitter’s Favorite Art Books of 2021 @nytimes !! @siddharthamitter writes: "This volume showcases 17 photographers from nine countries, graduates of a 2008-18 mentorship program founded by Simon Njami, a respected curator (and co-editor of this book, with Sean O’Toole). A few have become recognized — Sammy Baloji, @lebohang_kganye — while others, like @gosettelubondo are emerging just now into the continent’s photo vanguard, with a full spectrum of documentary and conceptual approaches. Here, 13 essays by critics approach the subject by theme — “Knowledge,” “Fiction,” “Desire”— and broaden their discussion to other emerging photographers as well as the archive. It’s a generous approach that proposes African photography as a fertile and expansive field of collective inquiry." Photographers include: Sammy Baloji, Eric Gyamfi, Macline Hien, Lebohang Kganye, Ala Kheir, Gosette Lubondo, Mário Macilau, Sabelo Mlangeni, Moss Morwahla Moeng, Mimi Cherono Ng’ok, Musa N. Nxumalo, Adeola Olagunju, Monique Pelser, Thabiso Sekgala, Georges Senga, Michael Tsegaye and Jansen van Staden. Congrats @kerberverlag !! Huis Marseille, Recent Histories / Contemporary African Photography and Video Art from The Walther Collection

In Ethiopia, we were incorporated in a team of Ethiopians and expatriates working for the establishment of a natural park. Coming as foreigners to a new part of the world, not as a tourist but in order to carry out a study, can be very difficult. We were lucky in this case as there were a group of people already working on the project, and we were from the very beginning on good terms with them. These are the members of the Park Committee, who we had the pleasure of working with during our stay in Addis. You have all been helpful and have made us feel full members of the Committee. ('Ato' and 'Wro.' are the Amharic equivalences to 'Mr.' and 'Mrs.')
Mr. Michael Sargent, initiative taker to the park and the founder of the Ethiopia Heritage Trust. He is very enthusiastic with many ideas and visions. He also had the power to put them into reality. As Mr. Sargent is Head of British Council, he offered the Park Committee an office at the British Council Building, situated in the Piazza area. We could also use the British Council car for some trips up on Entoto.
Ato Tadesse Terfa, chairman of the Park Committee. His present employment is as an Art Director at British Council. We shared his room at British Council and met him at Park Committee meetings.
Wro Beletu Mengistu, park coordinator and formerly an official at the Ministry of Education. As the Park Coordinator, she had many duties on her table and was the first to be full time employed for establishing the Entoto Natural Park. She had big interest in ecological and environmental education questions and is invaluable with her diplomatic experience. We paid visits to many parks of Addis Ababa with her and Ato Napoleon and met her almost daily at the British Council office.
Mrs. Sue Edwards, member of Flora Project, National Herbarium. She has a profound knowledge of Ethiopian species. We worked closely together and made a couple of field trips, one of them to a park outside Addis. We also spent many afternoons with her in the National Herbarium office. Special thanks for offering us better living and nursing us when we become ill.
Through Mrs. Edwards we met other botanists, who become members of the Park Committee during our time in Ethiopia. Among them, Ato Damtew Teferra, and _Ato Mirutz Ghiday_ took an active part in the discussion and were turning the Committee towards a more Ethiopian view.
Ato Yoseph Bereded, architect. He has participated in the work on the latest Master Plan of Addis Ababa and is now working at a private architectural office, to which we were invited. He has a personal interest in landscape architecture and made a park walk together with us and _Ato Napoleon_ one Sunday.
Ato Napoleon Tsegaye, Who become the second employee for the Park Committee. He is native to the park area and guides weekly trips up on Entoto. Ato Napoleon has the best onsite knowledge of all people we met and also has a very good contact with the locals. We never went up on Entoto without him and he becomes our closest counterpart. It was very satisfying to see the Park Committee had realized the absolute necessity to base the development of the park on local knowledge like his. We could neither have concluded our inventory of the park in the field nor get the most out of the aerial photographs for the making of maps without his contribution.
Dr. Agadu , senior police officer. He is, among others, involved in the questions regarding the future guarding of the Park, such as the employment of a chief guard.
Dr. Hailu , dean of Faculty of Technology. Dr. Hailu was going to organize a physical survey of the Park. He will guarantee some students being involved with the development of the park at an early stage.
Mrs. Rita Pankhurst, botanist. She lived in Ethiopia for many years and has a big horticultural interest (and a beautiful garden) and an economic mind. She is the wife of Dr.Richard Pankhurst, Professor of History.
Ato Yilma Delegn has become involved as a member of Ethiopian Wildlife Association. He initiated debates about buffer zones around the Park and has got experience from establishing protected nature areas in various parts of Ethiopia. He strongly argued for not repeating the mistake from other nature conservation strategies of not involving the local people in and around the park at an early stage.
The Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Building college, at Addis Ababa Universty, with Ato Wubshet Berhanu, head of the Department, offered us lodging and help in matters concerning our work and stay in Ethiopia. Ato Fasil Georgis and Ato Zeleke Belay, both of them teachers, were our counterpart in continuing discussions. We also very much appreciated the kind of treatment the staff and student gave us.
We would also like to thank The International Rural Development Centre, IRDC, at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU, for giving us the MSF grant and the exciting possibility to travel to Ethiopia.
The Office of Regional Planning, the municipality of Eskilstuna, Sweden has been very generous in offering possibilities of using their office in preparing this report.
Our supervisor in Sweden, Roland Gustavsson, Professor in Plant Design and Landscape Management at the Department of landscape planning, Alnarp. SLU, Has given his valuable opinions and wise suggestions, helping us to conclude this report.
Last but not least, we want to thank Dr. Dag Rudin, an expert in Forestry Genetics and member of the Tree Seed Project at United Nations, Addis Ababa. Mr. Rudin, as our supervisor in Ethiopia, was very encouraging, and one who initially proposed to the Park Committee to offer MFS for two Swedish landscape architects. We made two trips out of Addis with him when he was teaching in tree seed management. One trip was to Wondo Genet and one to Menagesha State Forest. Both field trips were essential for our study. He also invited us to his home when we were in need of comfort.
